captors were very polite, even treating them like family. >> 66-year-old patty seen on the right and 66-year-old norman of new york city were on a kristen pilgrimage when the tour bus they were on were stopped by armed men on the sideline that they were under captivity. >> the guys came out of the truck and the van. they had guns but they never did point the guns at us. one was go down. then i said i should be the one to go down because i'm the leader of the group. so i went down and they said they want more. they want my husband. my husband is physically challenged so my guy said you can't take him. they treat us like family and they reassured in a very nice way that we are just want you -- we will not hurt you.

>> the captors wanted to exchange the tourists for some of their tribe that were arrested. >> they were hoping by doing what they did they would accelerate it. >> she spoke to her captors about god and family while they fed them. >> we drove like two hours away where they pick us up. then they build a fire and then they brought some, you know, something to snack on. like cheeses and breads that they baked. >> after driving they've captors around for six hours and feeding them again, the men negotiated with egyptian police who agreed to release the tribes men. the women were released unharmed. >> they were very nice. i think it depends on how you talk to them. i really believe it was god that talked to them, to their hearts. >> she said she's led kristen pilgrimage tours to egypt for here's. the industry lost more than $4 billion last year. she told authorities if they

want to get tourists back, they have to provide security. they are due back on tuesday n the newsroom, abc7 news. >> oakland officials must be relieved this morning after an occupy oakland demonstration did not get out of hand. there's another protest planned for tomorrow. last night about 100 protestors chanting anti-police slogans began roaming the streets around 8:30. organizers said the march as, quote, a militant action. about 50 police in riot decree shadowed the group on foot and advance and which helicopters has protestors marched through traffic. this time no trouble, no arrests were made. quite a contrast to last weekend when more than 400 protestors were arrested following violent clashes with police. plus a rampage through city hall that left the ground floor seriously damaged. the occupy movement's website calls for another day of action

starting tomorrow morning at 8:30 at the alameda county superior court. they plan to pack the courtrooms at 9:00 a.m. hold a noon rally at the plaza and fill the courtrooms again at 2:00 in the afternoon. city office will remain open and city leaders are encouraging businesses to stay open, as well. crews are still trying to figure out exactly with a caused a major water pipeline to flood a fremont neighborhood this weekend. several families had to be evacuated early saturday morning when a river of mud and water suddenly swept through the warm springs neighborhood just west of interstate 680. abc7 sergio shows us the big mess. >> reporter: streams of water flowing through this neighborhood pushes dirt and muck along the way. one resident said his wife first noticed the problem. >> my wife heard a loud thump or a pop and thought it was a

little unusual because it was louder than the normal cats jumping on the roof. >> instead it was thousands of gallons of water rushing in his yard, the water from a nearby aqueduct. it sprung a week after they maintenance groups finished work on the line. >> not a huge gusher, nothing you would see going up into the sky but it created enough flowing down the hill is started to bring some of the sediment from the hill. >> even after the water was shut off on the problem line, residents still had to deal with the muddy mess and makes of their neighborhood. >> they left without a clear man what to do, without any numbers, who to call, who was responsible for electricet, who was responsible for going back inside or not. >> he is one of four families evacuated from their home. according the fire department water seeped into the houses. they have since been allowed to return. as many as 15 homes were affected by the flood. the state department of water resource said most the damage

was restricted to yards and garages. into the second night of dealing with the waterline break. crews with sucks cups continued their cleanup. right any the it biggest problem for the homeowners is all the water trapped in their basements. this crew has already siphoned out more than a thousand gallons of water from under this home. and behind the homes where the auquaduct runs, crews continue their work on repairing the damage from the rush of water. abc7 news. and a teacher in redwood city is facing charges of child endangerment and battery. police arrested 44-year-old alexia of milbrae yesterday after receiving a report of possible physical abuse of students at roosevelt elementary school. she teaches developmentally disabled and autistic children at that school. police aren't releasing details but they say the incidents happened at the school and involve two four-year-old boys who are students there.

