for the field of republican presidential candidates. next week's primary might be the last chance to stop mitt romney. >> he's celebrating a 16-point victory in the new hampshire primary, taking 39% of the vote, followed by ron paul and then jon huntsman. >> romney delivering a tough new message in his speech last night. t.j. winick is live in manchester with the details. good morning, t.j. >> reporter: rob and paula, good morning to you. that's right. the night went pretty much as expected here in new hampshire. the next primary is being seen as make or break for several candidates. mitt romney is on a roll. the first republican since 1976 to win both the iowa caucus and now the new hampshire primary. >> thank you, new hampshire. tonight we made history! >> reporter: the former massachusetts governor was gracious. but he didn't back down from recent attacks on his work as a venture capitalist. >> president obama wants to put

free enterprise on trial. we have seen desperate republicans join forces with him in the last few days. >> reporter: almost half of the voters on tuesday identified themselves as independents. ron paul had a second place finish. >> there was another victory tonight. he had a victory, but we have had a victory for the cause of liberty tonight. >> reporter: jon huntsman experienced a recent surge of support. it was only good for third place. >> i say third place is a ticket to ride, ladies and gentlemen. >> reporter: rick santorum and newt gingrich tied for fourth place, with just 9% of the vote each. their messages inspiring only small, passionate groups here. in the granite state. >> we have a message that can appeal, not just in south carolina, but across this nation. >> reporter: rick perry is already campaigning in south carolina. he finished with 1% of the new hamp >> if you all will have my back on january 21st, i'll have your back for the next four years in

washington, d.c. >> reporter: the other candidates have long seen south carolina as a fire wall for mitt romney. that because if he does win a third straight victory, there may be no stopping his march to the nomination. rob and paula? >> what is the thought out there in terms of whether ron paul is in this thing for the long haul or not? >> reporter: well, you know, rob, i mean, ron paul certainly has energetic, young supporters who will follow him anywhere. his libertarian message has struck a chord are many voters across the country. he does seem to hit a threshold in each of these states that he's running in. if other candidates, like santorum or perry pull out along the way and paul stays in, he'll hit an electoral ceiling. that may make him a player at the convention. but i wouldn't expect we're calling him mr. president a year from now. >> fair enough.

all right, t.j. winick with the recap live for us this morning, from manchester. thanks, t.j. a few other stories that caught our attention. jon huntsman has some work to do in south carolina. in a new poll, he trails stephen colbert. >> colbert is not officially on the ballot, but he's still getting 5%, which is better than huntsman's 4%. >> incomprehensible. hours before sealing the deal in new hampshire, mitt romney went to the movies with his grandkids. some saw "mission impossible" and some saw "the muppets." and mitt romney says today he goes back to work. we'll ask him about the next hurdle, south carolina, later on "good morning america." the president is focusing on job creation today. by highlighting companies that have brought jobs back to the u.s. mr. obama will be joined at the white house by more than a dozen business leaders who have returned jobs to america recently. it's a move to shore up his

union support, which is considered vital for his re-election. for the second time this week, the u.s. navy has come to the rescue of iranian sailors in the persian gulf. six iranians were rescued from the boat. they were treated and turned over to the iranian coast guard. the rescues come amid increased tensions between iran and the u.s. and another story developing overnight in iran. a young nuclear scientist has been killed in a bomb attack. assailants on a motorcycle stuck the bomb on the side of a university professor's car. the attack strongly resembles killings of other scientists working on the nuclear program. israel and the united states have denied involvement in the string of attacks. the search for a missing montana teacher may shift gears today. investigators looking sherry shy arnold say they have exhausted

the possibilities in the area where she was last seen. instead, they may go door to door. the only clue found so far is her single running shoe. and there's no new evidence in the case of actress natalie wood, who died back in 1981. police in november reopened the investigation into her death. she disappeared from a boat she was on with her husband, robert wagner, and actor christopher walken. now they say they have uncovered nothing new that would suggest any foul play was at work. good news in louisiana. it's drying out today after some areas got up to four inches of rain. the drenching downpours flooded roads and stranded cars. ironically, a city named rayne, that's spelled r-a-y-n-e, got so much of it, they couldn't even leave their homes. now for a look at the weather across the country. nashville and cincinnati with rain. the heaviest is later on in georgia, florida, and the carolinas.

hundreds of protesters streamed back into new york's zuccotti park last night after the barricades there were taken down. some demonstrators vowed to spend the night. but sleeping bags and tents have been banned from the park. since an early morning police raid made the protesters leave in early november. the head of fannie mae is stepping down. ceo michael williams says he'll leave as soon as there is a replacement. his counterpart at freddie mac is also leaving. they've been under heavy criticism for their multimillion dollar bonuses and salaries.

bank failures were down 41% last year. regulators had to close just 92 in 2011, compared to 157 the year before. that was the most in any year since the recession began. so far this year, there haven't been any bank failures. good to hear. >> let's hope that trend continues. the auto industry says sales remain in high gear so far in the new year. executives at the north american auto show in detroit say the continuing success is the result of a stronger economy, more consumer confidence, and also pent-up demand. small and mid-sized models are doing the best. and ford's long-neglected luxury name plate is getting attention. the lincoln mkz sedan was unveiled yesterday at the auto show. it goes on sale this fall. the first of seven new models scheduled for the next few years. overseas markets are up on good news from the united states and france. tokyo's nikkei average rose 26 points today. hong kong's hang seng gained 148 points. in london, the ftse opened higher. on wall street, the dow was up
