morning, august 20th, san francisco police are investigating a fatal muni bus accident in the castro district. and a hit-and-run suspect accused of killing a four-year-old boy is due in court monday. >> a beautiful sunrise. notice the clouds. the complete accuweather forecast in a few minutes. >> good morning, i'm terry mcsweeney. san francisco police are investigating a muni bus accident that killed a woman yesterday afternoon. the woman was crossing the street in the castro district and was almost across when she was hit. this year has been unusually dangerous for san francisco pedestrians. >> this muni shuttle bus was traveling at a slow speed as it took a left turn from 18th street to hartford according to police.

a woman was crossing at the same time. >> she was in the crosswalk. at this point we believe she was approximately 95% of the way across the street when the bus, left side of the bus, contacted her. >> ryan brody was across the street when the accident occurred. >> we saw a victim being pulled out of the bus and then they were wrapping her. obviously it seemed like she had passed away. >> the woman, believed to be in her late 20s or 30s, died at the scene. investigators sorted through the scene for hours. witnesses say the muni driver was visibly shaken as they saw him exit the bus. police placed him in a patrol car. >> the driver remained on scene. he's cooperating with investigators and as far as policy he will be tested for any signs of impairment. >> police say he didn't immediately exhibit any signs that he was impaired. this is the ninth pedestrian fatality in san francisco so far this year. elizabeth of walk san francisco says that's nine too many. >> every year over 800 people are hit by cars in san francisco.

we really need to have safer streets when this many people get hit by cars, that's not okay. >> ironically police say the bus would have not normally been taking this turn on hartford. >> it was taken out of service to supplement the f-line trolleys. they had a higher than usual passenger riding so they took that bus out of service to supplement those lines and the driver was on his way to the bus stop at 17th and castro to begin that route. >> there have been nine pedestrian fatalities so far this year. october of last year there were only six. according to the advocacy group transportation area, san francisco ranks first in pedestrian fatalities in san francisco. abc7 news. >> the head of muni, edward reiskin, released a statement saying we express our deepest sympathy to the family and

friends of the pedestrian killed in the tragic bus accident this afternoon involving a muni puts. the man who hit a santa rosa boy was cite the twice driving without a license days before the accident. police say 22-year-old marcus garcia had a conditional license that expired on july 27th. officers say the victim was in the crosswalk at west 9th street and rockwell place when a car hit him about 6:00 thursday evening. the boy died yesterday morning at children's hospital in oakland. his name has not been released. a person listening to a police scanner heard a description of the car and spotted it not far from the incident. the witness says he also saw the suspect peeling a decal after the car's rear window. garcia is scheduled to appear in court monday. >> a stanford student has disappeared in malaysia after going on tour with the university chamber chorale. the 22-year-old went to japan with the group and when everyone else returned home he went during across asia. he taught english in thailand. he contacted his family daily until several days ago.

his parents last heard from him on sunday. his professor said he and had been exchanging e-mails and he hasn't heard from jacob in more than a week. >> for a guy who is very good at returning e-mail and communicating in general, electronically while he's traveling, it is a concern that we haven't heard from him for this long. >> he did not have a specific itinerary, but had been updating a public google map. he holds dual citizenship and was traveling on u.s. and german passports. he was last seen in malaysia. family and friends of a missing hayward nursing student are going to be conducting another search today. it will be the seventh search party looking for michelle li since she was last seen three months ago. she disappeared on may 27th when she left the hospital saying she was going to her car. police found the car and has classified the case as a murder investigation, but her family is not giving up hope. there's a reward for information in that case.

technology is making our lives easier in many ways, but it comes with some risk. a discovery that some medical devices could be hacked, and bay area congresswoman is calling for tougher standards or wireless devices. as john alston reports, insulin pumps are getting attention but there are other risk. >> the concern comes from a computer expert who also happens to be a diabetic. at a conference this month he showed how he could remotely reprogram his pump. and hacking has also occurred against pacemakers and defibrillators that use wireless communication. two people who know that well is the san francisco security consultant. don and matt, while they don't deal with the issue of medical devices, they are working to stay one step ahead of hackers. >> a lot of things that are actually improving and making our lives easier, but at the same time with these devices, they have become, you know, the

issues of what actually they have control over. >> one device they investigated was the car security system. they recently demonstrated how they could by pass a car alarm with a few key strokes on a laptop and they were able to open the locked door and start the engine. [engine noise] >> anti-theft systems rely on cellular networks which allow one machine to talk to another, often through a text message. >> so anything that uses the system is going to be vulnerable to a range of potential attacks. you will see that in almost every industry today worldwide. >> wireless signals are behind home security systems. atms, power grids and pipelines. the security consultants say that unnamed car alarm company they were able to breach quickly fixed the problem. consumers should ask questions before buying. >> a good sign is, you know, a manufacture publicly stating we have had our security reviewed by third parties.

