we begin with breaking news from afghanistan. growing unrest over what the u.s. is calling a horrifying mixup. u.s. soldiers mistakenly burned old copies of in the koran, something muslims never do. u.s. and nato officials have issued profuse apologies. >> this morning, that rage is spreading. nick schifrin joins us live with more. what is the latest? >> reporter: good morning, rob. good morning, paula. this is real fury on the veets. outside one of the largest u.s. bases, hundreds of people were throwing rocks. they set fire to a tanker. the guards had to fire guns into the air. police have fired into the crowd. some of the shops have been attacked. cars have been attacked.

there has been some looting. that leaves troops, diplomats inside afghanistan on lockdown. those in the embassy are not allowed out. there are fears this will get worse. the protests have spread already outside of kabul in the base where the kor rans were mistakenly burned. four citie seeing protests. one turned deadly. one protester has died. >> several u.s. officials have apologized. is that likely to squelch any of the tension or will the flames continue to be fand over the next few days? >> reporter: it's not going to stop the tension. it will probably get worse on friday after prayers. many afghans are upset that there's still a lo t on violence in the country. many have long doubted whether the united states respects islam. these kinds of accidents, even

though they are accidents, even though the u.s. officials have gone out of their way to submit apologies, these accidents infuriate muslims and tap into a level of anti-americanism in afghanistan. that's what we're seeing on the streets today. >> our thoughts and prayers with all the military and american personnel jefr seas. thanks, nick. we're following another developing story right now. iran has failed to reach an agreement with the u.n. nuclear watchdog group. >> they left iran after they were refused access to a site where they believe nuclear weapons testing to be taking place. another developing story. this one here at home. a bizarre story. five people were killed last night at a spa in the town of norcross, georgia.

act now, act now! like he said... ♪ welcome back, everyone. despite the dow's surge, overseas markets were mixed overnight. tokyo's nikkei average picked up 91 points today. hong kong's hang seng added 71. in london, the ftse opened lower. on wall street, the dow gained 16 points yesterday. after spending some of the day above 13,000. the nasdaq fell 3 points.

seven people were killed. dozens injured. sugarland's attorney says that fans failed to look after their own safety and that the band was not responsible for warning fans about the storm that ultimately brought that stage down. jurors today begin deciding the fate of former university of virginia lacrosse player george huguely. he's accused of killing his former girlfriend, yeardley love two years ago. his attorney is hoping to avoid a murder conviction and has ak nonled that huguely did have a role in love's death. a passing to note. the long-time mentor of end in patriots quarterback tom brady has died. tom martinez worked with brady since he was in high school in california. tom brady was working with martinez to spread the word about organ donation. tom martinez died yesterday after suffering a heart attack during a dialysis session. he was 66 years old. now some highlights from the hard wood from espn news. i'm chris cotter with your espn news update. a big night in college basketball.
