in the news this saturday morning, an investigation into a deadly explosion in a menlo park lab that kill aid scientist and injured a colleague. police are searching for a hit and run driver that injured a pedestrian last night in the south of market area. >> good morning, low clouds and fog is back this morning. numbers into mid 50s and we're starting a slight cooling trend today. >> good morning. today, cal osha will look into the cause of yesterday's fatal

explosion in a menlo park research lab. and the medical examiner says a 56-year-old scientist adrian martin died at the scene. a woman colleague was also injured. don sanchez reports the lab was sealed off until inspectors could get there. >> for meet me it was a very loud explosion. >> bob works for a company with offices above the lab where the explosion happened. >> i heard the building shake. i heard the explosion. >> jim hill was in his office when the explosion occurred down the hall. he joined two dozen others in getting out of the building. but scientists had been mixing it into one cylinder like this. something went deadly wrong, some people went to the aid of their fallen comrade autos five went into the laboratory. very risky to do that.

they didn't turn off cylinders. >> they told the man he was still alive but he died in front of the building. a woman scientist was blown out of the door bit force. >> she was transported as i understand it outside for ear drum related issues, likely overpressure from she did have medical issues but according to her fellow co-workers complaint was minimal. >> the explosion damaged the lab. they have to determine if it's safe and there has been water damage. the company does research on a filtration process for chemicals and natural gas but the fire chief says there was never a hazard from the explosion. >> nature of what they do here in the skpth seize of the z.amount of products they're able to use, there isn't a risk in the local community. >> but what caused it? what roll does that leaking cylinder play? that is what investigators will determine. >> i know ins and outs but i

can't think of what could have gone wrong. >> cal osha is going to take the lead on the investigation, they're red tagging the building meaning nobody can get back inside until monday at the earliest. in menlo park, don sanchez abc 7 news. >> san francisco police are looking for a hit and run driver who injured a pedestrian last night in south of market area. police say he was struck by a car about 10:30. the driver raced away. the car likely has front end damage and the victim was rushed to the hospital with serious injury autos two families whose lives are changed forever by street violence came together last night for support. the nafas brought their son and a few weeks later, another man fatally shot in front of his 6-year-old son. >> tears, screams and prayers

for jose and carlos. the 6-year-old placed a candle at the memorial. he watched as his father was gunned down. his mother says he's in shock. >> he acts like he doesn't understand what happened. he's in denial but everything is recorded inside of him. carlos nafa's father arrived at the mem skbril declined an interview. a crowd of family and friends came to the market at the corner of 103rd avenue and international boulevard this, is where the 39-year-old was shot to death during an attempted robbery just after cashing his check in the market. he says he's been seeing funerals for children once baptizedded. >> i have a map of the little boy, nafa. and last week a funeral of jeesus, young man.

21. >> now air, memorial for esparasa. and this woman says the family is reeling. it's very sad. especially watching my godson. he's seeing a psychologist but the youngest doesn't know what he's lost. oakland police arrested two suspects in the nafa drive by shooting which they say was gang related. so far, the gunman who killed esparza are still at large, organizers say they plan to have a vigil on the anniversary of the deaths, just so the community doesn't forget. in oakland, abc 7 news. >> and a san jose police officer charged with molesting two teen-aged boys made a court appearance yesterday. the 44-year-old pleaded not guilty to charge that's could land him in jail for three years. prosecutors say he answered an online ad on craig's list from a teenager who then introduced him to his other friends. prosecutors believe there are two more victims.

