morning, december 4th, they are investigating a collision that killed a bicyclist only the freeway in burlingame. >> and concord police are searching for whoever is shooting and killing several geese at a pap lore park. >> good sunday morning. widespread 30s and some patchy frost around the bay this morning. sunshine, but much cooler this afternoon. >> good morning to you. good morning to you and thank you for joining us. i'm carolyn tyler. there is an investigation of a crash on highway 101 in burlingame that killed a man who was riding his bicycle on the

freeway. it shut down traffic lanes until early this morning. it was shortly before 11:00 last night when officers arrived and found all northbound lanes blocked at broadway and the man dead at the scene. preliminary reports indicate the unidentified victim was riding a bicycle on the freeway when several vehicles collided and struck him. all northbound lanes were shut down for an investigation that lasted just until 1:00 this morning. that incident caused a major traffic backup but things are now back to normal. some football fans are waking up with bumps and bruises this morning after the railing on a set of bleachers gave way last night. at the end of a high school football championship game at at&t park. this is video we shot seconds after the collapse. the railing apparently gave way under the weight of a surging crowd. some students went over the edge and fell on the players below but there were no serious injuries. police officers had to tell

people still standing on the exposed ledge to move back away from the overhang. we spoke with one student who fell. >> one of the players was like trying to catch me and then i got pushed really hard from the back and there was like no chance that he could have caught me so i just got slammed. >> they set up bleachers on the field so that our team would have a crowd behind them. and they were kind of junkie bleachers, i guess. >> that game wags the city championship playoff between sacred heart and their opponent. mike shumann will have highlights of the game a little later on in sports. a forecast game celebration at the end of big 12 championship game left 13 fans injured, two in critical condition this morning. maybe you saw the rivalry between oklahoma and oklahoma state on abc. as the clock ticked down the

final 20 seconds, thousands of oklahoma state fans dashed on to the field, ripping down the goal posts. officials say some of the injured were crushed in the crowd. others fell from high places to the concrete below. 11 people were taken to local hospitals with everything from sprains to broken bones. two people were treated and released at the stadium. it took police at least 45 minutes to get all those fans off the field. the parents of national guard soldier sean walsh laid their son to rest yesterday in san jose. he is the 29th member of the california national guard to die in iraq or afghanistan 9/11. the 21-year-old walsh died last month after an attack on his base in afghanistan. he was due to come home in two weeks. he wanted a career in law enforcement in the k9 unit for the santa clara police unit. his mom called this the hardest day of her life to bury her only child. >> you touched so many people

and i heard so many wonderful things about you. i'm truly blessed to be your mother and i'm grateful for all the time we had together. >> sean walsh was buried at oak hill funeral home. his mom started a fund to raise money to buy another dog for santa clara's k9 unit. someone is killing ducks in east bay. and also geese. several ducks were pound shot in the park. there have been other incidents in the past month. >> reporter: concord's new hope park has a large population of resident ducks and geese. the police responding to an anonymous tip found several geese shot to death and another one like this one with a wound on its legs. it had trouble walking. and others injured worked hard at swimming across the water. it's a park people make a point to visit, especially to feed and see the birds. >> and shooting them, that's pretty sad, actually.

>> ducks don't bother anybody, right? so, yeah, they just bring pleasure to the kids and the people out there. can't imagine why somebody would be wanting to shoot them. >> the police is also concerned. >> we have received reports in the last couple weeks at different parks in concord of having similar types of incidences. >> last month 8 birds were shot here and others at willow park. the birds were shot with a pellet gun or local better rifle -- a low-caliber rifle or shotgun. >> the fact that our community uses our parks for recreation and trying to escape day-to-day life and then having to come across this while they are trying to enjoy life is very disturbing. >> nicky doesn't understand who would want to shoot these birds. >> it's a horrible person. that person is horrible. it makes me very sad. >> in california cruelty to animals is a felony. it carries a maximum sentence of three years. the police are asking anyone

