occupy groups across the bay area hit their streets and stand their ground, defie defying pole orders to stop camping out. plan to buy yahoo may be in the works. the news starts now. this is abc 7 news. >> good afternoon. gun rights supporters made a dramatic statement in the east bay today to protest a new state law. more than two dozen people went to a shopping mall with rifles and shotguns strapped to their shoulders. we're live in the newsroom with the reason for this. john? >> reporter: dan, it was a big attention grab ber, about 30 heavheavily armed protesters inl view of anyone who happened to be driving by. they're upset about a new state law that will prohibit them from openly carrying hand guns in public. they came with plenty of firepower to make their point. hand guns, rifles, shotguns, and

other weapons. demonstrators say the guns were unloaded, making it all perfectly legal. >> i'm trying to protect my family and the second amendment said i can do that. >> reporter: for an hour this afternoon, more than two dozen gun rights advocates geaghted in front of a mall. he heard from supporters who honked their horns and others who didn't like what they saw. >> i've got my kids in the car. i don't need them seeing guns like that. >> reporter: the group, calling it the responsible citizens of california, protested a new law signed by governor brown. beginning january 1st it will no longer be legal to openly carry an unloaded hand gun, but it will still be legally to openly carry unloaded long guns like shotguns and rifles. >> this is a direct reaction to what our government officials in sacramento have done to us. we're not out here trying to intimidate anybody or anything like that. we're saying our government is making life difficult for us. we'll stay within the law. >> i will not be carrying but i have a long gun at home, a smith

and wes son .40 caliber car bien because we're allowed to do that. >> i think it's a little scary. when you go out in public, going to public places like starbuck's, even to a 24 here, you don't want anybody carrying a gun, whether you think it's loaded or not. >> any time you see people in a suburban environment with a bunch of guns, i think it's kind of scary. >> reporter: after it was over, demonstrators walked across the street and piled into a kfc restaurant where they grabbed a drink and a bite to eat with weapons exposed for everyone to see. there was a similar demonstration in san diego today. police in san le an droa quietly watched the event from a distance. when the law goes into event, openly carrying a hand gun would be a misdemeanor. >> a woman who tried to help

after a car crash on interstate 880 died after being hit by another vehicle. the initial crash happened just after 2 this morning in hayward. the c hp said it was minor and no one was hurt. good samaritans stopped on the freeway to help and a car came and slammed into theirs, killing a 20-year-old. >> the best thing you can do is pull pul over, call for help. definitely don't stop in the lane and put yourself at risk. leave that to us. >> the other victims were taken to eden medical center and children's hospital. no further information about them is being released at this time. demonstrators demanding a change to economic policies took to the streets today across the bay area. >> in oakland, roughly thousand people took part in today's occupy rally. hundreds of protesters are still camping at a plaza outside city

hall despite a city order to leave the site by 10 last night. police issued a notice to vacant but did not -- to vacate but did not forcibly clear the crowd. in san jose at 4:30 this morning police arrested two protesters and cited a third for illegal camping at city hall. they insist the arrest were warranted because of health, safety, and as an tea sanitary . more arrest for camping are very more likely, according to a source. others concerned about their financial present and future went to college for free advice. the event was the second annual certified financial planning day at uc hastings in san francisco. if features free one on ones with credit counselors. >> in many cases it's getting worse and worse. that's why we see demonstrations happening in the streets. we see problems. we hear about problems in neighborhoods, in families, in schools, in companies.

it's everywhere. we want to help people have a chance to be successful. the one thing we can do to do that is better and more information. >> budgeting, debt management as well as how to pay for college wilwere also covered in today'st together. google is exploring the possibility of helping to finance a possible deal by other companies to acquire yahoo. google has talked to at least two private equity firms, according to today's "wall street journal", about potentially assisting them to finance a deal to buyi yahoo's core business. the journal reports google and prospective partners have had early stage discussions but haven't put together a formal proposal. no comment on the report from google or yahoo. a major announcement out of libya sets the time table for elections. tomorrow more than two months after revolutionary forces swept into the capitol, the country's leaders declare rib raition.

there was a 2007 fire in malibu that destroyed 14 structures. those named in friday's filing by the consumer protection and safety division include southern california edison and four cell phone companies who are accused of overloading power poles with wires and equipment, causing them to be toppled by winds in malibu canyon and sparking the fire. a spoke person for edison said the utility believes the penalties are not supported by evidence and are excessive. 20 years ago this week a firestorm ravaged the oakland hills. 25 people died from the flames. 150 more were injured. over 3300 homes were destroyed. the loss has been estimated at one and a half billion dollars. firefighters had problems from the start start. >> we've got equipment that doesn't hook up. we can't talk to one another, and you know, they've had no training and no experience in being able to fight these kinds of fires. >> mayor bates spoke today at the formal ceremony co member

commemorating the fire storm. he and other state legislators passed a bill establishing one fire unit for the oklahoma lapped hills area in hopes that such a disaster will never happen again. to see that area today, you would never know what happened there. wayne friedman knows because he covered the disaster. >> reporter: 20 years ago this was a symbolic photograph. the doorway to nowhere, although for this man it became more of a portal. >> it turned out the doorway to the future. >> reporter: he said that while remembering an east bay nightmare, the day when as a firefighter he saved multiple homes, only to learn that his own had burned. >> i might have tried to do something. i don't know. i don't know. we were already committed to where we were. >> reporter: they were committed all right. from the beginning we sensed it would be a different. the east bay hills were on fire. >> i knew that day that it was

you're watching abc 7 news. right now in stockton reports say police have surrounded a house where the suspect in last month's hels angels funeral shooting is believed stand inside. this is patient of steve ruiz and his girlfriend. he's a suspect. homicide investigators say the girlfriend's life may be in danger. a week ago a fight broke out over a hells angel who was killed in a shootout. police believe ruiz shot and killed another member of the club. police in palo alto are

lookinasking for help. police say a woman was walking home with a friend on ra mona street thursday when the man flashed a gun and demanded the woman's purse. the robber got away in a light-colored late 1980s or early '90s chevy two-door sedan. no one was hurt during the robbery. police ask anyone with information about it to give them a call. a former employee at a hospital in burlingame faces charges in connection with theft of patient records. the documents were allegedly took from the medical center between november 2009 and september 2010. according to prosecutors, the woman told investigators she was overwhelmed by sorting them at work and brought them home to shred later. hospital officials have said most of the records contain patient name and test results. none of the information was apparently miss used.

some breaking news now. the cmp tells abc 7 says a crash between a small bus or van and a motorcycle has closed down all eastbound lanes of highway 580 at 150th street in accuracy trcastrovalley. there's an injury to the cyclist. the lanes will likely be closed for the next half hour. if you plan to use that stretch of 580, you're advised to find another route. researchers with the california academy of scientists in san francisco are just back from a grand adventure. they spent several weeks in the filphilippines looking for and finding hundreds of creatures no one has discovered before. abc 7 was there. dan ashley has more on the part of the trip. bug patrol. >> charles is a real life spider man, an expert on arack nid behavior, evolution, and webs.
