hands. dad, i wish you were here. we love you. >> high emotions on the field and off. for the first time in 46 years, penn state plays without coach paterno at the helm. abc 7 news starts now. this is abc 7 news. good evening, everyone. thanks for joining us. an entire neighborhood in richmond had to be evacuated today after construction workers dug into a pg and e gas line they say they didn't even know was there. >> it happened this morning at south 47th street and wall avenue. crews were replacing a sewer line when they hit the gas pipe. we're live there with the latest on the situation. john? >> reporter: work has just wrapped up at the accident site a.at the height of this, about 5 homes in a one square block area had to be evacuated, affecting about 50 people. workers say they had no indication there was gas main in the area. people grabbed what they could

after he got the knock at the door and were ordered to evacuate. not everybody had time to gather up their pets. they called the police and they told us to get out and just basically leave everything behind. i have dogs in the house that i couldn't even get out. >> reporter: about 10:30 this morning workers installing a new sewer line on south 47th street in richmond dug into a pg and e gas main with a bac backh. by early afternoon that 2 inch plastic pipe was replaced after two dozen homes were evacuated. >>evacuated. >> we got a knock on the door saying we're evacuating down the block, and i was like okay, why, and they said there's a main gas line that broke. >> reporter: richmond fire officials say the contractor cor told them the gas line was not properly marked. they said the plans that they had had no indication that there was a gas line at depth and so they didn't know it was there. >> reporter: a supervisor from the contractor at the scene told abc 7 news that pg and e failed

to market gas line at this spot unlike other nearby locations where the utility properly sprayed yellow paint, indicate gadgets linagas line below. pg and e is investigating. after the backhoe sliced through the line, a pungent odor filled the neighborhood. >> it's horrible. you never want to smell gas in your whole life. never. if this happens again, i'm outta here. >> at this point we were just worried about making sure that the gas didn't collect in someone eals house an's house an ignition source. >> th an hour or so later 50 residents were allowed back in the homes. >> they said they were fixing the sewer lines and everything. i think they found a different line than the sewers. >> reporter: pg and e took about 30 minutes for its workers to get to the scene. there are no automatic shutoff valves here. p g and e has contacted the

public utilities commission and they're investigating whether or not the lines were properly marked. >> john, thank you. pg and e accidentally damaged a pipeline thursday at beal and mission. i was out there after a crew workers backhoe ruptured a 16-inch distribution line. the leak caused the evacuation of people from nba businesses and -- fro from nearby business. pg and e is retesting a gas pipeline in woodside that burst during similar water testing last weekend. if it does well during high pressure water tests today, crews will seal the pipe and fill in the hole. so far pg and e isn't reporting any problems. the testing will continue throughout the day. when the pipe segment failed last sunday, it sent mud and water gushing down a hillside on 280. utility crews have cut out the damaged section of pipe. occupy oakland firing up again tonight. hundreds of people are in the

plaza now for a 4:00 rally followed by a march. this is a live look at demonstrators getting ready to rally in march in defiance of an eviction order issued by the mayor yesterday. second order to vacate was issued today but so far no sign that the demonstrators will comply. we'll continue to monitor that situation and we'll bring you any updates. a $10,000 reward is being offered for information in the shooting death of a man near the occupy oakland camp. a man in his 20s known as alex was shot after a confrontation between two groups thursday. police say he was not part of the encampment. they're now looking for two suspects. the first is an african-american with short hair, 20 to 25, 5-9, 150 pounds. witnesses say he was a regular at occupy oakland. the second suspect is also african-american, 20 to 30 years old. 5-9 to 5-11, about 250 pounds with long dread locks with red tips. he may also have a tattoo on the back of his neck.

in san francisco occupy demonstrators are marching in solidarity today with egypt. the weekly march from the encampment at justin herman plaz started up thstarted up a while. the protesters are marching in support of egypt which is holding elections at the end of the month. 20 members of the occupy wall street group have been invited. a cal professor who had her hair yanked by university police said she's filing a complaint. seen here with her hair being pulled by officers said she wants a review of the police action. she and six others were arrested for resisting police as they tried to protect their encampment last wednesday. another protester was grabbed by the hair and thrown to the ground. a cal spokeswoman said officials are looking into the confrontation. in the oakland hills, some neighbors suspect a struggling economy is what's turning them into the most burglarized

neighborhood. here's how the neighborhood is now fighting back. >> you don't know whose house has a camera, but you better make sure if you come in here that we're armed. >> reporter: it was a clear warning to criminals casing oakland's neighborhood, an area hit hard by burglars. now homeowners are the ones doing the watching. >> as of today, you have over a hundred people in the community with cameras. >> reporter: the montclair surveillance camera pilot program launched today is a response to the rash in break-ins. it's the most burglarized neighborhood in the oakland hills and residents are tired of it. >> people broke in and spent very little time in the house, took a laptop, jewelry, cash, camera, watch. >> they had kicked in our front door. >> >> reporter: each time the burglars strike in the daytime when no one is home, residents are also worried about longer response times from police and department downsizing. >> we have to do our own

