>> in the news this saturday morning, march 24th, five people found dead in san francisco. police trying to figure out who did it, why, and how. and today search and rescue teams in the south bay will dramatically expand their search for missing teenager here in -- sierra lamar. good morning, i'm terry mcsweeney. the weekend is here. >> it's going to be a wet won. here's lisa. >> you can see it looks misty and gray. we are looking at the rain finally approaching the north bay. and into san francisco. here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. the low is far to the north and west of us, but it continues to

pull up the moisture. and just within the last half-hour we've been looking at rain sinking south into marin county. it's been in cloverdale and santa rosa butch now as we get a closer inspection you notice the light green just about to push into the city. it is off the coast, the san mateo coast, so we are continuing to see the eastward and southward progress of this front and it is going to stick around for the entire weekend. i'll have those details in a little bit. terry. >> lisa, thanks very much. >> thanks. homicide investigators continue to comb through a house near san francisco city college. five people were found dead. they were discovered early yesterday morning by a relative of four of the victims. police say it's a complicated crime scene and can't say just for sure how the victims died. some friends. -- some friends of the family set up a memorial. they identified the victims.

abc7 spoke with neighbors, including one who said he heard loud noise at 2:00 in the morning. >> i actually heard like a boom sound and someone yelled like very distinctly "get down on the ground now" like in a very authoritative voice. stand watch, guarding this home near city college. >> we have a genuine tragedy at 16 howth street. >> five adults were found dead inside. a family member found the body. >> there's a female victim upstairs, a female victim downstairs, two victims in the garage, and there's a male victim on the threshold of the door. >> some of the victims may have been shot. police do not believe there is anyone at large or anyone else in danger. >> it was pretty traumatic to hear the gravity and the magnitude of what happened.jf >> this woman lives across the street and said she heard something.

>> i did hear around midnight some very loud male person arguing or yelling. >> mo lives right next door to the house. he didn't hear anything until the morning. >> someone screaming saying help me, help me. >> the house is owned by software engineer. he knows her as his landlord. >> they are polite. if he help me out. >> we don't know if the homeowner was dead. even though the incident was contained to the house they are investigating all possibilities. >> we want to get it right. we want to find out exactly what happened. we are going to take our time doing it. >> again, we don't know for sure if that home owner is dead. the coroner has not released the we are going to take our time doing it. >> again, we don't know for sure if that home owner is dead. the coroner has not released the names, but the friend is saying she was among the dead. you see what's left of this memorial here. the people who came were burning

incense and money for them to spend on the other side as well as food for them to eat. in san francisco, abc7 news. >> a private party at the golf course ended in violence last night with the victim being stabbed. the victim had to be airlifted to the hospital shortly before midnight. police were called in to control the crowd of hundreds, leaving the chardonnay golf course. >> we are to get everybody out of here. the cops and medics are pushing everybody out. >> it's insane right now. >> what was the event going on? >> just a birthday party. >> yeah, a birthday party. >> and it turned into a big fight. >> police were initially outnumbered, but the crowd left quickly when extra officers showed up. that left investigators with little information on suspects or what exactly led up to the stabbing. in san leandro investigators are following up on leads after a young woman was found

murdered. she was found stabbed to death in the driveway of her home at best avenue. police say she was specifically targeted and they are looking for a silver car at the crime scene. her name has not released but she was in her early 20s. it's been 8 days since a morgan hill girl vanished and today they will search a wider area. sierra lamar hasn't been seen or heard from since she left her house friday morning. she never made it on her school bus. friends at her former high school in fremont held a vigil last night. >> more than 400 family and friends crowded the entrance at washington high school at fremont. it's her former high school. some are former friends of sierra who has been missing since friday. >> every day it's getting longer. we just want her home. >> sierra's mother, marlene, was

touched by the support. >> i am so moved by this. i know she's going to move. this she's going to come back to us. >> the 15-year-old disappeared after leaving for school in morgan hill. since then the santa clara county sheriffs have conducted an intense search. her surround being neighborhood nor any signs of the missing teen. on sunday they found her cell phone near the home and her purse with pants and a t-shirt in a field. they blocked offer an intersection and asked people if they had driven by the area a week ago. field workers in the area asked if they had noticed anything. >> friday was a rainy day. by here we used to be working back there and we haven't seen anything. >> before the a family went into the crowd lighting candles, they made a tearful plea for sierra to come home. >> we love you.