>> everything is connected, you know, with internet, wi-fi, whatever it may be, all these different systems. they are supposed to be secure, but they really aren't. >> with regard to the medical devices, industry officials are downplaying the threat saying that the average person would not be able to figure out a way to hack an insulin pump or pacemaker. still the fcc is being asked to investigate. in the newsroom, john alston, abc7 news. >> coming up next, a woman who lost her home in the san prune no explosion gets a big pay off after help from abc7. also a sea lion is getting medical attention as investigators look for a gunman.

weeks away. one fire victim waited all this time to hear from pg&e about the money owed her for the damage to her home and the payment happened only abc7 news contacted the utility yesterday. abc7's wayne freedman has the story. >> my blood pressure is up, i've been on meds, i go to counseling twice a week. i don't sleep. >> such as the stress with dealing with pg&e after surviving the san bruno explosion. >> i am lucky to be alive, but once you get over that and you thank god, you know that your life is not what it should be, especially at my age. >> this is what remains of the house she used to live in on claremont drive. gilda and her boyfriend, tim, have no desire to rebuild or to return, but they have not been able to buy a new home in the

area because while insurance covered $700,000. pg&e has paid nothing, including money that should have gone to the cost of the lot in san bruno, plus more for the home's destroyed contents. >> it's like trying to deal with a david, trying to deal with a goliath. >> they owe me over $400,000 that they have committed to in their purchase program. >> they do not want to talk to our lawyers. they want to delay things. they don't want to pay moneys that more or less we had signed up for. >> the level of frustration by some san bruno residents is so high that 50 of them have filed a class action suit against pg&e. neither pg&e, nor their lawyers, would comment on the status of that case, but when abc7 called the utility and asked specifically about gilda, pg&e reacted quickly and surprisingly by mid-afternoon. >> she shouldn't have had to gone to you to get this taken care of.

dissipated there. it was the third haboob of the monsoon season. that's what they call it. they say the area is experiencing an abnormal number of dust storms but what sets this year apart is the size and power of those storms. weather experts say such massive dust storms occur in only a few laces, one obviously arizona and the sahara desert and parts of the middle east because of dry conditions and large amounts of sand. you can't have an haboob without a lot of sand. >> and they also get it for the burning man festival near reno. another week to go. a lot of people getting ready to head that direction. >> i bet a lot of people think that's a bad combination to have a festival and having an haboob moving in. but at the burning man they might appreciate it. it will add to the art. >> it does. let's talk about our weather,

shall we? >> let's do that. >> cooler and we have some moisture. cooler if you like the fog. every day is beautiful here in the way area. that's for sure. good morning to you. saturday morning, 6:18 right now. a nice shot out there. you see the clouds kind of hang on. that will be the story throughout the day today. golden gate, check it out. a little drizzle to go along with the clouds and fog. as we head out to a beautiful shot of mount damage. high definition sunrise underway. we do have the marine layer. you can see the clouds. i read about the 2200, 2500 feet. so your temperatures look like this. we have temperatures in the 50s right now from fremont down toward livermore, all throughout the area. half moon bay, 57 degrees. that's where we are going to be at all day long with the clouds and cool conditions. a little bit drizzle along the coast. temperatures about ten degrees below average for today. warmer weather, though, on tap for next week. here's what is happening.

area of low pressure spinning off the coast, bringing in the onshore flow. that's been with us the past week or so and it will be for another couple days. that will mean cooler conditions all across our area. fog along the coast throughout the day today. cloudy condition most areas. it will start to clear out as you head further inland. but temperatures only in the 07s out here. normally we are in the 80s and 90s. again, a good ten degrees cooler where we should be. i want to show you this. a tropical storm greg here. it is dissipate bug we may catch some of the moisture by the middle part of the week. so maybe some thunderstorms in our forecast by, say, wednesday. we will keep a close eye on it for you. in the meantime highs in the 60s and 70s with cloudy and cool conditions most areas. half moon bay, good morning. 58 degrees. and we will see lower 60s across the downtown area. only in the 50s though as you head out to ocean beach. upper 80s. the hotspot there. 70s further to the south in

