morning, as america remembers the attacks of 9/11 ten years ago, counterterrorism officials are working around the clock to prevent another terrorist attack.

and an all-night standoff inside an emeryville retail store ends when a police s.w.a.t. team moves in. >> good morning. we have low 50s at the coast. we can see from the sutra camera, not much in the way of low cloudiness. mid-50s in the south bay. and chances of thunderstorms this weekend. >> good morning, i'm terry mcsweeney. new york city is in alert mode this weekend. officials say two of the three men involved in a possible al-qaeda plot are believed to be u.s. citizens or have american traveling documents. abc news is reporting that officials now have the name of one of those three men. they are also concerned about a possibility of a car bomb plot for either new york or the nation's capital. counterterrorism officials can't corroborate the threat but say it comes from a reliable informant. the mayors are using their weekend addresses to send a

unified message. americans should honor victims and be vigilant about would-be terrorists. take a look at video from yesterday from ground zero where the attacks began. the attacks claimed more than 3,000 lives. for those who lost a loved one on 9/11, the pain is still immeasurable. wayne freedman is in new york city to bring us one of those stories. >> if you need to know about the ever-ending emotional pain from september 11th, ask a mother. >> what did you lose? >> a part of my life. my heart, my soul. it all went. >> ask a big brother. >> she was my big sister and she'll always be my big sister even though i'm now older than she is. i think about that. >> and a brother. >> she was a hero in our family. she was a hero whether or not she was a victim of 9/11.

naomi, one of 3,000 names we will hear at the world trade center on sunday. but so much more than that to her mother. but her mother had not looked at those photos in years. >> painful. too painful. >> at times like this a mother remembers were little girl who grew up to be a high school valedictorian, with who went on to stanford. she was the owner of a small computer company when she went to a technology seminar in the north tower. it was a rare visit. >> it was a coincidence. she was only there maybe 15 minutes before the plane struck. >> she was on the 106th floor. >> when the call came, both brothers told their mother. >> the hardest thing of my life. >> i think she jumped. i'm pretty sure. it's as if i dreamed it. i don't know. i'm pretty sure she would have jumped. >> even now she keeps her remnants of things in her house and garage. >> many things we've taken out and used. some things we've discarded. >> tangible stuff ten years

later from a life and loved one lost. >> it's no different for me from the 9th to the 7th or every single one. life isn't the same without her. that's all. it's a loss and a pain. never changes. night, day, doesn't matter. you know it's just not the right order of things. you shouldn't lose your children. >> wayne freedman reporting. in honor of those killed in the 9/11 attacks. the tower will glow red, white and blue all weekend long. san francisco mayor ed lee said 9/11 forever changed the world but the bay area is safer and stronger than a decade ago. he said it's important we take time to reflect. there are dozens of events taking place around the bay area that will allow people to come together to share their memories

and honor victims of september 11th. corina rust gives us a preview. >> public 9/11 events start early in oakland a predawn silent vigil will take place in conjunction with the newly unveiled champions monument. at 6:59 sunday morning every fire station will mark the time of the south tower collapse with the ringing of chimes. there will also be a special remembrance of at the 69ers season home opener against the seahawks. >> unfurling of a field long american flag which we've never had at the field before and a national anthem performance by brian mcknight, that we are really excited about. >> and thousands will gather at the san jose giants stadium. they are organizing a faith-based ceremony that will honor the victims and heroes of september 11th. >> we also are hoping that as we unite together there will be strength in saying, hey, there is something more in store and there's hope. >> at many events special recognition will be paid to first responders and those who have and are still serving in

the military. air for the lieutenant kim campbell is a fighter pilot who was called to duty after the attacks. she's also mayor chuck read's daughter. he will be attending two events. >> my daughter and son-in-law were among the first to go into iraq and have been deployed in iraq and afghanistan multiple times. my daughter has over 100 combat missions so its been very personal to me. >> it is a day on which at some point every american will likely pause to remember and to reflect. >> we are planning to put our flag out, both the front and the back. the back patio. and just remember the people who gave their lives that day. >> we will have coverage of the 9/11 anniversary throughout the weekend more reports from wayne freedman in new york and lilian kim in pennsylvania where a san francisco bound united flight 93 went down a three hour edition of good morning america starts at 5:00, followed by the

abc7 morning news from 8:00 to 10:00. >> and a police standoff in emeryville ended about a 4:30 as they caught a robbery suspect. they were called to the office depot store on holland street about 10:00 last night. an armed suspect was hold up inside after an apparent robbery attempt. police confirmed the suspect was alone. they used a s.w.a.t. team and police dog but it was tier gas that got the suspect out of a ceiling panel above an office. >> a fire warning is in effect for parts of the bay area until 11:00 tonight because of lightning strikes. ones like these have been moving into the area. there were several fires on mt. diablo last night. these pictures you are about to see will show the worst of the fires. a 60-acre blaze on west side in the walnut creek area.