>> san jose police arrested a man they say kidnapped his ex-girlfriend, assaulted her friend and rammed their car while trying to keep them from escaping. 38-year-old vincent was arrested shortly after 1:00 yesterday afternoon. police say his ex managed to escape and call a male friend. they say padilla attacked the friend with a knife before ramming the car they were trying to escape in. this morning gop presidential candidates are turning their attention to colorado and that state's tuesday caucus. this after mitt romney picked up his second win in a row in yesterday's nevada republican caucuses. romney's rivals are not letting up the pressure but they may not be able to stop his momentum. abc's karen traverse has the latest on the race for the republican nomination. >> reporter: it's two in a row for mitt romney. >> what a great showing? thank you, nevada! >> with his victories he's on a modest winning streak but has his eye on the general election.

that gas flows to israel and jordan. it's the twelfth such attack in the year. egypt has been in the grip of anti-government violence since wednesday. this morning the commander of a rebel force of syrian soldiers say they have no choice now but to fight to free the country. worldwide condemnation is pouring in over the attack by syrian forces on the city there. more than 200 people have been killed. anger erupted in the united nations this weekend after china and russia voted against a resolution calling for syrian president bashar assad to step down. >> for months this council has been held hostage by a couple members. these members stand behind empty arguments and individual interests while delaying and seeking to strip bare any text that would pressure assad to change his actions. >> russia has been a friend of syria since the soviet days and continues to supply damascus

with arms. a marine's wife is dead and two people injured after an explosion at a remote training base near lake tahoe. thirty-eight families were evacuated after the propane gas explosion damaged seven homes. it happened in the mono county town of colville at the u.s. marine corps mountain warfare training center. the cause is being investigated. lisa is here talking weather, and not much change. >> no, not in the immediate future. we still have a nice finish. mild temperatures to warm in some spots today. so it's a clear and chilly start. here's the sutro camera. we will introduce a few clouds today. more tomorrow. we've got rain by tomorrow night. i'll have the full forecast straight ahead. >> thank you, lisa. also next the warriors make a fourth quarter rally in sacramento but could they pull out a win? mike shumann has the answer

it will take, boy, a lot. we have a little opportunity for some wet weather but it's not going to make a dent in our deficit. this comes our way unnests and then we are looking dry again. of course, leading up to president's holiday where a lot of folks want to go to the sierra in the next week or so. >> that's right. >> will we have any new snow? here's a look at heavenly. at the tahoe valley airport it's 13 degrees right now under clear skies. they are making snow. nice conditions with some afternoon sunshine and cold enough temperatures to keep that snow, what manmade snow happening. and back home from the peak, a clear start. the sun up in less than an hour. it will take until at least the 9:00 hour until we get out of the 30s. we will be in the low 40s in the north bay. look how mild it is at half moon bay. that's not a mistake. we have winds out of the east at about 15 to 20 miles an hour. that warmer air allowing temperatures to stay up here.

59. it's 50 in the city and lighter east winds, 10 to 15 miles an hour in the upper elevations but down in the lower valley, it's chili. 36 in napa, as well as santa rosa. really no fog to speak of. we are much warm are at the coast. warmer in oakland and san francisco. starting out a little warmer. we once again will see numbers well into the 60s. so the chilly start. sunny and mold as high pressure hangs on for another day, day and a half. then we will look for cloudy and cooler conditions tomorrow with the rain returning overnight. in fact, late in the day. the evening hours. later evening hours tomorrow into the tuesday morning commute. here's a look at our satellite and radar composite. notice we are dry across california but higher clouds begin to invade the state later on today, especially in the north bay. but by the afternoon we will see a mostly cloudy sky and then tomorrow temperatures will be cooler due to the cloud cover.

