relatives touched the names on walls. it's the new 9/11 memorial, symbol of resolve and hope. >> my father, who i never met because i was in my mom's belly, i love you, father. >> alan: ten years ago, 19 al qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger planes and nearly 3,000 people died in the largest loss of life from a foreign attack on u.s. soil. good evening, i'm alan wang. across the nation, bells tolled, heads were bowed, and prayers were subpoenas the nation mourned those who died on september 11th. lillian kim is live in shanksville, pennsylvania. let's give with wayne freedman in new york city. both president obama and former president bush were at the memorial there. >> reporter: they were. this was an event that was grand in scope and rich in emotion. it was much bigger and grander than we ever might have imagined. yesterday, we had two presidents, dignitaries,

politicians. we also had firemen but they were not invited to the formal ceremony. they have a tradition of their own. >> contrary to what you may have seen at home there was more than one ceremony at ground zero, more than the formal dedication, in the fire station, ladder ten, this was a reunion that felt like a wake. those five are on the wall here cast in bronze. five of the 343 firefighters who died on september 11th, and on this, the annual day of remembrance, ladder 10 just around the concerner from ground zero is the place where friends and families returned. >> my parents would agree that 9/11 is what took a toll on their relationship and ended their major. >> they have nod been back to this firehouse since she was ten years old, the night her father brought her to work two weeks before the fathers fell.

he surveyed but not unscathed or unscarred. >> mostly everybody that was here on 9/11 is either sick, retired, or -- >> my dad is not in the same man. >> i have a problem breathing. i don't sleep at night. i stop breathing when i sleep. i have had three operations on my sinuses. >> no one complains about those problems around here. ladder 10 has done on every september 11 until, they observe two moments, the two impacts and the two collapses, they remember the dirt and rubble that covered the station. it's gone now. the emotional rubble remains. >> i was supposed to be working that morning, and my friend worked for me, jeff ol' olson, and he died in my place. >> i want to stand by my dad's side and make him proud. do whatever it takes to make

that man be remembered. all my life i thought about him. >> we're bred to do this. everybody doesn't do this job. it's not for everybody. >> reporter: a note on this kristin is 20 years old and said based on post traumatic stress she sees in her father, she is studying to be a social worker. at 6:00 p.m. we give you a different view of the memorial. we got inside with a family member, mark sullivan. reporting live from new york city, wayne freedman, abc-7 news. >> alan: thank you very much. each year on this day the san francisco fire department holds a remembrance ceremony for the emergency responders and civilians who died. each of the city's 43 fire stations held a ceremony and the public was invited to attend. similar memorial services were also held at fire stations across the bay area.

>> flight 93 will forever connect the bay area to the september 11 attacks that left new jersey and was on its way to san francisco. the passengers fought the hijackers until the plane went down in shanksville, pennsylvania. thousands converged on the the flight 93 national memorial to honor them and that's where lillian kim is live with more. lillian? >> reporter: flight 93 was the flight of heroes, and today thousands of people joined family members to say thank you. >> on this tenth anniversary of 9/11. crowds flocked to the site where flight 93 crashed into the ground. the area is now a national memorial. this marble wall of names represents the plane's flight path. there's 40 names for each crew member and passenger. >> debbie lost her daughter on flight 93. she was a junior and was

returning after visiting friends in new jersey. she has accepted the fact that what happened was beyond her control. >> we took her to the airport early because i had to make my class, and i played that over in my head over and over, and now i know it's not my fault. >> any lovely mother. >> my beautiful sister. >> today, family members carried on the 9/11 tradition of reading the names of the people onboard of flight 93 who are heroes. they fought to regain control of the plain from the hijackers, and they did save the lives of those in the u.s. capital that day. wide by believed to be the hijackers intended target. president obama and first lady michelle obama laid a wreath and met with family members. not everyone decided to attend

the commemoration. he says he'll visit the memorial on his own, away from the crowds. his wife was three months pregnant on 9/11. the marble slap with her name pays tribute to the unborn child. >> the child should be represented in what was lost that day, and maybe a symbol of an unborn generation that maybe to other generations that are being born now will inspire them to live a more peaceful and understanding life. >> this new memorial will be closed to the public tomorrow. that's when family members will be holding a private ceremony to bury some of the remains of the victims of flight 93. live in shanksville, pennsylvania, abc-7 news. >> alan: and hundreds of miles northwest of shanksville, ceremony was held honoring the 184 victims who died at the pentagon. ♪ >> alan: flowers were placed at

benches etched with the victims' names. a huge american flag unfurled from the top of the pentagon, and president obama, accompanied by the first laid lady and defense attorney laid a wreath at the memorial. the president will speak at a concert tonight in washington, dc. >> today, millions of americans repeated what they did ten years ago. they sought comfort in their faith. john alston is live in golden gate park where a special service just wrapped up. >> reporter: the hundreds of people here heard a mixture of opera and spiritual messages from near lay dozen religions. >> religious unity was on full display in golden gate park. the event brought together music lovers and those who turned to faith to get them through the horror of 9/11. >> most faiths believe we're here to do good, and certainly the jewish faith does that

because we have a part of it which is to repair a broken world. san francisco opera's opera in the park happened to coincide with the anniversary. and along with the interfaith council, the event was turned into a celebration of religious solidarity. >> america is all religious communities and you cannot demonize any faith. so have to build brings. >> as a muslim american because of the association with 9/11 and islam, it actually took quite a bit of time for us to begin the healing process and the groving process. >> among the guests was former secretary of state george schultz. >> always the question of their faith and you're values, and particularly in this country and other countries as well, the conviction that people have a right to their on exprlg you

found inside the apartment near the city's diamond district. we're live with more. >> reporter: you can see that the forward rooms of the two-story building were pretty badly burned out. a neighbor tells us there were two bodies fund in one -- found in one of these forward units. the fire started around 1:00 this morning and his neighbors came to his door saying the building was on fire. the bodies of a man and woman were found in a burntout second floor apartment. they believe one of the victims suffered wounds that were inflicted before the fire. a neighbor says he did not know the people in that front apartment. >> we knew from the fire department there were two bodies found. there was a neighbor who said he had seen a couple of individuals wearing a hooded sweatshirts come running out of the building and run down the street carrying a can that looked like a gas

can. but he didn't see faces and couldn't tell if it was men or women. >> reporter: crime scene investigator from the oakland police and the oakland fire department spent most of the day sifting through the ashes of the fire, trying to find any clues, but both departments have not released any further details on this incident. reporting live in oakland, abc-7 news. >> alan: the change of pace for the survivors of that san bruno pipeline explosion. they attended a reunion with several other members of the neighborhood that was shattered by the explosion, and the relaxed atmosphere was a welcome change compared to the one-year anniversary of the blast. >> if the tsa month is any indication, tomorrow at this time san francisco b.a.r.t. passengers can expect possible disresumptions in service again. for the past four mondays a

mainly east bay and south bay. get ready for some sunshine tomorrow. once the low clouds peel back to the coast, by mid-day, and then we'll start to warm up tuesday and wednesday. now, i want to show you the live doppler 7 hd. you notice some of thing a tight right -- some of the activity by marin county, and the storms are raging right now. kings beach, incline village, south lake tahoe. incline village reported dime-size hail. so notice all this activity moving from east back to west, because of the rotation. that's why i'm going to keep a slight chance of a shower or thunder in the forecast, all because of the low pressure set up just off the southern california coastline. this low is going to start to move towards the east, and it's going to take a lot of the moisture with it. so look for improving weather conditions, and the humidity
