after al qaeda terrorists hijacked passenger planes and rammed them into the world trade center and the pentagon. a fourth jet crashed into a pennsylvania field after passengers battled the hijacked in flight. in all three places today was a day of mourning and memory. lillian kim is live in shanksville, but first wayne freedman is at ground zero and joins us. >> reporter: over my shoulder, one of the two reflecting pools. they look sensational from ten stories up. today we walked right down next to it, to appreciate the grandness and scope of it. you need to stand next to a pool in the footprint of what used to be a skyscraper. this are the faces of people still in mourning. the ones who returned again to ground zero this morning. the ones with stories for every name. >> would have been 40.

so, you lose a child you lose the future. >> loss would be the great equalizer in this place today. >> could be nip, the richest person, the poorest person. you're all equal that day there. >> mark is a bay area attorney. the brother of a woman who died without a trace when the first tower fell. he came to ground zero before. today he hoped it might feel more final. >> thought finally there's a spot. we didn't have any remains so that is her final resting spot. >> not just anyone could get into the memorial on this, its first day. only family members and guests and even they passed through security. with automatic 3,000 victims there may have been 10,000 visitors inside, each observing the day in his or her way. some carried pictures. they would wait to go inside.

>> like a great battlefield site. >> a battlefield transformed. each pool the foot pript of a twin ottowa. names etched in bronze. >> very uplifting and also a void. the good and the bad comes through here. >> reporter: for mark and his family, this is all that formally remanies of his sister, this and memories of a woman ex-successful in business, taken in her prime, loss formalized in history rat ground zero. >> that is effect the final memorial cemetery for everyone that was killed there. >> reporter: marks mother was one of the people who wanted to come to the memorial. she couldn't make the trip. mark said after he visited he was going to call her on the telephone and tell her it is, in his words, beautiful, and it does justice to the victims.

in new york city, abc-7 news. >> alan: you're looking live at new york city tonight. where ground zero is illuminated with two beams of light marking the location where the twin towers once stood. [bell ringing] >> alan: in shanksville, pennsylvania, bells tolled and the names of she victim's heroes of flight 93 were read. president obama and first lady, michelle obama, laid a wreath at the new memorial for those who died there hill yap -- lillian kim is live from shanksville. >> reporter: the flight 93 crash sight is considered sacred gowned which is why so many people felt compelled to come here. many planned this trip for months. for others it was a spur of the moment decision. >> we were just driving. went to pick up the kids, and we just decided, this is the place we needed to be today. >> reporter: the flight 93

national memorial was unveiled yesterday, and since then thousands have flocked to see it. the crash site is preserved and the marble represents the flight path. his sister says her one brother was killed in vietnam and his names on that memorial's wall in washington, d.c. >> i understand at it -- it's an honor, and i like ken will not be forgotten, but they don't -- i don't know if it's overwhelming. brings up sad ms. in me to think they're names have to be on that wall, you know? >> reporter: today family members carried on the 9/11 tradition of reading the names of the people onboard flight 93. they fought to game control of the plane from hijackers and

saved the lives of those in the u.s. capitol today, widely believed to be the high jack es intended tarring. president obama and his wife paid tribute by laying a right. not everyone attended the kim enemy racing. jack of san rafael remained in the bay area. he says he'll visit the memorial on his own, away from the crowds. his wife lawyer -- lauren was three months pregnant. the martial slab with -- marble slab with her name also has the name of her child. >> what was lost that day, maybe the symbol of an unborn generation, maybe to other generations being born now, will inspire them to live a more peaceful and understanding life. >> reporter: as much attention as the new memorial has been getting, it's far from complete. there are several more phases, including 40 growths of trees for each passenger and crew

member of flight 93. lyle. >> alan: the pentagon was hit ten years ago. today flowers were placed on 184 benches. ♪ >> alan: uniformed members of the armed services did the honors as a huge american flag was unfurled from the roof, and president obama ended his visits at the three 9/11 memorial sites by silently laying a wreath. the president's only planned public remarks will we tonight at a memorial concert in washington, dc. >> back here in the bay area, san francisco firefighters paused this morning to remember their new york city counterparts who perished ten years ago. >> robert wallace. robert crawford. >> alan: fire chief joe an hays white joines firefighters at station 15 on ocean avenue, reading the names of all 343 fallen new york firefighters. similar ceremonies took place

outside of all of san francisco's 43 fire stations this morning. [bell ringing] >> alan: and members of the coast guard held a september 11th tribute in coast guard island in alameda. the coast guard played a major role helping secure america's ports and harbors against potential terrorist threats. >> in san jose, a faith-based mass progression and ballpark ceremony brought hundred office people together on this 9/11 sunday. ♪ >> alan: the cathedral of st. joseph was peaked with worshipers for the mass. a march was held down market street. and at the city's minor league ballpark, color guard honored the lives lost on 9/11. in 25 people from the bay area died on september 11th september 11th attacks. let's take a moment now to remember them.

