making news this morning. a race against time. >> the critical mission for rescuers for that crippled cruise liner. passengers still unaccounted for. a big announcement from the scene overnight. >> we're live in italy. and it's over. today, jon huntsman will end his quest for the presidency. a jolt to the race just days before that all-important road to south carolina. we'll tell you who benefits the most. the golden globes, the winners, the dresses and the hosts who will say just about anything. good monday morning, everybody. i'm rob nelson. >> and i'm paula faris. at least six victims have been

pulled from that partially sunken ocean liner. >> the ship's owner issued a statement overnight saying the captains made significant errors overnight going too close to the coast. lama hasan joins us from porto santo stefano. lama, another still unaccounted for? >> reporter: good morning, rob. yes, i think they just don't know where the unaccounted for people are. i mean, they're going to keep with the search that they're conducting right now. they don't know if these unaccounted people are either still on the ship or if they're staying with people on the island of giglio which is very close to where the rescue is. don't forget, when people sank, many of the locals provided them with shelter. they took them in. as i said, rescuers going with the search and recovery efforts.

we spoke to say team at the scene who told us they're going to do whatever it takes so everyone accounted for is found at the moment. the number missing 16, two of them are american passengers, rob. >> lama, whether or not there are survivors of the 16 remaining, we are going on 72 hours, we are hearing incredible and brave stories of survival, people who have escaped? >> reporter: oh, absolutely, yes. we are hearing all the stories. people comparing it to the "titanic." this is a massive operation. the italian coast guard, scuba divers, rescuers. they're using sophisticated equipment to try to find the other survivors, those who we mentioned, those who are still unaccounted for. it's also a very difficult task for them, you can just tell by looking at the wreckage, it's lying on its side. all of it submerged in water. in fact, there's a lot of debris that they have to wade through and it's a massive vessel. rescuers say they still haven't

finished searching a part of the ship but it is still ongoing and they're going to keep up with the search and recovery mission. >> lama, of course, the central figure in all of this is the captain of the ship, what he did or did not do that could have made all the difference with him. what's the latest with him? >> reporter: absolutely. essentially, the captain is being blamed for the incident and the neglect. owners of the cruise liner issued a statement, they said, the captain committed a certification error in judgment which had serious consequences. it was following too close to the shore and it was his decision in dealing with the emergency did not follow the costa cruise line, which is the owners of the cruise liner. he has been detained and faces possible charges of manslaughter and abandoning the ship. he's still being investigated. rob and paula, back to you. >> questions surrounding him. rightfully so. >> abc's lama hasan live in italy. thank you for the report. the american embassy in rome

says 118 of the 120 americans aboard the "costa concordia" have now been accounted for, but still missing, though, is a couple from minnesota. >> the survives are already starting to make their way home. geanette trumbull is waiting for her parents. >> i just want to see all the joy in their face. >> trumbull says she's been talking with her mother and father online. they appear to be fine but they are praying for those who lost loved ones. we'll have much more from italy later on "good morning america." >> the stunning picture of that ship. all right, the other big story this morning is the major shake-up in the race for president. >> just days ahead of the south carolina primary, jon huntsman is calling it quits. this is certain to add to the romney cam to the romney campaign. abc's tahman bradley is joining us from washington with more. good morning. >> good morning, paula and rob. the campaign of jon huntsman the former ambassador under president obama never picked up

steam. now huntsman is exiting the race and endorsing a man he loved to bash. >> reporter: mitt romney starts the final week of campaigning in south carolina with a boost. later today, jon huntsman will drop out of the race and endorse romney. just a week ago, he implied the former massachusetts governor lacked a core. >> he has not given us reason to trust him. >> reporter: even after a disappointing third place finish in new hampshire, huntsman had pledged to keep going, but south carolina polls show him in the single digits. overnight, a spokesman told abc news the candidate does not want to stand in romney's que. >> corporate races led by mitt romney. >> reporter: they're not ready to step aside, they have unrelenting attacks hoping to slow the governor's marks for nomination. >> governor romney's record on the economy, obviously, romney care is a real scarlet letter here. >> mitt romney as governor

in washington got under way yesterday on king's actual birthday. dr. king's oldest son, martin luther king iii was among the speakers. and president obama and the rest of the first family also observed what would have been dr. king's 83rd birthday. they attended a worship service at washington's historic zion baptist church and today attend the let freedom ring celebration at the kennedy center. >> an important day to remember the man and the message. yes. time to look at weather across the country. heavy snow in the cascades and colorado rockies. a half foot in the mounts of wyoming and montana. a few more flakes in seattle. the morning showers in southern california. also for dallas, little rock, memphis, chicago, detroit and pittsburgh. >> 74 in sunny miami. kansas city gets up to 53. chicago, 41. fargo and billings barely climb out of the single digits. 31 in boise and 51 in sacramento. it was an exciting week for

hong kong's hang seng lost 192. in london the ftse opened lower. on wall street, the markets are closed today. the dow gained 62 points, nasdaq index was up 36. and much of the worry about europe centers on greece. german officials are meeting with greece. the goal is to minimize the damage from a debt default. both to greece and europe as the whole. the greek government and the greek government sand private lenders will meet wednesday to discuss the country. gas prices are normally high this month. they usually back off in january but not this year. in fact, gas prices have risen 11 cents just since new year's. aaa blamed high crude oil prices and the repeal of the ethanol tax credit. the auto club is predicting a tumultuous year for all drivers. and apparently, there's good money in "contraband." the new action film started box office honors this week with a stronger than expected debut.