hang in there, don't give up, because we are coming for you. we are going to find you. >> sierra's friends took up a collection to the crowd to see if they could raise enough money to start a reward fund to bring their friend home. abc7 news. the search for a missing former marine, joseph mchenry, resumes this morning in pacifica with some high profile help. a state senator will help. leyland yi, including 20 of his marine buddies. they can searching for him soon after he was reported missing back on march 5th. his found was found near the sharp park golf course. a backpack, believed to be his, was found on a nearby beach. the wife of suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi is heading to visit her sick father tomorrow.

of cancer and is undergoing therapy. the visit was approved by the court judge. on monday the sheriff pleaded guilty to a maryland count of false imprisonment. wednesday he was suspended without pay by mayor ed lee, who wants him out of office. the initial charges stems from an argument over lopez's desire to take their son to venezuela >> coming up next, president calls for the country to do some soul searching after the shooting of a florida teenager. and a man is being held without bail after police say he tried to go through a sacramento international security checkpoint with four loaded guns.

chuck severson, abc news. tied into that story, in oakland the allen temple baptist church is inviting people to wear hoody as in his memory tomorrow morning. a man is being held without bail and facing federal charges for trying to carry on guns in sacramento. 45-year-old harold waller was trying to board a us airways flight to folks for a little getaway after driving from montana. he was arrested on the airport thursday when tsa screeners looked in his bags. >> he was in possession at the terminal of four semi-automatic handguns. one he was carrying and three split between two bags. >> authorities don't believe he meant to harm anyone, but they did find eight more guns in his car. waller's mother said her son has not been thinking clearly lately and she said the divorced father of two was in sacramento to pick up new medication for depression.

bald eagles have returned to the peninsula and it's been a long time coming. there is a nest at the end of the reservoir. bald eagles populations are again flourishing and no longer need protection under the federal endangered species act. but state protections are still in place. the last confirmed sighting before this recent one, 1915. >> that's a beautiful picture of america's bird really. >> we are looking at a lot of wet pavement. the morning hours it is going to get going. not wet everywhere. ,wily, it doesn't look like they are looking at any rain. we have it in the north bay and it will spread to the east bay and south bay throughout the morning hours and it will stick around for most of the weekend. i'll tell you which day will be dryer next. >> all right. also next, could indiana knock off kentucky for the second time this season? and advance to the elite 8?

consistent. i think you can say that. >> yes. it looks like the rain will stick around once it pushes in. it's already with us in the north bay and parts of the east bay. the sierra, it's not a big snowmaker. we will see a little bit of snow on the west slopes of the sierra nevada by tomorrow. but as for today it's in the 40s. not too chilly. the snow, it is pretty fresh. we look for a couple more inches by monday morning. right now back home, the live shot from sutra shows it's rainy out there. it will push over into law lay hoe and livermore but right now it's pulled up and most of the activity is in sonoma, cloverdale, santa rosa -- i said that, vallejo and down too marin county. san francisco getting your head wet and just about over into berkeley right now.

we will be look for the light and moderate rain to stay with us throughout the day. daly city, to montara. just the beginning edge right now. as the low continues to sink south looks like it will get hunger here, right around san francisco and bones south through the afternoon and evening hours. that's why we are looking at the rain to stay through much of the rain today, wrap-up tomorrow. so part of your sunday, most of your sunday does look dryer. 50 in red radioed city. it's 450 with gusty winds. san francisco and half moon bay, watch out for airport delays developing. southeast winds gusting to 31 miles an hour. hayward, oakland, 22 miles an hour gusts. down by mountain view reporting light rain. the win not much of a factor in santa rosa and the delta. this is out ahead of the stem. wet and cool this weekend. the main focus of the rain will be today but we have several more chances next week as the storm door remains open.

