good evening, thank you for joining us. >> about 200 workers in berkeley are being fired this holiday season, not because of the economy but because of what advocates are calling a silent raid by federal agents. live outside of pacific steel foundry where they are being fired. >> the silent raids they are called is audits carried out by customs and enforcement agency on companies. they go into the books of these companies and they compare employee documents see if they match up with valid social security documents. about third employees were flagged, now the employees are trying to figure out what to do now they've been let go. >> a steaming bowl and table

full of food is what should be a celebration at the church but this is show of support for immigrant workers that have been fired by pacific style. >> kicking them to the curb before christmas is an act of hostility. >> among those who have been fired, one who has been with the company for 21 years. >> he says he was told he is no longer eligible to work at the company. david has been with pacific steel for 12 years and has two weeks to get his documents in odd. leaving the country is not an option. >> for us it's practically impossible. it's impossible to go back to mexico. going to mexico is no good. >> he has three children who were born in the u.s. he is the major reason why he will stay in the bay area. his 14-year-old daughter worries about having to leave.

>> i've never been to mexico, i've only been there when i was baby so i have no memories whatsoever. >> a spokesperson for pacific steel say they followed all the rules when it comes to hiring workers, but these new audits pushed the company into a tough spot. >> we feel very sad for the employees that we had to terminate them. it was not company's choice to do that. >> reporter: for the company it's been a challenge to replace so many employees. >> now, we did contact customs enforcement about this audit and they don't comment on them when there is no criminal action taken. they did share, however, they use this strategy. so far this year there have been 2500 companies audited across the country and they have filed charges against 221 employers and managers.

investigators want to find out what started a fire that killed a man in east oakland this morning. fire broke outside a home on 79th avenue about 7:40. took ten points in put the out the fire. they found the 55-year-old victim's body inside a room he rented from a landlord. >> there are no signs of foul play. >> at this time we wanted to make sure to get the body out of here. there is family we need to contact. >> the flames did not spread but it damaged other parts of the home. >> san pablo were cleaned up after a busted water main washed away the earth causing a huge sinkhole to open up near interstate 80. it starred when the water main

broke yesterday morning. millions of gallons of water spilled out and a foot and a half of water flooded the homes. >> they are cleaning all the damage. >> the huge sinkhole exposed an oil pipeline that ran past a shell station. pipeline's owner shut it off and drained it as a safety precaution. >> there are a lot of hungry families in the bay area as more than 160 national guard members are returning home. they are homecoming at oakland international is where lilian kim is tonight. >> it was happy homecoming, friends, family and military veterans were here to give them a warm welcome home.

>> eight soldiers of the california national guard 870th military police company arrived about an hour and a half ago. they are based in pittsburg and has been serving in iraq afghanistan since february. for many this was their third and fourth deployment. they have seen not seen their children since back in june. >> she understands me more, that is kind of weird. >> she is different? >> she is a like a little princess. >> we're in california. >> what are you looking forward to doing? >> -- oh, my gosh, i don't on know where to start. i wanted to eat. that is for sure. >> the soldiers plan to go back to the full time civilian jobs after their military

responsibilities which consist of one week back home, they won't have report for that until 90 days from now. lilian kim, "abc 7 news." meanwhile, there was little fanfare as the last u.s. combat troops pulled out of iraq overnight. part of convoy that made a midnight run for the border. >> it was just before sundown in southern iraq when the troops made final preparations for the mission that would be the last for u.s. military forces here. there were more than 100 vehicles and nearly 500 soldiers anxious in so many ways to make history. >> what are your feelings as the sun sets on the last day in iraq? >> i don't think there is any words can describe it. >> i'm very proud what we've been a able to accomplish. it's nice to be going home.

