joining us. i'm carolyn tyler. red cross says 60 people need to find a new place to live this morning after their apartments were damaged or destroyed by fire last night. investigators say the fire on homestead road begin just before 6:00 when cook oil overheated. they spent night at a nearby high school. they will find out this morning if any of their belongings survived. here is tomas ramon. >> reporter: the fire begin in unit 45 at the village green apartments in cupertino and spread quickly. more than 80 firefighters joined in a mutual aid effort to put it out. jay park says he didn't know there was a fire until he heard screams. >> there was a girl outside screaming. that is when i realized there was a peir going on outside. >> he and his brother tried to put it out. >> we were trying to stop it but

you couldn't do anything. it was too dark. >> his apartment is safe, the one where the fire started is gone. that is where a woman was cooking according to firefighters. >> a person had warmed up some oil. it basically, she left, few minutes later she comes back in and sees a fire in the kitchen again. >> she called 911 and ran out. fire spread to six other units, one of them is where he lived. >> what did you lose? >> i don't know. i have to wait. >> it was heavy damage. >> in this building, eight units are destroyed, they whether not be happen tackle for some time. the high school gym is a center for the residents. the other apartment dwellers

will be able to go back today and gather belongings. they are going to try to find these families some temporary housing. couple hours after the cupertino fire broke out a fire in southeast san jose destroyed a home at a mobile home park on blossom hill road. that fire started when a woman forgot about candles burning in her bedroom. the fire was contained to her home. the body of a bay area marine killed in afghanistan will arrive at travis air force base tomorrow for a funeral later this week. last night hundreds turned out for a public memorial. 19-year-old joshua corral was killed november 18th while conducting military operations in the helman province. john alston was in danville for last night's service. >> they poured into the stadium at san ramon valley high school

where he had played sports. they were back to honor the 19-year-old marine who died serving his country. his father read a letter to his son. >> you can never imagine how proud i am to be your dad, your coach, your buddy. i love you son. i love you so very much. i'm so grateful that i had a chance to talk to you before you left us. >> lance corporal corral was killed last week. his job was to sweep for roadside bombs. friends and classmates shared memories of the 5'6" inch kid who graduated only a year ago but took on the most dangerous jobs in the military. >> i see him laughing and smiling.

>> you gave your life, i hear you. >> the event at the high school was the third tribute in less than a week for him. next week a procession and funeral are planned when his body returns back home. a man was struck and killed after he tried to run across interstate 880 in berkeley in an attempt to get away from police. the highway patrol says they spotted the man weaving in and out of traffic while driving eastbound on 80 just before 11:00 last night. the driver pulled off to the shoulder of the road and tried to run. he was struck by several cars and killed. police have yet to release his identity. >> a marine just home from iraq is in critical condition. police say he was intentionally run over in san francisco. according to investigators the

suspect is this man who got into a fight with the victim outside a restaurant on geary thursday morning. after the fight broke up the victim walked to a nearby gas station. the suspect got into this car, drove to the gas station, hit the victim and then sped away. the victim who is now working as a firefighter remains at san francisco general hospital. protestors plan to demonstrate at four u.c. campuses where regents are scheduled to meet by teleconference. monday's agenda expands the time for students to talk from the usual 20 minutes to an hour. students say they will complain about tuition hikes and express outrage over the videotaped pepper spraying by campus police. they plan to repeated their call for the dismissal of chancellor and attempt to shut down the

campus with a general strike. the protest locations include u.c. san francisco, u.c. davis, merced and ucla. >> numbers of occupy san francisco are promising this morning to retake their market street encampment. they indicate they are setting up in front of wells fargo bank near the federal reserve. there is a post on twitter they set up an information table this morning, but have not tried to put up any tents which you might recall police ordered removed last weekend. yesterday they joined forces with other groups marching for immigrant rights. >> the crowd marched from justin hermann plaza to 16th and mission street and up mission to 24th. that comes one day after dozens squared off with san francisco police while trying to discourage people from shopping near union square on black friday. occupy l.a. protestors say

