to the american woman who disappeared last month in aruba. what this man said and why he's still behind bars. and grande ideas. the ceo of starbucks taking washington to task for ignores the jobs crisis. >> this is no longer a crisis. it's an emergency. >> tonight, how she's using guerrilla tactics to get america's leaders to act like adults. >> announcer: from the global resources of abc news, withmora and bill weir in new york city, this is "nightline," september 7th, 2011. >> good evening, i'm cynthia mcfadden. and we begin tonight with a shooting spree in yet another american city. with the release of audio tapes of desperate 911 calls, a sifd picture of what happened inside a nevada ihop restaurant yesterday is now emerging. the picture outside the restaurant is coming into focus,

too. neighbors shocked at the holes the bullets left, shaking their heads, asking, why now and why here? abc's david wright is in carson city, nevada. >> 911. what's the address of your emergency. >> it's ihop. there's a shooting going on. >> shooting where? >> in the ihop. >> reporter: it's been a long time since carson city, nevada, was considered the wild west. >> ryan, move! he's shooting at us now. >> okay, all right. >> he's shooting at us. automatic weapons. >> automatic weapons, like long weapons? there's one guy with an automatic weapon. he's shooting everybody. >> reporter: but the scene at the local ihop tuesday morning abruptly changed that. that voice on n e 911 call was ralph, who owns the barbecue joint just across the parking lot. bullets riddled his weapons when the shooter started firing at random in a circle.

and you have one, two, three, four, five -- >> yeah. we've got so many more holes into the building. >> reporter: they pierced the antique cash register, punched homes in the walls and even punctured the ventilation duct in the kitchen. he showed us his security camera foot ablg of the scene. that's his son trying to lock the front door. >> and you'll see the bullet come through, right there. >> reporter: carson city is now the latest american community forced to make sense of the senseless. like tucson earlier this year, forced to absorb a madman's rampage that's now done lasting damage to dozens of people's lives. >> this is unquestionably the most devastating attack on our community in carson city's history. >> reporter: in this case, the shooter, identified at 32-year-old eduardo sencion, appeared to be targeted uniformed military personnel, holding a breakfast meeting at the back of the ihop.

yet his blue van had a yellow "support our troops" bumper sticker. >> in a few short hours, we lost the same number of soldiers we lost in the entirety operations iraqi and enduring freedom. >> reporter: sencion shot all five national guard members meeting at the restaurant, wounding two, killing three. major heath kelly, survived iraq. christian riege survived afghanistan, only to be shot dead over pancakes at the ihop. sergeant first class miranda mcel inny was also killed. a baker in her day job, she always brought cupcakes to welcome soldiers home from their tours of duty. the gunman also killed a senior citizen who was sitting in the line of fire. between the restaurant and the parking lot outside, sencion injured eight others before taking his own life with a gunshot to the head. his family members say they're as shocked as anyone he was

capable of such carnage. >> i would never think he would do something like that. i couldn't even picture anything like that. so it was a big surprise. >> reporter: family members insist he had no c cnection thaa they know of to anyone inside the ihop. no beef with the u.s. military, either. sencion had money problems. he filed for bankruptcy in 2009. family members also say he had a history of mental health issues. >> i just feel really bad. >> reporter: as with tucson, there will now be uncomfortable questions. how did someone with mental health issues gain access to not one but two assault rifles, as well as a handgun? how come nobody noticed he was planning this? the atf is now investigating. >> what i heard was explosions all of a sudden, several different sounds all the same time. >> reporter: for the people suddenly thrust into crisis, their second-guessing, too. >> as soon as i called 911, i

from the start when a robyn gardner disappeared on the caribbean island of aruba last month. authorities detained her traveling companion, a man she had met online. but only tonight are we learning about what he was up to before he was arrested, as investigators were just beginning the desperate search for gardner. here's abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: over a month after robyn gardner vanished from this idyllic island, prosecutors are still scratching at clues. but tonight, a trove of new evidence obtained exclusive ly y abc news unveiled why gary giordano remains the only suspect in this case, ordered detained today at this courthouse for another 60 days. prosecutors here are pinning their e eire case on these fbi documents and phone transcripts showing insurance representatives increasingly suspicious about giordano's behavior, just a day and a half

after gardner went missing. one representative told the fbi that giordano, quote, sounded excited, like he was about to win something. when inquiring about the $1.5 million insurance policy he'd purchased for gardner, making himself the beneficiary. the representative was so disturbed by the conversation, he went home and called police. in fact, the documents we obtained showed giordano made four separate calls to amex that day, august 4th. only july 31st, gardner traveled to this resort island with giordano. three days later, gardner disappeared as dusk fell on this isolated beach where giordano claims thehe had been snorkelin. but in the hours after police began to investigation, giordano went from boyfriend to suspect. was arrested august 5th. underpinning their case is this insurance policy. that is her signature on a travel insurance policy that names giordano as her

beneficiary. it was inked jusus a day before they arrived here. according to the transcripts, giordano seemed to shock another employee with his urgency and insistence that the policy be valid. in another call, giordano seemed more concerned about being reimbursed for his expenses during the search, saying, quote, "ah, i'm going to stay down here until the body is found." and adding, "i'veot to extend my rental car and i just don't want to start incurring all these costs to find out i did it wrong." and the last person to see them together at this restaurant says they were both drinking and robyn seems already drunk and that giordano acted suspiciously. there are three key things here wiwi regard to what gary giordano said that seems to be getting him into trouble. number one, this account about snorkeling, which many are questioning. number two, he items a ticket agent that his companion is taking a later flight. and number three, he's

repeatedly calling his insuranan company. so, those taken together look and sound terrible for giordano. >> reporter: a mountain of evidence, which investigators concede is purely circumstantial. prosecutors don't have a body or a murder weapon and still they don't have a real motive. so, what are they presenting in court? >> nothing. i haven't seen anything. >> reporter: tonight in his first interview, lopez told us the appeals panel spent fewer than ten minutes of jordan nope's appeal. >> maybe he's going to leave the island. >> reporter: some people might say that mr. giordanoalling the insurance company to try to collect or inquire about the policy would be callus or cavalier. >> he only called to inquire and he only called the insurance on my instruction to notify them that something has happened here in aruba and that for at a later

stage, he won't lose his claim. >> reporter: we tracked down an ex-girlfriend of jordan nope's who found nothing out of the ordinary about signing a similar policy and naming him the beneficiary. >> i had no reason to doubt him, i mean, i never felt like i was in any danger, so i didn't hesitate to sign him as beneficiary. i certainly didn't think he was going to kill me or try to collect on it. which, he didn't. >> just because she survived, a trip with gary giordano doesn't necessarily mean that he's not responsible in this case. >> reporter: this case is an eerie reminder of another infamous case that's marked aruba's recent history. >> because of the natalee holloway case, the gary giordano case is of natatnal importance. this suspect just a criminal investigation. this is aruba on trial.
