mcsweeney. rest of this weekend's air races of cancelled as federal investigators look into the cause of horrific plane crash. three people died including the stunt pilot. dozens were injured. nannette miranda reports from the scene race officials suspect a mechanical problem sent the plane into a nosedive. >> spectators describe the scene as horrific a plane crashed into the box seats at the races near reno nevada. >> it gets twisted and turned and wham! >> i saw the plane go straight in the ground right at the grandstands. it was unbelievable. there was no fire. there was no explosion. it was like asphalt dust and parts and things flying through the air. >> the pilot jimmy leeward was flying his mustang went something went terribly wrong.

>> the plane turned hard he must have been hard on the stick to get as far away from the stands as possible. >> he went boxed seat area to one side of the grandstands in the resulted of mass casualty situation. one medical officer at the scene more than 75 people were injured many of them critically. scores were taken to area hospitals. >> i was wondering how many people got hurt. >> inspectors at the scene during the crash saying there were no flames upon impact but the debris field was widespread. >> we are all devastated by this tragedy. we are doing everything we can to work with the folks that directly and personally affected by this. >> the cause of crash is still under investigation. an air show official thinks

there are indications that points to mechanical problems. i'm nannette miranda "abc 7 news." >> jimmy leeward was flying the plane, he was well known for his skill and a legend among flying enthusiasts. fay taltsd in yesterday is extremely rare. >> in the history of air racing this never happens because of all the regulations safeguards that are put in the place. in the last 50 years there have been one spectator fatality at an air show. so the safety record has been spectacular for decades and decades. >> safety record is not good for the pilot. over the 44-year history there have been a total of 19 deaths from crashes and collisions in 2007 two pilots died over the course of four days. leeward named his plane the

gallon opening ghost. it was p-51 mustang. it sat in a hangar for 20 years and brought out of retirement three years ago. he made modifications to the plane including shortening the wings. back in 1999 another air show crash was caught on video. the plane is just beneath the red one. this one was also a world war ii p-51. it slammed into a neighborhood 12 miles north of reno. two bystanders hit by gunfire are hospitalized this morning but they are expected to survive. on broadway and montgomery about 2:00 this morning. the officers was trying to take a wanted person into custody. they shot at him after running from the officers. suspect is now in custody. they have his weapon but won't

elaborate and police are announcing how many officers fired their guns, or they are not saying how many shots they fired. >> they are looking far man that suspected a string of crimes. all night search of an apartment complex ended at 5:00 with no sign of the suspect. the it started yesterday morning when a man opened fire at a gas station. two hours later he carjacked a vehicle and tomas ramon reports the search ran cold after he was seeing running into apartment complex. >> at about 6:30. they surrounded the monitored clare homes. it happened moments after they shot the suspect they had been chasing all day long. man is seen here at a chevron surveillance gas station is surveillance video. he asked him for money and shot him once. he took off in the stolen black nissan which police found in a

parking lot. here the man according to police carjacked a white lexus belonging to cindy 51-year-old old. they traced the car here to the home. >> i can tell you they felt threatened enough there force was necessary. they did engage in gunfire. >> he sez told police that he saw the suspect run into the apartment. and nygun who called for assistance but then pa disappeared. >> asking for help and the battery died. five minutes later she called that an hispanic person was offering to help her and that is the last we heard of her. >> they don't know the whereabouts of kidnapped victim. >> that is our main priority is to reunite the victim safely. we are hoping to take this

suspect into custody and interview this person and that person can help us find the victim there is another delay in the pending release of two americans imprisoned in iran. one judge signed release for the two hikers that have been jailed. earlier this week, mahmoud ahmadinejad said the two men would be released for humanitarian reasons within days. they were arrested with sara shourd along the border more than two years ago. shourd was released last year. >> today family and friends of missing nursing student michelle le will be searching once again for her. the about how wide was not been found despite several searches and the family is still holding out hope they will find her. hay yard authorities have charged giselle esteban with

murder. they believe she killed le because she blamed her for breaking up a relationship. investigators are trying to determine what sparked a ten acre brush fire in benicia yesterday evening. it started about pga yesterday evening flames caught brush and grass along lake herman road. no structures were damaged. in fact officials say the wind fanned the flames away from homes. firefighters had the flames under control around 7:00 p.m. >> this morning 200 redwood city homes are being asked to boil their drinking water after a contamination scare. they discovered an unauthorized well in an area boarded by woodside road ands very road. 57,000 gallons had been pumped into the water system in the past two weeks. >> i don't know how long it been going on. it could have been going on

a napa woman accused of hacking with anonymous says she is innocent. she has pleaded not guilty to hacking in the pay pal website. they were protesting the decision to block donations to the internet whistle-blower wikileaks. >> i clicked on the site and joined the protest. next thing i know about three months later i was, in the morning about 6:00 a.m. and my house was surrounded. >> her attorneys believe the case against her and other

a sunny afternoon in pacifica the winds not quite as gusty 80 los altos. sunny skies all across the city with 75 in san rafael 85 in cloverdale. north bay really warming up and near east bay it will feel good out there with light wind. 69 in oakland. are 74 in fremont. warming up about six degrees 80 in dublin and monterey that is where the fog is. pretty gray here. 64 with sunny nephew and 78 in gilroy. seven-day forecast shows today the warming trend by 3-6 degrees. tomorrow another five degrees or so. back in the low to mid 90s for monday and still staying above normal into next week. it's been cool at my house so i am looking forward to it.

good morning federal investigators are launching a problem in yesterday's horrific plane crash in reno that killed three people including the pilot and injured dozens of speck at a time others the ground. >> terry good morning. many people that we spoke to what they saw was the worst thing they have ever seen. one man a veteran said he thought he was in the middle of a war zone. the plane hit so hard that it sent debris flying into the crowd of bystanders. >> something was wrong. it spiraled out of control.