no homes or buildings were threatened. >> going to the side it looked like it was moving down and not going back the other way. >> that muff worried you. >> yeah, a little bit. >> we were expecting lightning strikes. we had several ground fires that started. >> the fires declared completely contained last night but the firefighters still on standby in the diablo range. the red flag warning includes the north bay and down in the south bay down near monterey. we will find it exactly where that is and exactly how long that's in effect from lisa in a couple minutes.

it was one year ago yesterday an underground gas pipeline exploded in san bruno. on september 9th, 2010, the deadliest explosion in more than a decade killed 38 people and destroyed many heals. abc7 reports. >> the city of san bruno remembers the people who died a year ago. >> jessica morales. >> joseph lost his girlfriend. he, too, was severely burned by the fiery explosion. >> everywhere you go around this town, you know, certain areas are sad, and i can go on and on really. a lot of reminiscing. a lot of reminiscing this whole summer. [bell chime] >> allen and his wife narrowly escaped. they spent months in the hospital. >> we can put a lot of the stuff behind us but today brought some stuff forward we didn't really think about. but it's good to see everybody come together and do what we did.

>> his sister-in-law, sandy arnold, is in a wheelchair. one year ago this neighborhood was devastated after a pg&e gas pipeline exploded. killing 8 and injuring others. homes were destroyed. people tried to replace their grief with gratitude. >> this evening is our time to remember and celebrate the humanity of our community. >> many tried to find comfort by talking to others and those most familiar to them. >> i told them that it is a long process. it's certainly not over today. we're all going to be there for them, whatever they need. >> and congresswoman jackie spears says the work continues to try to bring closer to the victims of this explosion. in san bruno, abc7 news. >> and pg&e continues testing bay area gas transmission pipelines. crews have scheduled a water

welcome back. we are looking at a live picture of lake tahoe. looks like it's overcast up there. still dark. i don't care what the weather is going to be. lisa, is the sun going to shine? she said yes, the sun is going to shine at lake tahoe. even without it, a fantastic place to be. more from lisa in a couple minutes. thousands of people in pennsylvania are waiting for the go ahead to return home after heave flooding across the state. this is an amazing shot. that's a house. that's a house floating down the river, crashing into a bridge. you can so the roof just above the waterline there. after he hits the bridge, what's left that didn't come off when it crashed into the bridge, it continues floating down the

river. i've been talking to some friends from upstate new york, just amazing. it's really bad upstate. they say parts of vermont just wiped out. a house going down a river. here's lisa to talk about some strange weather around here. nothing at all compared to that but some different kind of stuff. >> we haven't talked much about the way of fire danger this entire summer but the winds are favorable in the the north bay with the offshore shore for at least 11:00 this morning to a lot of fog but only on the coast. we are talking three quarters after mile visibility around half moon bay and elsewhere partly cloudy to clear conditions. here's a look from above. you notice things looking pretty good. the official sunrise in about 30 minutes. we are talking about wide-ranging temperatures this morning with cooler 50s in the north and east. we are talking upper 60s elsewhere. how about 68 in antioch.

61 hayward. so that westerly wind not very strong this morning. we aren't seeing much in the way of a marine layer. in fact, it's less than a thousand feet and more of a south wind. that's keeping us very mild from san jose and even oakland at 59 this morning. so everyone much, much warmer. 14 degrees warmer this morning than yesterday morning in fremont. 3 degrees warmer in redwood city with ten degrees of warming overnight in the livermore valley. so a red flag warning is in effect for our north bay mountains above 1500 feet until 11:00. elsewhere the threat of dry lightning has been diminished. in fact, it has been cancelled. the dry lightning warning throughout the east and south bay because more of the moisture is coming in and that is preventing much of the dry lightning threat. so we are looking at actually some rain around santa maria, further south this morning. we will look for the onshore