[ male announcer ] chex cereal. five flavors. gluten free. >> new unemployment numbers are not good news for california's short term economic future. california did add 4500 jobs in july, but the state's unemployment rate rose to 12% up from 11.8 percent in june. good news here, we had some counties with the lowest unemployment with the rest of the counties around 11%. that includes contra costa counties where the work offices are packed with job hunters including professional and mid-level managers. jobs in retail sales showed a growth spurt the last two

months, but that could be seasonal and that creation could shrink with summer ending. >> president obama is pushing congress to create more jobs. at his weekend's internet and radio address recorded at a farm in illinois. the president asked congress to pass a road construction bill to put people to work and to extend a reduction in the payroll task. >> these are common sense ideas. ideas supported by both democrats and republicans. the only thing holding them back is politics. only thing preventing them from passing the bills is to put country ahead of party. that's what we have right now. that's what holding the country back. >> the obamas are vacationing in massachusetts. the president is expected to outline his jobs proposal when congress returns to washington in september. santa clara county is getting state funding for two big highway projects. the valley transportation authority has received $156 million. about half is used to add approximately 8 miles of carpool

lanes to interstate 880 from highway 237 in milpitas to highway 101 in san jose. the rest of the money will be used to build auxiliary and carpool lanes between highway 85 and mountain view and a road in palo alto. caltrain expects the project to start next year and finish in 2014. most california 11th graders will be caught the benefits of using plastic over paper. they will put a positive spin on plastic supermarket bags in the environmental curriculum. that's a conclusion by our investigative media partner, california watch, part of the center for investigating reporting. here's our education reporter with more. >> san francisco was the first to outlaw plastic grocery bags four years ago. san jose in sunyvale followed. this year mirin county did the same.

all looking for something more environmentally friendly. while cities and counties wereñi talking about a ban and the american chemistry council, a lobbying group for the plastics industry, was hard at work proposing changes to a section of the 11th grade environmental textbook. for example, a section in that textbook focused on problems with plastic bags. the chemistry council quickly recommended another section on the benefits of plastic shopping bags. suzanne rust is a reporter with california watch, which began the investigation. several environmental groups told her why they have a problem with the american chemistry council's input. >> what has happened here is that the government has opened up our children's curriculum, our children's education to private interests. >> here's how it started. in 2004 the california environmental protection agency was preparing a new curriculum and looking for input from the public. that's when the american chemistry council stepped in.

the cal epa assigned a consultant, gerald leiberman, and his staff to oversee the comments. leiberman has helped the state department of education to enhance environmental education in schools. the california epa talked on leiberman's behalf. >> ultimately all of those comments and the revision that stem from them were ultimately reviewed by the curriculum commission, by the staff at the california department of education, and by the state board of educations. >> and apparently no one opposed it. here's an example of what was added to the textbook at the recommendation of the chemistry council. "plastic grocery bags require 70% less energy to manufacture than paper bags." >> absolutely false. >> mark murray is with californians against waste, an environmental lobbying group. >> the production of plastic bags consumes more resources, more energy both to produce them and transport them to the grocery stores than the equivalent amount of paper bags.

>> he and other environmental activists insist plastic bags are bad for wildlife, leach toxic chemicals and take years to decompose. here's another example of what was put in the textbook. "plastic bags can be reused, for example, to line household waste baskets." the american chemistry council issued this statement today, "the purpose of our comments was to correct factual inaccuracies and to present a more complete view of plastic bags' environmental attributes." according to rust the students must be given a test on the benefits of plastic shopping bags. >> if you were told, list the advantages of plastic shopping bags and if you don't get those right you get five points off, that teaches a child that is a correct answer and this is a valid point of view.

