elective office. cain burst to the top of the republican field but plummeted in the poles in the wake of these allegations. one month ago he was at the top of the field in iowa. but the latest polls put him in the single digits. cain said he was at peace with himself and his family and vowed to carry on his fight. >> the nine-nine-nine plan. it's not going away. >> cain's implosion narrows the field of republican presidential hope philadelphias. newt gingrich and mitt romney are leading the pack. >> i don't think people have settled down to decide who they're going to support in the nomination process. >> now the scramble is on to win over cain's supporters. abc news, washington. >> alan: back in the bay area, strong wind gusts may have caused a fire in santa rosa. it burned a large barn filled with antiques and a motorhome. it's possible a line hit a barn

and sparked the fire. water trucks were called in. firefighters say they faced a number of hazards. >> we had several propane tanks, several stored vehicles, several outbuildings, several exposures, and a wind exposure. >> three nearby homes had to be evacuated but no one was hurt. on investigation continues into the cause of that fire. and a high wind advisory here is over but it's still pretty windy out there. meteorologist leigh glaser has been tracking the wind and is here live with more. >> leigh: the good news is the offshore winds, starting to subside a little bit. still get something pretty good gusts out there. especially in the north bay. santa rose sack gusts, 33 miles-per-hour. napa, gusts 'at 35. fairfield, gusty at 33. livermore, gusts out of the

north at 22 miles-per-hour. and oakland, the higher elevations, getting those north to northeasterly gusts at 31 miles-per-hour. starting to subside elsewhere. novato, easterly winds at 8 miles-per-hour. the winds are going to come down tonight. temperatures with less wind will mean colder numbers for all of us. the forecast is coming up. >> we have been dealing with strong winds but the brunt of the storm blew through southern california and created a mess. >> now the cleanup has begun. pasadena, streets strewn we debris, inmates clearing out the debris. >> the red cross has opened centers providing food and aid to people faked by the wind storm. >> we have more than 100 crews out. we expect those crews -- those crews have been called from as far away as utah, arizona, and bishop, to help restore power.

>> much of the debris has been pushed aside. but cleanup crews are working around the clock. powerlines toppled. homes devastated by downed trees. semi trucks all over the freeway. at lax, lights went out at all nine terminals at once, and transformers spit fire as the violent winds created a path of destruction. blustering winds in parts of utah and colorado blew at over 150 miles-per-hour. but california saw the worst of it. >> that was ginger shi reporting. at home, santa cruz county was one of the hardest hit areas and crews are continuing to work. as of this morning, 98 hundred

residents didn't have power. >> alan: "occupy" sf protesters are marching through the streets right now. we're live at their encampment at justin herman plaza with the latest. >> reporter: "occupy" san francisco is holing its weekly march and protest today. but today they're doing something a little different. they're marching to neighborhoods in the city in order to protest evictions and foreclosures there. >> "occupy" san francisco took to the streets this morning at 11:00 a.m. they marched into the bay view hunters point district, an area that experienced a high number of evictions and foreclosures, and they marched with union representatives who are striking at local hotels and they were jointed by tenants rights advocates, protesting the roll of bank in tenant evictions. one area is the tender line, which chris daly represented for ten years and jointed the protest. >> neighborhood i represented on the board of supervisors for ten years, you could see how

speculators took buildings, where working class people were raising their families, were struggling to get by day-to-day in one of the most expensive places in the country to live. >> the marchers are coming in from the four locations, including the mission district and civic center plaza. they are joining here today in just a little while for a large rally. we're getting reports they're also protesting and gathering outside the wells fargo bank on market street. san francisco police have been following the protesters since 11 am this morning and we haven't received any reports of arrests or vandalisms. we'll have more on today's "occupy" sf at abc-7 news at 11:00. reporting live, on the embarcadero. >> alan: earlier today a coalition of occupiers and housing rights organizations

marched to san francisco's bay view district. the focus of the march was foreclosures. protesters rallied in front of a bank of america branch and presented officials with a list of demand that were faxed to the executive offices. >> the pressure will continue until they are finally forced to leave our communities once and for all. this is an open negotiation. theirs is their opportunity to save whatever face they possibly can with the community because the community ain't having notice more. that's the point. >> in short, they want more affordable housing. according to organizers, the bay view struggle has experienced a high rate of evics and suffers from redder to landlords. >> police officerses infiltrated the "occupy" l.a. encampment the weeks before a raid. more than a dozen undercover officers joined the encampment to determine if they were going to use weapons against the officers. they tried to blend in.

the l.a.p.d. refused to comment on the record and police are downplaying the significance of the undercover work since "occupy" meeting are public and easily tracked. nearly 300 people were arrested on one day in a predawn raid. >> service is back to normal for cal transafter two people were killed on the tracks. the deaths occurred an hour apart this morning. the first just after 11:00 when a man on the tracks was hit at the cal train station in palo alto. the second was north of men -- menlo park when another person was struck. 16 people have been killed on cal trains tracks this year. >> the effort to build a 49er stadium in santa clara. >> plan planners cleared their larger financial obstacle. >> some star athletes are putting a little spark until the

construction could begin as soon as next year. >> opponents of the plan to build a ball park in san jose for the a's have filed a lawsuit to block it. the suit claims the city council had no right to sell the a's on option to buy public land at half market value. the group includes the san jose giants minor league team which has exclusive territorial rights to sap -- san jose. the suit cop contents the action was without voter approval. >> nfl players and alumni are taking part in what has become a bay area holiday tradition. the 17th annual jerry rice toy drive begins collecting toys. people are encouraged to drop off new unwrapped toys and they just might get to meet nfl players like former 49ers brent jones and wide receiver josh morgan. >> last year we donated toys to 25 bay area organizations, and

