parts of the bay area. lee will lets know if the entire weekend will be a washout. abc 7 news starts now. good afternoon. thank you so much for joining us. bank customers say they're fighting back today as part of a national day of action. they're taking their money out of big banks like chase, b of a, and wells fargo in search of cheaper banking options. we're live at herman plaza. he has the story now. >> reporter: this protest had no yelling or showght or marching, just people quietly pulling their money out of large corporate banks and opening accounts in smaller institutions. people like peter gable of san francisco who says he's among those who want justice. >> who want the large corporate institutions to hear that and to change their policies, to stop paying themselves very large bonuses and to act like small community banks that reinvest in their own local neighborhoods.

>> reporter: he was not alone at the circle bank where others set up new accounts. >> i switched my money from a big bank to here because we have to get back to -- when i grew up in the '50s, everyone trusted each other. >> reporter: using the lure of home made cookies and consumer angers, thang,anger, they signe2 customers this afternoon. >> our offices are n not open saturdays traditionally. we want to open our doors to the community and the needs of the banking community. >> reporter: the move your money protest spilled in front of the chase bank inua in walnut creek. >> why am i out here? because a small group of people seized control of the country and are running it into the ground. >> reporter: the credit union national association said more than 600,000 consumers nationwide have moved their money from big banks to credit

unions over the past month. protesters sally reed said she doesn't have the credit rating or money to open a new account. >> because i lot of my job, then i lot o lost my savings. then i lost my home. i probably just don't qualify. >> wells fargo was also the target of another protest, this one in oakland. the immigrant rights group proatd the bank, saying it invested in immigrant detention centers. the group chained themselves together and tried to block the doors of the bank at 12th and broadway but the bank closed shortly after the protesters arrived. wells fargo didn't respond to our request for comment. sa san francisco neighborhod has the highest number of foreclosures in the city and residents put the pressure on the five banks that serve them

today. between 2008 and next year, nearly 2000 homes and home owners are projected to lose their homes. the neighbors are demanding affordable alone modifications and principal reductions or else they say they'll take their money out of the banks. >> the banks should sit down with us and say okay, this is how much you can pay, and this is what you can afford and try to work with us instead of saying you know what? you don't qualify, you're done. get out of here. >> the estimated loss in home values in the excelsior is a staggering $1 billion. a teenage girl was shot dead last night and three friends were shot. neighbors are afraid for their lives. we're live at the morgan hill police department with more on the unnerving details. >> reporter: even detectives here are troubled by this. they say the four teenagers were innocent bystanders, simply hanging out on a friday night when they were shot.

a small memorial is set up at the apartments in honor yofer 4f 14-year-old girl who was shot to death while hanging out with friends on grassy hill side. three other teenagers with romero was shot. one remains in a medically induced coma. >> we don't believe they targeted those four specifically. they just came by and just randomly shot using a rifle. >> reporter: morgan hill police believe the shootings were gang related. they say last night a car full of gang members drove up cosmo avenue. when they reached del monte, they started firing at the four teenager who just left a birthday party at the apartment complex. police found the suspects, four adults and a 17-year-old, less than a mile from the crime scene, hiding in another apartment complex. this witness did not want to be identified.

>she said i'm afraid for my family, for everyone who lives here. these were just children and they were shot. i'm very upset. police do say that homicides are fairly rare in this city. in fact, the last one was in 2009, and tha that one was also gang-related. live in morgan hill tonight, abc 7 news. all right. three men are in the hospital after being gunned down last night in san francisco's mission district. police say the triple shooting happened around 11 last night at 16t16th and hof street. two of the victims suffered life threatening injuries and san francisco detectives are still looking for the suspect. did you feel the earthquake? >> i didn't. apparently it wasn't very big. the usds said we had a magnitude 3.2 earthquake at about 2:52 this afternoon. >> it was centered in the east bay most likely along the hayward fault. >> bart said it caused system wide delays of about 15 minutes.