but our ridge won't let go yet. in fact, it's going to hang on for another day tomorrow. so the east winds today keeping us mild well above normal, and then it's the south winds ahead of this next system that gets cut off. so we've got a system headed our way. it's splitting. some of the energy headed into the north, the south portion of it will bring us some rain, but it's only going to run parallel to the coast so that means we around going to get rain into the valley. in fact, it's going to just stay here over the bay area. it will go into the east pay. you can see by 3:00 in the morning, tuesday morning, we've got some rain and it does spread into the concord, livermore valley. even into the south bay. maybe a half, three quarter inch of rain. but by tuesday afternoon we have scattered showers and high pressure quickly builds in behind it. nothing but high pressure today again with 70s southern half of the state, mid-60s in the north. 58 eureka. back home we have lower 50s. but 70s again morgan hill and

and show a ford explorer a thing or two about what it means to have best-in-class towing. the s.u.v. is back. >> welcome back. an interesting snapshot of california's economic recovery. according to a new report, one group in tech is not participating in the turnaround at the same pace. here's abc7's capitol correspondent nannette miranda with the story from sacramento. >> as california inches out of the great recession, the state's women, particularly single mothers, are still struggling. a new report called "falling behind" reveals men are finding jobs at a faster rate than women, giving a new name to the economic recovery. >> now we've moved into what some of the pundits are calling the he-covery where men are

getting jobs back, but we've seen women's employment stall. >> the report goes on to say that continued deep budget cuts to the safety net leave women in an even worse position. job training and cash grants has been slashed, making it harder to get new skills while raising kids. >> i am look for a job. >> after couch surfing with family for eight years, she finally has subsidized housing. the mother of two doesn't need a report to tell her how tough the recession and budget cuts have been. >> they can tax the rich people and leave us poor people alone because we are just getting poorer and it's not fair us to. >> it could get worse, as governor brown proposes deeper cuts to program like welfare and subsidized child care, parts of the budget that can be legally reduced. the report points out the state expects women to get up there -- to get off welfare faster

when there are jobs. >> obviously that's the only thing to cut. if there were more bad programs or lowered valued programs, we would cut those. we can't spend what we don't have. >> she is playing by all the rules, having moved off welfare and working. but with community college tuition rising, and her subsidized child care on the chopping block, the mediocrity -- the mother of three fears the worst, being homeless. >> i can imagine looking my kids in the face and tell them i'm sorry, you don't have your bed anymore and you don't have your house anymore. >> the women's foundation of california which funded this report thinks it's born to get -- eats born to get more female lawmakers into public office to help make budget decisions, but fewer than a quarter of the legislature could be women after this november's election. in sacramento, nannette miranda, abc7 news. >> mend it or end it. that is the discussion in at least two bay area cities, oakland and san francisco when it comes to ranked-choice voting. in san francisco competing ballot proposals are now being debated.

one would reform the system, the other would dump it. >> my wife tried to explain it to me. you know, one ear, out the other. >> i would have to be a physicist probably to tell you how it works. >> those were san francisco voters in november talking about ranked choice voting. though it's been in place sense 2004, that was the first time the system was used in a competitive mayor's race. it allows voters to rank their top three choices for office holders and does away with the need for a run off election. >> the vast majority of voters actually understand how the system works. >> the majority of the people actually don't get it. >> supervisor mark ferrell is co-sponsoring a charter amendment to repeal ranked choice which he says disenfranchises confused voters. >> i think people should be spending a lot of time thinking about who to vote for, what to vote for, not how to vote. that should be a simple equation. >> under his plan there would be a primary election in september, a run-off between the top two

candidates in november. supervisor david compost is co-sponsoring a competing measure that would mend it, not end it. keep ranked choice voting, which he said saved money and increases voter participation, and improve it with education outreach and technology. >> then you will have the opportunity here in san francisco to have a system that is more user-friendly, and that could actually allow more than three choices. and to allow for those choices in a way that is even simpler in terms of what the ballot looks like. >> the mayor wants to hear more from the public. >> i'm not taking a position that we have to eliminate it as of yet. >> if one or both measures pass the board this coming tuesday, they would beheaded to the june ballot. >> a royal welcome at pier 35 for queen elizabeth. ocean leaner made her maiden call to san francisco yesterday. at 960 feet long and more than

