soldier. >> the taliban released a statement overnight vowing revenge. >> abc's tahman bradley joins us. >> reporter: hi paula and t.j. the president of afghanistan called the shooting an assassination, a suspect is in custody. photos from the scene show the carnage. as many as 16 afghans including nine children and three women gunned down in the middle of the night. they killed a child says this mother.nato officials believe a army staff sergeant apparently carrying an automatic weapon and a pistol, left his base, went to a nearby village and shot victims at random. >> we can say definitively that this was an individual acting alone, not with authority. and we also have the individual, the suspect, in custody. u.s. custody. >> reporter: this morning,

investigators are interrogating the alleged shooter, a 38-year-old soldier from'lewis, washington. in a statement, president obama said the incident is tragic and shocking and does not represent the exceptional character of our military and the respect the united states has for the people of afghanistan. >> i can't think of anybody in the world who would say that killing 16 women and children is okay anywhere in the world. much like when you're waving that american flag. >> reporter: the shooting rampage comes a month after u.s. personnel were seen burning korans. they worry this incident could further strain the relationship. >> it's going to complicate missions most definitely. >> reporter: public support for the long decade-long war remains low. a new abc news poll taken before the shooting found 60% of americans say the war is not worth fighting and 54% say theis who withdraw at once. the suspect is marded father of

what happened, but they are going to look into mental stability. was he suffering from posttraumatic stress? you've seen in the military over the years, a huge spike in suicides, a huge spike in posttraumatic stress. so, yes, that's exactly what they'll be looking at. >> so many questions still to be answered. we'll get a live update from the white house later this morning on "good morning america." and rising gas prices are hurting president obama in the polls. an abc news poll released overnight finds that 65% disapprove of the way mr. obama is handling the issue. just 38% approve of the way he's handling the economy. but it doesn't seem to be hurting the president's re-election chances. 54% of those polled thought that mr. obama would win in november. only 40% thought that republicans would win. and the president's most likely opponents is celebrating a milestone birthday on the campaign trail. mitt romney is spending his 65th birthday in alabama, ahead of that state's primacy tomorrow. the polls show the race between

welcome back, everyone. and there is a glimmer of hope on gas prices this morning. aaa reports a gallon of regular gas is now at $3.79 a gallon. it is 30 cents more than a month ago, but the increases making slowing, only 3 cents in the past week. west coast refineries are coming back online after regular maintenance and oil prices are down. well, hard to believe but swiss voters this weekend turned down extra paid vacation. a referendum would have

increased the minimum annual holiday from four weeks to six. the government and businesses have warned that would increase costs and put the swiss economy at risk. things are looking up for young job seekers. their unemployment rate fell to the lowest level in three years, with 116,000 new jobs. that 25 to 34-year age group has been hit hard by the recession but it is considered a key part of the economy. and tokyo nikkei fell 40 porters. hong kong's hang seng was off 46 in lod london, the ftse opened higher. and the wall street opened higher. the nasdaq index gained 12. and if you have not ordered a new ipad already, you may not have it this weekend. the demand have been, quote, off the charts. apple says it will not ship for two or three weeks. the alternative is to camp out outside an apple store if you

"the lorax" was top. again making it the top-grossing movie so far this year. it sold $39 million. in tickets for a two-weekend total of $122 million. "john carter" opened in second with a disappointing $31 million. "project x" was third with $12 million. and next on this monday morning, is it a dream team for denver fans? what are the chances of manning and tebow on the same team? and a month after whitney houston's death, her daughter defends her mom's image in a first interview with who else, oprah winfrey. se, but oprah winfrey. i tried it and my body felt so right, for a change. and then there's you... why should i try it? my system gets out of sorts but that comes with age, right? wouldn't you like to feel great? just because we're in that over 50... what does that mean? are we done?

but this just in. we can't blame slacker husbands or killer jobs anymore. >> women are still holding themselves to these standards that require that they're responsible for so much of what goes on at home, while really performing at work. >> come on. >> reporter: that's right. a surprising new survey by "real simple" magazine say women need to look in the mirror to find the real culprit. we say our biggest impetments to free time are helicopter mothering, hovering over our kids and house work. most say our husbands can and are willing to handle house work and especially to kids. but we don't delegate. we're perfectionists. 28% of us say we don't think it will get done right. and we hate cleaning but 45% wouldn't pay to outsource it if we could. let's be honest, we do it all because we can. we're good at all of it. but our tension over time can create high levels of cortisol,
