>> in the news this saturday morning, january 21st, some badly-needed rain hits the bay area in the first big storm of the year. san francisco police arrest occupy protestors after they occupied a former hotel. >> good morning, everyone, i'm terry mcsweeney. the big story today, weather. we have rain, snow, wind, et cetera, and for all of that here is lisa.

>> things really have quieted down in the past hour or so. here's a live look at doppler hd. you will notice we have a light smattering of showers, mist and drizzle. a look at east bay. rain in berkeley and almeda. this little cell will continue to slide to the south and east. definitely the roads are wet. look at the south bay, milpitas and down toward saratoga, not too bad over there. here's the loop the past three, four hours. notice how quickly the rain continues to slide into the central valley. we still have some snow going in the sierra nevada. it's 34 degrees right now at lake tahoe. rainfall totals anywhere from six inches in ben loman to 6.6 in san jose over the past 24 hours. temperatures are mild, in the 40s and 50s. and the winds continue to be a problem. we will definitely see things calm down today, but then starting back up again tomorrow. stay tuned for my extended outlook coming up.

>> all right, lisa. the first big rain of 2012 welcomed by a lot of people, but not by all drivers. no huge problems to report this morning but there have been some flooded streets, downed trees and scattered power outages. we have more. >> we knew it was just a matter of time before the rain returned to the bay area and made rivers out of some north bay streets. >> it's great. we need it. >> everyplace is dried out so now it's time to get more rain and fill up. we need it. >> but it can be a pain if you have to be out in it. >> i came from sacramento today. it took me 3 1/2 hours to get to san rafael. >> a drive he can normally do it in an hour and a half. >> it's ridiculous. it's pouring and flooded and accidents everywhere. >> whiskey counted six during his trip. cars in fields, ditches, a slow commute all around. after all, it is the first good rain we've seen in a while, which for some was good for business. >> there was more work available because it was dry, i would say.

>> daniel dahl is in construction. he ventured out on a milk run for his toddler. others were shopping for good fun indoors. >> a bottle of wine and movies and a bag of potato chips. >> i will stay in today. >> in san rafael, abc7 news. >> in mill valley fire crews rushed to fill sandbags last night to prevent damage to local businesses. the fire chief said the rain came down so quickly it caused flooding outside joe's taco and the 2 a.m. club, an area known for flooding. about 2:00 two engine crews were called to help sandbag the entrance and they made it in time and prevented the water from getting in. p.g.a. crews have been working all night to restore power to thousands of customers in the east bay. they say about 15,000 customers in hayward and castro valley this morning are without power because of a transmission power problem. they don't know for a fact it is storm related n berkeley, 460

customers in the dark and richmond 200 residents without power this morning. that number had been 29,000 just a few hours ago. the rough weather is not deterring occupy protestors in san francisco. they plan another rally at 2:00 this afternoon in the financial district. last night hundreds of occupy protestors filled the streets, then headed to the abandoned cathedral hill hotel, smashes windows and more. we talked to cell phones to one of the demonstrators on the roof of the building. >> just in so many ways right now, it is basically stealing everything that people didn't have. >> officers did enter the now vacant cathedral hotel to fine -- find the occupiers. san francisco police tried to stop them from getting in with a line of officers at one of the doors of the hotel and the confrontation there got pretty loud for a few minutes. besides breaking into a vacated building, someone busted out

several windows of the bentley car dealership a block away on vaness. this is a march that weaved through much of downtown and tangled up traffic along the way. >> trying to get home but spent hatch an hour here at vaness. >> what do you think? >> i agree with the movement and all that, i just don't agree with the moment and the time. >> in anticipation of the demonstration, wells fargo boarded up their branch at market and drum and a bank employee said they closed early to make sure they were safe. a bank across the street also closed early. at the start of the march organizers choreographed a dance during a rally at the justin herman plaza. the police estimated about a thousand people. several elementary school students are here. >> we are here because we think the schools should get the money that the banks are getting because the schools definitely need it more than the banks. >> in this demonstration police say that they did take three

people into custody for tresspassing here at the now abandoned cathedral hill hotel and during the confrontation with police officers upon entry we know two police officers were injured. in san francisco, abc7 news. >> oakland mayor jean quan had an occupy moment of her own yesterday in washington d.c. [chanting] >> she was in d.c. when her cab was swarmed by occupy washington demonstrators. police say they were staking out the hotel where she and other mayors were staying. police broke up the small mob and the cab drove off. she is safe. she attracted national attention for what is called her poor handling of the occupy protestors. demonstrators of the abortion rally will be breasting today. these rallies will mark the demonstration of the roe v. wade

