dangerous to waterways and birds so today in san jose, retailers are banned from using them. in san jose, plastic bags or free paper bags are no longer an option at the checkout stand. the new ordinance is meeting with mixed reviews from residents. >> i think it's a good thing. i ride a motorcycle, and i can't tell you how many time i had to dodge bags floating along the freeway. >> i used plastic bags my while life. i think it stinks. >> the ordinance bans retailersol using plastic bags, unlike the ordinance in san francisco, which is aimed at larger retail chain owners, and san jose residents will also be charged ten cents to use a paper bag. >> i use the self-checkout. but they have an option where you can push, no bag, and if you're going to use a bag, they're going to charge you. >> the charge for paper bags is intended to steer customers

towards reusable bags but some shoppers decided not to use a bag at all. >> i guess the law came into effect, bring your own bag, but i happened to leave my bag in the vehicle. and, yeah, probably right. i don't want to pay the ten cents. >> a ban that california grocers association is not jazzed up about but in their words, it's workable. they say they san jose plastic bag ban is modeled after state legislation they supported last year. it's fair because all retailers are affected and the 10-cent charge per paper bag is different than san francisco which had minimal environmental impact. >> grocery store operators shifted from plastic to paper. >> now, this ban actually poses an interesting situation for the westfield valley fair mall because about two-thirds of the stores in the mall are in san jose, and the rest nor santa

clara. so, mall management is actually asking all stores in the mall to adhere to this ban just to make things more simple for all the shoppers. reporting live in san jose, abc-7 news. >> a similar law went into effect none incorporated parts of marin county. the ban does not apply to these clear plastic bags used for things like produce and meats. >> there are a number of new state laws that went into effect today. a change to california's child passenger safety seat law now requires c. to ride in either a car seat or booster seat until the age of eight or reach a height of 4'9". tanning is also on the new law list. anyone under the age of 18 is banned from using indoor tanning beds even with parental permission. >> actress bo derek helped pass a ban on shark fin soon.