behind in our precipitation this year. hope it gets a little bit better, but in the meantime thank you for joining us. sit back, relax, and watch the abc7 sunday morning news. a nonprofit group is guiding dozens of people hoping to become the next wave of teachers in oakland. they are a diverse group that lilian kim tells us is the whole idea. >> you have to teach all day, and you are going to take interim classes at night. >> these are aspiring teachers getting a crash course on what it is going to take to get a job in the oakland unified school district. most are minorities who grew up in oakland. >> i was once one of those kids that was misunderstood, and i have, you know, a clear understanding of what's going on out there. i can help them. >> the nonprofit federally

funded group "teach tomorrow in oakland" thinks so too. they are hoping mean orty teachers can turn around the direct he's dropout rate which is now around 40%. most of the dropouts are minority boys. >> we need to have young men who can see young african-american men who are teaching, who are leading schools in front of them who are right there engaging them, using the type of strategies that they need to keep them in class. >> according to information collected from the state, 92% of the students at oakland unified are minorities so when it comes to the teaching staff, less than half are people of color. cheryl moore, a former city worker, said she was so tired of hearing those numbers that she decided to come out of retirement to earn her teaching credentials. she said she will be able to talk to black students in a way others may not. >> i might look like a mamma figure to them and can say it in a way that chill yourself, you know, and whereas a white teacher and a minority may not say it that way. >> for people with a b.a. it's

working to warm us up this morning. 59 half moon bay, compliments of a pretty strong northeastly wind. once again today those northeastly winds will bring the numbers up to above normal readings. what else is new, right? 42 fremont, 37 mountain view, 42 san jose with partly cloudy skies around the bay. we will see increasing clouds in the north bay. and then everywhere this afternoon. look for this morning to be warmer as you head on out in most areas. in fact, by the coast significancely warmer. a couple degrees warmer in oakland compared to yesterday. so a clear and chilly start. we are talking about more sunshine with a few high clouds toward the afternoon and then mostly cloudy skies for back to work on monday. cooler, anywhere from 2 to 5 degrees cooler and then we are talking about evening or late evening rain into your tuesday morning commute. so right now just clear condition are, as high pressure holds on for another day. a few high clouds will drift over this ridge and eventually

the ridge begins to shift a little to the east. we have a storm system to the rest of us and this system is going to split. so most of the energy heading to the north, some of it to the south, riding parallel to the coast. that's going to bring in some gusty winds and some pretty moderate rain. it's not going to make it much further into the valleys so we around talking about any mountain snow. it is a quick mover. high pressure quickly rebuilds behind it as soon as wednesday. so today the weather pattern holds pretty much the same as yesterday. but then tomorrow we will see the changes in temperatures of some cloud cover and a bit after wind shift. we will fast forward to the monday morning come future. it lacks fine, it looks dry, but by 10:00, 1:00, the rain moves in, the heaviest rain off the coast by the we hours of tuesday morning. but your 6:00 commute, we have some pretty good rain from the north bay even into the east bay and south bay. by the afternoon scattered showers and we will look for a dry tuesday evening commute.

60s and 70s for the most part across much of the state. 40s in the northern sierra. and once again unfortunately no snow for the mountains this week. 68 in oakland, 69 in san jose. mid-60s in our inland valleys. lower 60s around vallejo and richmond. we have low 70s again for gilroy and hollister. so we've got another sunny, mild day today, increasing clouds. mostly cloudy tomorrow and then that little shot of rain, half-inch, maybe three quarters of an inch, dry and mild again towards the middle to end of the week. next weekend, we were talking about rain, but it's still just a little discussion. the models aren't. >> a little gossip? >> yeah, it's not developing anything yet. >> thank, you lisa. well, the highway 1 devils slide tunnel is months away from completion. the long-away the by passion on the landslide prone section of highway 1 between pacifica and half moon bay is nearing a major

