>> police still searching tonight for the suspect who ran down a firefighter who is also a former iraq war veteran. >> family and friends are keeping vigil over the 29-year-old. he was critically injured on thanksgiving day. john alston is live at sf general where re spoke to people close to the man. >> reporter: the firefighter is here with a traumatic head and brain injury. family spokesperson says he is unconscious and on life support. >> 29-year-old albert vertal has taken on some of the most dane rouse jobs. he is a marine vern veteran and

firefighter but what put him in the hospital is a violent attack in his home town. >> his mother would like to express he is a dedicated father and son to her. he has served his country proudly as a marine, for several years. he is also now a firefighter with cal fire. >> thanksgiving morning around 2:45, he was involved in a identifying with another man at a restaurant. the two were separated and he walked to this gas station two blocks away. police say the suspect then got into this car drove to the gas station, and struck him critically injuring him. this attendant heard what happened. >> somebody hit the guy and drop over there with the blood and run away. >> san francisco police released photos of the suspect they believe got into the fight and who may have run down bartol thursday morning. >> there's certain things nobody can really explain in life.

we're phenomenal proud of his service in the marines and service with the fire service, we have had some huge challenges, forest fires, and he is a great participant in that. bartol was a single father, seen here with his daughter and mother. he spent four years in the marine corps, serving in iraq and reaching the rank of sergeant. for five years he has been a seasonal firefighter working oust of the saratoga summit fire station. >> this is a tragic event that nobody wishes to have happen to anyone. i don't know what to make of it. it's horrible. >> reporter: if you recognize the photo of the suspect, san francisco police want you to call them or text them right away. there is some surveillance video at the gas station which police may be getting ready to release anytime now. at this point the charges would be attempted murder and assault. live in san francisco. abc-7 news.

>> in berkeley man was truck and killed bay car after she tried to run across i-80 trying to get away from police. the highway patrol spotted the man we'ving in and out of traffic. he jumped out of a car and tried to run and was struck by several vehicles and was kill. the police have not released his name. >> alan: a reminder for those turning on their heaters for the first time. a hayward family was rushed to the emergency room after suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning this morning. the their heating system started leaking after it was turned on for the first time this season. the fire department is reminding residents to install carbon monoxide detectors. all single family homes have been required to have them since july. >> police in walnut creek made two arrests. just before 2:00 a.m. officers

responded to a fight involving 30 people and a stabbing outside the vice lounge. an hour earlier police found a man bleeding from the head on north main street. the 26-year-old man of danville was arrested for seattle with -- assault with a deadly weapon and two other men were arrested in connection with the fight at the vice lounge. >> overcooked french fires started a fire that was left unattended and destroyed eight units and damaged 15 units. the red cross set up a temporary evacuation center. one of the residents provided this home video to abc-7 news. it took 100 firefighters almost two hours to bring the blaze under control. residents tried to put it out before they arrived. >> we were trying to stop but it was already huge.

is planning its own investigation into the nato air strikes that killed 24 pakistani troops. funerals for the soldiers were held today and pakistan's army is blaming nato for the strikes near the afghan border. today afghan officials claim ted were retaliating against two pakistani bases who fired on them. pakistan is demanding the close a base and closed border crossings. >> an american student arrested during protest in egypt says he feared for his life. derek sweenie says he and the other students were taken into custody, beaten and threatened with guns. >> they said they were going to shoot us if we moved. and we spent about six hours that first night. nearly fetal position with our hands behind our back in the dark and they were behind us, and it was very scary.

>> breaking news, syracuse university fired assistant basketball coach bernie fines accused of sexually abusing a teenage boy. there is a secret recording made by the accuser nearly ten years. >> hello. >> hi. >> hello. >> the legal recording was made in 2002 by 39-year-old bobby davis, who has accused syracuse associate head basketball coach bernie fine of sexually molesting him for years starting when he was a team ball boy. on the tape davis talks with cline's wife lori fine who admits she knew her son sexually molested bobby davis in their home. >> i know everything that went on with this. what are you trying to do? you can be honest with me.

six miles visible with haze as well. so these locations, the visibilities will be coming down as the fog reforms overnight tonight. here's a look at some current readings. fog in concord. 48 right now. 56 in san francisco. half moon bay, 59. 56 in san jose. passing high clouds tonight. the valley fog redevelops overnight tonight as well. could slow you down especially early tomorrow morning. we'll go with a mixture of clouds and sunshine for the next few days. the wind is going to start to pick up. tuesday night wednesday and this and will help scour out valley fog so better visibility and a little bit more sunshine for you. tonight we look for temperatures dipping into the 40s. 57 for san francisco. livermore, 40 degrees, 43 with fog for antioch, and high

pressure still maintaining a nice ridge over much of the pacific northwest. it is a dirty ridge we call it just because some of the high clouds breaking through but it will provide a dry-weather pattern for us mid-week. by wednesday there's offshore winds will redevelop and that's going to help to scour out the fog. tomorrow look for temperatures maybe a few degrees warmer. 64 cupertino. he coast half moon bay, 63 degrees. look for a little more sunshine tomorrow afternoon. palo alto 64. san francisco tomorrow, 63 degrees. in the north bay, depending on when that fog scours out, will tell the story in terms of daytime high. 64 for santa rosa, 63 for napa. east bay oakland, 55. interior east bay the fog will set. so antioch, 62 concord, 63. if you want some warmth head down south.