detained after the crew that left denver reported suspicious activity. the crusade two people were spending a long time in the bathroom on the flight. >> in missouri airport security detained a man at kansas city international airport. southwest airlines said the man refused to allow security agents to examine something in his bag. the times tested ed negative for explosive material. and the white. >> in oakland tonight, police say two people found burned to death may have been murdered. the bodies of a man and a woman were discovered on the second floor of a burning east oakland apartment building this morning. one of the victims appears to have possible wounds not associated with burns. >> we knew from the fire department there were two bodies found. there was a neighbor who said he had seen a couple of individuals

wearing hooded sweatshirts, come running out of the building and run down the street, carrying a can that looked like a gas can. but he didn't see faces and couldn't tell if it was men or women. >> homicide officials are already conducting a preliminary investigation. meanwhile, police in contra costa county fear a suspected hijacker might steal more vehicles after swiping at least three others today. the suspect ended up lawing -- plowing into cars, fences fenced street signs. police say the man started in hercules when the man carjacked a driver, and stole another car after the first one broke down, and stole a green ford explorer and got away. >> special tribute to a bay area man who died on september 11th a best overcast today, but what's ahead? leigh glaser will have the work week forecast coming up. >> mike: the 49ers save their best for last, ted ginn logging

because in the sierra, some strong weather going on. oakland is 70. napa, 73. 72 in antioch. and livermore right now, 74. here's a look at our highlights. i'm going to keep a slight chance, a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm in our overnight forecast. mainly east bay and south bay locations. on radar you see them talking about it. look for afternoon sunshine tomorrow, and here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. earlier in the day a few cells just rotated back over the bay area. we reported in marin county sprinkles there. you can see where the action is. numerous, hundred opposite -- hundreds of lightning strikes in the sierra, and this is moving 'back towards the west. this is why i'm going to keep a slight chance of an isolated storm in the forecast. the low is going to move to the

east and take a lot of it with us. kings beach, south lake tahoe, these thunderstorm cells moving toward rock linn and sacramento. here's a look at the coast. lower pressure just off the southern california coast. you can see the counterclockwise spin, and all of this moisture will start to feed towards the east. so we look for some better weather conditions, less humidity conditions monday and tuesday. here's a look at our highs for tomorrow. much like today. 79 for san jose, 76 for cupertino. start off with overcast at the coast and breck out for afternoon sunshine. so half moon bay, 64. downtown tomorrow, 68. north bay, a little bit of overcast, mid-day clearing. 76 expected high for santa rosa. 75. vallejo.

>> alan: hundreds of pay area residents devoted themselves to a day of service. those who volunteered their team hoped to turn the day an opportunity to grow instead of lingering in the pain of the past. >> planting a plot is not the first thing you think of to commemorate 9/11, but for roger, this is a chance to change the tone of the day. >> a way to get out and sounds cheesy, but making a difference that everybody can visibly see. >> one of 300 volunteers who fanned out throughout san francisco and parts of the bay area. their mission is simple. >> just a way to change tragedy and put it into action. >> their action reached throughout san francisco. at the empress hotel, volunteers

rolled up their sleeves, then rolled on some paint, in the halls of this low-income housing property. >> aim fairly patriotic person, 12 years in the military, and it's a duty. >> there's a dozen volunteer opportunities throughout the city, and quite a few throughout the bay area, including this one in richmond. tilling this urban garden at a richmond school brought out 40 people to work the earth and pick vegetables. >> since 9/11 a lot of us realized there's something bigger than ourselves, and that it's important to be part of your community and give back to our community. >> reporter: the vegetables from the garden will be distributed to needy richmond families. >> alan: that's it for abc-7 news. thanks for joining us. see you tonight at 11:00. stay tuned at 11:35
