good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm carolyn tyler. today the nation formally recognizes the contribution martin luther king with the dedication of a long-awaited memorial bearing his likeness and name. just moments ago president obama gave the keynote address, part of a three hour celebration, this is live look. let's listen what the president is saying.

>> for those that are willing to work. in other words, when met with hardship, when confronting disappointment, dr. king refused to accept what he called the isness of today. he pushed for the oughtness of tomorrow. so as we think about all the work we must do, rebuilding an economy that can compete on a global stage and fixing our schools, so that every child gets a world class education. >> we are hearing the first black president honoring the legacy of a trailblazer, dr. martin luther king. 15 years after congress passed a resolution to build this $120 million tribute, five years after the groundbreaking and seven weeks after hurricane irene forced cancellation of the

first planned dedication. thousands are there now on the national mall celebrating and paying tribute. members of the king family are there as well as many civil rights leaders some of whom marched with king. even more important perhaps is how ordinary americans are making the trip to washington to see the memorial. to take pride in what it stands for. the celebration is about what the country has overcome on the path to justice and equality for all. abc's ron clayborn more on how the monument impacts those. >> granite and soaring 30 feet, it joins the great american president's with monuments nearby, washington, jefferson and lincoln where king gave his famous i have a dream speech in 1963. >> i have a dream. >> joseph lowry, now 90 years

old was a king's close e-confident. >> to honor the movement that he lived in such a fashion. >> on the day before the official ceremony hundreds visited the king memorial. >> it was like a dream come true to see this happen. >> i think there is something for me today. >> you can see every everybody is seeing how he changed america. >> he was ten years old when he was assassinated. the children approved the design of the memorial. >> the first emotion i had when i skua the monument, i had to fight back tears of joy. >> there has been controversy. first over the selection of a chinese sculpture, some thought he should have been african-american or at least american. now, there is growing criticism over the quotation.

it reads -- >> for justice, peace.... >> in actual speech, he condemned people like they are drum major, the leader. he actually said, if you want to say if ways drum major, say i was drum major for justice. miya said the quote lacking the word if, makes it apier arrogant. but people are here to pay homage to the man. ron clayborn reporting. after the dedication is complete. the party begins. the scheduled performers, james taylor, jennifer holiday and sweet honey. >> local news, local police and chp are searching the financial district right now for a man who fired shots at chp officers during an overnight chase.

the suspect's vehicle crashed into a metal garage door on a building half a block from the transamerica pyramid. police last saw the man running from the scene. they have now sealed off an area where they think he might be hiding. since just after midnight they have been searching the area. nobody was hit by the gunfire. san jose police are investigating the shooting death of a man during yesterday's funeral for a murdered hells angels leader. fatal shooting took place during a cemetery during gravesite services for jeffrey pettigrew. here is a report from san jose. >> reporter: these photos taken by san jose resident valerie simpson shows the people attending the funeral. >> quo we don't know the circumstances. we're going to look into it to

determine whether this was an isolated incident or something random. >> he was shot to death in sparks nevada by a member of the motorcycle club last month. they don't know if the shooting is connected. this photograph caught seconds after the shooting. they think it can help. >> they had a photographer that witnessed at least individuals jumping on what they believe to be the shooter. there is a possibility there are individuals as witnesss. >> reporter: there were an estimated 4,000 hells angers jells members at the cemetery. the sergeant says police found a problem with the crime scene when they responded. >> when the officers arrived they found what appeared to be a crime scene that had been tampered with. >> valerie simpson took the photos of the hells angels. she says all the mourners were

well behaved until this happened. >> not anything. it was just beautiful. i had great vibrations all morning. >> san jose had a large contingent of officers all well armed but they didn't anticipate this type of violence and it was difficult for officers to be everywhere. >> when you look at 4,000 individuals, it's very difficult to prevent anything from occurring. >> the victim is believed to be a member of the san jose chapter of the hells angels. they don't know if it will result in acts of retaliation. but they have stationed officers at the san jose hells angels clubhouse. two men have died after a shooting in oakland. police were called to macarthur boulevard near interstate 580 where they found both victims. one died at the scene. the other at a local hospital.

investigators say they have some leads on suspects but no arrests have been made. just days after the resignation of oakland's police chief. the mayor announced a plan to reduce violent crime incidents like that. the major focus will be to zero in on 100 oakland's city blocks. >> about the time oakland officials were announcing a plan to fight crime nemo foundation was holding a barbecue. there was crisis counseling and burial arrangements. >> gangs in the streets and in the neighborhoods. i'm going give it on the days to see how it works out. >> at the gym, the mayor announced her plan months in the work to reduce crime in oakland.