and we will see unsellinged weather. so the first system coming down from the gulf of alaska. lake county, you will see some lower snow levels and temperatures here will stay in the 50s. 8:00 we have rain all across the bay a couple of pockets of heavier rain down through the santa cruz mountains. the higher elevations pick up most of the rain. by 2:00 the front is still sitting over us and what we call a little wave could develop on it. that would allow it to sit here through the evening hours. through the overnight hours it becomes more scattered. 8:00 tomorrow morning we have the rain chances pretty good around the bay. but throughout the afternoon it turns into showers and by, oh, 4:00 we are looking pretty dry around the entire bay. but between now and 11:00 tomorrow night, one to two inches, pretty hefty north bay. santa cruz mountains up to 3 inches. peninsula, and east bay, half-inch to inch in the south

bay. the snow getting going by the overnight hours tonight into monday morning. about half a foot in some spots in the sierra nevada west slopes. low to mid-50s today with 52 livermore, 54 gilroy. even though we are talking about a half in top an inch, we are still only about 30, 50% of normal for this time of year. so will see a chance on monday. we will be dry through tuesday. tuesday and wednesday looks wet and maybe the storm track wants to push north thursday and friday. go ahead and laugh. >> there i go. >> good morning. i'm terry mcsweeney. president obama is pressuring congress to fund jobs created by the bipartisan transportation bill. he said 90% of the jobs created by the bill are for middle class workers. the senate passed the bill with support from both sides of the isle. but the president fears construction jobs will suddenly stop if the house doesn't follow suit.

>> in a matter of days funding will stop for all sorts of transportation projects. construction sites will go idle, workers will have to go home and our economy will take a hit. this congress should not let it happen, not at a time when when we should do everything in our power, democrats and republicans, to keep the country moving forward. >> house republicans are divided over the five-year, $260 billion spending package. >> state senator leyland yi wants to have people stop asking people for pass words to their social media sites. he introduced legislation yesterday to prevent that. our capital correspondent nannette miranda has more from sacramento. >> most people looking for a job here at the employment development office say they are uncomfortable giving hiring managers their social media pass wards that give them access to private profiles. ashley clarke said that demand is ridiculous. >> i don't like people in my

privacy, in my business. whatever goes on in my life goes on in my life. >> but asking for passwords has become a trend. with so many employed, companies feel they can be picky and want to know more about their candidate. a facebook account could have unflattering pictures from vegas or information about recreational drug use. >> it is a form of coercion. >> desperate job seekers might feel obligated to hand overpass words in exchange for a paycheck. >> when it comes to feeding one's family and taking care of one's family, that is always the highest priority. and a lot of us would prioritize that over privacy concerns. >> the state senator yi said that's not right and has introduced legislation that would ban companies and government agencies in california to asking appearly

-- applicants and current employees for their passwords. >> you can't violate my privacy by say you need that information. you have to get it from another way, another source. >> the practice seems more prevalent in the public sector, especially law enforcement. >> we don't ask for passwords. we ask for access. >> those who don't ask, ask to be friended on facebook, and denying access raises questions. >> that's one of the red flags we look at. we want to see why don't they want to share those things about us? is there anything you are hiding. >> facebook made it clear today it does not approve of anyone asking for passwords, telling users you should never have to share your password, let anyone access your account or do anything to jeopardize the security of your account or violate the privacy of your friends. facebook even win as far as saying it might help senators pass legislation like yi's or to introduce legislation to protect users' pass wards. california's unemployment

rate held steady last month at 10.9%. while the bay area has some of the lowest rates in the state, one city has a chronic problem with high unemployment. laura anthony explains. >> keith is among oakland's many unemployed. from where he sits things aren't getting much better. >> from your perspective is it getting easier to find a job? >> no, it's not getting easier. to me it's about the same. >> unemployment numbers may be improving in the bay area, but oakland still has one of the highest jobless rates in the state. >> there are less businesses leaving the city of oakland, but there is still a reluctance that we have noticed of employers to employ new people. >> in february, 2011, oakland's unemployment rate was 16.1%. this year it's 14.4%. like other parts of the state, oakland has seen job growth in construction, healthcare and retail. but not much or none in the professional sector.

