out what caused a chemical smell on campus. firefighters are on the scene now. they believe some sort of leak at latimer hall triggered a fire sprinkler this afternoon. the building houses the chemistry department. >> now the story of an amazing gift, the gift of life. at least six people have the chance to celebrate many more holidays with friends and families because of this young man's decision to give. here's the story. >> we know one man is recovering at the hospital right now after a six-hour transplant operation. he is one of several people who received an organ from charles butler, jr. exporntion this christmas, butler's family and friends are celebrating his young life and his gift of life to others. >> at praise fellowship bible church in richmond, part of the christmas service was dedicated to charles butler, jr. >> i don't flow if you recognize him, charles is a founding

member of this church. [applause] >> he had just been awarded his merchant marine passport and was about to start his first assignment. this is video of butler when he started a maritime training program a few months ago. >> where do you see yourself in three years? >> on a boat, traveling the world. >> it was part of a tearful tribute at butler's church. he was killed before he could get his grade situation certificate for the church-sponsored program so his parents were awarded the certificate at a short ceremony. >> present this to you from the program. >> but this outpouring of emotion is part of the honor this 23-year-old is receiving. last week, butler was killed a few yards from his home. his family says he was shot to death while driving by people he never even met. charles butler, jr. is an organ donor, and this christmas, daniel murphy is a recipient of butler's liver. >> it's starting to really hit

home, and i'm just really thankful for the family. >> butler's family is still struggling with not having him around at christmas, but his gift of life is helping them through their loss. >> we know that him bag doctor nor, a part of him is running errand everywhere, and i would like to meet the recipients so i can see charles again. >> in addition to daniel murphy's operation today, charlie butler's sisters tell me fire more of his organs were matched to other recipients and the operations were carried out today. a very big got six families this christmas. >> thank you for that story. some 5,000 people enjoyed holiday meals today at glide memorial church in san francisco. the number includes those who took partner annual christmas breakfast as well as the prime rib lunch. a lot of people look forward to the event all year long. the house of prime rib restaurant donated 2,000 pounds of food to the effort. >> this event in richmond is the realization of a college

student's vision. ripped native burgundy spears started christmas in richmond six years ago when she was sophomore at howard university in washington, dc. this year she and her family and friends provided meals, gifts, and clothing to almost 700 people in their communities. >> an army sergeant sent home early from afghan wanted to surprise her mom on christmas day and invited us along. >> oh, my god. >> i'd say that worked out. tawnya sharkey came home earlier than expected and has been in town for a few days and didn't tell her mom until lunchtime. >> went on facebook the other day, and this is the best christmas i ever had. wow. >> tawnya sent us some pictures from her time in afghanistan. she was part of the 352nd

352nd combat support and treated troops and locals. tanya says she and her group changed the lives of people there and that after 13 years of serving her country, she is ready to begin a new faces of her life. >> president obama called 10 service members this weekend to wish them a merry christmas and thank them for their service. the white house released this photo of the president making one 0 of those calls last night. the calls are part of the a tradition in which the president calls two members of each branch of the military. >> the nba season started today, and the golden state warriors will be playing in justifies over an hour. we're live at oracle arena in oakland with the anticipation. john? >> basketball is back and the warriors are making it a festive occasion. what says nba basketball more than reindeer and santa. fans petting and saying hi to

reindeer before the go into the game. fans started showing up before 5:00 and plunking down christmas money in the team store. they have been deprived of seeing the warriors and pro basketball throughout the fall. the lockout started in july, and left fans without an nba season for the past two months. cost a lot of money for people who rely on the nba, like vendors and bar and restaurant owners and employees. everyone is glad to get the season and the dollars going again. >> i love it. finally started they were age to get things together and decide and agree upon some things, because everybody is missing out because they couldn't agree. >> it's good to be back, you know. anytime you're working and making money, during this economy, the way things are, it's good to be back. put some money in your pocket. >> so now the season will run only 66 games instead of the usual 82 games. it will wrap up on april 26th

>> an explosion during christmas mass in a church near nigeria's capital killed 39 people. a second explosion happened later. the blast comes during a series of sectarian attacks. authorities acknowledge they couldn't bring enough emergency medical personnel to care for the wounded. >> the white house is condemning that attack, calling it senseless. usual officials have been in touch with their counterparts in nigeria-promising to help bring those responsibility to justice. >> pope benedict didn't mention the attacks during this annual christmas address but the vatican called the violence a sign of blind hatred and called for peace in the middle east, praying for an end to the violence in syria and for resumption of talks between the israelis and palestinians, and then delivered christmas greetings in 56 different -- 65 different languages, much to the delight of those gathered in

>> a sacked to based web designer is trying to spread holiday cheer to people spending time at work instead of with loved ones. he started a campaign called the cookie project. here's more.