they plan to ignore a monday morning deadline to leave their encampment. 485 tents have been on the lawn at city hall for more than 50 days. mayor antonio villaraigosa has told the campers to start packing up because the camp will be closed at 10:01 a.m. they have a choice to leave on their own or face arrests. yesterday dozens of protestors attended a teach-in. it was resistance training, how to stay safe in the face of tear gas and pepper spray. >> police clashes between protestors in oakland appears to be the motive behind an attack in seattle. police there say someone broke or shattered almost all the windows on a u.s. bank branch early in the morning. they left a message claiming it was in revenge for occupy oakland. the vandalism is said to be in the tens of thousands of

to presidential politics, an influential newspaper endorsement goes to newt gingrich in the gop race. it's a really setback for mitt romney. david curley reports from washington on the later sign, some conservatives are adopting an anybody but mitt stance. >> i actually gave my life to the lord. >> i truly gave my life to christ. >> these conservatives in the audience secretly, mitt romney is no show again hoping to stop him. >> i think this is social conservative that conservative voters can rally behind and from win the caucuses and deny any mitt romney any great momentum.

>> they tried to pick the anti-romney in iowa. vote for one conservative rather than splitting the voted which could end up giving a chance for romney to win iowa. newt gingrich the baggage of his life and work with government agencies. michele bachmann who has made serious flubs, perry with distrous debate performances, rick santorum has not gained any traction. iowa conservatives could not agree. they plan to meet again tomorrow to try to narrow the list. >> iowa has the first and one of the most powerful voices as to who our nominee will be. >> the worry for the conservatives is romney has a strong showing in iowa going into new hampshire where he is leading, he could be tough to beat. what is clear this is the month it will cut the republican field. we are now just a little more than a month away from the first

voters having their say in iowa. >> we're coming to clinch time. who do they like right now, but who do they want to be the president of united states and that is very different kind of decision. >> the social conservatives, most important paper in new hampshire has just endorsed newt gingrich, not romney who leads there. former secretary of state colin powell supported president obama's campaign is speaking out about the nation's need for leaders who can meet on middle ground. on this week he criticized congress for polarizing the nation. >> republicans and democrats are focusing more on extreme left and right. we have to come back to the center in order to compromise. story i like to tell our founding fathers were able to sit in philadelphia and make some of the greatest compromises

last night, they featured a special menu an item that the chef and owner loves. >> create a product of this quality, this high level you have to think about how much care and love has to be given to these animals. the statewide ban forbids the forced feeding of animals to produce it as well as the sale of the product but many restaurant owners say they will keep serving it no matter what. the law goes into effect in july. >> lisa argen is here right now to talk about the end of the holiday weekend forecast. >> is it foggy out there. dense fog advisory for another hour or so. this is a view from sutro. you are looking at mount tamalpais. we have visibility less than a quarter of a mile to north. san jose half a mile. airport delays, any rain? i'll let you know coming up.

the thanksgiving day weekend but now people are trying to make the getaway and this fog may not help. >> no. we already have delays at sfo. rain in the nation's midsection. really warm weather along the east. definitely unusual. from heavenly, sunshine, 27 at truckee, 32 at tahoe valley airport with no new snow in the forecast. in fact, it will be overdue by the time we see some. is a beautiful shot from mount tam. you see the fog and higher clouds. fog is pretty hard to get rid of for much of the bay area. we have light winds, a very stable atmosphere and it drains into the protected valleys. even elsewhere we're looking at some fog where we didn't have it yesterday. tomorrow will be a different story. here is a look where we're looking at the dense fog from the peninsula into the east bay.

also into the valleys with visibility reduced all morning long. we're talking less than a quarter of a mile where you would expect it by the delta down to nothing. look at here. around the airport, 47 minute delays, oakland, two and a half mile visibility with san jose only half mile visibility and hayward just over a mile. by 9:00 or 10:00, we erode that just a little bit. you see hazy sun and by afternoon we should see a decent day. 44 in redwood city with the warmer numbers at the coast. half moon bay leading the pack. monterey 61 degrees with a lot of sunshine along the central coast. we are looking the dense fog, partly cloudy the next few days. clouds and cooler temperatures by the end of the week. middle of the week, very gusty winds, above a thousand feet. we could see wind advisories posted into thursday.