flow to return tomorrow. we are talking about a cooler weekend with a threat of thunderstorms around monterey, and san benita county through sunday. a chance of showers into the northern sierra, but a better chance in the southern sierra. the red flag warning is still in effect for the southern sierra. about 1500 feet we have the offshore winds. the next couple hours the chance exists for some dry lightning in the north bay. i said the chance of thunderstorms all weekend long as an area of low pressure continues to set up to the south of monterey county. and with it we are looking at the subtropical moisture being bumped up. a little lift from the low. look at all the activity from santa maria eastward right on through the mountains. we are looking at this wet weather to continue. in fact, rotate to the north. fresno should be getting wet throughout the day today. we will be looking at kind of a muggy day throughout much of the southern sierra, as well. so we will call it partly cloudy in the south bay, but elsewhere

sunshine today. it looks like a nice afternoon throughout big sur, 72 there. hot in sacramento at 96. look for the upper 70s to the low 80s for campbell and sunyvale today. peninsula 77 with sunny skies. 78 palo alto. san francisco partly cloudy, 66 and in the north bay still look at the offshore winds with a very warm day around cloverdale. 92 there. 80 in novato. east bay 68. 77 castro valley. the inland valley no 90s. still warm there. and down in the monterey bay we are talking 68 in watsonville. the look ahead, you will notice we are cooler tomorrow and that weather pattern is going to stay with us. 60s, 70s and 830s tomorrow through next week. >> lisa, thanks very much. a pitching duel between the giants and dodgers last night at at&t. >> tim lincecum pitched well enough to win last night again.

once again he was beaten by dodgers ace clayton kershaw with giants bats unable to help. and aloha means some runs for timmy maybe? how about one. first inning, pablo sandoval into the hole. justin christian racing around third. the throw is cut off. 1-0, giants. almost had morris after shortstop. d gordon makes a sensational catch to rob cody ross. kershaw went 8 innings and beat timmy for the third time this season. the giants defense was also outstanding in the game. a seventh inning, line drive, justin sellers. and christian lays out to make the grab. awesome. timmy pitched 8 strong frames. no margin for error. in the eighth. juan rivera gets the ball up the middle and matt kemp scored. tied at one. and jamey carroll to second here. jeff keppinger is coming home. the former giant just beats the throw. dodgers win it 2-1. the d-backs victorious.

13-4. and the andruw luck heisman tour heads east with stanford at duke today. the cardinals favored by three touchdowns. stanford coming off a 54 victory over san jose state. facing a blue devils squad that lost their opener to little richmond. this game should be no contest, but luck says he takes nothing for granted. >> that's how every team sort of has to view it. we try to worry maybe more about how we are going to approach a game mentally as to how our opponent will approach the game mentally. i know watching their defense they are a good defense and maybe the game wasn't indicative of how strong a unit they have back there. >> cal will visit colorado. one of their new rivals in the pac 12. the bears won their opener, 36-21 over fresno state. zach maynard through for 266 and two touchdowns. the coach knows it will be challenging for him the first road game. >> it will be louder in boulder. get used to the huddle and communication and all the things. the growing pains that young guys go through when they get in different environments.

>> at least two of the three men involved in a possible al-qaeda attack trying to pull off an attack are believed be u.s. citizens or have american traveling documents. that's the word from washington. they are believed to threatened a car bomb. it comes from a reliable c.i.a. informant, but it cannot be corroborated. abc news is reporting that officials have found out the identity of one of the three people believed to be behind that terrorist threat. they are looking for him. they do not have him in custody. they just have a name right now. even though osama bin laden is dead and al-qaeda's central organization is believed to be unraveling, it is clear that the evolving al-qaeda organization still remains a threat. abc7as cheryl jennings looks at

what counterterrorism officials are calling al-qaeda 2.0. >> days after the deadliest terror attack on the u.s. soil the u.s. has a new public enemy number one, osama bin laden and his al-qaeda organization. >> i want justice. there's an old poster out west that i recall that said, "wanted dead or alive." it took almost a decade, but the pursuit paid off. in may navy seals killed bin laden when they stormed his compound in pakistan. al-qaeda was dealt a bigger blow. >> it was probably a bigger blow than we thought it would be because he was more engaged in the running of the organization than we had thought he might be. >> a lot of information recovered from his compound revealed an organization already on the ropes and in disarray. the c.i.a. drone strikes in pakistan have killed more than 1,000 militants in recent years, including just last month the

terror group's second in command. bin laden's successor, egyptian ayman alzawahri, is in hiding. previous siding over what many intelligence analysts believe is a lessee if he cantive, less cohesive organization. >> we've eliminated or captured scores of senior leaders. we've driven them more and more to be more, worried about their own safety than to attack us. in fact, military and intelligence leaders feel so confidence about the fight against al-qaeda, the defense secretary said with the killing or capture of ten to twenty key leaders, the collapse of al-qaeda could be within reach. >> if we can go after them, i think we really can strategically defeat al-qaeda. >> but others warn even if al-qaeda central is dismantled, there's a growing threat from al-qaeda 2.0, like one group based in yemen.

