making news in america this morning, scandal at penn state. >> overnight, top officials resign as part of the sex abuse case that has stunned the school and it's football program. new reaction from legendary coach joe paterno. seismic stunner. picking up the pieces from a rare earthquake. in oklahoma. and the fireworks fiasco, how did 20 minutes of fireworks detonate in just 60 seconds? all of it caught on tape. good morning, everybody. i'm rob nelson. >> and i'm sunny hostin. major developments overnight in the booming sex scandal that has rocked penn state university. and its famed football program. two top officials are stepping down tonight.

>> the campus is in part of state college known as happy valley. this morning, it's anything but. here's abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: a penn state gridiron legend faces 40 counts of child molestation. former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky is accused of molesting eight boys that were part of a foundation he created back in 1977. he declined comment. >> unfortunately, i'm not in a position i can make any statements. >> reporter: prosecutors say he used his position as a hero to the penn state community to prey on young boys over a 15-year period. >> it's scary. how know, i don't know what to say. as a mother, it's very upsetting. >> i'm blown away. completely. >> reporter: penn state's athletic director, tim curley and school administrator gary schultz stepped down late last night amid charges they covered

up sandusky's crime, even though they were aware of firsthand accounts. >> if these allegations are true, it goes to the top of the athletic department of penn state. one would think there would have to be some kind of house cleaning. >> reporter: the board of trustees held an emergency meeting yesterday. they did not discuss the possible resignation of joe paterno. he was told back in 2002 that sandusky was caught having sex with a 10-year-old boy in a penn state locker room shower. authorities say he reported the incident to administrators who failed to act. in a statement, coach joe paterno said he was shocked, surprised and saddened to hear about the situation. right now, no signs that he'll be forced to step down. >> no end in sight just yet. we'll continue to watch the story throughout the week. to politics now. a major challenge faced by mitt romney. an abc/"washington post" poll released overnight finds that one-third of republican voters think romney is the candidate

most likely to beat president obama. however, only 24% of those voters say they actually support romney. those results raise the request of whether or not romney is, in fact, electable. newt gingrich may benefit from mitt romney's problems. he's been inching up in the polls of late. gingrich and herman cain he would a one-on-one debate over the weekend. the sexual harassment allegations against cain never came up. after the debate, when a reporter tried to ask cain directly about the charges, this was the response -- >> don't even go there. >> can i ask my question? >> no. >> may i ask a good question? >> where is my chief of staff? please send him the journalistic code of ethics. >> on "meet the press" another republican candidate, former utah governor john huntsman called on cain to disclose all

information on the case. texas congressman ron paul was the people's choice. but anyone could cast a ballot in the unofficial poll, online or in person, by contributing $5 to the state republican party. now to oklahoma. a state more familiar with tornadoes than from what shook things up there this weekend. an earthquake that measured 5.6 struck on saturday. the worst the state's ever seen. abc's ryan owens has the story. >> reporter: in the middle of tornado alley, they're cleaning up from a different kind of natural disaster. >> all the cracks here in the driveway. >> reporter: one that buckled roads and rattled nerves. >> we literally grabbed the bed to stabilize ourselves. >> reporter: his chimney collapsed. during the 5.6 earthquake late saturday night. it was the strongest of a series of quake this is weekend on a known fault like. oklahoma actually has quite a bit of seismic activity. never this strong.

the epicenter was near the tiny town of sparks. population just more than 100. northeast of oklahoma city. but people felt it all across the country. >> we just had, i think, an earthquake. >> reporter: espn was on the air when the quake shook this college football stadium 50 miles from the epicenter. >> i literally thought the stadium was rocking, like people were stepping down off this platform i'm on. >> reporter: no one was hurt. but there was quite a bit of damage. >> we have a pretty good crack that goes all the way up. >> reporter: this quake shattered something else. the record books. why not? it's been that kind of year in oklahoma. 2011 broke the record here for the hottest summer, the coldest temperature, the most snowfall, the highest wind speed, the largest hail. and now the strongest earthquake in state history. ryan owens, abc news, dallas. nearly 100,000 people in connecticut are entering their second week without power and heat. many of them bunking at shelters

and hotels. the electric company hoped to restore power knocked out by that freak october storm to 99% of customers by last night. they say it probably won't happen now until wednesday. the mountains in san bernardino county are covered with several inches of fresh powder and resorts are predicting a good season. >> the people without power still a week later? in the cold weather like this? good luck to those folks. let's look at the weather from around the country on this monday morning. stormy in the southern plains. hail and winds from oklahoma city to laredo, texas. thunderstorms from kansas city to omaha, st. louis, and peoria. up to 10 inches of mountain snow in arizona, utah, and colorado. rain in the lower elevations. showers in the pacific northwest. >> 48 in seattle. 52 in portland. phoenix, only 63.

a record 48,438 people ran this year's new york city marathon. the first to cross the finish line was geoffrey mutai. of kenya. he shattered the record by more than 2 1/2 minutes. he had a time of 2:05:06. the second and third place finishes also beat the record. >> something in the water in kenya. they're impressive. now for a look at the road conditions on this monday. wet on i-10 from phoenix to el pa paso. flooding around midland and abilene. wet on i-5. >> if you're flying, airport delays possible in salt lake city, phoenix, denver, kansas city, and dallas. also this morning, a developing story from the roof of the world. hundreds of foreign tourists stranded near mt. everest. >> fog and clouds have forced the cancellation of flights from

the region's only airport last week. overnight, we learned that about 20 flights have taken off today. more are expected. one of the tourists said they were well taken care of during the week-long delay. that airport is one of the most dangerous in the world. and jurors deciding the fate of michael jackson's doctor will get back to work in los angeles this morning. they wrapped up the first day of deliberations on friday without asking any questions. so it's not clear what they have discussed so far. abc's jim avila has more on who is in the jury room. >> reporter: the jury is made up of seven men and five women. a near perfect reflection of los angeles. four of them say they're tv crime show watchers. they returned to the ninth floor and most observers expect a quick verdict, because there is only one count. juries historically do not like to convict doctors. some people believe on that aloerngs we could get an

acquittal or at least a hung jury. it does little good to try to guess when and what the jury will do. perhaps they'll have a verdict tomorrow. inside that jury room, there's a buzzer to communicate with the judge. it's two buzzes if they want a break to walk around or ask a question. the one we're listening for is three buzzes. if they buzz three times, they have a verdict. >> we'll be on verdict watch this week for sure. in other news this morning, a month after amanda knox and her former boyfriend were acquitted of murder by an italian court, raffaele sollecito gave an interview. on italian tv. he says their brief affair had just begun when knox's roommate was murdered. that kiss was his way of comforting her. when her clothes were seized as part of the investigation. he says he does not know if he'll ever visit knox in seattle. justin bieber has agreed to take a paternity test in two weeks when he returns to the u.s. a california woman claims he is the father of her 3-month-old son. appearing at the european mtv awards over the weekend, he
