the independent business owner who also needs this holiday shopping season to be a good one. >> most of the neighborhood stores have taken a big hit because of this economy and having a day like this really promotes the small businesses. >> if the economy doesn't turn, small businesses really struggle a lot. >> event organizers credit small business saturday for boosting sales 28% last year. this year, they're confident sales will be even better. namely because more communities are joining the effort. >> the time, the attention, the incentives and the care they give are worth a lot of money to members of the community. >> i love the small stores because you find what's different. >> but shopping with major retailers is still the route most go. black friday sales were higher than last year which means people are spending again. but according to consumer psychologists kit yarrow,

shoppers still want their dollar to stretch as far as possible. >> small businesses frankly just can't offer the price points that large companies can and so i think ultimately, consumers are probably going to lean more towards buying at the major retailers because they'll save money. >> traffic was light and in the marina district, boutiques offered some savings. in san jose's willow glenn neighborhood, many shoppers admit they're spending less this year while still looking for unique items. >> it's definitely not the mall and that's what i'm trying to escape this year. >> 89 million people are expected to take part in this event meaning they say they will shop small. and according to a study conducted by american express, san francisco ranked second in the entire nation for overall small business vitality. live in san francisco, lisa amin-gallejan, abc 7 news.

>> even president obama pitched in to help small businesses getting into the holiday shopping season. the president took his daughters to a bookstore a few blocks from the white house. the obamas walked out with a selection of books ranging from diary of a wimpy kid cabin fever to dissent into chaos, the u.s. and the disaster in pakistan, afghanistan and central asia. >> and they are closing another store in the east bay. it will be shutting down its telegraph avenue store. they recently closed their store also in berkeley. the san francisco based grocery store chain has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. they blame their money problems on aggressive expansion and the economic downturn. five of their stores around the bay area will remain open. >> the move by some retailers to open at midnight on black friday appears to have been a good decision. retail analysts say this was the best black friday in the nation's history. america's research group estimates sales increased about 10% to 14% across the country.

on-line sales spiked this year. according to researchers, sales jumped 39% on thanksgiving day and consumers spent 20% more on line during black friday compared to last year. the thanksgiving shopping weekend accounted for just over 12% of overall holiday sales last year and black friday made up about half of that. and black friday got a little out of hand in los angeles county. now a woman has turned herself in for using pepper spray on customers. this is cell phone video capturing the chaotic scene. the unidentified woman caused minor injuries to 20 shoppers at this wal-mart in upscale portage ranch. she was jockeying for a discounted xbox gaming system and began spraying people in order to clear out the competition. >> members of occupy san francisco and other groups are on the march tonight. the theme, immigrant rights.

you're taking a live look right now at a live picture from 16th and mission right next to a bart station. you can see the people there, some on their bikes. occupiers walked there from justin herman's plaza but won't be here for long. at the bottom of the hour, they plan to march to 24th and mission along the traditional latino district of the city. and take another live look outside. today's march has been noisy but calm. police are making their presence known so it stays that way. >> and occupy l.a. protesters say they will ignore a monday morning deadline to leave their encampment. the 485 tent encampment has been on the lawn for more than 350 days. the mayor told the campers to start packing up their tents because the camp will be closed at 12:01 a.m. monday morning. he says it's time for the area to be cleaned and restored. the protesters have a choice to leave on their own or face arrest. but the mayor believes the eviction will be peaceful. >> there may be three victims of a scam craig's list ad.

>> at least two murders are being linked to a phony craig's list ad that police say is a deadly robbery scene. it brought single divorced men to a bogus farm job near columbus, ohio. two recent murders in the area may be linked to the ad. they say it led to the shooting death of a man in norfolk, virginia and a man in south carolina reported answering the posting but managed to escape after being shot. one woman who replied to the ad but didn't get a response said she spoke with the f.b.i. >> she said they weren't sure if there were more victims or how many there was going to be in the end but they knew that a lot of people had responded to the ad. >> two people from the akron area were arrested last week in connection with those shootings. a high school student has been charged with attempted murder and a 52-year-old man is in jail on unrelated charges. >> back here in the bay area, detectives in north richmond are asking for help in tracking down a wanted murderer. officers from the contra costa

