school supply giveaway to children affected by some of the gun violence. the hope is to reach out with the message of education and hope and steer them away from a life of violence, this even was organized by four women who lost loved ones to gun violence. one family member is nehemiah lewis. he was 25 when he was shot to death last summer, righty i'm standing now. they have assembled 200 backpacks with school supplies by there calculations there were 95 victims last year and 80 so far this year. these women say it's time to take a stand and reaching out to children is their first step. >> some can't afford to buy backpacks for their kids. i felt the need to give them out. show them we care. we-reach out to the little sisters anding brothers they have. don't fall your brother or stir

sister's footsteps. be led by something positive. >> reporter: following the giveaway, this groop group plans to hold a candlelight vigil in honor of those who died last year. a separate villagele well by held for one of the latest victims. jose esparza was numbered -- gunned don't last sunday that vigil is going to be starting within an hour or so of now and this vigil will be happening an hour later. so tonight at 11:00, we'll have details on both of these events for you. reporting live in oakland. abc-7 news. >> john: homicide number 80 took place yesterday in east oakland. terrance something i was shot to

death in the 2600 block of 27th avenue. a second victim was taken to the hospital and treated for nonlife-threatening gunshot wounds. there's no suspect. >> as the anniversary of 9/11 approaches national security officials issued an alert about possible al qaeda attacks using small airplanes. the fbi and homeland security warned terrorists have considered renting private planes and loading them with explosives. authorities have stepped up security nationwide and if aation businesses in the bay area have been notified. >> two fbi agents came in and told me about the possibility of not a specific threat but that al qaeda was planning to use generation perhaps to harm us here in america. >> john: threats involving small airplanes have come before after the 2001 attacks the government grounded thousands of crop dusters, fearing they could be use in terrorist attacks.

>> muslim americans in the bay area are using the anniversary of 9/11 to talk about the pain of the last decade and also to try to change misconceptions about their community. >> reporter: this campaign is part of a nationwide effort in the form of a blood drive. the goal is to honor 9/11 victims and stave -- save lives, called muslims for life. >> the decade since september 11th has been painful for men muslim americans, including nadia. >> muslims are not necessarily bad people, and we want to give back to the people who lost so much. >> reporter: a group of bay area muslims is doing just that, by taking time out to remember all the lives lost by saving lives through a blood drive. >> for us it's a matter of continuing to educate america slowly but surely to say, here's

the truth. >> at the muslim community silicon valley chapter it wasn't just muslims who filled every available donation slot. >> i feel like i do what i can to raise awareness that muslims are our brothers and sisters just like anyone, anyone in our community. >> reporter: a new pole by the pew research center found that muslims continue to feel targeted by america's war on terror. it just confirms what many say they already knew. >> had some people who have vandalized our property a few times. >> i've been pulled off a plane before. >> according to the study, a majority of muslims believe it is more difficult to be a muslim in the u.s. since 9/11 and found that 52% of muslim americans surveyed say muslims as a group are singled out for surveillance by government sponsored anti-terrorism policies. 43% say they permanently

survivors hung on to whatever they could in the water, waiting more than 12 hours before they were rescued. searchers found the body of leslie yi but stopped looking for several others. the families paid a private company to conduct an underwater sonar search. >> just through the survivors and understanding the lay of the land, we're coming up with some presumed what we consider hot spots, to search. >> john: the group, called find our fathers, received a check today from a recent chevy's restaurant fundraiser that will help finance the next search. >> a surfer in southern california has been declared dead as powerful waves are pounding the state. the 42-year-old was found in the water near his surfboard. the national weather service lifted the high surf advisory yesterday but rip currents remain an issue. the rough surf was cause evidence by the swell from a powerful storm in new zealand.

