dominican-born u.s. citizen is charged with doing just that. he's accused of making bombs right in his own bedroom. that's what could have happened, according to new york city police. duplicating a device they say was being made by this man, 27-year-old jose pimintel. he was arraigned late sunday on numerous terrorism-related charges. >> he was a so-called lone wolf, motivated by his own resentment of the presence of american troops in iran and afghanistan. as well as inspired by al qaeda propaganda. >> they've been tracking him for two years. but moved quickly over the week end to arrest him because he was ready to carry out his plan. >> we think that an event that really set him off was the elimination of anwar al awlaki. that happened on september 30th of this year.

>> police describe pimintel as an al qaeda sympathizer. they said he spent time on radical websites. he looked at something called how to make a bomb in your kitchen. his alleged targets, government workers, returning troops, and elected official. >> he made some of his like-minded friends nervous by his extremism. >> his lawyer said his client was not trying to conceal anything and had a public online profile. new york's mayor say this is is the 14th lone wolf terror attempt on the city. >> he was not part of a larger conspiracy emanating from abroad. >> jose pimintel is a recent convert to islam. he lived with family members who said he always kept his bad bedroom door shut. congressional lawmakers heading home for thanksgiving can expect more anger going their way. the so-call ee eed supercommittw

admits it failed. tahman bradley joins us this morning with more. good morning, tahman. >> good morning, sunny. later today we expect to hear from the cochairs of that congressional supercommittee. they were lking for more than $1 trillion to cut from the budget. we expect to hear that that committee has failed in its mission. >> obviously, nobody wants to quit until the stroke of midnight. >> reporter: the stroke of midnight came and went with no deal. later today, a congressional supercommittee that was tasked to find $1 trillion in cuts is poised to admit failure. >> it wasn't so much a failure as it was a failure to seize an opportunity. >> reporter: they were tasked with cutting $1.2 trillion in debt. now it means automatic cut gos into effect. but not until 2013. that means that the debt will continue to grow. the washington blame game began in earnest over the weekend.

>> we have to have on the table the revenue. that is the sticking point today. >> reporter: another breakdown by lawmakers in washington that has many americans saying they have had enough. as we found out at our abc "tell washington" cameras. >> don't go home for thanksgiving before you get a deal done. or else go home and don't come back. >> wake up. you work for us. you don't work for yourself. >> we seem to want to be right rather than come up with a solution. >> reporter: market analysts don't expect a huge selloff on wall street. >> because wall street has such low expectations, there hasn't been any real thought that they would get a deal done. >> reporter: president obama, who stayed out of the negotiations, echoed american's feelings, saying congress needs to do its job. sunny? >> tahman bradley live in washington, thank you. first lady michelle obama's office is downplaying the reception she received at the final nascar event of the

[ cheers and boos ] >> gentlemen, start your engines. >> it does sound like some boos there. the white house says it is a chaotic event, they're not sure what the boos may have been for. some fans may have been upset at having been moved from their seats in order to accommodate the official party. the u.s. and allies are rolling out new sets of sanctions today, aimed at stopping iran's nuclear ambitions. they'll target iran's nuclear sector. they'll plug holes that work ar allowed iran to work around existing sanctions. the moves come amid growing concern that they're new york g i -- they're working on nuclear weapons.

the iranians say their nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. this is the third day of protests here in egypt. the military rulers are being demanded to transfer power to a new government. 13 protesters have been killed since sad. a yale graduate in part of a crash on saturday is blaming the vehicle. 30-year-old nancy berry was struck and killed in the parking lot by a rented u-haul in the pa the tailgating. two other women were injured as well. brandon ross was carrying beer kegs in that truck but he passed a sobriety test. tragedy at the philadelphia marathon. two runners collapsed and died of heart attacks. one was a 21-year-old dean's list student at the university of pennsylvania. the other was a 40-year-old man. both of the men died at or near the finish line. there's been a run on warm clothing in fairbanks alaska. the temperature plunged to 35

there is disappointment in the financial sector this morning. members of the so called supercommittee in congress say they are deadlocked. they will not meet this week's dead lynne to cut the nation's debt. that reinforces the perception of a highly dysfunctional government. tokyo's nikkei average fell 27 points today. hong kong's hang seng was off 265. and in london, the ftse opened lower. on wall street, the dow lost 358

point last week. although it is up more than t20 for the year. the nasdaq index fell 106 points last week. though gas prices are higher this year than any other thanksgiving, they're coming down. the average cost of self-serve regular is $3.36. down more than 6 cents from a week ago. there's less demand now because it gets dark earlier with the end of daylight savings time. experts are saying take it pretty easy on this friday. some people, of course, are going to great lengths to be the first in the stores. for those coveted black friday deals. there may be no need. last year, many of the most popular electronics items were cheaper in the two weeks after black friday. word to the wise there. also, let your fingers do the walking. use the internet to find out what deals retailers are announcing in the coming weeks. nearly all of the stores will use social media, as well as websites, to tell shoppers about bargains. and also to offer online

"breaking dawn part one" did half of its business on friday, the opening day, to stake out first place. overall, it grossed a heart-stopping $139 million. "happy feet 2" was second. with an unhappy $22 million. pedro area has been slowly sliding toward the ocean for months. weekend rainfall caused big chunks of it to fall into the pacific. the road was closed so nobody was hurt. >> incredible video there. rain drenches i-20 from dallas to shreveport. and also i-35 in oklahoma city. flooding meanwhile in parts of i-40 from little rock to memphis. wet on i-64 from louisville to west virginia. i-95 in the northeast. slick out west on parts of i-5 and 84 and 90. if you're flying, airport delays are possible in dallas, memphis, washington, d.c., and philadelphia. sfwlmpblt and now to a story that has sparked outrage ever since the video hit the internet on friday. it shows seemingly peaceful protesters getting prayed by pepper spray.

>> the officers involved have been sanctions. a full-scale investigation is under way. abc's bazi kanani reports. >> reporter: if the point of a protest was to draw attention. this one worked by drawing outrage. >> it felt like my face was peeling off. >> reporter: campus police at u.c. davis sprayed pepper spray directly into the faces of occupy protesters who refused to move after being warned.d a dir >> i received a direct shot of pepper spray down my throat. i spent the next hour dry-heaving and vomiting. >> reporter: 11 students were treated for minor injuries. campus police defended the action saying their officers were surrounded by the protesters. >> it was for the safety of the officers and arrestees. so they could -- so we could leave. >> reporter: two of the officers were placed on leave. the school's chancellor has ordered an investigation. >> i personally feel bad about what happened to the students. the whole incident. >> reporter: just how far can police go? to control a crowd?

>> tear gas you spray it in the area you want people to move away from. pepper spray the to keep the people from being able to mount an attack. >> reporter: many reacting to the video say it was too strong a punishment for this act of civil disobedience. here in new york city where the occupy movement started, police have been criticized here for the oous of pepper spray. police are clear about their policy. police can use it now when someone is resisting arrest or when someone is protecting themselves. bazi kanani, abc, new york. volunteers and police are searching for a missing corral florida mom who disappeared last week. michelle parker disappeared shortly after her appearance on "the people's court." the episode was taped months ago. people say they have a violent past but friends don't think he was involved in her disappearance. an autopsy is planned for a university of arkansas football player who unexpectedly died on campus.
