morning, february 1th," police are searching for a six men after a standoff ends with a house in flames but so suspects. and santa clara officials now say the 49ers new stadium will open a year earlier than planned after finalizing a deal to start construction in the next few months. good morning. mainly cloudy and mild temperatures this morning. a new areas with mist and drizzle. >> good morning, i'm terry mcsweeney. this morning the hunt since for six armed robbery suspects the

police thought they had held newspaper a home yesterday. it began with what police believe was acreage's list robbery. >> in police standoff, the aftermath of an armed robbery on a street in another part of the city around 1:00. victim, from out of town, said he was there for a craig's list meet to go make a purchase. >> the victim stated that six males, mixed races, all armed with handguns, robbed and beat him and then left the scene in a green vehicle with chrome rims. >> police spotted the vehicle on castlewood and saw the suspects go inside. that's when they surround the house and cleared the neighborhood. >> i came home, coming up springs road, and they had everything already blocked off. i didn't know what was going on. i let them know where my house was and all i know they told me it was a hostage situation and we can't let anyone on the block.

>> he lives next door. >> from what i understand a man and woman live in the house. that's all i've ever seen. >> s.w.a.t. secured the scene. >> at approximately 5:15 in the evening the s.w.a.t. team deployed nonincendiary, flame police gases into the residence. >> police heard popping noises, which they thought were begun shots. then came the fire. >> i wanted to make sure it didn't leap over to my house because the houses are close. >> it burned for about a half-hour. when the fire was out, s.w.a.t. went in. >> the officers entered and determined no one was inside the residence except one dog. >> one dog died. police don't know what happened to the suspects or how the fire started, but they are confident it was not started by their teargas canisters. now the people who presumably live inside the house, didn't want to talk to us, came by and started going through there what was in there, taking out some be longing. i want to point out i spoke to the landlord of the house.

he says a couple lived there, a husband and wife. he hasn't had any problems with them. and police at this point are not making a connection between the suspects who were here and the people who lived here or the landlord. now as for the man who was beaten during that robbery, he suffered head wounds. we are told the injuries are not life-threatening. however this isn't the first craig's list incident they had here in vallejo. a month ago another man was robbed when he came out to buy a car. abc7 news. this morning a saxophone player familiar to thousand of bart commuters is under arrest and charged with first-degree murder. garrett sherrod, the sax man playing at the embarcadero station is accused of murdering his ex- wife 25 years ago in new mexico. his real name is ronald brewington.

he was indicted on murder charges 25 years ago but fled before he could be arrested. cold case team tracked him down here san francisco. >> a mother may face childen endangerment charges after she left twins alone with an s.u.v. they arrested amanda at the stone ridge ball wednesday afternoon. a person called police after notices them inside the cadillac escalade. the contra costa times reports she ducked into the mall to use the restroom but security cameras suggest she was in the mall for 40 minutes. the twins were released to their father. >> the occupy movement that appears to be staying put returned to u.c. berkeley. this time the police are taking a different tactic. the tents are back on the steps of u.c. berkeley's home. a small number of them, that is.

three months after the first occupy cal tent is city was forcibly removed by the u. c. police, the demonstrators have repitched. >> we stake being out what we think is people's ground. the tents are making it a public space for anyone to come in and just share in all of this. and i think that's why it is such an integral part of what we are doing. >> more than 24 hours into the latest encampment there's not a police officer in sight and according to a u.c. berkeley spokesperson, it will-likely stay like that for the time being. >> we've been monitoring the situation and admonishing them they are violating the campus policy of encampment and we are evaluating what to do as the hours pass. >> uc spokesperson clair holmes admits the university has height end their staff. and before a uc davis security officer sprayed pepper spray at a demonstrator. they say it's not their aim to have another confrontation with police. >> are you here to stay?

>> oh, yeah, absolutely. we had a mushroom there. i'm sure you have seen t lights like you can dig us out but like fungi we grow back. >> now the campus said they reoccupied cal because the university has not made any significant efforts to meet their demands to halt the rising costs of tuition. the university said yes, tuition has risen dramatically, but 65% of students here receive some sort of financial aid, 40% pay no tuition at all because they receive scholarships or grants. in berkeley, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> this morning san francisco police say they made no arrests during a peaceful but raucous anti-police demonstrator last night. it was at the foot of market street about 7:00. they cursed police while chanting no justice, no peace.