sheriff's department say a 20-year-old died last night after being shot inside a store at fifth and market. police found the suspect's vehicle but they're still looking for that gunman. anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the sheriff's department. >> cleanup continues today on a 12 inch water main that burst in south san francisco. yesterday's rupture sent water just shooting into the air. check that out. and it flooded in the surrounding neighborhood. authorities closed streets and evacuated several homes near magnolia and palm. people were allowed back into their homes several hours after the break. the line is now back in service. it's one of several pipelines that provide water to san francisco and parts of san mateo county. the cause of the break remains under investigation. >> bad news for them. good news for hoop fans tonight. the owners and players union have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract. if approved, basketball will tip off on christmas day ending a 149 day lockout. an exhausted commissioner

addressed the media. >> we expect our labor relations committee to endorse this deal, this tentative agreement. and we expect our board of governors that we will call after that to endorse the deal. and we expect that a collective bargaining agreement will arise out of this deal as well. >> after playing a pickup game at fort mcnear this morning, president obama shouted his approval over the agreement. mike shuman will be along later in sports with more reaction from players and the owners. >> can you imagine that? christmas day, basketball. >> how are you? >> hi, guys! >> did you see sun today? a little bit. >> yeah, it was nice. >> east bay, though, i'll tell you, livermore, brentwood, oakley, kind of socked in with the fog. most of your saturday and, of course, temperatures there only in the 50's but where we did see the peek of sun has turned out to be a beautiful day.

this is from our high definition cam looking west towards san francisco, the bay bridge there and also you'll notice some of those high clouds drifting in as well. you can get a sense of what i'm talking about on the close-up satellite. you can see some of the high clouds off the coast but you can definitely see all that central valley fog. we had a nice easterly wind and it's just taking it from it, central valley and push willing it back towards the bay area. consequently, temperatures inland only in the 50's today. but we did manage the mid, even some upper 60's with monterey today, 69 degrees so the fog will reform overnight tonight. we have an advisory that's posted. you can see the difference in the temperature. half moon bay right now, 68 degrees. compare that to where the fog has been sitting today. antioch, 51. and 59 right now in san francisco. so here's a look at our highlights. fog once again tonight. mild afternoon temperatures for

the next few days. as we head to the latter part of next week, the clouds will start to thicken up. temperatures will start to come down. dense fog advisory up through 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. widespread dense fog with visibility less than a fourth of a mile. north bay valleys, east bay valleys, even around parts of san francisco, so keep that in mind. especially if you're doing some early traveling tomorrow maybe heading back down to southern california. or even north at the north bay if you've been here on vacation. high pressure double barrel will protect us, really pushing that jet stream to the north of us. the storm track will stay north of the bay area for at least the next few days so look for this dry weather pattern to hold true. really on through the middle part of next week. lows tonight, low 40's in the north bay, elsewhere we'll look for 46 for san francisco. oakland 45. san jose 43 and very mild, once that fog lifts especially for san jose. 68 degrees. mountain view 68. we'll keep upper 50's near the

coast. you notice a few of those high clouds as well. in the north bay and also the east bay valleys, depending on when that fog lifts will really determine your temperature but 64 for petaluma. 66 for union city. antioch and brentwood maybe a little thinning of that fog tomorrow, temperatures back town the low to mid 50's for you. 62 for antioch and 64 from concord. even around monterey bay, that's where you want to be tomorrow with temperatures getting into you the mid to low 70's in some locations. accuweather seven day forecast with the exception of that dense valley morning and night fog, get ready for temperatures to be quite mild for this time of year. 730 -- 70 across the bay area. we could possibly see some showers back here next weekend. >> i'll take the 70's. >> decent weather in palo alto