>> i saw this plane just go straight into the ground boom right in the grandstands. it just, it was unbelievable. there was no fire or explosion. it was like asphalt dust and parts and things flying through the air. i couldn't believe it. >> this was the sight carnage and chaos. bodies strewn across the airfield. people were using their shirts as makeshift tourniquets. hospitals were told to prepare for hundred casualties. >> the plane was flown by air racer jimmy leeward. they describe him as an experienced pilot. what happened is under investigation. preliminary reports point to a possible mechanical problem. >> that is that the aircraft could have had some flight control problems. it went into the tarmac in front

hospitals are planning the largest labor action in years. our media partner reports up to 23,000 nurses could be involved in the strike. at children's hospital oakland sutter and kaiser permanente facilities. they plan to bring in replacement workers. strike is planned for one day hospital administrators say they will lock out striking nurses since five-day contracts have been signed with replacements. >> a group of moms on the peninsula is holding a party to fight poverty. eric thomas shows us how the mothers have embraced families here and overseas and showing you how you can help. in a donated corner of a warehouse a small group of parents put together gifts that will be auctioned off in a couple of days. fourth year in a row these suburban moms will turn their attention from jobs to carpools to helping total strangers.

mount tam and you can see the clouds and take a look at the branches they are moving around we've got wind and sunshine on the way. lisa argen and quite frankly she is never wrong. she will be up in a minute. >> a lot of volunteers will pick up trash and junk on california beaches today. it is the 27th coastal cleanup day. this is the largest volunteer event drawing help of 80,000 beach lovers and 800 different locations. beaches and several counties and event draws so many people that organizers are asking to bring your own reusable trash collecting tools to try to cut down on the volume of trash itself. and how conscious they are they don't want to create more trash the whole point is to get it off the beaches. >> lisa argen you are never

little fog. i think this is it today because tonight it should be clear with the hottest weather coming in about tuesday or wednesday. you see the fog that has moved across the bay look what happens within the next hour. it really breaks up. so we're going to see sunshine at ocean beach half moon bay even point reyes with the wind backing off. it's pleasant there and numbers even at the coast will be warming up in the days ahead. 60s at the shoreline but numbers coming into the upper 70s around the bay with mid on 80s in inland valleys. a little bit warmer and low pressure couple troughs still wanted to get close. we won't file their influence for the first time really all summer long. in fact we're going to see this high take over. that is going to keep the low pressure and cooler air and stronger sea breeze at bay. with the wind shifted highs are going to win out.

that means dry weather headed our way. so today 86 in fresno with 80 in yosemite. you know the higher levels of the atmosphere are already pretty dry but the drier air will be working its way down to the surface so be careful out there this entire week. 81 in campbell. 75 in sunnyvale. mid-70s in redwood city 60s at our coast. sunny day in golden gate park 80 in sonoma. upper 60s to low mid-70s so despite the shorter days it's going to be beautiful one today 85 in brentwood and 81 in pleasanton. monterey this is where the fog is sunny within the next 11:00 hour and morgan hill comes in upper 70s. we're warming a little bit today. another 5 degrees tomorrow. low to mid 90s and then the coast is going to warm up near

little big they are week and so did the habitat for several endangered species as jonathan bloom reports a little digging is reversing decades of damage to the bay area's coastline. >> the photographers and conservationists gathered to watch one big machine to dig a hole. reaching the levee to make a salt pond. >> as the tides fill in the pond we'll start growing the plants and bringing the wildlife in behind them. >> this pond and others like it were used for manufacturing salt. with few strokes of a massive shovel they will turn it back into a coastal wet land and home for endangered species of birds fish and mice. >> it's important for the health of the bay. over the past decade, san francisco bay has lost 80-90% of the tidal marshes. >> it looked dry and barren and

when an airline wouldn't let her sit with her two small children. michael finney has the story. flying can be rough. you can stuck in seats and watching a movie you don't like. and then there a line to the bathroom even tougher when you are only 4 years old. that is why andrea made sure her two children sit next to mom or dad when they fly. >> they don't understand the seat belt light flashes and they don't know bathrooms are. >> so the family booked seats together when they flew to washington, d.c. this summer. four-year-old and six-year-old would each sit by a parent. however days before the flight united e-mailed them saying there was a change of air passes and they had new seat sioysd and they were not sitting together. sandra was in row 23 and annika

was in row 24. seated next on a stranger. united said they couldn't put them together because there were no open seats. >> they say it's perfectly acceptable. >> she couldn't imagine what would happen if children needed help and total stranger was suddenly a surrogate parent. >> i don't think it's a stranger's responsibility person needs to take care of it and event of an emergency. >> she said they offered to seat the family together if they paid more but paying more was unfair since they had booked seats together. the family was ready to hold up a sign asking passengers to switch seats. it didn't can quite that far.

>> we all talked about it. >> the family and united ticket agents asked other passengers to help and they did after shuffling each got to sit with a parent. >> the bigger issue to us why is this policy in place that it's okay we have friends that a two-year-old could sit apart from her tomorrow. >> she contacted "7 on your side". we ask united about this and airline says it does have a policy to keep kids with parents in case of an change our system is programmed to keep families seated together. when it's not possible agents will attempt to re-seat customers to accommodate families. >> it seems very simple straightforward situation you make sure that young children are their parents. >> united contacted the family offering an apology and a voucher for future flights. >> in days you are wondering there are no faa regulations
