on the days they pause to look back, a country observing a moment of silence the moment the quake struck, and at a memorial service tokyo, vowed to never forget. waves hit the coast and killed nearly 20,000 people last march. this coastal communities are empty fields. the mountains of debris brushed aside. >> this is the spot where the video was shot on march 11th. you can recall the black waves crashing over this wall, tossing the cars on the road aside as the water flooded the city, and a year later, it's remarkable to see just how normal things look now. the cleanup has been the easy part. at the elementary school where 74 students died the grieving hasn't stopped. survivors are in treasure temporary units. near the nuclear plant, the

12-mile exclusion zone is still offlimits, 80,000 people can't return until crews clear nuclear waste from their homes. there are new lives helping to heal the wounds, this boy, born right after the tsunami, is beginning to walk, his doctor was trapped by his side, he said my son gives me the strength to move forward every day. >> people are also remembering the tragedy right here in the bay area. john alston is live in san francisco with those memorials. >> reporter: everything back to normal here in japan town's peace plaza. earlier this was a solemn gathering place to remember the anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami and toles look to -- also to look to the future. they paused for a moment of silence at 2:46 p.m. the same time of day the

disaster struck a year ago in japan. of course that catastrophe killed more than 19,000 people. it hit home here in san francisco, where this large japanese-american population. there's a feeling now the focus needs to be on rebuilding now that the solemn ceremonies are over. >> it was very emotional. i couldn't help but think of the tragedies that happened a year ago and the things that still need to be done. >> because we're now in the next phase. the one-year anniversary. i think japan and people are ready to move ahead to the rebuilding process. so right now the challenge is to get volunteers to come and help with the rebuilding process. >> reporter: today activists were showcasing the nadia project to get volunteers from the tows help japan rebuild and perhaps get some unemployed americans to go to japan to help

that country rebuild from the dollars. there are more than 300,000 people living in temporary housing there. debris is still in pilesle the japanese prime minister says it could take perhaps ten years to finally fully rebuild that portion of the country, but near san francisco, the aim was just to let people know, in japan, they're not forgotten. live in san francisco, abc-7 news. >> the tsunami created from the quake powered across the pacific, causing millions of dollars in damage along the west coast. self waves crashed into the santa cruz harbor. 23 docks sustained damage. hundreds of boats were damaged and a dozen capside. one year later repairs are underway. federal dollars aid is make for most of it two docks are restored and commercial docks are being built in an television of othing salmon season. >> the rain is back and more is on the way.

woman slammed her vehicle into a power pole. it happened in concord just before 5:00 a.m. the woman is suspected of drunk driving. she had a trial with -- child with her. >> investigators think an overloaded outlet may have caused a deadly house fire in alameda. kenneth and his dog were found dead inside the home. it took 40 minutes to put out the fire that crews say started in kitchen last night. >> a fire in the sonoma county community took the life of an elderly woman. fire officials say she died five feet from the front door of her home. a police officer tried to save her and kicked in the front door but couldn't get inside because of the heat from the flames. she had already died by the time firefighters arrived. >> coming up, the search continues for a bay area man missing for more than a week. >> it was the backdrop in the movie top gun, now it's the last vowage of the uss enterprise.

>> search and rescue teams were looking for man missing for 11 days. joseph mchenry was last seen a week ago fridayle the former marine told friends he was going rock climbing and camping. volunteers gathered to begin the search. his car was found in a nearby neighborhood. >> we're searching the ocean blues along the coast here as well as the inland areas from the bluffs and that's an area he indicated he was possibly going to go camping. >> searchers found several items on thursday that belonged to mchenry. this is he third search for the

>> thieves stole $3,000 worth of baseball equipment from a petaluma little league team. they broke into the space last night. they took two pitching machines, a chalkline machine and some protective equipment. petaluma valley is not the only little trying be hit by thieves.

there have been numerous break-ins at neighboring parks. >> a new warning about mail theft in monterey county sheriff's department officials have received increasing reports of mail and identity theft. don't send money through the mail, pick up your mail as soon as you can and have the post office hold your mail when you're on vacation. >> gas prices are creeping up across the country. the increase has been fueled by fears that efforts that curb iran's nuclear program could spark a military confrontation in the middle east in the bay area, aaa says a gallon of regular costs an average of 4.41 in san francisco, up a cent and a half. across the state, santa barbara has the highest average price per gallon of regular, 4.43. the lowest price is yuba city, 4.24. >> it was service over self in san francisco today to bring

beauty to a neighborhood. the rotary club of san francisco planted several trees where holly court is located, the oldest public housing site in the city. volunteers beautified the patch of san francisco with a tree-planting. the trees connect to adjoining properties to a nature walk. >> san francisco closed down the embarcadero today so people can enjoy the first first "sunday s" event of the season. they create a public space. the event encourages a healthy community and a lot of fun. >> i enjoy it. we try to get out to each other, whether it's in the mission or over on the -- wherever they happen to be at. >> organizers say "sunday streets" helps local businesses because of the increased foot traffic and gives people a chance to enjoy the street and explore neighborhoods. >> that one little kid with the

but tomorrow is really the go-to-it do. check the gutters, tarp the roof because we're talking rain, heavy at times. tuesday night, wednesday, and possibly even thursday and friday. more details coming up in a moment. here's a look at the little system. just kind of fell apart. made its way across the bay area. here's the lingering effects. and we might keep a few little bit of mist and drizzle. there's a little moisture out there. we'll keep that in the forecast overnight. otherwise, look for breaks in the overcast. temperatures drop into the mid-to upper 30s in the north bay. elsewhere, 40-degree temperatures overnight. this is the break we get tomorrow. do what you need to do. cover furniture up or what have you, and prepare because you can see the storm track really developed out to the west of is. this storm system will bring us rain, heavy at times, tuesday and wednesday, and then there's another one developing behind

that which will bring us more rain, heavy at times, thursday night and friday. i'm going to go ahead and show you the forecast model. this is 6:00 monday. monday we're going to be dry. we'll see the clouds thicken up. this is 2:00 a.m. tuesday. you can see the first batch of rain starting to move in very heavy rainfall starting to effect the north bay by tuesday afternoon. this is 5:00. and then check out wednesday. very heavy rainfall. this is 5:00 a.m. wednesday. just a train of heavy rain just making its way slowly across the bay area. we're talking rainfall potential through wednesday night. three to five inches-north bay, as much a two or three inches. these are just estimates. the peninsula and south bay, lesser amounts, santa cruz, two to three inches. the storm will effect the sierra obviously two to three feet of snow expected above the

7,000-foot level and that's tuesday through wednesday. 6:00 to 58 inches of snow at lake level, and by wednesday afternoon, the snow level will be rising above the 7,000-foot level so lake level wednesday afternoon, rain-snow mix. here's the highs for monday. upper 50s to low 60s, increasing clouds across the bay area. the first batch of heavy rain moves in tuesday night, look for rain, heavy at times, very strong winds developing on wednesday, a little break thursday morning, more rain, heavy at times, thursday night and friday, and then everything turns cold, very low snow levels next weekend. >> thank you, leigh. >> the dates have been chosen for the big dance. >> mike: like prom night in the ncaa basketball. the cal bears lost three of their last four games about ended the year with 24 wins. that turned out to be enough. they got their insatellite big dance. they'll be in facing south florida in a play yip game for the 12th seed. there's 68 teams.