with information to give them a call. abc7 news. on tuesday the santa rosa city council is set to raise water rates again. residents already pay the highest rates in sonoma county according to the santa rosa press democrat. this increase would be about 6% over the next two years. it's smaller than the 9% annual spike seen over the past decade, but this one hits even the customers who conserve water. most of the increases in the fixed portion of the bill that everyone pays regardless of water use. the average bill is expected to go up from the current $144 per month to $153 by 2013. occupy san francisco held its weekly weekend march yesterday. the topic? banks. >> we are unstoppable. another road is possible! >> they marched down the street

in the financial district and sat down in front of a chase bank. the group is targeting banks that they say are stifling the 99%'s ability to live, work and raise a family in san francisco. earlier yesterday a coalition of occupiers and housing rights organizations marched to san francisco's bay view district. the focus of the march, foreclosures. according to organizers the bay view has experienced a high rate of evictions and suffers from predatory landlords. coming up next, former penn state football coach jerry sandusky speaks out on his first camera interview since indicted on sex abuse charges. and that is herman cain calling it quits.

good morning, san jose. it's 35 degrees. so we are looking at still temperatures dropping for the next hour or two. so hopefully you brought in the plants and it's going to be slow to warm up today and the next several days as much cooler air has invaded the bay area. 22 degrees colder this morning than you were yesterday morning up in santa rosa. napa, 21 degrees colder. hayward 16 degrees colder. you were 67 degrees yesterday. so it did warm up in the afternoon. it was a beautiful day. we are going to shave off another five degrees from those afternoon highs. so patchy frost this morning. sunny and cooler today. the gusty winds return. high fire danger for the north bay mountains with the off short winds returning after midnight tonight right on through about 9:00 monday morning. and here is why. you see the dark area? this is a big ridge of high pressure and every weather system that wants to only our

way, we are being protected by it and they deflect over to the east of it. that is coming straight down from canada. those winds, usually north or northeastly, bring the gusty event. they get channeled threw some of the passes, the canyons, and also they bring down the relative humidity. the air mass extremely dry. we will be looking at temperatures cooler than we had. with all the winds the atmosphere was well mixed and the warmer air brought to the surface. but this is coming from canada, the next flow. we will see a due south movement from the cool air all the way down into northern and southern california. so the dry weather continues, the wind tonight into tomorrow. and we will be looking at a lot of sunshine, though, in between. in terms of high temperatures, a little warmer today in the northern sierra. 41. 50 in the southern sierra with mild temperatures and the wind returns in southern california. so we are talking high fire danger. northeast winds 20 to 30 miles an hour. north bay mountains tonight, 62

retirees collecting at least $100,000 other year. our media department analyzed new figures covering the past two years. some city workers take ten percent salary cuts to close yearly budget gaps and others have been taking advantage of sweetheart retirement deals. one in three retired police officers and firefighters receive at least $100,000 a year. that figure was one in five just few years ago. some get automatic cost of living increases above the inflation rate, getting paid more in retirement than when they were working. collisions between cars and deer along interstate 280 have become a focus for researchers at uc davis. the most recent accident last september killed a driver near stanford university. now state game wardens have started the process of tracking deer along 280 between belmont and woodside.

we have details on the effort. >> reporter: from dawn to dusk, kristen and her team have been tracking deal. >> it looks incredibly like hunting but it is a tranquilizer dart gun and it delivers a flying syringe. >> reporter: and as the day winds down, this doe is their final capture. she gets a check by a vet and a collar installed, which is key to their work. >> transmissions are sent to the satellite every two hours. you get a step by step route of where it is heading to, where it's been, what happen at that time it is using and when it's crossing the highway. >> this capture and collar project is a joint effort by many state agencies, including caltran, which identified 280 as especially dangerous. >> there are more than 200 deer on this highway being killed by motorists. which means there's more than a potential of more than a hundred people being killed on the highway. >> of course, to gather the data the team needs to take great