>> to take existing resources and committing them to this overlap, saturation and concentration in these neighborhoods. >> police say they will target 100 city blocks throughout east and west oakland that account for nearly all the shootings and homicides in the city. department is promising more police foot patrols, job training and their relationships to solve crimes. the interim chief that was promoted is counting on the addition of 25 officers due to a state grant. >> we are trying to reduce crime and putting officers in locations where we think most violent crimes are taking place. >> while police plan to focus on the top hundred blocks for crime. they say it will not commit the expense of the rest of the city but it will be a challenge to

a private memorial service will be held today for steve jobs and some of silicon valley's biggest names are

expected to attend. "wall street journal" reports it will be held in stanford university. they plan to host an event at their headquarters on wednesday. as you know he died earlier this month, october 5th after struggling for years with pancreatic cancer. the governor has issued a proclamation declaring today jobs day in california. in the proclamation, he says jobs changed the entire world communicates. >> the white house is dropping plans to keep thousands of u.s. troops past the withdrawal deadline. pentagon had considered leaving up to 5,000 troops in iraq to train security forces and hinder iranian influence, but yesterday a senior administration official said all-american troops will leave except for about 160 service members who are attached to the u.s. embassy. a u.s. military official says the withdrawal could include

limited u.s. military training missions if requested. the leader of the san diego republican party got busted for setting up twitter accounts in the name of his democratic opponent. the local gop president registered the unused name for several opponents on twitter and used those accounts to tweet ridiculous comments, among his targets with four city council candidates and democratic chairman counterparts. >> he is trying to fool people to they it was me. >> it was a long time twitter tradition, obviously the democrats didn't like that. >> what is frustrating that the voters and the average voter is out there saying, you know, we hate politics because of this sort of thing. >> twitter made the san diego republican party president ditch

still a slight chance of an isolated shower this morning but overall, looking at partly sunny to mostly sunny conditions. temperatures are going to come up another five degrees tomorrow so it should be a little above normal. today a little bit below normal. now, we are looking at the clouds hanging on for the time being. we'll have them peel back and see 60s and 70s and perhaps in the 80 degree readings far out to the east. we are looking at changes. this morning, our system moves through, a weak system that brought rain showers in the san mateo coast all the way up to marin and east bay. there is a lot of moisture offshore. you'll notice a couple of cells that continue to enhance the cloud cover throughout the morning hours. then we'll look for this system to visit us mid-week. that is going to bring a little bit of a cooldown. between now and then a weak ridge builds in and we're going to see the sunshine. a chance of a shower this

morning. is then a slightly warmer day tomorrow. highs back home in the south bay. couple degrees cooler, right around average. 75 in san jose. 74 in cupertino. peninsula still a lot of cloud cover here, but then low 70s. 74 redwood city. half moon bay, a little cooler than yesterday but those onshore breezes won't be as brisk. mid and upper 60s. as you head towards the coast here, 68 downtown in the north bay. it took a while for the clouds to thin out. low to mid-70s. near east bay communities, upper 60s for berkeley and richmond. low 70s should do it for san leandro. looking at 74 in fremont. nice afternoon, enjoying sunshine in walnut creek, 76 this afternoon there. down by the monterey bay, a nice day, with 68 there and 77 in hollister. >> so a little bit of warming

niners head to motown to the undefeated detroit lions. this is the biggest game for both teams w after a 48-3 win over tampa bay. lions are powered by their defense but alex smith is not buying into the big game hype. >> every time you strap on the helmet and you walk into those lines and onto the field it's enough as it is. you are playing for your team and your job. all of a sudden, you really try to win. >> raiders are coming off a great road victory over houston. team will honor mr. davis today in the first home game since his passing to just win baby.

san francisco protestors are preparing to march on the federal reserve bank this week as the occupy wall street grows in intensity worldwide. >> in italy, chaos erupted in the streets of rome when demonstrations yesterday turned violent after a splinter group of anarchists went on a rampage. in the bay area, things were much calmer, people hitting the streets of oakland and san francisco calling for economic change. >> reporter: a national day of action, thousands took to the streets. >> i wanted to see more bailouts for the people. >> jake applegate marched with his mother katherine. >> the early days of the civil rights movement. people are really angry. >> they were among the droves of people who flooded to san francisco streets.

in oakland. hundreds more also marched through downtown for a rally. >> because they are talking about it. >> reporter: in berkeley a smaller group added their voices to the growing crowd. >> with banners and bullhorns they got their message. >> the economy is faltering. >> reporter: but in uniform and business suits, some participants paid special attention to the way they presented themselves. he wore the only business suit he owns. >> i'm sort of dismayed with the people, corporate media to be the mouthpieces of the movement. >> message is simple but it gets lost. >> pre-1970, unskilled labor

could afford for a mortgage and pay for a college and that is not possible anymore. >> for weeks, the occupy group, now they have decided to expand to justin herman plaza, they are going to start living here but continue the demonstration a block away at the federal reserve. demonstrators in new york or the move making their way from wall street to times square where thousands staged a noisy rally this weekend. here is report from lower manhattan. >> occupy wall street was transformed into occupy times square. the demonstration turned disorderly. >> this came hours after 6,000 occupiers flooded the

intersection. most of saturday's crowd was calm, officers took no chances as necessity cleared the streets at nightfall. earlier in the day, 24 demonstrators were handcuffed and removed from a nearby citibank charged with criminal trespassing. in california to to florida, occupied supporters were out in full force. back in new york, it was busy day for demonstrators, they marched to greenwich village. >> us taxpayers are bailing out the banks but that money isn't coming back. >> they portrayed them as pigs and sharks. >> it's fabricating.