they blocked westbound traffic including muni street cars and buses, and then they headed tore union scare, blocking the intersection of powell and geary. that went on for about ten minutes and then they marched back to market street and into the westfield center where they surprised some shoppers. >> actually, i was kind of worried, but after that, no, because they were like screaming, but laughing and having fun. mall secured managed to get them to leave and the rain convinced them to call it a night without any clashes with police. a santa rosa middle school student was rushed to the hospital yesterday afternoon after drinking a beverage police think was laced with thc, the active chemical in marijuana. four other students said they shared the drink at lunch complained of symptoms including dizziness and sent home with their parents. the hospitalized youngster was released and police are investigating. a report found two san francisco firefighters died

because of a chain of other events that started with a broken window. anthony valerio and vincent perez were killed last year after a flash. temperatures reached as high as 700 degrees inside the home. the heat caused a window to break on a floor below where perez and valerio entered the home. >> it was an extreme heat evented. they were above the fire on the ground floor but when the window failed directly across from the stairwell they were about to descend it pushed them back in terms of the extreme heat event. >> they were among the first firefighters at the scene. the police emphasized they followed textbook procedures in attacking that fire. police still haven't determined why a woman drove her car across san francisco's ocean beach and into the pacific ocean. the lexus sedan ended up in the water near the great highway in fulton street about 6:30 yesterday morning.

that's a bizarre sight. firefighters rescued the driver from the car and took her to the hospital. her injuries are minor. a tow truck driver pulled the car from the ocean and finally succeeded when the tied reseed receded. >> santa clara voters vote tuesday on a $878 million construction project to build the new 49ers stadium. they now sea it will be finished in time for the 2014 season, a year earlier than originally planned. the contract goes to the turner-devcon partnership that's been planning the stadium since construction. -- or conception. groundbreaking is set for late spring with completion in august of 2014. there's a $5 million bonus for the builders if it's done in time. in not, they would pay tens of millions of dollars in fines. there's been a puppy knapping in san francisco. two dogs were injured and four puppies are missing after a burglary in the bayview district

>> new video from the costa concordia's crew after the italian ship hit a reef and began to sink. the captain is seen on the phone asking his senior officers what to do. they are calling for the ship to be abandoned ten minutes before the order was given to passengers. chaos ensues. the media is suspecting the video was shot by the captain's girlfriend. this morning officials are warning tourists heading to mexico stay within two blocks of their hotel to avoid drug violence, and not to travel at all to four mexican states and parts of ten others, including the one in which acapulco is located. baja, california is not on the list. 120 americans were killed in mexico last year alone. >> back here at home, the golden gate bridge toll takers could be out of a bridge as soon as december. all toll takers will be gone by next february. they are phasing out the 35 toll-takers. the district will save about $16 million over ten years. but it also ends the human touch that's been a part of the bridge since it opened in 1937.

organizers expect up to 1 million people to line the streets of san francisco this evening to watch the annual chinese new year's parade celebrating the year of the dragon. dozens of marchs will provide legs for the dragon that will zig-zag it's way to china town. it will take a long road. yesterday workers put the finishing touches on the colorful floats. the parade starts at 5:30 and it starts at second and market. then heads west on geary before going through union scare and then on post and finally north to portsmouth square. a lot of places to check out the new year's parade. you will be able to fine it easily because they are thinking maybe a million people, maybe a million people out tonight for that wild parade. exciting parade. are they going to have good weather? >> yes. not going to be too cold, they won't get wet but it doesn't matter anyway, they have had

earlier rain shower and a damp evening. but most of the activity you can see here from leave doppler 7 hd is pushing to the south. it will continue to do that throughout the morning hours. but we still have a lot of low-level moisture out there. not out of the question to see a shower, some sprinkles throughout the morning hours, especially the coastal hills, the higher elevations. right now the numbers pretty mild, up to 50 in napa, a 51 oakland with 49 mountain view and a little fog, 2 1/2 mile visibility here. half-mile visibility up in santa rosa. and the winds from time to time, a little bit breezy, as well. scattered light showers should do it overall throughout the morning hours. then we see partial afternoon clearing and that will mean some sunshine but it will clear later on this afternoon in the south bay so the showers will be longer through the santa cruz mountains. more rain arrives tomorrow evening. this system is going to bring an area of low pressure, stronger

area of low pressure in late in the day through the overnight hours. here's the first system with the clouds and the moisture sweeping to the south of us. you can see that there isn't a whole lot to it in our satellite and radar composites. this one pushes through and then we are looking at another one right on the heels of it. and this one a little unpredictable because we have an area of low pressure that wants to move, one forecast model, right over the bay area monday. that should keep some showers going and bring colder air. today in the sierra nevada we have partly cloudy skies. we have rain to the north. still quite a mild air mass in place. 61 in fresno with 60 on the coast, big sir. here's a whack what you can expect the rest of afternoon. notice the clouds are hanging on into the east bay, the south bay, showers around morgan hills. but by 1:00 partly cloudy skies north bay. not out of the question to see a