decision. 39 years ago the ruling legalized abortion in this country. activists will rally at justin herman plaza starting at 11:00 this morning. they say there will be tent to protect from the rain. anti-abortion activists will rally at civic center plaza at 11:30 and then they will march in their eighth annual walk for life. >> a kidnapped girl is safe this morning and the man suspected of abducting her is dead. they shot and killed the man yesterday afternoon. now investigators are trying to figure out why he kidnapped his ex-girlfriend's daughter. the 12-year-old was abducted about 1:30 yesterday morning from her home. an amber alert went out and led officers to a townhouse where investigators say lee was holding the girl hostage. >> the suspect opened fire on the officers as they approached,

and officers fired several rounds from inside the apartment and at this time the officers believed the victim was in imminent danger. >> because of the gunfire they decide on a hostage rescue and forced their way inside. a s.w.a.t. team shot and killed lee. the girl was not hurt. she was taken to a hospital to be checked and then reunited with her family. police say a pair of thugs are using a fake craig's list ad to advertise a car for sale in oakland and at the last minute people respond to the ad are told to meet the seller in oakland off 580 and harrison street near lake merit and when they get there police say they are robbed by two african-american males. reno police say an elderly man has admitted to accidentally causing a fire to force 10,000 people to abandon their homes. it it broke out on thursday. 80 miles an hour winds quickly spread the flames which engulfed more than 6 square miles. 29 homes burned to the ground. the man who start the fire said it began after he discarded fireplace ashes. the fire is now 65% contained.

just look for the white check. >> u. c. san francisco has begun exploring ways to change its relationship with the university ever california but the school insists it's not trying to abandon the u. c. system. the school said it needs to raise revenues to avoid a deficit in the next three years. to do that it needs more financial independence. it's goal is to form a govern board to address the needs of ucsf which they say are different than the other ten

campuses. >> we don't have undergrads, we aren't a general campus, we are a health science campus. eats our hope in having a board that focuses specifically on ucsf we can overachieve. >> ucf wants to pay the system only for the services it needs. the university of california spokesperson told abc7 the regents are intrigued by the idea. new state jobless numbers offering a glimmer of hope. the california unemployment rate fell to 11.1% last month thanks to seasonal retail hiring and job growth in construction. information services, health and education, even government. the breakdown of the bay area shows unemployment remains lowest in miran, san francisco and san mateo county. 7.3% higher in the south bay, 8.9 and highest in the east bay at 9.3%. well, the recession has left its mark on just about everybody from the young to the old, from the rich to the poor. but one group in particular is struggling.

we are talking about young men of color. and that was the focus of a state assembly hearing held yesterday in oakland. one of the larger problems is the rate of minority men in prison. many says there needs to be more money spent on education and support, not on prisons. >> then we can lower the recidivism rate, and more money can be put into education and less into prisons. >> there is a big discrepancy what is real and what is published. what is real is our boys and men are not graduating at the same rate as some affluent counter parts and we need to fill that gap. >> other suggestions, better food for students, more tutoring and better alternatives to expulsion. lisa is here now talking about this forecast. you have the near forecast and the far forecast and they are a tale of two forecasts. >> yeah. the rain is winding down here. still breezy. we are looking at the snow picking up in the sierra nevada.

>> welcome back. 6:16 on a saturday morning. looking at a picture from sutro. i might not have noticed this some other day but as i look at the lights on market street i see a lot of gold and red. am i seeing things, lisa? >> no, that's what i see too. >> that's what you see, too? >> yes, absolutely. a little rain, too. not a lot. that has definitely quieted throughout the morning hours. >> as we head outside, we are looking at the wet pavement. as the sun comes up skies will be partly and mostly cloudy. but the bulk of the activity has ended. here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. a glimpse of the south bay shows a few light showers down around 101. here's a closer inspection of the peninsula, the north bay and the east bay, and a little bit

further over toward 680 and 580. all is quiet there. and around here around san jose, a few light showers. take a look at the last three hours, the loop and you will notice the movement of the rain from west to east and how quickly it continues to press off into the central valley. the sierra nevada, the snow is picking up right now. we have heavy snow at the tahoe valley airport, 34 degrees. over three inches, almost four inches of rain. and down around ben loman over 6 inches. in between one to two inches common, 1.59 in napa, and over an inch and a third in san francisco. the front has passed and we are getting into a little bit of the rain-cooled air. 39 -- gusting to 36 in the livermore valley.