milestone. it's on track for their opening. we went inside for a look. >> reporter: the tunnel portals look nearly completed. th southbound roadway is finished. all that's needed is some striping. and in the northbound tunnel the surface is poured halfway. >> i would like to think of this as the last of the major milestones, pouring the roadway. we still have a lot of shawler -- smaller jobs to do after this. >> man and machine work together to pour and cure a 9-inch thick layer of concrete. each tunnel will have one lane, 12 feet wide, with a 2-foot shoulder on the left and a 8-foot shoulder on the right, which doubles as a bike lane. >> the original budgets of $272 million paw loons to $439 million, all of it it federal emergency relief funds. >> caltrans said the price tag went up because of surprises inside the mountain. >> before we started the tunneling, we did a lot of core samples to find out what the geological conditions would be

inside the mountain. we pretty much found the conditions. the problem is they changed much more frequently than expected. >> the bridge and tunnel should be a reliable route along the coast between pacifica and montara, unlike the current highway 1 which is chronically closed as the cliff crumbles above and beneath it. >> really it's just for the community. basically to bypass the difficult roadway out on the coast, and for vehicles now to have a much, you know, safer travel through the mountains. >> the tunnels should be open to traffic at the end of this year. then the old highway 1 will be open to hikers and bikers. heather ishimaru, abc7 news. >> don't go away. 7 on your side is next. >> an extensive oven has lots of fancy features, but won't cook the food. i'm michael finney. coming up, i help out a long-time baker. hey guys, breakfast!

bake and convection oven for $3,800 back in 2008. she said food has been coming out raw and runny ever since. her first disaster, a roast turkey. >> it was the most gorgeous, golden brown turkey i have ever seen. but when we cut into it, it was raw. >> she shows us pictures of the inside. >> the red is nowhere near cooked. >> and it had been cooking for hours. i went to carve it and i said what is this? >> technicians have been out half a dozen times to change settings and replace parts. the high level switch a few times, they changed the relay board, other things, and they said eats off 50 degrees. >> she kept them decor the repairs weren't working and wanted a new oven but it was out of it's one year oven. she said it's a very expensive oven. i said don't you ever replace an oven that's a lemon? she said, oh, we will work on it. >> carol contacted 7 on your side and showed us what happens

when she bakes her famous persimmon bars. >> 350 degrees, 20 minutes. >> the oven beeps at 350 degrees. she pops in the tray and 20 minutes later out come the bars. >> it's real mushy. >> soggy in the milling. -- middle. her digital thermometer might read why. sensor goes in the often and reads 286 degrees, not 350. >> possibly there were some manufacturing problems in the beginning. >> charlene is design manager at decor's south san francisco showroom. she said these ovens really have any problems and cooks swear by them. though the ovens do have complex features. >> they get a new appliance, they start cooking and they keep using it the same way their old oven works and then they coon of get mad at the oven. >> but decor wanted to make things right for carol so the company is giving her a brand new oven with a nice bonus. >> the exact same model that she purchased, and we are also going to go -- i'm going to go to her home and do in-home cooking with her. >> i'm very grateful for what 7

wednesday night's drawing is estimated at $10 million. as you know, we are just hours away from super bowl xlvi. yesterday there was a big super bowl oops. the nfl website posted the giants are super bowl champions on its website, complete with an image of the lombardi trophy. within minutes it was gone. the nfl said the web page was set up for possible use after the game and was inadvertently posted live. while the patriots and giants face-off in indianapolis, some of the fastest action is taking place in las vegas. we check out super bowl weekend on the world famous strip. >> 70,000 fans will be at lukas oil stadium, but four to five times that many will watch the game in this oasis in the nevada desert 1600 miles away. who do you think will have more fun? >> indianapolis or las vegas.