also a group in somalia. >> it's become a group with a lot of different heads. my theory is as the younger generation comes up, we may find they are more dangerous because they aren't locked into the strategies we've grown accustomed to facing, but they will have new strategies. >> strategies that involve recruiting more westerners for jihad. and using chemical or biological weapons that yield massive attacks. >> their goals have not changed. attacks will be smaller but they will still create a great psychological damage to the populations of this country and of other countries. >> ten years into the fight against al-qaeda, do intelligence officials believe the west is winning the war? >> we haven't gotten everything right, but we've gotten a lot of things right, and we certainly have al-qaeda on the back foot. >> there are still plenty of

terrorists out there, and we continue to have plenty to do in that regard. i think we've made important progress, but the story is not over. >> and likely won't be over anytime soon. cheryl jennings, abc7 news. there are going to be many bay area events this weekend to mark the tenth anniversary of the september 11th attacks. the redwood city fire department is honoring the 343 new york firefighters who were killed ten years ago by hosting a stair climb. firefighters, police officers and medics will search and and medics will carry the name of a fallen hero and climb the equivalent of 110 floors at the oracle office building. donations will be raised for the firefighters widows and or fans. and in danville people will gather for the preparedness fair. they will have fire safety information as well as car seat checks and earthquake kits. that's at the church from nine to two today. we will have coverage of the

9/11 anniversary throughout the weekend. we will check back in with abc7s wayne freedman in new york and lilian kim in pennsylvania where united flight 93 crashed. tomorrow morning a three hour edition of good morning america starts at five, followed by the abc7 morning news from 8 to 10. >> an all-night police standoff in emeryville end about 4:30 this morning as police capture a robbery suspect. they carried the suspect out of the office depot after finding him in a ceiling panel in the office. the armed suspect was inside. all of the employees have been accounted for. a s.w.a.t. team and a police dog were eventually sent into the storm but it was reportedly tier gas that got that suspect out of there. republicans in the state senate have blocked governor brown's plan to promote job creation through tax reform. brown's plan called for closing a 2009 tax loophole that benefited large, out-of-state

organizations. he wanted to use motor of the proceeds for tax breaks to encourage manufacturers and small businesses to buy equipment and expand. republicans rejected. as brown tried to rush through the gill on the last day of the legislative session and they want a special session dedicate today helping the struggling economy. at least three bills are awaiting brown's signatures. one prohibits customers from using self checkout isles when buying alcohol, another from carrying a handgun in public and the third would move all the special referendums to a different day. to national politics. president obama addressed congress thursday night on his jobs plan. the frontrunner rick perry was in the bay area slamming the plan. abc7 political reporter mark mathews caught up with the candidate in east palo alto. >> the front running republican

in the race for the white house said the president's jobs speech was more of the same. >> the president is talking about continuing these borrowing programs to create temporary jobs at best. >> before the president spoke last night, john boehner said americans didn't want to hear him. >> frankly, most would rather watch the football game. >> but according to the television ratings, 31 million americans watched the speech and political analysts say the president is daring congressional republicans to vote against the jobs package at their peril. >> either he gets their support for the stimulus package or he gets some footage or some prolonged arguments with the republicans which will -- he will be able to use in november. >> congressional republican leaders responded today by backing away from just saying no. >> the things that we don't like are the things that probably we should set aside and try to begin to work out here. but again, there's plenty of room for agreement. >> rick perry's donors, who paid between $1,000 and $5,000 to hear him in palo alto were about

evenly split over the president's speech. >> i have 10,000 members of my church and a lot of them need jobs. >> i think it was like every other speech he gives. a lot of rhetoric and very little substance. >> governor perry would not walk back his opposition to the president's job plan, but he did moderate his ponzi scheme of social security. this afternoon he said the federal program can be fixed. >> i think you can push back the age at which you can get in, where do you start, is it 40, is it 45, somewhere in there. but don't tell our kids, who are 30 years old who are out there working, to keep paying into this system and it will be there for you. >> the governor would not elaborate on what he meant when he said maybe you start it at 40 or 45 or somewhere around in there. it appears that what he was talking about is maybe everyone 40 or 45 and older would get to keep their social security and something else would happen for people who are younger than that.