here is a look what is going. on notice much more cloud cover this morning. the ridge is still with us. it's going to maintain dry weather all week long. another ridge will replace this one as it flies to the east. as it does it will allow for a weak frontal band to move in to the north of us. it's not going to disrupt the jetstream for anything from keeping us high and dry the next several days. we'll have the dry weather continue but subtle changes day to day. an extended period of dry weather. 56 in yosemite. look for 82 in los angeles. very warm weather right around california bucks for the bay area, about where you were yesterday. numbers should be in the mid-60s for above normal. 68 in campbell. 68 in palo alto. you should see 62. san francisco getting in sunshine at 63. in the north bay, tough to scour out these clouds, 60, 64 in petaluma. near east bay, very mild come

welcome back. these are tough times for neighborhood hardware stores, so many are being driven out of business by the big box giants. but a tiny san francisco store is bucking that trend. tuggies hardware opened in 1898 and still going strong. wayne freedman shows us what sets it apart. >> in a confusing maze like a city it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. where can you find an old fluorescent lighting fixture. >> i might have one. >> this is tuggies hardware in noe valley.

especially if parents are footing the bill but it is in san francisco, though in this case families do have the city on their side. >> it's more than five acres of green surrounded by high prices, just across from the embarcadero. a ten-year-old law prohibits permanent structures on this space and that includes a proposed playground. >> we don't have enough land here to kaitder to every group. >> they can walk or run through the park but if he wants to swing or slide the nearest is about a mile away. >> there are a lot of kids. i think it will not hurt if you ever a small playground for kids to do it. >> san francisco has the smallest percentage of children of any major city. opposition to something like a playground doesn't help.

welcome back everyone. it is 9:38. thank you for joining us on this last sunday in november. hope your thanksgiving was a good one. there is a lot to be grateful for. this a live look from camera atop mount tam, cam tam looking toward sutro, as lisa says the fog is thick and building and it's causing delays at the airport. >> that is right. if you are headed out. very busy day on top of the tule

fog that continues to blow into parts of the east bay. take a look at santa cruz, partly cloudy skies. a little bit further south. we're looking at sunshine and temperatures quite balmy. approaching 60 degrees. back home, it is chilly. vollmer peak and you notice the deck of clouds. it's growing taller. when we get to 2,000 feet and low sun angle it will have a hard time burning off. you will see hazy sunshine and mild temperatures for this time of the year. we have dense fog in spots. east bay valleys, the peninsula and, of course, in the north bay with visibility on average anywhere from 1-3 miles. pretty thick. but we are looking at changes to happen today that will help erode this deck and dissipate that fog. another weather system later on today that will help in precluding some of that dense

fog for tonight. definitely getting the changes around here. mild numbers along the coast. 56 in half moon bay. that is typical for this time of the year with light north-northeast wind pulling in more of the fog from the east bay. we will have a partly cloudy afternoon with the next several days, remaining quite mild. by the middle of the week, more clouds at the end of the week and temperatures will take a hit. it will be much cooler around here. some of those places today that don't clear, it's going to be chilly nonetheless. we are looking at the higher clouds mixed in with sunshine. a little moisture well to the north of us. we are looking at a southwest flow continuing to bring up some of the clouds cover but overall high pressure maintains its grip along the west coast. we are looking at dry conditions not only today but next weather

system coming down will be dry. it's going to maintain the dry weather but kick up the winds, bring cooler temperatures even into next week. we're talking about dry weather and warm weather, southern california, low 80s and not getting rid of that fog. san joaquin valley and central valley and sacramento valley, going to stay gray there. temperatures in the south bay will respond to that sun. we'll begin to scour that out. 67 later on in santa clara then fr8 in palo alto with sunshine and hazy at our coast. san francisco, partly cloudy and 63 today. 64 south city with ceilings lifting. 64 in petaluma. we're talking about sunshine. it will take a little bit of time. 66 in union city. 65 in pleasanton. cooler by the delta. monterey, already looking at 60 so talking low 70s and cool off. increasing clouds, breezy winds

it leads him to this mechanical man. >> they provide comic relief as the inspector who is dogging him. but there is a separate story to be played here. a shopkeeper but the secret hugo keeps changes direction of the film and it is a surprise. martin scorsese uses the work as a canvas to the tribute to the history of films. he has classics appreciated anew and it's done with such rich detail. a very enchanting film, a film says you are talking to me, it is. it's too stories in one. a loving homage to roots of his craft. beautifully photographed, 3-d works pretty well.