>> they're spreading holiday cheer this christmas day. >> locally we made about 600 or 700 cookies, giving them to people that work. >> armed with a bag of homemade cookies, john and his army of volunteer fanned out across sacramento, visiting businesses open on this holiday. >> people that are working in nonessential services that are forced to work on christmas. >> think of the businesses open 365 days a year, chances are one of them is here. >> we're giving away bags of cookies to people who have to work on christmas. >> they started the project this year. volunteers signed up to bake, bag, and deliver cookies to those who work december 25th. employees at coffee shops, fast food restaurants, drug stores, and they want to deliver a message to the big bosses. >> places are open to make an extra buck and see what business is like christmas day. >> the people who made the decision they were going to stay open on christmas are at home with their families on

lots of sunshine. a little haze out there with a "spare the air" day, which is still in effect through this evening. taking a look at the sutro cam. nice shot of the city. beautiful out there. if you have plans, temperatures not too bad. we're in the 40s and 50s most areas. oakland at 5 # degrees. conword, you're at 45. mountain view, 44 degrees. san jose, 48. not as cold tonight. more of an onshore flow and cloud cover, keeping temperatures up. this morning, downright chilly. napa, 26. 30 tomorrow morning. so an onshore breeze throughout the day today, and for most of this week, little more moisture moving in. a chance for rain tuesday evening into wednesday. as this ridge of high pressure finally begins to break down a little bit, talking about a dry month of december, only .13 of an inch so far in san francisco. usually we get more than three inches about average. so very dry conditions for december for sure.

a few showers way up to the north. as we take a look at the forecast, here's what i'm expecting. monday, a few clouds. nothing much going on. watch, by tuesday afternoon, tuesday evening, the i system approaches us, most will stay well to the north. a few scattered showers possible in the north bay. not a big system to say the least so we're expecting scattered showers for the most part. not as cold tonight with lots of 30s for overnight lows, "spare the air" this evening but not in effect for your monday. so, your temperatures on monday, kind of like today, upper 50s to right around 60 degrees. most areas with sunshine and a few high clouds throughout the day. otherwise looks like a great day all around, and just like today was beautiful. 60y palo alto. mountain view, 61. your high tomorrow, san francisco, 55. and the lower 50s along the coast. a little cooler with that onshore flow switching on throughout the day tomorrow, and patchy fog possible as well as

that marine layer thickens up just a little bit throughout the day tomorrow. 57, san leandro. 58 in union city. out toward the east, 60 in livermore and pleasanton. very nice conditions, especially around monterey bay, temperatures in the upper 50s. , low low 60s. the seven-day forecast, again, looks pretty good, straight chance for scattered showers wednesday, tuesday night into wednesday, and again on thursday. not a big storm system at all. just light rain, possible, mainly in the north bay. keeping our fingers crossed because it's been a dry, rainy season. >> take anything we can get. thank you, jeff. rick is in for shu. getting ready to watch the warriors. >> been a busy day in the nba and not over yet in just about an hour from now the warriors tip off at home against the new-look l.a. clippers. a gametime decision but don't be surprised if golden state has to play without steph curry who has

a sprained ankle. the warriors dom nighted the clipperses a home but this is a different team now that it has chris paul and blake griffin. the team will mark the debut of mark jackson. he can't wait to get the season started. >> a lot of excitement. obviously. you get a dynamic player like chris paul in a trade, certainly makes you the talk of the town. so it's an exciting time. a lot of people are anticipating great things from both teams. that's as far as it goes. i think it's going to be a great opportunity for us to play against a team that's going to create some challenges to our defense come christmas night, and we're looking forward to it. >> the lakers did not get chris paul but as long as they have kobe bryant they're going to contend. he scored 28 despite a torn ligament in this right wrist. 1:00 to play.