let's take a look at your weather. looks like we've got rain falling, lee. >> we certainly do. we have a slow moving cold front now up along the north coast, already starting to advance toward the bay area. i'll get out of the way so you can get a wide perspective from wide doppler 7hd. you can see the moisture moving toward the bay area, mainly north of the golden gate bridge. we'll take you to the north bay where they've been having some spotty showers all day long. some of the the light blew here is what we call verga, moisture out there vap rating before it reaches the ground. nonetheless, we're picking up nice echoes, petaluma picking up light rain towards fairfax, even richmond right now reporting a bit of rain. the frontal system still up along the north coast. you can see it advancing from yellow spots denoting moderate rainfall. all of this moves across the bay area overnight tonight. we'll look at the accu weather 7-day forecast coming up in a bit.

an investigation is underway to figure out the cause of a fuel leak on a school bus that was carrying dozens of redwood city students. at least 11 people were taken to the hospital last night complaining of skin irritation and difficulty breathing. 38 students and chaperones were coming back from a field trip at about 7:30 last night when fuel began seeping through the floor boards. the fumes were so bad the driver had to pull off of i-680 in pleasant hill and call police after everyone evacuated. crews are examining a small leak in an underground pipeline on the south side of stanford university. this is the same transmission line that exploded in last year's deadly san bruno disaster. pg and e crews were conducting a safety test in o the area when they discovered the leak. the company says there are no safety issue because natural gas is not running through the pipeline. up next, remembering a man who became a household name.

>> closed captioning brought to oakland police say they're investigating the possibility of excessive force that apparently put an occupy protester in the hospital. 32-year-old is at highland hospital in fair condition. his sister said he has a lacerate spleen and internal bleeding. records show he was booked early thursday morning on suspicion of resisting arrest during the occupy oakland demonstration. the iraqi war vet was 1 of 103

life in tv began when a few minutes with andy rooney became a national sensation. >> why is it we always look forward to the mail coming every day. >> reporter: so famous, he was a fixture on saturday night live. >> and then there's andy rooney. i received about 100 of these letters every single day. i never open them. i don't like opening them. i set fire to them. >> reporter: rooney's bluntness got him in trouble over the years. he was suspended for three months in 1990 for remarks he made about homosexuals and african americans. the ratings plummeted during his absence and he soon returned as a sunday night staple. just three weeks ago andy rooney signed off for the last time after 33 years. >> all this time i've been paid to say what is on my mind on television. you don't get any luckier in life than that. >> reporter: we were lucky to listen to him. andy rooney was 92 years old.

well, in the presidential race, the issue of sexual harassment will be off the table at tonight's debate in houston. republican presidential candidate herman cain has been dogged by accusations of sexual harassment, but a new abc poll shows the issue is not hurting him right now. more than half of republicans surveyed say they don't see the accusations as a big deal, but it's not going away. an attorney for one of cain's female accusers says he's not buying the businessman's denial of the details. >> mr. cain knows the specific incidents that were alleged, and if he chooses to not remember or not acknowledge those, that's his issue. >> the accusations came in the 90s during cain's tenure as president of the national restaurant association. tonight's tea party debate in houston features just cain and newt gingrich. all right. lee is here checking our weather and the rain is already here. >> yeah, it's here, especially north of the golden gate bridge. i'll show you a live look outside now. you can see that the gray slate is above the clouds, continuing to thicken up and raindrops are

falling, thanks to live doppler 7hd picking up the echoes. you can see much of this is from the golden gate bridge northward but it's definitely sweeping in and will continue to do so overnight. petaluma in the last 15 minutes reporting light rain. this band of showers moving in from north to south, so richmond, concord, also alamo and walnut creek, brentwood you'll see the rain as it makes its way in the next few hours. along the north coast are some heavy cells, and you can see some of the darker greens there indicating some moderate rain, even some snow in the higher elevations starting to move in as well. we do have a weather advisory in effect for the lake tahoe area for snow overnight tonight. we'll get to that in just a moment. current readings. it's been a cool day in the mid to upper 50s. mountain view, you're at 60. 666 in san francisco.

