>> terry: in the news in saturday morning, police search for a man they say stabbed a 15-year-old girl to death. a man beaten badly breaks his silence. >> lisa: its clear and chilly start but temperatures once again, in the 60s and 70s today. >> terry: good morning. i'm terry mcsweeney. san leandro police are looking for a suspect in the murder of a 15-year-old girl. this morning police have identified the primary suspect as 19-year-old henry leon who was involved with a relationship with the victim and is the father of their nine-month-old baby. it occurred on pacific avenue about 6:30 last night. they found the girl with stab wounds in her body and repeated attempts to revive her failed and she was pronounced dead at the scene. >> the investigation is still active and we're trying to

collect evidence and identify witnesses to find out who was involved in this incident. >> henry leon is believed for driving a cadillac, 35 fbe 608 is the license plate. anyone with information to find leon is encouraged to call san leandro police. they beat him and called him a terrorist and now the south bay hate crime victim is sharing his story with abc7. it happened back on november 21 but police just a sketch of one of the attackers. tomas ramon brings the victim's account i. >> i got in a car. >> he now lives in pain and fear. it's also because a trip he made to this lucky store november 21. three men approached his car as he was leaving. >> they hitting me and called me

a terrorist. poured alcohol on me. then on third member came out of no one nowhere. >> these were photos after the attack. he has a scarred jaw and two plates in his face holding his jaw together. that injury was cause by this bottle which his attackers dropped into the car after hitting in him in the face. >> i believe if the bottle hadn't gotten stuck there they wouldn't have stopped until i was unconscious or perhaps even dead. >> the parking lot was filled with pre-thanksgiving shoppers and no one came forward to help. >> i was literally five to ten feet from the shoppers. >> that is why they released a sketch of one of the suspects, hispanic male, 5'6" to 5'9" and he complains that they have been slow to investigate.

they say the attack is being treated as height crime. we take the attack very seriously. we have exhausted all leads and now asking the public for help. he says he wants justice. he lost his job as a technical designer after the attack and medical bills total some $20,000. he is having nightmares and is says he is afraid to leave his home. >> i don't like going out in public, i feel vulnerable. >> san jose police are asking for witnesses to come forward. anyone who is in the lucky's parking lot around 9:00 p.m. and saw the attack, is asked to give him a call. a san jose state student is under arrest facing charges for entering dorm rooms and groping four young women. his name is michael escobar. ama baits has reaction from students on campus. >> i've never seen him before.

>> he doesn't look familiar. >> he is a student here? >> really. that is crazy. >> students are getting their first look at 21-year-old michael escobar, a fellow student that was arrested after an incident at jo west residence hall. >> i didn't know. it woke me up again and i was alert telling me about a man in here and he groped someone. >> four women say they were groped while they slept. he doesn't live in jo west but it's easy to debt in, trail someone that has a key card. once inside the building. the victim left the door unlocked. >> police came in said there were intrude they are the building and i should on lock my odors and be safe. >> were doors were not locked? >> no, my doors weren't locked

actually. >> why not? >> sometimes you forget. if your roommate you leave them locked in case. >> but each roommate has their own key. >> if i'm hanging out this time of day, i have it locked because you never know. >> some students are concerned about their safety. >> like someone got groped a while ago. so it's happening and it kind of freaked me out. >> the university are doing what it can to ease fears. >> they said officers were going to be on our floor and we can talk to them about the situation and kind of find out what happened to make sure that we're all feeling comfortable. >> they are relieved that somebody has been arrested for this. i think it's a lesson leaving their doors unlocked is not

okay. kind of problem not just at san jose state. stanford police have issued a crime alert. it came earlier this week after a student tried to take a picture of her in the shower. it happened on campus. three similar incidents have occurred on the stanford in the past two weeks. >> mayor chuck reed is coming out against limiting the city to ten medical marijuana clubs. there was a voter referendum that may require state law for as two reasons to back away from the city ordinance. the council will likely consider repealing it next month. >> california is sending layoff notices to more than 500 police employees including 140 guards. they are losing their jobs to comply with a federal court today ease overcrowding. california has two years to

reduce it's prison pop playing. another round is expected in the fall. >> the u.s. army says the optional of humane euthanasia was the best way to get rid of coyotes but not everyone agrees. over the past year and a half there have been growing complaints about the coyote population. they admit they are in the natural habitat but the risk to public safety was too great. >> we used a licensed hunter to come in. there were lots of options we had, firearms and the zig was to made to use a bow and arrow. >> two coyotes were killed. the army believes the problem is solved but an animal rights group says this amounts to lethal control of coyotes and their populations can increase in response to lethal control. coming up next, a dramatic

and transparent is disappointing. >> beef prices are soaring at the supermarket and industry experts says it's about to get worse. >> it's sticker shock at the meat counter. >> tremendous increase in beef prices lately. >> every month, butchers are putting new price tags on beef. >> increasing prices in beef have been in the works year and a half. >> price of hamburger jumped from 2.87 to 3.55 a pound, 24% increase. a steak, 14% jump. 5.29 a pound to more than $6. reason is simple, there is not enough cattle in our country anymore. you have to go back to the cold war when harry truman was president to find the last time the number of cattle in the

country was so slow low. five years ago and feed and costs took off. cattle men cut their herd to make a living. then last summer the drought multiplied it. >> extreme shortage in feed of driving the production costs to go up. >> terry: trace amounts of an unapproved chemical have been found in orange juice imported from overseas. the fear is that it can be mixed with american juice. they have stopped eleven shipments from entering in america's markets. five of the positive samples came from brazil. six from canadian plants. the scare twin two weeks ago when a major distributor found it in the sampling. >> this is not an isolated incident. it wasn't just one shipment.