care with each deer they catch. that's the job of department and game veterinarian, pam swift. they gather all kinds of information. >> some of the deer maybe don't even cross the freeway. we don't no such about the deer in this area. >> once the data is collected in this 18 month study, solutions, like a possible deer crossing uni280 can be made. she monitors vital signs and then gives her an injection to help wake her up. >> she's been tagged, got a quick physical and you see the radio tracking device has already been installed. for this point we are waiting for her to wake up and run off. >> after about a half-hour the deer comes out of her stooper wearing the collar that will transmit data for about six months. then slowly she walks off. along 280 near san mateo, abc7 news. california kids are out of shape and some of the most unfit kids live in san francisco. according to a new study published by the los angeles times, fewer than one-third of california middle school

you like the kind of dry pattern, you are in luck because it will stick around. we will see a return to the wind overnight in some spots. the official sunrise, isn't that pretty? 7:09. the clear skies and a couple of high clouds. with that dry air mass in place, boy, did temperatures drop. they continue to drop with just 34 degrees in mountain view this morning. it's 35 in san jose. good morning, napa. 30 for you. 33 in santa rosa. even here by the water, 44 in oakland. we started out when i came in this morning it was 51 in san francisco. 48 right now. mid-30s in the livermore valley. so that dry air mass in place and that wind is gone. look how much colder it is from yesterday morning. 9 degrees colder in oakland, even san francisco 7 degrees colder. but you get further out from the water, and my goodness, 22 degrees colder in santa rosa with some of those protected valleys definitely seeing some

of the patchy frost this morning. it won't only be this morning, we will be back to that this morning. although the winds will kick up in some parts of the day area tonight. this afternoon sunny and cooler and the wind advisory overnight for the north bay mountains where we are looking at dry relative humidity and a return to those northerly gusty winds. not as windy, though. talking 20 to 30 miles an hour winds instead of the 50 miles an hour winds. only place for the incoming storm systems to go is up and over the big ridge of high pressure which is anchored over the pacific. you see it here. weak trough after trough continues to come on down. now from the gulf of alaska. as it does it shoots over the side of the ridge and that's when we get the down-sloping winds, the offshore winds and some of the gusty areas, as well. this pattern will remain in place not only tomorrow, all week long. the winds, though, should ease up by the late morning tomorrow.

we have more tsunamis here that do more damage than any other harbor on the west coast. >> in march waves crashed into the harbor from the tsunami in japan and ripped it apart. a bystander shot this video as boats broke free from their moorings and collided, dragging pieces of docks that were already cracked and weakened from another tsunami in 2006. >> it took the damaged docks and swirled around like a big mix-master and shattered them all over the place. we had docks and boats all piled up in the far corner. there were like twelve or fourteen boats sunk, maybe more. >> harbor commissioner, pat bailey, showed us what is left of those boats after three months of the bottom of the harbor. >> into the dumpsters they will go. there's very little you can salvage out of them. >> now on a barge, a giant excavator is working to dredge up the 90,000 cubic feet of sand the tsunami brought in, making it too shallow for boats. one scoop at a time, the work is slow and the deadline tight. >> usually at this time every year the entire parking lot starts to fill up with crabbing

baskets. >> to mayor charles, those crab pots mean jobs. the season is about to start and the fishing industry makes up more than a third of crescent city's economy. >> if we miss this season, it would be absolutely critical. if the harbor coughs, the city sneezes and the county shivers. this is a fishing harbor and it's very critical we keep it a fishing harbor. >> so he picked up the phone and asked for a big favor. this is what he got. old, creeky wood that came all the way from san francisco. call is serendipity that san francisco was remodeling its west marina and gave them their old docks for free. >> turns out they fit very well here and we are tieing boats up to them as we speak. even with new temporary docks replacing some of the old broken ones, the harbor is designed for more 200 boats will only fit about 80. that takes care of the local fishing fleet, but for the