oakland 37 miles an hour winds. we will look for a break in the action from storm number two to storm number three, which will arrive tomorrow. but for the time being, you know, we can cleanup and allow for a little bit of a respite throughout the afternoon today. so showers, they are winding down. a couple with breezy winds this morning and the sierra snow through about midmorning. then we will look for the next storm system to arrive. the beginning of it this time tomorrow. so here's a look at our radar satellite composite. you will notice with the front pushing into southern california we are getting some of that cooler air now. still it is a bit unstable. so as we go through the rest of the morning hours notice we've got the green over the bay area through 8:00. that's the light shower activity. but look what happens through 10:00, the afternoon, the evening, the overnight hours it will cloud up. the southwesterly winds are back and 6:00 tomorrow the heaviest rain in sonoma county. it will take a while to get

going but probably about 3:00 in the afternoon that's when we will see the heavier returns to the north and through 7:00, 8:00, the chance of showers and then the heavy rain through the overnight hours. then ending we 9:00 on monday morning. so the commute will be wet again. then we are setting up for drier and milder weather. but the snow continues to go through the afternoon. the heaviest will be this morning with the lowering snow levels to about lake level this morning and the surf continues to pick up with about 20-foot swells out there. mild afternoon, mostly cloudy skies. a slight chance of showers as we get into the afternoon. the bulk of the activity behind us. the rain moves in tomorrow. kind of a lot like this morning, although it will be picking up in the day instead of winding down. then notice mid-and upper 60s. >> wow, back to where we were. >> yeah. >> thanks a lot. well, we are joined from new york to tell us what is come up at 7:00 on "good morning america." good morning to you. >> hey, good morning to you from a snowy new york.

here's abc7 vic lee with the interview. >>? is the family room. we are short a little bit furniture, the receive face are a little small but we are ready for the football game sunday. >> bill calls it a milestone in the healing process for their family. their old one story home had extensive smoke and water damage. they decided to tear it down and build their dream home. a five bedroom house, one that's big enough to accommodate four growing children. they added 900 square feet and a second floor. >> we needed some more space and this was a good opportunity since the roof had to come off and the walls had to come down. >> it's been a long and difficult 16 months since the explosion forced them out. they have all gone through therapy and living out of suitcases has been difficult. >> we had to move into another house. the kids lost all their toys, all their clothes, lost all the things that gave them their identity, which made it a real challenge. >> they watched their new home being built little by little. bill and betty took extra steps to make sure their kids would be

level up there? >> started off high and everyone was excited about the snow but it was at 7,000, 8,000 feet but now it's lowering to lake value and the bulk of the activity is winding down. some of the bases, kirk wood has a very high base so they are ben if thing from a couple feet there. but another one on the way tomorrow that will add to the snowpack. right now here's our roof camera. can you see the red and the gold out there? yeah, everyone is anticipating a great day tomorrow, rain or shine, right? well, the third system on the way tomorrow and it will bring some wet weather for the 49ers. here's a look right now. things have quieted down considerably over the past several hours. live doppler 7hd shows a few showers from the north bay into the east bay. here's a look right now from oakland down through almeda. and into the south bay just light showers. 101 south of -- north of morgan hill, south of san jose.

a quick loop over the past three hours and you will see as the system passes on to the east, we will see a few showers become generated in that cooler air. but take a look at the rainfall totals. not quite an in inch san jose, but up to six inches around ben loman, nearly four inches mount saint helena and inch in oakland, hayward. pretty decent tollings, even in the rain showed dough of livermore we are looking at an in and perhaps a quarter for the past 24 hours. 40s and 50s right now. the numbers coming down a few degrees, but the winds still allowing for some gusts up to 37 americans. especially near the airport. things have been quieter in santa rosa, napa still pretty breezy, and out by the delta. still showers, breezy winds this morning. more snow in the sierra but that will be winding down during the later morning hours.