>> paisley is the state senator introduced the 2003 legislation requiring that environmental principles be taught in california schools. she will now ask that changes be made to the textbook. >> a change, it would be a minor tweak, and i'm asking the environmental protection agency and the state board of education to please consider that. >> and the full list of california school districts using this curriculum can be viewed at californiawatch.org. in the newsroom, abc7 news. >> break news for you right now. we are just learning this morning that eastern's state tv is reporting that two former uc berkeley students who have been detained in iron, each have been sentenced to 8 years in jail. shane bauer and josh fattal have been in prison in iron for two years now since they were hiking on the boarder and arrested for allegedly spying. the woman arrested with the pair was released for medical and humanitarian reasons. it's unclear if bauer and fattal will have to serve the entire sentence or if they will get some kind of a pardon. we will keep you posted if we

assist one another with needs that arise to force them to deviate from their standard budget. >> the website accepts donations as small as $5.00 and keeps 18% of the contribution to cover operating costs. charity watch dogs recommend nonprofit groups keep no more than 20%. the rest should go to people like banks from palo alto. she will start college at american university in washington d.c. in august. she got more than $1,000 for tuition. mostly from anonymous donors. >> i think it help. it was a big ego booster for us, knowing that we could find help when they needed it. >> all potential recipients are prescreened locally before they are posted on the site. to make sure the money gets where it is supposed to, givelocally collects the money and pays the expenses on behalf of the recipient. >> because we don't oversaturate the site with recipients. very rarely do we have recipients whose needs don't get met. almost never. >> it means a lot. it shows there are good people out there with good hearts willing to give and help.

yesterday by the state fire marshal fall short of endorsing new smoke alarms that many believe could save lives in california. here's 7 on your side's michael finney with an update on the new generation of smoke alarms. >> the >> the photoelectric and dual sensor ion alarm will go off sooner. now we have the photo ion alarm starting right now. >> a demonstration conducted by the palo alto fire department for 7 on your side shows how photoelectric alarms can save valuable minutes. in this experiment the alarm alerts homeowners of a slow, smoldering fire more than two minutes before the other. >> now the ionization. the more common ionization alarms used in most homes took more than ten minutes.

the state fire marshal wasn't available for comment, but a spokesperson told us the state fire marshal does not endorse one technology over another. gordon of the palo alto fire department sits on the task force for smoke alarms and he supports the use of photoelectric alarms over ionization. he believes if the recommendations are adopted, ionization alarms would eventually be phased out. >> right now the primary reason the ionization alarms are selected, they are less expensive. one of the things that will happen is the price difference will go away. >> the recommendations include recommending that ionization alarms are to be placed no less than 20 feet away from cooking appliances. that's because ionization alarms are prone to false alarms, leading people to pull out the batteries. the recommendations call for clear instructions on packaging about where the alarms should be placed. he thinks those requirements

would bring consumers to photoelectric alarms, thus driving down the price as the demand increases. >> the fact we've made very significant recommendations to me represents a solid step forward for fire safety in california. >> the state fire marshal is also recommending smoke alarms be replaced every ten years and that ten-year batteries be used. we attempted to reach an industry trade group for comment, the electrical manufacturers association did not return our call. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. >> coming up next, the mourners. the story behind the french sculptures that express the feelings of death. meganumber is 52. yes, somebody out there has all the numbers but the ticket was not purchased in california. >> some rare art treasures from france have lift their home and arrived in san francisco to be shown in the alegion of honor. we take a look at "the mourners," opening today. >> they are sharing grief, praying, reflecting, singing, expressing devotion. the mourners are mid-16th century sculptures from the tombs of the duke of burgundy in france. >> all of the figures that are represented here are replications of the different levels of society that would have participated in a funeral. >> they wear cloaks so that one level of society doesn't appear to be greater than another. 37 of them have brought their procession to the legion of honor. >> they are carved from alabaster, which has the appearance of marble, but it is softer. it allows for greater definition of detail. >> they are just 16 inches tall.

in real life the statues are on a collinade at the base of the tomb depicted here in this painting. they are from a museum undergoing renovation. almost everyone who visits the city has to see the statues because it is in the former home of the duke. the mourners home was preordained in medieval france. >> the monks are praying for the dukes until the end of time. that's why we need them. for the salvation of history. >> the funerals could be elaborate, sometimes lasting for months. and the exquisite detail of the mourners really captures the emotion of the time. at the tomb they are flush against the surface, but in this setting we can walk around them and perhaps appreciate the work even better up close. the mourners will be on display through the end of the year. in san francisco, abc7 news. >> jeff martinez is here to talk