>> this is an ongoing investigation. and it's going to take time to go through computers and flash drives and cell phones. >> police say parties occurred at his home in gilroy. and his attorney says his client cannot wait for his day in court. that could come as soon as next month. is he on paid administrative leave from the police department. >> and accused serial killer has given up rights to represent himself. the 77-year-old man will get a public degraernsd help and think charges in the murders of four victim in 1977 to 94. rep -- he represented himself until yesterday when the judge ruled a defense attorney is required by law. the judge pushed back next tuesday's evidence hearings until october to give the public defender time to prepare. and he can afford it and will have to pay costs of his defense. >> and an injured duck is recovering this morning in a south bay. this was no ordinary injury.

it had been shot with a blow dart. someone shot several ducks with a blow gun in santa clara. this young duck hit under the eye. the dart removed yesterday at the wildlife center and the bird will be released back into the wild. >> green day front man billy joe armstrong says he was kicked off a southwest airlines flight for wearing saggy pants saying quote just got kicked off a southwest flight because my pants sagged too low no. joke. he was trying to fly from oakland to burbank. 7 live associate producer happened to be on the flight. >> a flight flight attendant approaches him and said "pull your pants up". he said "don't have you better things to do than worry about that". then, the flight attendant said again, "pull your pants up or you're coming off the plane".

major changes could be coming to schools in oakland. abc 7 has the story. >> oakland has 101 schools serving more than 38,000 students, compare that with other districts. mount diablo unified, 55 schools, 34,000 students. and san jose unified, 52 schools for 32,000 students. oakland superintendent says quality is lost when you have that many schools. >> when resources are spread thin it doesn't allow you to have proper investment in human capital, in infrastructure to make sure there is a quality program in

every neighborhood. >> districts must aloe indicate 55% of the funds to teacher salaries and instructional aids. but oakland never hits that target because the district spends part of the money on keeping all of the schools open. so the school board will now decide how many schools it must close. it's always been a controversial issue among parents and communities. >> just pray to them the government has money for the war but don't have money for the students. >> for years, oakland led the small school movement. but with declining enrollment that now means 19 schools have fewer than 200 students. the oakland teachers union agrees some schools will have to close. >> we'd like to see equity. that you don't end up with a situation we had 10-15 years ago where schools have small schools and resources and flatland schools don't. >> no school has been officially targeted. but the district says it will

probably come up with a list of 15 for next year. 30 over the next three years. >> we have to have an idea where students goring and have to get them in other programs that are going to be suitable. and you're going to have to find more support for schools. >> i'm going to stand up and fight. to do whatever it takes to get them a better education. >> according to the district closing the school means koit save between 200 and $400,000. no decision is expected until october. in the newsroom, abc 7 news. >> and a fast-moving wildfire in southern california forced evacuation of hundreds of homes. the fire has grown to more than 1100 acres and threatening million dollar ranch houses. two mobile homes have been destroyed and 700 homes are still under evacuation orders. the fire now 30% contained and started in the center divide of interstate 15 and cajon

president obama is using a labor day weekend address to call on congress to extend the transportation funding bill set to expire at the end of the month. >> if congress doesn't act, funding for roads and bridges will expire putting a stop to highway construction, bridge repair, mass transit systems and other important projects. >> the president says the 4,000 workers would be immediately furloughed and thousands of construction jobs around the nation would likely dry up. republicans support renewing the bill but object to the spending on stimulus initiatives which they say just did not work. president obama will address the joint sessions on thursday about a jobs plan and we'll air that speech here at 4:00 p.m. >> and school is back in session including a special training program in the east bay. and it's a job that has gone almost completely green.

monday. and this is the one we're concerned w it's tropical storm lee. strengthening from 55 miles per hour to 60. it's moving north and northwest slowly and there is going to take throughout the afternoon to make land fall. witness we're talking thunderstorms and possibility of thunderstorms. storm surge and flooding range of 10-15 inches and florida looking at big-time rain but importantly, it's new orleans we're worried about and this is not what they can take for the city. there are numbers here 50, oakland and 60 in antioch and there is clouds around oakland but san jose is sunny. and it will take a little bit

of time to push back low clouds and fog. it's dense along the coast. santa rosea, mild visibility in napa. there is delays of 44 minutes. the fog tells the story and there is an onshore flow getting a little bit stronger and deeper and there is a cool down with a rip current through san diego, los angeles into big sur coast and jant cruz and stintson beach. high pressure is very hot away from the bay and that is why we're going to take a look at temperatures in the southern sierra. south bay, how about 89 in campbell. there is 84 in mountain view.