>> reporter: at the very front the of this convoy will be clearing vehicles, they will be looking for roadside bombs like any patrol because this is the last convoy out it doesn't mean it's not dangerous here. >> which is why the mission was in pitch darkness. soldiers loaded up for the more than a hundred mile journey to the border. was slowgoing in these massive trucks. four and a half hours later, we arrive. out of iraq for the last time. >> i don't think it has sunk in yet. >> i'm glad we're done with this and we're going home. >> to the rising sun in kuwait. >> most of troops will be returning to the u.s. this week just in time for the holidays. >> our facebook page there is

of coastal villages into muddy areas of sand. 45,000 have been left homeless and half a million are without running water. >> house republican leaders cast doubts on whether congress will meet a deadline for extending unemployment payments. they approved a bill that would extend for two months but house speaker john boehner made it clear this morning it's not good enough. >> i believe that two months is kicking the can down the road. the american people are tired of that. frankly i'm tired. on the house side we've seen this action before coming out of the senate. it's time to just stop, do our work, resolve the differences and extend it for one year. >> tax cuts will expire on december 31 unless the house and senate can reach a compromise. >> two weeks to go before the iowa caucuses, presidential race is shifting in high gear

>> busy day at the world market in the evergreen district in san jose. they opened the doors for the first time today. it features food and produce from all on over the world and already helping to lift the local economy. >> the blight of our buildings

in the area and they have renovated and hired 200 workers which is huge for people that didn't have jobs are now working at the supermarket today. >> those new jobs will help the economy. we'll explore ways to further improve the situation. join us to the road to recovery right after the news at 6:00. >> the economy has taken a bite. an estimated 9,000 needy kids lined up for the 25th annual holiday party put on by union community resources. the problem is there were more kids than toys. >> i think the economy is hard, people are hurting, people are losing their homes. a lot of people here have lost their jobs. that is why they are here. that is why the turnout is so great. when the need is greatest, people are least able to respond. >> an estimated 3,000 kids

received only an encouraging word from santa today. they enjoyed games and face painting but they did not receive a gift. >> u.s. marines helped a lot of kids, they accepted donations for the toys for tots programs outside the coliseum where the raiders hosted detroit this afternoon. some fans brought brand-new toys. >> nice chilly weather out there but not too chilly. >> but how many layers. >> temperatures in some places only in the low 50s. you can see for yourself, high definition east bay camera, if you look over the bay. you see the low clouds sitting near the coast. we had very stubborn fog and didn't see a lot of clearing until late.

temperature-wise, temperatures kept down in the 50s. it's already 49 degrees in santa rosa, novato 48. we have 46 in napa. 52 in redwood city. livermore, is at 48 degrees and 50 in antioch. here is a look at highlights for the next few days. low clouds and valley fog will be with us tonight. also tonight is another spare the air night. a little burning and extend that through monday, as well. by monday night a little bit of relief as the wind will pick up. offshore winds will be us and scour out some of that central valley fog. close-up is satellite shot. you can see the fog make its way toward the east. it cleared out late this afternoon but will reform late this evening.

it's bringing a little drizzle near the coast but not as cold as last night. temperatures in the north bay, nationwide low 30s. 40s around the coast as well as san francisco. look for mid to upper 30s in the east bay. high pressure still in control but we're going watch this low start to make its way down the spine of the sierra. counterclockwise and that is going to settle us up for offshore breezes as we head into monday night and tuesday. basically that is going to help scour out some of that fog. it may push it a little closer to san francisco bay area. there is a little bit of good travel news for those beginning early holiday travel monday and tuesday. low clouds and fog that will be with us tomorrow morning. then it starts to burn off as offshore winds start to shifted a bit and started to clear out. if you are traveling tomorrow, expect the rain to move on out.

57 for los angeles. we'll continue with that fresno in fog. temperatures around the bay area we may come up a few degrees tomorrow inch. 58 for san jose. at the coast. 57 for redwood city. san francisco, 57 degrees. in the north bay, temperatures in the mid to upper 50s, as well. 58 for sonoma. oakland at some time, 59. 57 castro valley. imperial east bay, concord, brentwood, mid to upper 50s there. 56 for antioch. we'll look for 54 tomorrow, cool day for carmel. seven-day forecast, breezy monday night and tuesday. winter like wednesday night but still going to keep it dry this week. you heard from the moans from the sports department.
