oakland bay bridge, but the weather has been pretty cooperative this weekend so as you mentioned, crews are going to be able to re-open the top deck way ahead of schedule. >> thanks to great teamwork, great support by motorists, and great weather, the bay bridge is going to open tonight. >> reporter: on the second full day without traffic flowing over the top deck of the oakland bay bridge, crews continued their work on the westbound approach and made great progress. so good the bridge is opening more than a day ahead of schedule. most of the really complicated work on the project was done by sunday morning. caltrans says the sunny weekend has been one of the biggest factors in the progress. >> the work is going well, things are on track. we have been able to do the work we planned for. >> only a few odds and ends neat to get done before the westbound deck is re-opened. >> the bridge opens at 7:00, and

i mean we're going to begin picking up cones at 7:00. >> even if construction crews made quick progress, this closure created a squeeze on the other bridges. traffic on the san mateo bridge was not an issue for most of the weekend, but on the golden gate bridge on saturday, some drivers saw an hour delay in both directions. on the bay bridge, where eastbound traffic was open, traffic moved easily. >> last night and friday night we saw a lot of traffic, so cars were slowing. >> reporter: and right now we have been seeing some activity on the top deck of the bridge. a few construction trucks and a couple chp cruisers driving up and down, probably in preparation of them picking up the cones, because within the next hour or so, traffic should be flowing back again westward on the top deck. reporting live, i'm sergio

quintana, abc-7 news. >> during the last 48 hours traffic has been heavy, especially for those trying to get into san francisco. the golden gate bridge has seen nearly twice as many drivers as usual. lillian kim is live with the latest out there. >> reporter: as was the case yesterday, traffic has been slow going heading to and from the golden gate bridge, this is doyle drive. the road leading up to the bridge. it's been nothing but stop and go all day. it's unclear why it is heading out of san francisco since the lower deck of the bay bridge is open. it's only the upper deck is closed. perhaps it's confuse, and it's a holiday weekend and many tourists are visiting the bridge. regardless, drivers have been sitting in their cars longer than they're used to on this stretch of 101. >> it's crazy. i didn't expect it to be this busy because of the holidays. >> been pretty much stop and go

for the last three or four miles. >> how long has it been taking you? >> probably about close to 20-25 minutes to go three miles. >> how are you enjoying it? >> a nice rental car on a beautiful california day. i'm loving it. >> no figures for today but yesterday there were 20,000 more cars on the golden gate bridge than a typical saturday. >> thank you so much. here's a look at other spots tonight. traffic on the san mateo bridge is at least flowing, a lot of cars out there. but it's moving. let's take a look at i-80. look at all the cars. but fortunately again, the bridge will be opening later tonight. about an hour or so. things should be lightening up on the roadways. >> you can also check on traffic conditions anytime with the inclusive abc-7 waze app. you can see the trouble spots

from drivers that feed the site with real-time data. to become a traffic spotter, go to our web site and download the waze app to your smartphone. >> developing news in san francisco, crane came loose and is dangling off a highrise. it's happening at the corner of california and kearny street. here's the latest. >> reporter: we are here in chinatown and this incident somewhat of a tourist attraction. that is a container holding about five tons of mechanical equipment and is dangling off the side of the bank of america building. now, this incident happened about 3 and a-1/2 hours ago. workers are installing new window washing equipment on the

roof but this is the heaviest low they have lifted so far and it proved to much for the winch on the crane. that container weighs 11,000-pounds and is dangling 500 feet in the air of the street. we spoke with the sfpd. >> it contains two spools of wierks weighing about 11,000 pounds, and the winch snap, so now they have to hand-crank it. 100 feet, going to take three hours, three and a half hours, and then it will be secure. >> the danger right now is? >> there's no danger right now. we have everything locked down. traffic and pedestrians out of the area, officers on the corners to make sure nobody gets in here. >> we're told there are two men at least winching the container up by hand the last 50-70 feet. it's only moved 20 feet in the last hour. it's caused traffic jams all over the financial district and chinatown. kearny street is closed from

bush to sacramento. pine and california are closed from grant to montgomery, and police say if you don't have any business in the year, you're advised to stay away because this is a real traffic snarl. now, police say no one has been hurt but they're making sure to keep the streets clear, and they're going to keep them clear until the container is safely up on the roof and that may take another two and a half hours. reporting live in san francisco. abc-7 news. >> in the east bay, 23-year-old alameda man is in custody tonight on suspicion of murdering an elderly man in the berkeley hills. police got a call just before 9:00 last night of a suspicious person trespassing in the grizzly peek boulevard area. a man walked out of his house and was beaten to death. police arrested the suspect a few blocks away. >> seemingly suspicious prowler attacked the home owner outside the property, and rendered that

person dead, is extremely unusual for the city of berkeley. >> there's no word on exactly how that elderly map was killed -- elderly man was killed or his identity. the suspect is daniel jordan dewitt of alameda. >> tragedy struck a washington state ski resort knee stevens pass. the victims were part of 12 people hit be the avalanche. the rest dug themselves out, but the rest were swept 1500 feet down an out-of-bounds canyon. another woman was swept out but was saved bay safety device she was wearing. >> saying goodbye, the final journey for whitney houston. >> the controversy isn't over but tonight what espn says it's doing to try to make it up to jeremy lin. >> celebrating carnival with a twist. what's new this year coming up.

cross scent -- crescent city, our -- eureka, and then the bay area tomorrow morning. tonight, thickening clouds, and after midnight, 2:00, 3:00, when the first bands start to reach the north bay, ukiah, santa rosa, san rafael by 2:00 a.m. and then it slowly sags south, and 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, showers starting to move into the east bay. the peninsula. as well as santa cruz. not a lot of moisture with this. not going to stick around very long. in fact by 4:00, 5:00 tomorrow afternoon, get ready for partial clearing and probably squeeze in some sunshine as well. so, tonight, overnight temperatures, warmer thanks to the clouds coming in. mid-to-low 40s across the bay area. after the midnight hour the showers move in highs for monday. morning showers, afternoon partial clearing, mid-to up
