>> alan: a major traffic snarl on interstate 2 # 0 in woodside. authorities are confirming an explosion caused by gasline test by pg&e crews. >> we're live near the scene. what's going on out there right now? >> reporter: there's a lot of cleanup going on. behind me there's a lot of traffic coming up highway 280. the chp had all four lanes closed because of the water and mud on the freeway. three lanes are now open so traffic is flowing, but rather slowly. we're here with -- it's a pg&e

issue. >> earlier this afternoon they're were testing a line, using water pressure to test it. we received a call of a large plume of smoke and debris in the area so we initially responded, believing it was possibly a hazardous materials incident. fortunately the vapor was not hazardous but caused debris to fall on the freeway. so we had four lanes closed for 30 minutes but we still have a lane closed, and pg&e is working quickly so we can have the entire freeway open here. >> reporter: we heard residents calling abc-7 complaining of an explosion. >> i did not hear the explosion. i was not in the area when it took place. however if you look at the side of the kill, there is a significant amount of erosion, and voice there was lot of pressure in the line.

>> pg&e is working? >> they work with us to assess the situation to determine it was hazardous as far as the vapor from the line, and everyone had a concern of public safety and making sure the roadway was clear of debris. >> reporter: thank you very much. again, chp is actually asking people not to take highway 280. take 101 so they won't be backed up like this. pg&e crews are on scene. we're going to have more information on abc-7 news at 6:00. reporting live in woodside, abc-7 news. >> alan: caught on video during last wednesday's "occupy" oakland demonstration, and the protester who was run over by a driver during a heated exchange is speaking out. senior joe is live in oakland. >> reporter: along with the video there were dozens of witnesses who saw the car hit those two marchers, and today one of the marchers is asking

questions. he wants to know why the driver of that car was not arrested. lance is still wearing hospital bracelets and now uses a cane after being hit bay car during wednesday's march and general strike in oakland. he said he and his friend were crossing the street with other marchers when the driver of a silver mercedes nudged them. >> everyone is walking but you can't let us by? and that's when i was knocked down. >> reporter: you can see in the video, he bangs on the hood of the car, and then the car jolts forward. >> i have lacerated kidney, and they have me under observation for about 30 hours. >> reporter: he and his friend were both injured. he says her ankle was crushed by the car. the driver of the mercedes was not arrested, and it's not clear if he was even cryinged. police who responded to the incident let the man drive off

against the calls of an irate group of onlookers who demanded he be taken in custody. the park police have turned over all information to the oakland police, who are handling the case because it's in their jurisdiction. a spokesperson for the oakland police tells us she does not know if the driver was cited by b.a.r.t. police but oakland police could issue charges. it's common a citation can be issued after an incident and following thorough investigation. the victim wants answers. >> it was assault with a deadly weapon, and he tried to damn near kill us. no matter -- you don't resolve issues by hitting someone with your car. >> reporter: and a spokesperson for oakland police tells us they're very appreciative to b.a.r.t. police for responding to the the incident because the

police had their hand full when this incident health meanwhile, b.a.r.t. police have since received a citizen's complaint and an independent police audit for is investigating their handling of this incident. reporting live in oakland, abc-7 news. >> no charges have been filed in the death of a teenage girl who died last night after being hit by two cars in san jose. she was working near pearl avenue when she was struck. both drivers stayed the scene and are cooperating with officers. there's no evidence that drugs or alcohol were involved. >> alan: the storied penn state university football program is marred in controversy after a former football coach was arrested for molesting eight boys allegedly. here's what joe paterno knew about his fellow coach and when he knew it. >> he was a revered architect of a defensive legacy, second to

none in college football. >> if you or two say, give me squeaky clean in college football, one of the answer you might say first is penn state. >> which makes the allegations against jerry sandusky that much more shocking. prosecutors said he used his position to lure young boys into situations where he sexually assaulted them. eight of them. >> this is absolutely a stunner in the world of sports. >> reporter: although rehe retired from coaching in 1999, he had an office on campus and an active presence in the community with a foundation he established for at-riecks boys. it was through his work with youngsters he found his victims. >> children who are troubled or a disadvantaged background they're more vulnerable. >> one of those victims, 11 or 12 years old, reported physical contact to his mother, setting off a state investigation. that was in 2009. seven years earlier in 2002, graduate assistant saw him

assaulting another young boy in the shower at the team's practice facility. he reported it to the head coach joe paterno, a legendary figure in college sports. paterno told school officials. what followed is as troubling to the penn state community as the alleged assaults two university administrators investigated and did. no furthermore, they tried to cover up the is dent. the athletic director tim curley and the university vice-president gary schultz are being charged with perjury and failure to alert police. lawyers for the men say they're clients are innocent and will fight the charges. the only consolation for the university, joe paterno is not implicated in any wrongdoing. >> you can see the interview of sandusky following the newscast. >> we have an update on our lead story. an explosion in a gas pipeline

triggered a mudslide that is blocking part of 280. here's a look at sky 7hd. you can see crews working in the area where that explosion was earlier. cal transcrews worked quickly to remove debris from the two left lanes. the woodside fire department says pg&e was testing the line by pumping water through it. the high water pressure caused the line to break, forcing water and mud into the lanes. they're working on getting that open as soon as possible. you can see there are some cars starting to get through but it's slow. if you can, use 101. >> alan: in afghanistan, the need for food and supplies continues, and today a special delivery from the bay area will be headed to the refugees there. volunteers from lafayette based trust in education, packed 20,000 bags of rice today to send to the needy in kabul. the nonprofit is partnering with stop hunger now, which donated the rice. but the -- by the end of the day

>> alan: more than a thousand people are strand the foothills of the tallest mountain in the world. the nepal army is moving tourists from mt. everest. for four days for visibility has cancelled flights at the airport, and travelers have been sleeping out there, and forecasters expect the fog and clouds to cover the region for a few more days. >> a major archaeological discovery has been made in monterey county. remains of the bones of a mammoth were found in a field near castroville. it's the first discovery of its kind in the county. the exact location isn't being released to discourage people from damaging the site. the remains of the large elephant were unearthed by earth moving equipment in december. it's believed the mammoth died 10,000 to 25,000 years ago. >> alan: coming up, california takes center stage at this year's national holiday celebration. >> it's huge. we're over the top excited about

>> we're keeping you update on breaking news. we're taking a look from sky 7hd. this is a live look. you can see crews out there. this is off of 280 northbound. woodside area. that's where pg&e was doing some hydrostatic testing through a pipeline, and the line burst, and debris has turned muddy, all on the freeway. you can see some lanes are getting through the area but it's moving slowly, so if you can avoid that, do that.