they say based on testing so far orange juice is safe to drink. levels are too low to be a health hazard. lisa is here now and we're talking about what it looking like a beautiful day. >> lisa: it's so clear out there. we have a lot of upper level wind from the east bay, oakland down along the coast. 30-40 mile-an-hour gusts and offshore flow is stirring things up. we're talking about a warm day and that is next. >> terry: also next the warriors get lit up by kevin durant and the thunder. larry beil has this morning's sports. welcome back on this saturday morning. a clear day here in the bay area. emeryville and golden gate bridge out there. bay bridge off to your left. a fantastic day on the way. i get that from really reliable source who happens to be right now, lisa argen. >> you can figure that out. we have a view of the live cams. we're on a roll with the dry weather but we do need the rain. we're talking about clear conditions and some upper level wind gusts this morning. the air quality is good.

we're looking at temperatures that are much warmer in some spots. in the north bay we are colder. dewpoints are very low, in the 20s. atmosphere nice and dry. it cools off quickly but warms up quickly. with a little bit of a wind in the upper elevations of our east bay hills. some of that wind going to the surface, 52 in oakland and half moon bay is at 55 last hour. no wind at all in the north bay at the surface and cold valleys where the cool air drains in the valley. we've got temperatures freezing and below. 35 in concord. 36 in redwood city. real variety this morning and besides oakland, everyone is much cooler, 20 degrees cold they are napa with 11 degrees colder in livermore valleys. sunny and clear and then today warmer day of the weekend, just slightly because tomorrow we'll

see a wind shift. with that wind shift a cold front approaches the west coast. here is a look ridge of high pressure that currently has the jetstream once again riding high. this area of high pressure bringing us the dry offshore flow. we don't have any fog, dry air in place and it's 9 degrees this morning in the northern sierra. that is how cold it is but by later on today, upper 40s. 70 at our coast. 78 in los angeles. this next weather system will bring us an onshore flow tomorrow. that will increase clouds late in the afternoon. that is about the only change. numbers may come down 2-3 degrees. then later on in the evening hours with that onshore flow, increasing clouds and the possibility of maybe a few sprinkles as we head toward early monday morning. 2:00 monday morning, there is

the rain line. it looks impressive but looking what happens as we go through the next couple of hours. it falls apart. by 9:00 after the morning commute we are back into sunny conditions. as for today, offshore flow and mild afternoon again with upper 60s in the south end of the bay and down by the monterey bay, once again the possibility of a few 70s from santa cruz to salinas. seven-day forecast once again about 5-10 degrees above average. tomorrow a few degrees cooler with a few extra clouds and then that cold front doesn't amount to much, maybe a few raindrops in the north bay by the delta monday morning and partly cloudy skies the rest of the week, dry and mild again. >> terry: again and again. lisa, thanks. >> michele kwan will be inducted into the hall of fame during the national championships being held in san jose. last night the warriors didn't

>> terry: good morning, i'm terry mcsweeney. >> president obama's weekly address is asking people to korng call their representatives in congress. as he went to several states this week. he met people who still believe in america but are skeptical that progress can be made in washington. he wants lawmakers to send him a bill to limit the influence of money in politics. >> tell your member of congress that it's time to end the gridlock and start tackling the issues that really matter. an economy built on american manufacturing, american energy, american skills and education and return to american values. an economy built to last. >> terry: he also says he wants end political game playing when approving nominees by requiring a simple yes or no vote within 90 days. >> occupy oakland is getting ready for action.

occupy oakland is calling today move in today where they will occupy a building and hold it as long as they can. the move is scheduled between 2:00 and 5:00 this afternoon at an undisclosed location. they plan to defend the building by actively. >> 81 people are slated to lose their jobs on february 2nd. city officials are discussing using $7.5 million in unspent redevelopment funds to repay those employees for an extra two weeks in what amounts to be a paid layoff notice. >> it doesn't mean people won't get laid off. they will get a decent interval and proper notice. it also means there will be time for a more orderly hand justify. >> terry: final decision is expected next week. a unique honor for a bay area man.

today she receiving an hoon ear promotion 60 years after his retirement from the marine corps. why his lifelong service is being fully recognized. >> reporter: he knew at age 5 he wanted to be a marine. today at 81 he remembers that moment he saw the marine corps color guard marching in the parade. >> they went by and i looked up and i said that is what i going to be. >> at age 19 he put on the uniform and dreamed of a military career. his official service was cut short in 1953. he lost his combat during the korean war rescuing a wounded marine during the fire fight. >> i put him on my back and carried him counsel the hill. a mortar shell blew us up. >> his actions earned him the purple heart and navy cross for

valor. >> he is a hero in so many ways. it's impossible to describe them all. >> reporter: had he not been injured he would have been promoted to gunnery sergeant and now a rare promotion. >> the ceremony is due in part to extraordinary service in korea and even more so to his legendary service as an instructor. >> 17 straight years not getting paid, teaching different combat techniques. >> it was my honor and privilege to do that. it took away from me a lot of the hurt of having to be retired at the age of 23. >> he also served as three terms as mayor of milpitas and has been married for 63 years. she will be by his side. >> i'm absolutely overwhelmed.