lingering shower but the bulk of the activity will be out of here and a weak high pressure builds in for much of your sunday. by noontime we are looking at a few more clouds n look what happens by 6:00, 8:00. we are talking about light rain in the north bay. overnight some showers head on through. a few showers left over for your monday morning commute and then colder air behind this system. still partly cloudy with some scattered showers throughout the day tomorrow to start the work week. temperatures today on the cool side, up he were 50s san francisco with low 60s in the east bay and the south bay. morning showers linger through the afternoon here in the santa cruz area and the south bay, but then we will look for the dry period to move on in overnight into the bulk of much of your sunday. and then the next system, a little needier than this last one. maybe a half inch of rain. they are keeping us cool through monday and then the extended outlook looks dry, but you know it isn't -- doesn't really seem

he wants both parties in congress to approve an extension of the payroll tax cuts again. you may recall in december after a great deal of debate, congress only agreed to extend the payroll tax cut for a month. -- or two months. that time is up. without the extension, the payroll taxes will go up for 160 million workers. >> if you are a family making $50,000 a year, that's about $1,000 a year. that's about $40 in every paycheck. i know there are some folks in the town that don't think $40 is not a lot of money, but to a student or a senior trying to stretch the budget a little further, to a parent filling up the tank and looking at rising gas prices, to them it makes all the difference in the world. >> yesterday the president met privately about a group of people in washington who think $40 is not a lot of money. each paid nearly $36,000 to his campaign for the chance to meet with him at a posh hotel near

the white house. the recession continues to dog california. california officials are calling january revenues dispointing. they were 5 1/2 below what governor brown projected in his recently proposed budget. income tax made up the bulk of it, coming in 6% below expectations. the dip is being blamed on lower estimated tax payments and higher than expected tax refunds. the state finance department responded by saying it expects an uptick in revenue come spring time. governor brown is hitting the road for automaker test law. they are unveiling their third car, no one as model x. the car can go from 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds and that's faster than a pour shaw 9 is 1. it inspired a pep talk about california from governor brown for tessla. >> we can work our way out of our mess with creativity and

buy them are. if the record sales hold, classrooms could see an extra $80 million but school finance consultant gordan warns districts if voters reject the tax initiative in november, more cuts are on the horizon. >> our advice is to say what money you do get from the lottery and put that into the reserves that you set aside. don't go spend it. >> that's good advice considering the state controller just announced tax revenues are more than a billion dollars below projections. at lottery headquarters, nannette miranda, abc7 news. this morning six flags discovery kingdom in lovey hoe is hosting -- in vallejo is hosting a job fair. the park needs to fill about 500 seasonal positions before it opens to the public on march 17th. admission reps, ride operators, food workers, guest relations, security guards, even some office jobs in marketing and finance. the job fair is today from ten to three at the university of phoenix campus and that's in fairfield on business center drive. organizers say applicants have to be 16 years of age and are asked to fill out an online application prior to arriving at

that job fair. oakland's police chief said his city has seen 20 shootings in the past week and the department is reaching out to the community for help. one west oakland group is answering that call and trying to break the pattern of violence with pedal power. abc7's leeann has the story. >> bike for life is west oakland's only bike shop. it's also a place where at risk young men and women learn to do hands-on work. the shop is also the home of a nonprofit called one fam, short for family. >> we try to reach the young folks, build community, build dialogue and also teach them conflict resolution skills on there's better ways to handle these conflicts. >> tony coleman founded one fam in 2,000. the bike shop has been around only two years. the bikes are used and bought at auctions and donated. after some repairs they are

sold. it's a way to gain employment skills while incorporating the anti-violence message. >> we were in the community and we were doing a lot of events. and biking was an event that folks were taking on as a sub culture. so we move with the community. >> over the past two years, more than 50 troubled youth have been trained. over the summer it's one of the mayor's summer job sites. the city pace the youth directly. dominik keith mayor works a few hours a week helping fund raise for the nonprofit. the richmond native came here of after dropping out of howard university. >> gave me, i don't know, more meaning to life. i didn't really have a meaning for a moment, and being here made my value life. >> she plans to go back to college in the fall. >> we don't have to blame anybody for our problems. we can solve them ourselves. we want to teach leadership development. we want to -- the kids -- want the kids to have confidence and to have the audacity to change the world. >> this week the nonprofit will be giving away 40 bicycles to