heavy snow right now at the tahoe valley airport. the next snow system does arrive tomorrow. here's the first one. a strong one quickly moving to the south and east. we will be looking at partly cloudy skies today. look at our computer animation and you will notice the lighter green and the rain pushing off to the south and east this morning. as we go through the rest of the day, not much going on. just a slight chance of showers. but as we head toward tomorrow morning, we will get the winds picking up. it will be cloudy through the overnight hours. not quite as cold but here's the chance of rain through the morning. afternoon hours, the bulk of the activity toward the latter half of the game. so with the light showers it will be a little cool out there, but i think the heaviest rain will happen toward the morning commute tomorrow. and today the snow will be winding down throughout the afternoon. but the measurement in terms of feet, above 7,000 feet. the swells from 14 to 18 feet today. dangerous condition along the

shoreline. temperatures mid-and upper 50s. just a slight chance of rain. so nice little break before we see maybe another inch or so tomorrow. then we are dry. boy, are we mild right through the rest of the week and like you said, back to where we were in december and january. >> exactly. lisa, thanks a lot. >> mountain view could be the next bay area city to ban plastic bags and certain plastic containers. the city council will consider a plan to draft a city ordinance. other communities have already passed measures to protect the waterways from local trash. mountain view would have to decide who would be affected by the ban. it's estimated as much as a quarter of the space in u.s. disposal facilities is taken up by styrofoam. the stuff lasts just about forever and is difficult to recycle in a cost-effective way. but a pilot program started by surfers could change all that.

>> like everyone else, surfers enjoy and depend on a clean, healthy ocean, but a lot of beaches are littered with trash and one of the biggest problems is styrofoam. >> it's basically oil in a different form sitting on the beach. >> it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces and gets consumed by animals and sea life and winds up in actually in the food stream which he understands winds up oftentimes on our plates. >> michael is one of the founders of sustainable surf, a new organization trying to get surfers and the surf is industry to go green. one of their first projects focuses on styrofoam, the kind often used to pack electronics. >> the technical name is called eps or expanded polystyrene. it's the material in one of these blanks. , the 100% recycled surf blanks. >> blanks are the score of a surfboard. experts carefully carve them to get the performance they want on different types of waves. most blanks are made of new styrofoam. but now a company in southern california is using recycled foam for their blanks.

they showed us the process. the shaper, james mitchell, said it's a great product. >> if it didn't have this skin on it and said e-blank on it, i wouldn't know the difference, which is what i want. >> it sounds great, but there's a serious problem. it costs a lot of money to collect styrofoam and get it to a recycling facility. it may be lightweight, but as you know from your house, it takes up a lot of room. >> it's about 90% air so you are basically trucking around air. >> that's where sustainable surf comes in. they organized a pilot program with business partners and volunteers to move the styrofoam cheaply. starting in november they put collection boxes at surf shops and a few other locations in san francisco and santa cruz. sponsors paid for the materials and customers started bringing in foam right away. >> this bin is full now. we have a few more bags ready to go as well. so the response has been really, really good. >> volunteers pick up the foam and store it at an office in

to install the machine and the couple was ready to move into their own place until disaster struck. >> quarter to midnight we got a phone call saying that we were flooding the unit below us. i said that's funny because we aren't there. >> they rushed over to the condo and found a big puddle under their new washing machine. tiger said water leaked from the washer through this wall under the floor and into the unit below. >> we hadn't even done a load of laundry in our washing machine and it's already flooding, flooding our unit and the couple below us. they contacted sears and they replaced the hose on the washer. that stopped the leak. however the home was already damaged. they had to pull out a wall, the stove behind it, and the bamboo floor that covered the entire first floor. repairs costing nearly $30,000. >> you got your new place and you can start moving in but, wait, we have to replace your whole flooring. >> they moved in but it was a tough way to start a new life.

here furniture is pushed to one side. the second floor serves as a living and dining room and tiger said sears wouldn't pay for damages until it determined the cause of the leak. >> it was back and forth with whose fault is it. >> ten months passed and tiger said the couple still had no money for repairs. >> we knew we needed to reach out for help so that's why we called 7 on your side. >> so we contacted sears. it looked into this case, and weeks later the couple received a huge be lated wedding gift, $29,700 from sears. the retailer telling 7 on your side it cannot discuss what happened here. the spokesperson said the settlement is confidential, therefore i can't comment on the details related to the case. they didn't hesitate. they hired a crew right way to put in a new floor and wall. the finishing touches are almost