>> sometimes not even replies, especially on websites like craig's list. >> finding a job is especially challenging for young minority applicants between age 18 and 30. in oakland nearly one-third of them remain unemployed. >> a lot of them are coming from a school system that's still struggling with graduation rates and the other factor is the high rate of crime in oakland and the high rate of gang involvement. >> michael. >> at least some oakland job seekers are finding a path to possible success. at east bay, 15 people graduated from a college program called waterways. it's 20 years of plumber training that prepares graduates to work for east bay mud or some other employer. >> i'm very excited because i do plumbing through the navel reserves but it's a chance to move it over to the civilian side of work and this program helps me a lot. >> now oakland is not alone. some other east bay cities with

high unemployment rates, pittsburgh and richmond top 15%, san pablo more than 19%. in oakland, laura anthony, abc news. a quarter of the staff working for the business arm of the america's cup race in san francisco have been laid off. the cuts come as race organizers finalize a new agreement with the city for holding the race next year. the new deal significantly down sizes the event and that in turn led to staff predictions. -- reductions. 28 employees got the bad news yesterday morning. 14 work with the city. the other 14 are overseas or jobs, internet technology and communications. bad news for students of city of college ever san francisco. they are delaying summer school by two weeks and cutting enrollment by as many as 3600 students. they are trying to close a budget gap of nearly $5 million. staff and administrators are taking furlough days and the faculty is accepting a

retroactive pay cut. state health officials have ordered a recall of raw milk produced at a northern california dairy. bacteria that can cause cramps and other problems was found in raw cream produced at the farm. the company voluntarily stopped statewide distribution last monday. if you purchased any of their products with a code date of march 27th, they should be thrown out. >> lisa argen joins us now, talking about rain and we will be talking about it for a while. >> yeah. it's just beginning to move into the east bay. it's already in the north bay. it's light rain. it will stay relatively light but we will look at the winds picking up as well out ahead of it. that's the key. ite going to take some time getting here and moving out. i'll explain next. >> also ahead, a dangerous walk to school. the sidewalk 20 years in the making, it's only halfway done. >> and now it looks like it may never be finished.

>> we are look at the embarcadero. the golden glow of the streets. you see the flags blowing: and for an explanation what all that means to you for at least this weekend, and it looks like for many days to come, lisa joins us to tell us about it >> it's been a big tees up until now. still in the south bay we aren't looking at any rain. but two ortiz three hours delayed this precip band that's beginning to move in. we are looking at the light rain in the north bay. this is recommend iville right now. a little breezy out ahead of the front. rain continues to fall lightly across the bay. that's the key. that's why we are going to pick up so much between today and tomorrow. it is going to be very light, at times moderate rain, especially down around the santa cruz mountains and it's all because of an area of low pressure that and going to be slow and moving out. live doppler 7 hd shows that the rain continues to push up from the south so we are finally getting wet. all of the north bay into the

east bay, into san francisco. some very light rain. but it has been raining the past few hours up to the north around cloverdale, petaluma, sonoma, roner park. so these areas will pick up most of the rain in terms of a couple of inches. so it's going to take a while for it to continue to press to the south and east but once it does we will see the light rain throughout the day lingering. daly city and san bruno just about getting your heads wet and not quite here. we will look for a rainy afternoon in the south bay and the santa cruz mountains, along monterey as well. 54 is the warm spot in oakland. a mild start to the day. much milder than yesterday. we are looking at cool 40s but with it some gusty winds. up to 41 miles an hour, hay wad and oakland. airport delays of 1:57 at sfo. winds gusting to 17 along the coast and breezy in mountain view as we.

the rain continues to push on into the bay. the next couple of hours. it will be wet over the weekend. tomorrow the low heads out and it will get kicked out because it needs another push as this system here will just be sitting over us for the next 24 hours or so. so through 8:00 everybody is look at the wet weather through the delta, into the sacramento valley. a few heavier pockets here. we will take you through the rest of the morning. you will notice the front and the light rain continues through 5:00. then the heavy rain looks like it's going to shift south from san francisco, into the santa cruz mountains to the overnight hours a couple of breaks. still look at the rain through 8:00 monday morning. the light rain. and it becomes more iffy around the bay. and then by the afternoon, noon, 1:00, it heads on out of here. just a chance left for monday. that looks dry. but through 11:00 sunday night, up to three inches in the santa cruz mountains. three quarters inch to an inch and a half, east bay and peninsula. with it coming down so light and