here's look at some of our highlights. here's where the rain will spread from north to south overnight. we'll probably see a few ling lingering showers tomorrow morning. if you're going to the ball game, you'll be fine tomorrow. don't forget before you go to bed tonight, it's time to change those clocks. they go back one hour at 2 a.m. tomorrow, but do it tonight before you go to bed. all right. satellite radar composite. you can clearly see the cold front right here, and this is what's going to be moving in across the bay area overnight tonight. this low helps to bring us the cold temperatures overnight last night, but the cold front will start to sag in our direction. that will definitely spread the rain overnight tonight. here's a look at our timing. beginning at 4:00 this afternoon, you can most of the heaviest rain, at 7:00 is when we'll start to pick up moderate rain in the north bay. by 10:00 it spreads to the east and south bay locations. 3:00 tomorrow morning, folks, it's out of here.

we'll see a few lingering showers early tomorrow morning, but by tomorrow afternoon we'll bring on the sunshine as the system moves on toward the east and south of the bay area. there's a winter weather advisory up for the sierras until 10 a.m. tomorrow. possibly a foot of snow above the 7,000 foot level. 4 to 6 inches above the 5,000 foot level. obviously chain controls a possibility, travel delays as well. keep that in mind if you're heading to the high country tonight or early tomorrow morning. here's a look at our lows. the cloud cover not as cold, although we'll dip down into the mid to upper 30s in the north bay. the rest of us in the 40s. highs for sunday with the sunshine coming out generally mid to upper 50s across the board. antioch may top out at 61 degrees. we're looking for 59 as well as afternoon sunshine for gill roy. pleasant conditions on monday. don't forget the clock change. tomorrow morning, 2 a.m. we go back. election day tuesday looks dry

today was a day of action called national transfer idea. the idea was for customers to take money out of big banks like chase and wells fargo and put them in smart community banks or credit unions. wells fargo did not give any on camera interviews today. the company said it paid back its $25 billion plus another billion and a half dollars. the bank said they've modified hundreds of thousands of loans. a former penn state football coach is out of jail on $100,000

bail after being charged with sexually abusing eighth young men. jerry sandusky was arraigned today. prosecutors said he met all of his victims through an organization for at risk youth that he founded. penn state's athletic director and another top school emergency administrator face charges for failing to report charges, but coach joe paterno was not charged. when he learned of a report of abuse, he immediately reported it to school officials. the world is watching as greece and italy fight to stabilize their governments and their financial futures. failure would have a disaster ds affect on the global economy. >> reporter: greece's prime minister narrowly survived a confidence vote, significant analogy to the world that greece was ready to accept the deal. earlier in the week prime minister george papandreou called for national referendum

on the deal that european leaders already worked out. that enraged many leaders and they reportedly voiced their objections to him directly during the g-20 summit in france this week. last night during a joint interview on french television with president obama, president sarkozy of france denied arm twisting the greek prime minister said greece's acceptance of the deal was vital to stabilizing the world's economy. should greece default, the european debt crisis could spread to larger econ mees like italy where on saturday thousands protested the economic policies of the prime minister. this administrator said he's ashamed of how other countries see italy and says the prime minister must go away. the political crisis is still unresolved in grease. prime minister papandreou has offered to form a new coalition government to see the debt deal through, and even step down if

necessary, but saturday night in a televised address, his political opponent snubbed his offer of a coalition and renewed calls for his resignation. at least from the view outside of greece, bankruptcy has been avoided, for now. simon mcgregor with abc news in london. now for americans without jobs, the global economy is the least of their worries. congress is expected to decide soon whether to continue to provide unemployment checks for up to 99 weeks in the hardest hit states. last year 75% of people without jobs were getting unemployment checks. this year, just 48% are getting checks. of america's 14 million unemployed, nearly a third of them have been without work for over a year. more than three million people were kept out of poverty last year because of unemployment benefits. many of the unemployed, however, have been without work for more than 99 weeks. you've heard a thousand times that the state is strapped