like i say, he wouldn't elaborate. he walked away after answering that question. i am, however, absolutely certain it won't be the last time he's asked about it. in the newsroom, mark mathews, abc7 news. about 90 people suddenly laid off from the bankrupt from the bankrupt solynbra plant showed up at a job fair in newark, yesterday. president obama visited the company last year calling it a testament to american ingenuity. but last week they abruptly declared bankruptcy and shut down. former employees are desperate to get back to work. >> my grandkids live with me, my husband is very sick. we have no -- no benefits. he takes a lot of medication. so i need to find something. >> alameda county workforce investment board sponsored the solyndra event. they received unemployment as well as stress counseling.

and a special edition of good morning america tomorrow and our news starting at 8 until 10. lisa arkansas general joins us now. they could use good weather back there and looks like they are getting it. >> nice day in new york city. but back home fog at the coast. not like what we are used to. we have the gray skies. today not only sunshine you, but the threat after thunderstorm really mainly south of the bay area. but look at this. the view from mount tam. lots of fog here. we still have a red flag warning above that, above 1500 feet. so the level of the dry air is really providing the threat of perhaps a few lightning strikes and the possibility of fire above 1500 feet. below that we have not only the fog, we have wet weather, moisture in this area.

in 1921 amelia earhart wore them when she was learning to fly. she crashed. the goggles were kept by a woman who taught her to fly and wrote a book about it. and here's what was found in his mother's storage locker. >> i came across these. opened them up and they were amelia earhart, and she remembered from being a child. >> rare personal belongings to be auctioned off this weekend at the auction gallery in oakland. >> these items rekindled our imagination about the mystique of amelia earhart, a woman who became an icon. >> in the 1920s and 30s, she was like the female charles lindberg, pushing the limits of flight and broke a lot of equality barriers. >> i hope such equality could be carried out in other fields. >> she had an oakland connection. she flew out of here. in the around the world attempt in 1937 she disappeared. what happened has just added to the mystique. >> i didn't know in europe she

areas for cats. dogs have a play area with artificial gas. and they get other fountain. they will get a chance to view the kitten nursery. >> it's one of the areas that used to be behind the scenes. now we've taken it and made it into a feature that visitors can see when they walk in and look at all of our other animals up for adoption. >> the spca is one of the few shelters in the country that also cares for wild animals. the $25 million building was completely paid for through private donations. how can someone be delinquent on their property taxes for three years and not know it? part of the answer to that question is leading to changes in the tax bills alameda county sends out. 7 on your side michael finney said the problems that led to the changes wound up costing an abc7 viewer thousands of dollars. >> erica paid her property tax in 2008 online. she had this credit card statement as proof of her payment. only one problem, the payment was never credited to her account. >> i received a notice from my mortgage company that they

showed i had unpaid taxes with alameda county. >> over the next 26 months she would receive two tax delinquency notices from her mortgage company. both times she sent her mortgage company proof of payment. finally when she received her third notice in february of this year, she went straight to the tax collector's office. >> so i went down, hoping to get something from them to then give to my mortgage company saying, yes, you did pay your taxes. here's the proof. >> but that didn't happen. instead the tax collector's office told her her payment had been missapplied to her next door neighbor's property. >> so i said well that's great that you see that. can you please just apply it to my tax payment for me? >> but that didn't happen either. donald white is alameda county's tax collector. he said ericka had two years to correct the error and the two years have already passed. >> if we are contacted after that two-year period, then the state law, revenue and taxation code, does not give the

treasurer or the tax collectors the discretion of correcting the error. >> on top of that, he said his office sent erica five delinquency notices over the years. here's what one of those notices looks like. we asked a graphics designer of the san francisco based company, color bar, to look at it. >> as far as i can see, they are paid up. >> so did mandy see the delinquency notice? >> i don't see anything else that stands out to me. it's somewhat confusing. >> but the tax collector says it's there. >> it's big, it's bold. most people see it, most people read it. when they get their tax bill they will see urgent reminders. it's a special box on the bill. >> it's highly irregular. they are wrong. >> she said the urgent reminder is done in a 6 point font, half the size of most standard fonts.

donald white agrees changes needs to be made to the final bill. >> the idea now is to come up with different colors and make it color-coded. >> he also agreed to waive interest penalties on the late payments, a savings about $3,000 for erica. but erica will still be responsible for paying the back taxes owed. the tax collectors office said it never had a situation like this before. they said the changes to the tax bill would be implemented over the next two years. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side.