>> the parents of national guard soldier sean wall-laid their son to rest. the is the 29th member of the california national guard to die in iraq or afghanistan since 9/11. lisa amin gulezian was theres' spoke with his mother. >> the sorrow and the signs were all there. another american soldier has fallen. this time it was 21-year-old sean walsh. >> it's the hardest day of my life. not the worst. but the hardest. >> the worst was november 16th the day the california army national guardsman died after a mortar attack on his base in eastern afghanistan. he and his unit were due home in just two weeks, and it wasn't supposed to be like this. >> sean was a masterpiece. thank you for sharing him with

oak hills funeral home, sean walsh's final resting place in honor of her son, sherrill walsh started the sean walsh k9 memorial fund. her goal is to raise enough money to buy another doing for the santa clara police department's k9 unit. >> right now oaklandlight are detaining five people in connection with a shooting that injured seven people, including a one-year-old boy. he remains in critical condition at children's hospital. his parents retained a patients rights attorney because of a dispute over high -- high his car. he was shot last week. no one has come forward to identify the shooters desspike the fact that the incident took place in a crowded parking lot at 6:00 p.m. >> the oakland police department is hiring and holding its first police academy since the department laid off officers

last year. the ten trainees will begin monday morning, total of 25 positions will be created. four will be filled by rehiring officers already laid off. the mayor's office says the new officers will be stationed near middle schools and their job will be to get to know the kids and make sure they get too and from school safely. >> the president of the state senate is calling for an immediate halt of the policy that forces children to repay their patients' past welfare debts. the department of social services says state law mandates counties first go after adults when speaking a refund of overpaid welfare benefits, then go after anyone in the family who was helped in the case, even children. that policy has led to a lawsuit against the california department of social services. our capital correspondent reports from sacramento.

>> ed needs to stop. >> clarence has never faced a debt collector like this. he received a letter from the welfare office this you're, saying his 14-year-old great-granddaughter, irene, owes nearly 3,000 decide for benefits her mother should not have gotten while pregnant with irene. now irene's current $334 a month government aid is being cut until the debt is paid. >> i never knew that. they go every people and don't pay child support but not children. >> jamie h is now a college student and she got a demand letter to pay back benefits her family received when she was 16 years old. her wages and tax refund are now being garnished. money she needs for school. >> obviously the state's gone out-of-bounds on this. it's just overzealous. >> the western center on law and poverty has filed a lawsuit on behalf of the two girls. it wants the state to stop this practice that has been going on for years.

>> they're allowed to recover from the parents or grandparent if they're part of an assistance unit but there's nothing in state law says you can take money back from a child. >> the california department of social services says it's sensitive to the overpayment issue, but state law mandates that counties first go after the adults associated with the case when seeking a refund of benefits. quote, when those efforts are fully exhausted the county is required to seep reaccumulate from -- recoupement of any member of the case. >> they're supposed to protect the child. why would the state do that to the child? >> the lawsuit wants wants the e to refund money it collected from children for welfare date. often times the overpayments were do to a clerical error in sacramento, abc-7 news. >> san francisco is trying to improve its reputation this holiday season. >> just ahead, the effort to curb bad behavior and make the

>> facebook joins google and twitter in an agreement to a privacy settlement. facebook has been violating the privacy of its users after promising to protect them. >> users can control their privacy settings, but the federal trade commission claims facebook wasn't honoring them or was changing them without notice. >> on numerous occasions it violated privacy commitments to its hundreds of millions of users. the settlement order ensures this should never happen again. >> the ftc says facebook promised not share personal information with advertisers, but it did and also gave third-party publications full

little bit. decreasing. in fact here's a look at our current wind gusts, fairfield, gusts out of north at 37 miles-per-hour. still quite breezy, livermore valley area, the gaps there with gusts to 18 miles-per-hour. san jose, gusts to 12. elsewhere, sitting at 10 miles-per-hour or below, which means we're getting a wind shift. those westerly winds, breezy, winds will redevelop overnight tonight. a cooler wind direction, and also going to mean cooler temperatures for us tomorrow. still holding some mild temperatures right now. san francisco, 63. 60, fairfield. livermore, 60 right now. son jose, 62. and los gatos, 59 degrees. so here's a look at our highlights for the next five days. decreasing wind overnight and that's going to allow temperatures to bottom out. much colder tonight. the possibility of maybe even some inland fog out there. sunny and cool for sunday. and then another windy weather episode will return as we head

into monday and monday night. lows tonight, 40s or 50s buzz, arrest, 30s in extreme north bay locations, 38 for napa. the wind is going to die down, going to be clear and still out there. 49 for san francisco. 30s in concord and antioch. 40 degrees tonight for san jose. lower pressure, high pressure to the northwest, and low pressure to the southeast. helping to bring us that tight wind gradient. this is going to push to the east and that's going to ease our wind pattern. so look for that overnight tonight. the winds decreasing, high pressure in control for at least the next five to seven days so dry weather pattern. another low is going to delve near the sierra, and that is going to return those offshore winds to us as we head into monday and monday night and early tuesday morning so we'll keep you updated. highs for sunday, more of a western wind pattern.