>> reporter: tradition, sports man shp anship and a hard fought football game set the university back on the road to recovery today. without the only coach most penn staters have ever known. joe paterno, who watched the game from home, 100,000 filled beaver stadium for the first time since the scandal broke. it was a day where football took a back seat to healing. the healing started with a blueout, a student led effort to bathe the stadium in blue, colors symbolic of the fight against child abuse. friday night students, faculty, and alumni joined for candlelight vigil remembering the victims of disgraced former coach jerry sandusky on the very spot where a few nights before students rioted following the dismissal of coach joe paterno. paterno was ousted wednesday by university trustees. many believe he could have done more to stop sandusky, an alleged serial pedophile. paterno's son jay was on the

least two years. as you can see we have clear skies. the rain is gone. >> yeah. >> a lot going on. big game tonight, big game tomorrow, and it's warm and dry and mild temperatures as we work our way through next week. here's a live look from our high definition camera. a beautiful setting sun. remember this time yesterday it was wet out there, it was dreary. you could see on my close up satellite that all of that moisture has pushed out of the bay area. it's actually headed down into southern california. we're enjoying some clearing right now. those clear skies will give way to some cooler overnight temperatures, and also the development of that valley fog. here's a look at some current readings. mid 60s for san rafael and santa rosa now. 64 in fairfield. 57 in san francisco. half moon bay with clear skies. 55. we have 60 in liver more, and antioch you see there, 62 degrees. so here are our lows for tonight. remember, we won't have as much cloud cover. some of that cooling will escape

going to demand a large ransom. he was taken by gunpoint outside his home wednesday night. it was the first known kidnapping of a major league baseball player from venezuela. san jose is taking another swing at getting the oakland as to head to the south bay. they approved a two year option on five aches i acres of land fa ballpark. >> reporter: this is a baseball stadium as owner wants to build in san jose. he said he would do it with $500 million in private development money. today the city stepped up to the plate, giving the as a two-year option to buy nearly five acres of city-owned land near down the. >> in some, it's hugely important to the city of san jose for revenue and jobs. we need both of those. >> reporter: many critics say the land deal doesn't make sense. the redevelopment agency paid a total of $25 million for the six parcells and is willing to sell the property for 7 million which

with the rain the past couple of days, we'll find out who is a mud der today. what are the conditions? >> reporter: well, yeah. it did rain out here yesterday, so the field is a little dit bit damp. i talked to the head grounds keeper, and he told me there should be no significant change to the turf. probably normal conditions out there. as you mentioned, oregon's game is all about speed. the no huddle offense is averaging 46 points a game and 300 yards rushing. stanford defense will get a boost tonight with the return of safety delano howell. he'll be wearing a cast tonight on his broken hand. he not only brings senior leadership but he may be the hardest hitter on the team. a few moments ago i spoke to him. >> w we've been waiting for this all year. i haven't been able to talk about it all year. this is the time, man. we're excited. we have a lot of faith in our offense. we're excited. oregon's a great team. we're excited for the challenge

tonight. >> with the chance to stay undefeated and remain in the race for the bcs national title, this very well could be the biggest regular season game in stanford football history. back to you. >> rick, before i let you go, my head says oregon. my heart is with stanford. i have to believe quarterback andrew luck will not let his team loose. could you feel any tension in the cardinal program or are they loose as usual? >> reporter: they look pretty loose. in fact, davis shaw walked by me just a few moments ago. he looked like he was headed for a picnic. no tension at all. i think this team is ready to play. if they can control the football tonight, i think the cardinals will come away with the victory. >> rick likes the cardinal. 5 p.m. kickoff here on abc 7. stick around for after the game. larry, yours truly, and rick will break down the day in college football. cal is trying to break oregon state's spell on them. they've won five of the last six, 10 of the last 12, and the last four. it's the last call for them to beat the beavers.