for cash. while that may be true, there's a lot of money sitting in sacramento. nearly $200 million in federal stimulus money. it's a use it or lose it situation. >> reporter: part of california's federal stimulus money was supposed to help the state's energy sector by boosting renewable energy and weatherizing the homes of low income families. by increasing demand, lots of jobs would be created, but two and a half years later a stunning revelation at a capital hearing, about $131 million has not been spent on improving energy efficiency. another $twelt 1 millio $21 mils languishing for weatherization. if not spent by next spring, the feds want the money back. >> to not have spent the money or have the money spent quickly is absolutely unacceptable and is offensive to the 12% of

californiaanccalifornians who a. >> there's a bunch of people that could have been put to work with all this money during this time. >> agreed. we certainly shouldn't have gotten it out sooner. it's a burdensome task placed on the energy commission from the get go. >> reporter: the california department of education led about -- let about a million dollars in stimulus money lapse last year for the child nutrition program. it would be frustrating for job seekers to see the same happen to the energy fund. >> i really have to find me a job right now. that makes me angry that they are sitting on this money. >> reporter: department heads promise to spend all the money in less than five months to meet the deadline. in previous reports on other departments, the state auditor said the risk of spending so much money so fast could result in the federal funds being spent improperly or illegally. for now, if the money does get spent, there could be a small hiring boom in the next few weeks. in sacramento, abc 7 news.

wrong thing. how about a sports star who not only did the right thing but sacrificed a championship in the process. here's the story. >> reporter: professional surfer kelly slater knows what it's like to party on the beach, and wednesday in san francisco, slater had seemingly done it again, winning an unprecedented 11th world championship. >> i don't really know what i can say. it hasn't all sunk in yet. >> reporter: only it turns out he hadn't won. a mat mathematical error while calculating season point totals meant slater shouldn't have been carried off the beach, sprayed champagne, or hoisted this trophy. a monumental mix up, you bet, but also a tale of genuine sportsmanship. you see, it was slater himself who called foul. after reading a comment posted under an on line account of his victory, the 39-year-old realized he hadn't qualified for

>> i don't know. three days to adjust to it? >> one morning. >> i know. we're going to have to deal with the rain as well this evening. let's go ahead and take a look outside. you can see the clouds really starting to gather. this is from our high definition camera. you can see those bands o of was making their way through the avenues in san francisco. live doppler 7hd already picking up that band right here as it's starting to move inland. let's go ahead and look at the north bay. just in the last few, i'd say five minutes or so. lucas valley road getting hit with moderate rain. you can see the dark greens that just made its way from west to east now heading over towards the napa area. even in the east bay now, american canon seeing the rain starting to move in your direction. i'll put this into motion. you can see the trajectory of this and also the movement of the rain. generally from northwest to southeast, so concord, also

pittsburgh, oakland and brentwood, you'll see some of that moderate to light rain moving into your neighborhood i suspect in the next 10 to 15 minutes. we're showing you a bit of yellow here with a pocket of heavy rain now making its way through that area. also heading down toward san jose, so definitely we will see that rain spread from north to south throughout the course of the evening. temperatures right now generally in the mid to upper 50s across much of the bay area and our highlights suggest that the rain will be with us overnight tonight. we'll deal with a few morning showers. after that, look for afternoon clearing. if you have any outdoor activities, heading to the ball game tomorrow afternoon, i think we will start to dry out then and as we just told you or reminded you, the clocks go back before you go to sleep tonight. here's the cold front up along the north coast. the low pressure center is right here, counter clockwise spin. it stays to the north of us. you can see the band of rain that will make its way across the bay area.