>> we may have basketball after all. nba owners and players have reached a tentative agreement pending approval from both sides of the table. they met for 15 hours yesterday and announced today they agreed

on a deal. they're not saying much about the specifics. good news for the fans, both fans can get a majority vote in favor of the new deal. a 66 game season will begin on christmas day. the nba players also need to drop their antitrust lawsuit before voting on the deal. there's still drug testing and other issues that need to be sorted out. the training camps could get started on december 9th. >> most important key thing here is that, you know, our fans and the support from the people. and that's what a lot of this credit goes to. you know, the efforts that have been made largely with them in mind. >> stay tuned. all right, meanwhile, stanford hosts notre dame on senior day on the farm which includes quarterback andrew luck and it will be the final home game for andrew. i'm going to miss him. the senior will be looking to go 3-3 in his career against notre dame. he beat the irish in south bend last year. even though this will be his last hooray on the farm, his

>> in san francisco right now, immigrant rights groups along with members of occupy san francisco are getting ready to march. we'll take a live look. you're looking at 16th and mission streets in the city. you can see they have lots of signs there that they're carrying. the group plans to march to 24th and mission along the traditional latino district in san francisco. protesters marched from justin herman plaza and held a brief rally. just about every saturday since the occupy san francisco movement began, there has been a march. today's theme, immigrant rights. >> a deadly nato attack on a

pakistani border post is having far reaching repercussions. the white house has already expressed condolences over the attack but as abc's simon mcgregor would report, pakistan still retaliated for the missile strike on its soldiers. >> pakistan accused nato helicopters and fighter jets of firing on two army checkpoints along the afghan border early saturday morning. >> it's really shocking for our people, for the country, for our leadership. everybody is dazed at to what they are doing. >> for now, u.s. military officials are refusing to either apologize or to clearly say that the nato units were receiving fire and retaliated in self-defense. >> the commander of the international securities assistant force has stated that he's personally paying the highest attention to this matter. and that he's committed to thoroughly investigate and determine the facts. >> pakistan reacted swiftly and forcefully to what is considered the most serious border incident in 10 years of war.

the pakistani defense committee decided to ask the u.s. to leave the pakistani air base that's believed to be used for drone attacks against terror suspects in the region. pakistani government also closed two border crossings into afghanistan. the same ones used by nato forces to truck about a third of all nonlethal supplies needed for the war in afghanistan. the military relationship between the u.s. and pakistan was already severely strained after u.s. commandos killed usama bin laden in a pakistani garrison town last may. simon mcgregor wood, abc news. >> police in the philippines arrested four people who allegedly hacked into at&t's phone systems as part of a plan to funnel money to a saudi based terror group. according to investigators, the hackers worked for a group that helped fund a deadly 2008 terror attack in mumbai, india. they say that hacking costs at&t around $2 million. at&t couldn't immediately

comment today. the arrest came after a complaint filed by at&t and the f.b.i. at&t said by tuesday, that hack was unsuccessfully attempted to link a mobile numbers with on-line customer accounts. but it's unclear if that incident is linked to the arrest. >> the first of three american students arrested during an anti-government protest in egypt is home tonight. 19-year-old gregory porter stepped off a plane in philadelphia today. porter did not take questions. only saying he's thankful to be back. porter, luke gates and derek sweeney, all students at american university in cairo were arrested last sunday. they were accused of tossing firebombs at security forces but they were released on thursday. derek sweeney's mother reacted to the news. >> i can't stop giggling, laughing, almost wanting to cry all at the same time. we're all just so very, very, very grateful. and we all want to give him a big hug. get him home and hold him in our arms. >> all three men deny they did anything wrong.

gates, sweeney are expected to land in the u.s. sometime tonight. >> south bay military moms got together today to make their loved ones stationed in iraq, afghanistan and around the world are not forgotten and san jose park, christmas trees were decorated not only with ornaments but with pictures of soldiers. blue star moms, those are son and/or daughters in the military have made the special tree trimming an annual event. >> we have our christmas tree, our blue star mom's christmas tree. we are mothers of the military. we are proud mothers of the military. they're our children, sons and daughters, nephews, nieces and we're here to display them and remind the community that there are children out there. >> now, the trees are also decorated with gold stars as you see there with pictures inside. those signify those who died in service to our country. the trees will be on display through the end of the year. >> in economic news, the job market is looking up for the

