good evening everyone. i'm alan wang. a major earthquake in turkey, and rescue operations continue tonight after the country's most powerful earthquake in more than a deck okay. at least 138 people are dead. the 7.2 magnitude quake shook the eastern part of the country. seven aftershocks have been felt, one measuring 6.0. here's the latest. >> reporter: here's the full force of the earthquake's violence. wrecking this room. rocking the walls. toppling furniture.

outside, as the quake shook buildings, tens of thousands of panicked residents fled into the streets. dozens of buildings were knocked down into piles of rubble. no one knows yet how many are trapped in the ruins. still reeling from the shock. residents began frantic rescue efforts. some used bare hands to reach survivors. eye witnesses said screams for help were coming from beneath the piles of wreckage. this woman was rescued, the pain on her face, ang -- there was a lot of shaking, said this man. i have relatives here. i pray to god they will couple -- come out alive and well, this man said they'd been to several hospitals but hadn't found the friend. frequent aftershocks disrupted rescue efforts. turkey is one of the world's

most active seismic zones. hundreds are hospitalized, and medical supplies are-under generally needed. by night fall, power saws were brought in to cut through the debris. darkness brought now difficulties. >> alan: the president pers me has called turkey's pret offering aide and assistance. president obama expressed his condolences saying, quote, we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our turkish ally and are ready to assist the turkish authority. >> right now a rescue effort is underway off san francisco's pier 80. the court says two kayakers were caught in the wake of a tugboat and one was swept under the

pier. divers are searching the area. it's not known if he was wearing a life jacket. we'll have the latest at 6:00. a san jose police officer shot a map today at an extended stay hotel. that makes seven officer-involved shootings by san jose police officers this year. it is at many as in the past two years combined. here's the story behind the latest shooting. i understand the police out there are being very tight-lipped. >> reporter: we're nine hours into this investigation, and they're still not releasing many details in this latest officer involved shooting other than they were called to this extended stay hotel this morning following reports of a suspicious man with a weapon, and within minutes of the officers arriving, that map was -- man was shot. >> just before 8:00 a.m., police were called to this east san jose extended stay hotel, following reports a suspicious man had a weapon.

according to police, when they arrived, they found the man within the hotel but not inside one of the rooms. he looked as if he might have been passed out. >> eventually he actually came to. officers began to give him command. at that point the suspect grabbed a weapon and displayed some type of behavior that the officers took at a threat, and they fired in self-defense, hitting him. >> the man was not killed and was taken to a local hospital. beyond that officers are not releasing details, like what kind of weapon he may have had. the actions and whether he is even a guest. other guests could not add much further information. >> just a big voice. so after minutes, lots of police coming into here. >> he says he heard big voices, yelling, and then police arrived

five or six minutes later. this officer-involved shooting is the seventh for san jose police this year. the most recent involved three officers and a reserve officer at an incident on wasser avenue. the suspect in that case was killed by police gunfire. >> we know that both the sheriff's office and our department has actually been involved in officer-involved shootings. the fact it's not one agency, we're starting to see an increase in violence towards police officers. >> none of the officers involved in today's shooting were injured. both of the officers are on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol as investigators continue in this officer-involved shooting. reporting live in san jose, abc-7 news. >> alan: road rage may head led to a deadly crash that shut down eastbound interstate 58 a

yesterday. the chp believes the drive of a paratransit van, name eddie hall, intentionally struck a motorcyclist and dragged the motorcycle several miles under the vietnam. officers say the motorcyclist was with a group believed to the hells angels and had some type of freeway confrontation with hall. >> sounds like the van was moving over to get into a lane that maybe the motorcycle was in. i don't know if there was any communication between the two. that's unknown at this point. and then suddenly the van turned and hit the motorcycle. >> alan: police say hall tried to run away from the scene but he was caught and arrested. a hells angels motorcycle club member wanted in the fatal shooting of a fellow member is still on the run tonight. he is still -- officers said he was stopped but after a search,

he was nowhere the sight. police believe ruiz is armed and dangerous. >> also in san jose, an apartment fire has about 50 people looking for a new place to live. firefighters rescued six people from a fire that damaged a 20-unit complex on bolling green drive. it happened just after one this morning. no one was hurt. >> so much smoke and flame they could barely get in to attack the fire, and people are trying to get a rescue, trying to see up on the balcony, and within the apartment complex. >> alan: the red cross has been helping the victims find new homes. and so far there's no word on how that fire started. hundreds of bay area interfaith clergy and religious leaders are expected to join the ""occupy" sf" movement tomorrow. they will take part in a march

jobs was so angry when he heard about google's free android software, he permanently went to the company's headquarters to stop the project. he promised to use all of apple's tax reserves to destroy android because it was stolen property. android phones are now a cheap threat to apple's iphone. jobs lost this battle with cancer this month. >> scientist believe a defunction research satellite crashed into earth somewhere in southeast asia. most of the satellite was expected to burn up once it hit the atmosphere but 1.8 tons could have survived in pieces and struck the earth. scientist believe they would have received reports by now if the fragments landed in a populated area so they think the debris fell in the ocean. nasa says it has no more large satellites that will fall back

to earth, at least in the next 25 years. leigh is here. you say changes? >> leigh: a yo-yo forecast. going to be slightly cooler and then warm up. outside we go right now. from our high definition sutro cam. a few high clouds there. and we do have some fog that is starting to move from south to north and should be here overnight tonight. but it has been just a spectacular weekend, hasn't it? warm temperatures, still warm right now. here's a look at current readings as the offshore winds are still with us. 84 in napa. livermore, 80 in san francisco. even the coast enjoying temperatures mild for this time of year with half moon bay, 73 degrees. here's a look at the highlights. the fog will return near the coast overnight. slightly cooler as those onshore winds return for our monday. and then offshore winds will redevelop as we head into

tuesday and wednesday, and that's going to mean an increase in fire danger across the entire bay area. you can see on the satellite, clear sky, but you can get a sense of the fog slowly moving north. should be around monterey bay this evening, and the entire bay area tomorrow morning, the coast and the bay by tomorrow morning. you can see the timing. for 5:00 a.m., the fogger near e golden gate bridge. napa, santa rose rosa, temperatures overnight, 40s, elsewhere, mid-to-upper 50s across the bay area. the warmup this weekend thanks to the trough of low pressure sitting off the coast. in the evening it's going to push east and that's going to allow a wind shift to more onshore, so a cooler wind direction. the fog returns on monday. then as we get into tuesday, that system moves up, high

pressure will rebuild and that's going to bring us day offshore winds. so we look for temperatures to warm up again, tuesday and wednesday. tuesday night, early wednesday morning, the highest potential for fire weather watch, especially in the east bay hills, the higher elevations, and the winds will start to pick up at that point. here's a look at the highs for monday. 77 for san jose. 76 for cupertino. all going to come down a few degrees. 75 for redwood city. san francisco tomorrow, you'll cool down to 70 degrees. morning overcast. and january clearing, 74 for petaluma. oakland, 74. 76 for fremont. interior east bay, mild temperatures. antioch, 80. concord, 77. look for santa cruz tomorrow, 68. the seven-day forecast. monday, a little cooler, offshore winds pick up tuesday night, wednesday, and then after that, we look for increasing