his father. >> it all raises a question, can successful politicians relate to the pain of the unemployed. >> some of these republican candidates are not using common touch right now. you are seeing the reactions of it and some people that say, these guys just don't get it. >> i'm proud. >> rick perry was raised in a farmhouse that didn't have running water. he is now worth at least a million dollars. herman cain is worth $3-6 million and been blunt with those without a job? >> don't blame wall street and don't blame the big banks. if you don't have a job. >> mitt romney has also had his moments. it's a fine line, telling the story of the american dream when so many it's back nightmare.

michele bachmann is worth $1-3 million. >> i'm a tax lawyer and my husband started our own successful company. i get it with job creation. what people see in me is a real person. >> many in the republican base are big on self-reliance so candidates must show empathy to the unemployed. an oregon controversy is swirling after a mother and child were kicked off a bus last month. surveillance video shows the bus driver walking to the back of the bus and approaching a mom and her crying baby. driver tells the mom if she can't stop the baby from crying she has to get off the bus. at the next stop, all the passengers got off in protest. after an investigation the driver has been disciplined. >> what is discipline? >> that is privileged

welcome back. time right now, 9:40. a live look from roof cam showing you all the embarcadero. looks cloudy and gray out there. i don't know if it's going to stay that way. i guess i need to pay closer attention to lisa's forecast. >> we're going to brighten up there. upper 60s and few showers earlier this morning. mostly out of the woods right now but as we head outside, in the city, more gray for you. so we are looking at probably

another couple of hours before it clears here downtown. numbers are going to respond. we'll see more 60s and 70s with all the cloud cover. we haven't been allowed to drop too much overnight. as a result, mid-60s. here we sit in mountain view, 66 in oakland, 63 in napa. 64 half moon bay. we've got a ridge of high pressure a weak one that will scour out the cloudiness. showers is still possible. more showers this morning that was anticipated but they've since quieted down. temperatures will climb back up by as much as five degrees tomorrow. by the afternoon we'll look for the 60s and 70s to return today. and patch of information south of half moon bay. but overall the temperatures continue on their downward trend today, but we will look for a slight bump up in the numbers at some time.

here the weak disturbance that moved through the area at 4:00 this morning. showers a couple hundredths picked up in the oakland and north bay. we are looking at the next system to be the mid-week weather make they're will cool us down further on tuesday and wednesday. for now, afternoon sunshine and look for numbers right around normal, 60s and 70s. very comfortable afternoon. in fact, the next seven days looking pretty good, as well. if you are heading out of town, we have the warmer weather in the sacramento to san joaquin valley. upper 70s in los angeles and back home, upper 70s around los gatos, 75 in saratoga, as well as san jose, we're talking 73 as you head toward menlo park. low to mid-60s with the southwesterly flow. onshore flow shouldn't be as gusty as what we saw yesterday. 68 in downtown san francisco.

got that low offshore. once that moves on through. we'll see the cooler conditions. out ahead of system, mid-70s to look forward in santa rosa. 78 in calistoga. near east bay, 69 in berkeley and see the sunshine by late morning in san leandro. 71 there. upper 70s for you. 80 in livermore and we'll look at the clouds breaking off by about 11:00 around the boardwalk 68 in monterey. so today, a little cooling and we'll look for the numbers to come up tomorrow. then tuesday and wednesday, extra cloud cover, still looking dry and warming up and nice by the end of the workweek. >> those 80s above normal? >> a little above normal. we should be in the upper 70s for this time of the year. >> construction of a 600 megawatt power plant in hayward is finally under way after ten

years of wrangling and red tape. russell city energy center is being built in the industrial district near the san mateo bridge but jonathan bloom reports not everyone is happy about it. >> in less than two years, this lab power plant, but right now it's awfully quiet because most of the workers aren't here. this marks ten years of negotiating. it started during the rolling blockouts of the energy crisis. it met with resistance. >> it's couple blocks from single family homes, apartments, it's just not the right spot for this power plant. >> ultimately they found a new spot and started the process again and now it's nearly complete. >> the new plant is replacing older dirtier plants that have shut down in san francisco.

it will still burn fossil fuel but 40% less of it. >> we have a plant, i think the only one in the country that has greenhouse gas regulations. >> that is little comfort to the nearby construction that wants to stop the construction. it's in a minority as city leaders insist the plant is the right move for hayward and not just because of ten millions dollars the owners have donated for a new public library. building the plant has created 300 construction jobs. >> the number one complaint people have to our city council we're not doing enough to get them jobs. >> for 300 construction jobs are expected to last around may 2013 when the plant starts producing. the plant will produce 35 permanent jobs. a government study says by the middle of this century, 65%