[ laughter ] >> lisa: hopefully you are waking up all rested and able to enjoy the afternoon. we are in this dry pattern. we need the brain. it's not coming in fact a weak system headed our way but it is going to fizzle out. here is lake tahoe shot. temperatures are in the single digits and dewpoints have plummeted into the 20-degree range. so we're talking about a cold air mass, but a nice rebound in temperatures today. sutro where we have a little bit of wind at about 2,000 to 3,000 feet. that is allowing for some of the warmer air and parts of the bay but in the valleys where we don't have any wind at all, we are sitting at freezing. santa rosa below freezing, 38 in livermore. 52 in oakland.

half moon bay, 52 degrees. we're on our way to more 60s today. temperatures for a time being in the upper 20s in napa. that is why you are looking at that 20-degree cool down from yesterday. for most of you, a clear and cold start this morning. sunny and mild this afternoon. tomorrow night, it will shift things around in terms of the wind. high pressure in control to the east of us, offshore wind blowing the fog off the coast and upper level winds cleaning out the atmosphere. so we have a good air quality. then by tomorrow we'll look for subtle changes. not enough to really break down this ridge. it's going flatten it. today mild conditions down to southern california. 78 there. 74 in san diego. very windy in southern california with santa ana winds cranking up.

this area of high pressure will bring the onshore flow back tomorrow. it means a few extra clouds in the afternoon. high clouds to mid-level clouds. by 4:00 in the afternoon, look at the north bay, you've got mostly cloudy skies. clouds continue to advance to the south to the east with a weak cold front that will bring rain in mendocino and perhaps sonoma county. into the wee hours of monday morning. it may wet the pavement. some mist and drizzle for your monday morning commute. we're back to high pressure and mild conditions for the rest of not only monday but the rest of the week. 66 in oakland. 67 for san jose, upper 60s, could see a 70 in the north bay around santa rosa. depends how much wind we've got. 70s in santa cruz. seven-day forecast calls for more mild temperatures with numbers as much as ten degrees above normal. couple degrees cooler tomorrow.

slight chance of showers into monday morning and partly cloudy and numbers will continue to climb back up. february 1st is wednesday. we should be seeing more winter-like weather. we'll keep looking. it was 70 in santa cruz today. thanks. budget constraints are tough on public agencies right now. police and fire departments across the state are coping with layoffs and cutbacks. volunteers with search and rescue have to spend their own money to do it. eric thomas has this assignment 7 report from alameda county. >> reporter: search and rescue chief ron sykes and a captain knows what it spending long nights and days with their search dog while you are looking for a missing person. >> people with common good where

they want to help the community and provide a service. give something back. >> reporter: like the search for hasani campbell when ho was five years old that went missing two years ago. its high profile case that has yet to be resolved. there are the others. >> there is a lot of things that go on that never hit the nice. we find people and nobody hears about it because that is what we do. >> search and rescue team works out of the sheriff's department but they are all volunteers. xhuy of timed and considerable amount of money. >> to stand up, average search and rescue member, it's close to thousand dollars in basic gear. >> much more than that who need specialized equipment like scuba divers. >> there dogs on your partners, that kind of money doesn't bother me. >> she has been doing it for 20

years. volunteers who want to start dog handling can expect to spend $2,000 per year for the prospective volunteer, that amount of money can be the difference between having a roof over your head or not. that is why it's easy to find people who want to volunteer but finding people that can is another story. >> economic timers being what they are it's even more of the challenge because of the costs and so forth. the fact they don't have the free time they have available from their jobs and home life to be able to commit. >> reporter: there are no hard numbers on people who want to become at the search and rescuers but can't because of the economy. if financing is shrinking the pool of expected volunteers they aren't having any effect on the caseload. eric thomas, "abc 7 news." >> don't go away. today. it sounds like a whole lot of fun. if you call it a three bridge fiasco race, you are expecting some fun and hopefully nothing serious. they got a great day for that. an east bay contractor is under investigation for failing to deliver on a promise. the company was supposed to install new windows but never got the job even started. michael finney is here. >> picture window here. >> reporter: the house still has the same windows, a problem for her husband tom who is battling cancer. >> he a little more sensitive to cold. >> so they hired this company to put in new double pane windows. the contract calls for installing ten of them for $8900. the only concern they demanded a big deposit, 50% up front. >> as long as i'm going to to get windows.