holidays. california added 27,000 jobs last month. the second largest hiring spree in the country. but a new labor department report shows the state still has the nation's second highest unemployment rate at 11.7%. so many people out of work, the holiday shopping season offers hope but as abc 7's lisa amin-gallejan reports, this year those seasonal jobs are tough to come by. >> the holiday shopping season is the biggest selling period of the year for retailers. and with the usual wave of sales comes the onslaught of seasonal worker applications. >> according to the national retail federation, last year, retailers hired half a million seasonal workers. this year, they're expected to hire roughly the same amount. one of the main reasons, on-line shoppers. in 2009, on-line shopping accounted for only 11% of overall sales. last year, shoppers bought just under 30% of holiday items on

line. this year, that's expected to jump to 35%. which means stores will need fewer helpers who will work longer hours. thomas beatty is with manpower job placement center. >> if you're available to work, you know, late night or from -- late night to early morning, definitely will help you to get the job. >> more retailers are staying open on thanksgiving and black friday starts at midnight in some stores. this seasonal worker will work an 18-hour shift on friday. he's hoping it will pay off. >> only going to keep about three to four people for full time and hiring 50 seasonal. >> employers continue to hold all the cards. >> i get almost 10 to 20 people a day asking me for a job from 16-year-olds to grown men wearing suits. >> right now, santa clara county's unemployment rate is 9.5%. in san jose, abc 7 news.

>> right now, nasa's largest ever robot on its way to mars to study the red planet. the six wheeled robot named curiousity will spend two years looking for evidence that microbrial life could exist on the red planet. the one ton robot, 10 photo tall and nine feet wide is a mobile nuclear powered laboratory,

equipped with high definition and laser cameras as well as a jackhammer and some other instruments used for hunting organic compounds. >> it's going to look for places that are habitable either in the past or potentially even in the future or currently. it's doing a real estate assessment, where those good schools on mars, where might there be microbes living or some type of life. >> this is nasa's first launch to mars in four years and the first flight of a martian rover in eight years. very cool. >> that is neat. >> some of us got some sun today. >> most of us are right near the coast, upper 60's, 70 degrees. those out towards oakley, brently, and towards the livermore valley area, that easterly wind pushed that central valley fog and kept it over your head all day long. temperatures there only in the 50's but you can see a beautiful shot from our high definition camera right now, nice setting sun. we're seeing some clear sky over the east bay hills. let me show you the satellite

and get a sense of what you're talking about. through the course of today, this is the central valley fog. those easterly winds picking it up and pushing it towards the west. so those of you inland locations in the 50's today but right near the coast, a few high clouds and plenty of sunshine. temperatures warmed up nicely into the mid and even upper 60's. chilly inland, 50's there. 51 antioch. livermore at 54 degrees. concord, 52. half moon bay right now with that nice setting sun, 68 degrees. what a treat there. 62 mountain view and 63 in san jose. here is a look at our highlights, fog will reform tonight. advisories are up, we'll get to that. mild afternoons the next few days and bring in some clouds and cool things down as we head into the latter part of next week. here is that advisory, dense valley fog advisory through 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.

fog throughout much of the inland valley areas, east bay, north bay locations. even around some parts of san francisco so keep that in mind. especially if you're doing some traveling tomorrow. heading out towards the five, heading down to southern california or northern california, you'll find that central valley fog as well. all the way points southward, too. high pressure continuing to build in. you can see the arcing of the clouds, the good indication that that ridge is slowly starting to build towards the north, that jet stream will stay north of the bay area through about mid week. after that, it will start to break down and that's when the cooler air mass will move in and the next chance of showers it looks like mainly in north bay as we head into next friday and saturday. lows tonight with that fog forming near 40 degrees for napa as well as santa rosa. 46 san francisco. fremont, 43 and 40 for livermore. if you're doing some traveling tomorrow, sacramento 61 degrees with plenty of sunshine there. once the fog lifts, fresno all

the way down south, though, we'll look for that fog in the central valley area. big sur will warm to 68 degrees. los angeles 82 and san diego, plenty of sunshine there as well. here's a look at the highs. where the fog lifts early in the day, that's where the sun will shine and we'll see warmer temperatures so 68 for san jose and 68 for campbell. 62 for half moon bay. mid to upper 60's for the peninsula with mountain view in there. in the north bay, depending on just when that fog lifts, we'll be a little bit more optimistic tomorrow. look for mid 60's or so for sonoma. 65. peninsula, in the east bay, oakland 66. 65 for fremont and interior east bay, fog lifts a little sooner so low 60's there. a little warmer for your sunday. we'll look for 71 degrees tomorrow for watsonville. night and morning fog the next few days. plenty of sunshine, though. mild temperatures in the 70's.