>> closed captioning brought to >> closed captioning brought to >> john: tropical storm lee dumped more than a foot of rain on some parts of the gulf coast. flood waters overwhelmed storm drapes and creeks and streams overflowed in louisiana. lee caused flooding in new orleans as well. authorities evacuated hundreds of people from homes. that's the far cry from the tens of thousands who tried to escape from hurricane katrina five years ago. >> so far by my place itself is not so bad bought the water is coming in from the back. from the highway. and i guess when -- going to have it soon. >> in alabama, lee triggered thunderstorms and tornadoes. forecasters believe parts of

tennessee and georgia could see up to eight inches of rain as lee continues to move in a northeasterly direction. in addition to the heavy rains, possible tornadoes spawned by lee have damaged at least five homes in the south in gulfport mississippi powerful winds knocked a mobile home off its foundation and flipped it over. no serious injuries reported there. >> president obama is promising the federal government will work to rebuild the towns recovering from hurricane irene. today the president visited a town in new jersey where more than 100 people had to be rescued from flood waters after irene had passed. the california supreme court is set to hear arguments on a key issue in the legal battle over same-sex marriage. the question before the panel is whether state law gives proposition 8 sponsors the right to appeal the ruling that found the ban on gay marriage unconstitutional. the initiative sponsors are seeking to appeal the ruling. after the hearing -- after hearing tuesday's arguments, the court will have 90 days to issue

>> john: it's going to be a jobless labor day for millions of americans and many have been out of work for years. there was more grim news on the employment front, setting the statement for probe -- president obama's big speech on thursday about how he wants to create needed jobs. >> president obama is spending the labor day weekend at camp david, working on his jobs speech. he left town with a parting shot. >> a lot of talk in washington about creating jobs but it doesn't help when those same folks turn around and risk losing hundreds of thousands of jobs because of political gamesmanship. >> on friday, the labor department revealed the economy added no jobs in august. the first time since 1945. that left unemployment lodged at 9.1%. the president will lay out his

jobs strategy before a joint session of congress thursday evening. >> the president will come forward with specific proposals that by any objective measure would add to growth and job creation in the short term. >> the plan is based on tax relief, including tax credits for companies that hire new workers, infrastructure investment, building projects for transportation, schools, and clean energy, and targeted assist since for -- assistance for those on unemployment for a long time. >> they want the natural labor relations board to stop pushing the union agenda and help companies create jobs. >> jobs that continue to elude millions. >> a lot of people going for the same job, and probably need about two people to fill in a job. >> it's been difficult.

continuing to monitor some rip current risks along mostly or mainly the south-facing beaches around the bay area, and malin county, that would include stinson beach, and in santa cruz county, twin lakes state beach, and sneaker waves that come up behind you and could possibly harm you as well. so, keep that in mind. most of the waves have started to die down there, from two to three feet. some of the larger waves are in southern california, but just a reminder, due to a lot of you will head to the coast tomorrow. here's a look at the highs from today. a delightful day for fairfield. 85. 87 in antioch. 84 in con card. novato, 80. 61 in san francisco. low clouds and fog. santa crurksz 71. and 85 in livermore. currently, 78 in concord. san francisco, napa, 73. 70 in mountain view as well as

san jose. here's a look at the weather highlights. clouds will return inland tonight. local drills. look for mid-day clearing inland tomorrow. keep the low clouds, patchy at best, near the coast, and warmer weather will return to the bay area as we get into tuesday and wednesday. you can see the bank of fog just sitting off the coast as westerly winds will move it further inland tonight, and you can see out towards the livermore valley area, expect dense overcast, maybe some mississippi -- mist and drizzle there as well. now, temperaturewise, few upper 40s in santa rosa and cloverdale, maybe clear sky for you guys. and overnight temperatures in the 50s, 60 expected flow antioch. here's the setup for tomorrow. another area of low pressure to the north of us that will consider the to the north, and

we look for temperatures to be mild, much like today, with plenty of sunshine, we'll keep the clouds at the coast. by tuesday, this low will push on towards the east. the high will modify back in, and d will move back in and temperatures warm up into the 90s in the east bay. highs for tomorrow, 80s, san jose, overcast at the coast. 75 for palo alto. san francisco, 66. in the north bay, we look for upper 70s to low 80s. 82 santa rosa. on the east bay, oakland tomorrow, 73 degrees. 77 for castro valley. interior east bay, temperatures upper 80s to low 90s, very comfortable. concord, 82. the heat will be with us as we head into tuesday, wednesday, thursday. back up to mid-up to e. 9-or-inland, 8-or-in the bay, and we cool things down next weekend. >> john: shu hires. the giants are shaken up.