>> welcome back. heavenly mountain resort way up high look over lake tahoe. >> we've been talking about they have snow. they do have snow and they have clouds and they have temperatures cold enough to keep the snow there, at least for a while. we will find out if the storm is coming this way or bringing some snow that way from lisa in a little bit. this very topic because it's been a tough winter so far for the sierra ski resorts. as you know they need a lot of snow but the weather is just part of the problem. the biggest problem they face is public perception. here's dan with the details on this morning's assignment 7 report. >> lake tahoe resorts are suffering from an image problem. most are open and many spent a lot of time and money making snow, but not many customers are showing up. >> it's challenging to convince people we actually do have good conditions and with the snow making and natural snowfall we have a lot of terrain open, more

than 80 trails. >> this is the northstar ski resort taken over by vail resort. it's the same company that owns heavenly. the two resorts, some of tahoe's most extensive snow-making equipment. it is literally saving their season. >> despite the lack of natural snowfall, the investments we've made in the last five or six years in snow-making, it's paid off. >> snow-making allowed them to create this super pipe, the largest one open at lake tahoe now. the big storm a couple weeks ago dramatically increased the snow base. that allowed even more snow-making, and during the past week they have gotten a few more inches of natural snow so conditions are better than most people think. many ski areas won't reveal how business is going, but the california ski industry association said the christmas season was down 40% statewide. the weak season comes after northstar just spent $30 million in improvements, like this new chairlift that opens up a lot more ski area.

>> well, the california ski association points out there are still a couple of months of potential skiing left before spring. keep in mind there have been other years big storms have come in late and saved the season. which turns up the pressure on lisa. >> lisa will let us know if that is going to be happening in the real near future. >> this system is not going to bring precip there but we are looking at another system coming in tomorrow that could bring in a couple inches. >> they are looking forfeit, lisa. >> i know they are looking forfeit. up know, we are looking for several inches of rain here and that's not going to happen either. as we head outside, look at the interesting clouds from the roof camera. we have clouds from low level to about 3,000 feet. so we are looking at some moisture around the bay this morning. the system is weak. it continues to slide to the south and east of us. live doppler 7 hd shows that the activity will be heading south and east, but still a few light showers out there. more in the form of mist and

drizzle than anything. and a little bit closer inspection shows that really the radar having a hard time picking up this low-level moisture, which is anywhere from 2,000 feet are lower. that's why you are seeing it on your windshield, on the road ways, and then it continues to sink south. high pressure will be building in later on today. 51 right now in oakland. it's 49 in fairfield, and we've had a little fog from santa rosa down through mountain view. but, boy, what a warmer start to the day, as much as 11, 12 degrees warmer than yesterday morning. the scattered light showers and then partial afternoon clearing today. we will look for a little more rain to head our way tomorrow evening. that's not until about 8:00. the clouds will be increasing throughout the afternoon. and this system could bring anywhere from a quarter to half-inch of rain. as i said, just a little bit of sierra snow. here's a look at this first weak system. so you will notice that the clouds, a few of them in the sierra nevada, a little moisture to the north around the

mountains of mount shasta. but otherwise this system continues to sink south and not a whole lot to it. so it's a trough, and you will notice here from our satellite and radar imagery it's already pushing over the bay area. it is going to take a couple more hours, and by about 11:00, 12:00 we will see the clouds begin to thin out. quickly behind it the next system, the upper level low may push over the bay area tomorrow bringing a little more rain. 61 fresno with 64 los angeles. partly to mostly cloudy skies here. numbers in the 40s in lake tahoe so definitely not too cold out there. here's a look at the cloud cover. a few areas of mist and drizzle out there through 1:00. even the later afternoon we could see a few light showers. p.m. comes into overnight into the early part of sunday. then by noontime we are looking at increasing clouds north and then they head south. the rain doesn't come until about 8:00 sunday night. more showers overnight. here we are monday morning a few

leftover scattered showers but by the afternoon we are still looking at perhaps east bay light showers and some snow around the mount hamilton. the next system a little more oomph than the one we are look at right now. 61 fremont and san jose for the afternoon. a little bit of rain here and there throughout the early afternoon around gilroy and then 62. here's the first weak system heading out today. the next one mainly overnight. late in the evening tomorrow through the overnight hours and then there's another chance valentine's night into wednesday, with just a little bit more rain. barely significant systems, although the one tomorrow will bring some light to moderate rain. >> the hope is very important. and when you talk about snow on mount hamilton the folks in the sierra are thinking if that's going to get a little, we will get a lot. >> this one is making a little bit and the temperatures are cold so you saw the pictures. it looks good there. >> thanks, lisa.

they shredded it, tossed it out or were trying to do something nepharious with it. >> once more it lets customers change the address on the account, which marlene found even more scary. >> someone could try to get a credit card sent to them based on my credit record. >> she photocopied the mailer and sent the original back to the bank, warning citi not to open an account in her name. when she didn't hear back marlene contacted 7 on your side and we took this to consumer action asking is there a reason to worry? >> usually you would have to have a couple other pieces of the puzzle in order to commit identity theft with just the preapproved credit card application. but for a determined identity thief it's not that hard to determine those pees of the puzzle. >> so we contacted citibank, which investigated right away.