menu here in burlinggame and it isn't the capaceo, it's the calories. >> we have nutritional facts and calories. we got it for our entire menu including the dessert menu. >> a growing number of chain restaurants are telling customers right on their menus how many calories they're about to scarf. >> we have a 22 ounce porterhouse steak that's the highest calorie count at 1400. >> menu labelling took off last year when california passed a law requiring chain restaurants to post calories next to food items. the aim is to fight obesity. however, the law was stopped in its tracks, ironically when president obama signed the health care reform bill. >> we had the state law that was still in effect but the federal law pre-empt ed the state law. >> here's what's happening. the health care reform law requires calorie posting, too, and it says states cannot have a different calorie law. that's threw california into confusion. the law here must be exactly the same as the federal law but

that's still in flux. the feds still have to adopt specific rules which probably won't happen until summer. until then, there is no law in place. the confusion was evident here at this mexican restaurant. calories were posted and then taken down. now, they're up again. >> there was some confusion in some corners of the restaurant industry because obviously, there's some restaurant companies that did not want to make the change. >> mcdonald's in san francisco has posted calories up there next to the prices, even though the law is still in limbo. >> the changes that we do in our restaurants are driven by what our guests want. they wanted to know what's in a hamburger, what's in the milkshake? >> here at carl jr., the company has refused to post calories until ordered to do so by the feds. >> caloric labelling has no impact on consumers. >> carl jr.'s ceo testified before congress against forced menu disclosures. he was not available for an

interview. however, his spokesperson said customers don't go to carl jr. to lose weight. she said we like to think our target market is young, hungry guys. 18 to 34-year-old men. we're not marking any diet burgers. they're delicious, big, very cravable burgers. if people want to come in and treat themselves to. she said carl's junior has a poster in every restaurant listing nutritional information and for now, wants to avoid the expense of changing all its menus until it has to. so what about you? do you want to know how many calories are in that fried calamari or double cheeseburger? >> i think it's important. we do have a health problem in america. >> i think ignorance is bliss. if you just don't know how many calories you're taking in, you're not going to beat yourself up. >> i think it makes it a little harder to justify it for yourself when you're like oh, i'm about to consume like 1,000 calories in one sandwich. >> i don't think it's the federal government's responsibility for my calorie

>> it's senior day on the farm and that entails a lot of different emotion. final game at home, your career almost over with your class. in the stanford case, they're looking to beat notre dame and keep their bcs game hopes alive. down on the farm 35 years after his senior day and rick, if oregon wins they're out of the pac 12 title game. what's the mood of the team and the fact it's senior day? >> it's likely very sentimental. hopefully going to be a very fond farewell for these guys. besides senior day, several red shirt juniors will be saying good-bye. martin and linebacker chase thomas are expected to turn pro so this will all in likelihood be their final home game. now, this game is also very important because a win over notre dame would improve the cardinals' record to 11-1 and all but ensure themselves of a spot in the bcs bowl game.

a couple of things to look for tonight, the cardinals will be sporting new uniforms provided by nike. just for this contest. they're called pro combat and feature a darker red than the usual cardinal. also, a big question going into this game was would tight end be available, he's been out for a few months with a knee injury. i spoke to him a few moments ago. >> i feel good. it's been a long time since i played last. i'm excited for this game. >> will you be able to play tonight? >> yes, i will be playing tonight. >> tell me, how tough has it been having to sit out the last month? >> it's been tough. we played oregon state. oregon, cal, those have been big names i've missed. excited to play notre dame tonight. >> so he's joining the tight ends, and the three amigos will be back together again. back to you. >> thanks a lot. looking forward to your post-game interviews. stanford-notre dame coming up on abc 7. stick around for after the game with larry biel and yours truly.