so continuous for 48 hours, that's why the totals are going to pick up. the accumulation is going to look pretty significant. four to six inches through 5:00 monday morning. so the snow, well, it will be cold enough but a lot of the moisture hanging back west of the sierra nevada. so low to mid-50s for today. cool and breezy with rain all throughout the bay and along the central coast. we will get a chance of showers into monday. it becomes more likely on tuesday everywhere, and wednesday. and then hopefully the storm track shifts north thursday and friday. boy, a real wet time of it, but only still just 50% of normal for most of us here. >> all right, lisa. thanks a lot. for a while it looked like kids in sonoma would have a safer walk to go school. for a while. the sidewalk being built after we called attention to the danger is suddenly at a dead stop. what happened? here is heather with the story.

>> these new sidewalks and street lights appear to be simple additions to highway 12 in a sonoma county springs neighborhood, but it took 20 years of work by residents and politicians to get them, in part because county improvements on a state highway involve layers of bureaucracy. they are small improvements making a big difference in pedestrian safety and community pride. he has lived here for 30 years. >> it's a waste. we come from waste hot springs and damn proud of it. >> the project is only half done. it's supposed to cover a two mile stretch just north of the city of sonoma. with phase one completed, phase two is in jeopardy since jerry brown's budget dissolved all 400 state redevelopment agencies on the 21st. -- or february 1st. >> i think it was unintended consequences of the state legislature. i don't think anybody intended for it to happen. >> the former advisory chair steve cox has been fighting for the sidewalks since his now college-age son was in kindergarten.

school children and moms with strollers navigate the narrow shoulders daily on a highway that's become more and more congested over the years. phase two was fully funded with community taxpayer money. the only fully funded, vetted and certified state project ready to go out for bids in march. but cox is now faced with only half his dream come true and another generation of parents possibly starting over. amy has a fifth grader and a kindergartner. >> sometimes the cars are racing to go make the lights and they aren't paying attention to what the pedestrians are doing. it's nice to have the extra bit of safety on the side of the road and not be in the weeds and the mud. >> i understood the money aspect but for a project like this one it was devastating. >> she championed the project. >> when things aren't happening at the state level in terms. -- term of redevelopment, we

♪ time to jump in to something new ♪ ♪ ♪ the best part of wakin' up ♪ is folgers in your cup >> let's take a tour of the bay area. start in santa cruz. the sun is coming up. based on the forecast we are getting from lisa argen, and they are always accurate, there will be a lot of availability on the beach at santa cruz today. it's not going to get a whole lot more crowded than the way you see it right there. let's move up north and take a look at the embarcadero, the bay bridge. again, dawn about to break. streets are wet but they haven't seen anything yet. we have some serious rain on the way and it's not going to be just for a short time.

could you spend a day without the internet? that's the idea behind the national day of unplugging. we are already in it. it started last night and goes until tonight. you are cordially invited to disconnect from the virtual world. no facebook, no twitter, no texting. abstaining in a sort of high-tech detox. this is the third year of the event, organized originally by the jewish community center. of course, television is okay. have you ever dropped your i-phone? ever thought about what would happen to it if you did? a warranty company has been dropping smartphones and i-pads just to see what would happen. here's michael finney with the results. >> this is going to be painful to watch. an i-phone being dropped and dropped and dropped again. it is all part of a test set up by extended warranty company squaretrade. [dropping sounds] >> you can drop this i-phone ten times and have it not shatter.

so i think they can be quite robust and they are getting getting more robust, but you can also drop it and it breaks in a single drop. >> this is often what happens, the front or back comes apart. this is the ceo of squaretrade warranty. an after-market warranty. he said your first line of defense should be a case. >> the simplest way to protect your phone is to get a case w what you saw on this particular drop is an edge phone would have stopped, would have been prevented with a simple edge of rubber. a simple $10.00, five dollars, $20 case will go a long way to protect your device. >> he said the cheap spungy ones that protect the edge work better than some of the more expensive hard cases. this samsung does well in the drop test. the plastic case takes a shock better than glass. now i-pads are not easy to protect. >> i-pads are incredibly delicate.
