>> you are looking live at crews working on the upper deck of the bay bridge. the westbound span has been closed all weekend, and the big question tonight, will the span re-open on time? >> take a look behind us. the upper deck -- we just looked, and we want to get to sergio quintana, because there's a news conference and we're finding out the bay bridge may actually open tonight. he is live, and has been

following everything that's going on. >> so, the details are that the bay bridge will be opening the westbound lanes will be opening tonight. they're actually going over some of the details as i speak, as to some of the things that happen helped make the progress, the weather and other factors have been going in their favor. the westbound lanes of the oakland bay bridge will be opening this evening. a barren top deck of the oakland bay bridge. the mark of continued work on the westbound approach in a project that will replace the span. this is what the action looked like on a busy saturday of construction. now, most of the work on the westbound lanes is completed. caltrans says the mostly sunny weekend has been one of the biggest factors in the progress. >> the welcome we -- work we planned were weather-dependent

so we concerned the rain might delay those. but obviously the weather was great. >> there are still plenty of odds and ends to get done before the westbound deck is re-open. traffic on the sap mateo bridge was not a big issue, but over the golden gate bridge it's a different story. >> even though it's a westbound closure, we're seeing the same increase in traffic. very similar volume. >> by mid-day, traffic was already starting to stack up on the golden gate bridge and its approaches. promising a repeat of the crush of traffic they say this weekend. >> typically on a saturday we get 50,000 cars in a 24-hour cycle and we were just under 70,000 cars. so a big leap. >> reporter: now as you can see right now, the upper deck remains closed. there's no traffic coming through. on the lower deck there are still cars going through as they

have been throughout the entire weekend. now, we are still trying to get details as to exactly when the upper deck is going to be re-opening. we understand that actually the target time is around 7:00. that's when the figure they're going to start wrapping this all up, and so traffic is probably going to be heading back westward on this span of the oakland bay bridge that soon. so it's all happening quickly here. reporting live on treasure island, abc-7 news. >> big news. thank you so much. here's a live look at traffic on the golden gate bridge. you can see a decent amount of cars there. and this is the san mateo bridge. moving smoothly there. and the macarthur maze. things are flowing pretty good right now. and the waze traffic tracker is helping people and a half good at. it's live gps data sent by

america building. let's go live to the mass roman. >> reporter: we're here on pine and grant street in chinatown, and this incident has become a tourist attraction and a photo opportunity. you can see there's a huge container and it's full of very heavy equipment. everybody is looking at this thing bus it's dangling off the side of the bank of america building. this started at 2:30 this afternoon. workers are installing window washing gear on the roof of the building, and this is just one load. they have been raising gear up there but workers told us this is the heaviest piece they brought up, weighing 11,000 pounds and it is danging in -- dangling in the air. >> two spools of wire, weights 11,000 pounds, and the winch

snap. at it going to take three and a half hours to get it up and then it will be secure. >> and the danger right now? >> there's no danger. we have everything locked down. >> reporter: there's a two-man crew up there hand-winching this container up the last 50- 50-100 feet. traffic is a mess around the financial district and in chinatown. there are street clues surers ex-keen -- if you don't have any business in this area, police are asking you to please avoid us because traffic is snarled. the police are going to keep the streets closed until that container makes it safely on the roof, and that may be anywhere from three to three and a half hours away. reporting live. abc-7 news. >> thank you. san jose police say a 15-year-old boy is in custody and two others are in the hospital after a gang-related stabbing at east ridge mall.

officers detained two other teens. the attack happened around 7:30 last night. trails were blood were found near macy's and jc penney. >> a man murdered in berkeley, and police found his killer working less than block from the crime scene. the victim's wife called police to report a suspicious man standing outside their home last night. her husband went out to confront him and was fatally assaulted. officers spotted a person matching the suspect description walking near the home. they arrested 23-year-old daniel dewitt of alameda. >> espn fired the writer responsible for the racist headline against jeremy lin. an internal investigation revealed the ethnic slur was written online and used twice on air. >> you said unflappable, but if there a [bleep] in the armor, where can lin improve. >> the espn news anchor is on suspension for 30 days and the espn loyalee behind the slur on

the network's web site has been dismissed. the headline was in reference to lin's nine turnovers during the loss to the new orleans hornets. in his sergeant public pal, espn wrote: his accomplishments are a source of great pride to the asian-american community including the asian-american employees of espn. >> and jeremy lin says he is putting the headline behind him saying you have to learn to forgive. but many lin fans were not as forgiving. >> it's shameful. there's ways to express whatever is happening to him in a more constructive way. i think it's up -- unnecessary. >> was something that shouldn't have happened. >> the fans were gated at the old pro palo alto restaurant and sports bar, cheering on the palo alto native as he led his team to not a big win of the mavericks.

hillman. ♪ >> he founded the annual hardly strictly blue grass festival in golden gate park. he died in december at age 77 of leukemia. his band and emmy lou harris and boz scaggs performed a tribute. >> officials are visiting local african-american churches to promote college. the chancellor charles reed spoke to the congregation at the family bible fellowship church. he spoke with parents and children about what it takes to successfully enter college. >> we have been doing this now for seven years, and we have seen a 25% increase in african-american students applying to the california state university because we have gotten the word out to the communities. >> supersunday is a partnership between csu campuses and

african-american religious leaders. the goal is to increase the number of african-american students students who attend college. >> we have an update on the bay bridge re-opening early. caltrans announced minutes ago the westbound lanes will re-open tonight. crews will begin picking up cones at 7:00, and the deck is expected to open shortly after that. caltrans is urging drivers to use caution when driving through the toll plaza, where is there fresh pavement and the margin configuration has changed. the bay bridge which re-open tonight, well ahead of the original schedule a lot of people are relieved. >> oh, yeah, especially me. i learned my lesson. >> leigh: a lot of this is thank thoaz fabulous weather. crews can do their striping and everything drying. so good news.

here's a live look from the sutro cam towards ocean beach. we started off with clouds. we saw the sunshine, and now the clouds are moving back in. it does look like parts of the bay area will see showers overnight. current reading right now, 50 degrees in san francisco, half moon bay, 48. 57 in the east bay, antioch. 54 in the north bay. napa, 52. and san jose, checking in with 55. here's a look at our highlights. take you in at least to the middle part of the work week. showers to return overnight. we're going with light scattered showers tomorrow night. and then they're not going to amount to much in terms of measurable amount of rainfall, and then after that, a warming trend. 70s. do you like that? they'll return by mid-week. here's a look at how we started off this morning. the clouds started to move in. we even had a little bit of moisture. much of this stayed well off the cost, so not a lot of measurable

amount of precipitation this morning. this is the clearing we are in right now. but a cold front draping to the north and these clouds will start to increase tonight, leading to chance hover -- chance of showers, mainly north of the golden gate bridge, and then some of those will filter south. this is our timing, 5:00. you can see the clearing now. already the clouds starting to move in. by 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 tomorrow morning the bands start to move in, and then 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 tomorrow morning, the showers start to move from north to south, and really that's about it. by 3:00 tomorrow afternoon it's out of here and we should see partial clearing and that will be a nice day by tomorrow afternoon. lows tonight, 45 for san rafael. san francisco, 47. 42 for antioch. livermore, 41. here's the highs for tomorrow. the best chance of seeing the showers will be early tomorrow
