a gambling debt may have led the murders of five family members in san francisco. police are set to relose -- release new information. >> crime investigators have been inside the home police said it could take days to determine how the victims died and the killer was among them. right now we're getting answers. tomas row roman is live at the house of justice.

>> reporter: we're waiting for the news conference to start. the latest developments are going to be revealed regarding the five deaths saturday morning. now, we understand from police sources that two people, two vietnamese chinese people were arrested last night in connection -- rather -- detained, not arrested, in connection with the final homicides. we're told there were gang members and now we're going to be hearing some specifics. the press conference just started so let's go to the news conference right now at the hall of justice. >> president of the police commission, lieutenant, homicide detail, captain john murphy of investigations. we have made an arrest in the howth street homicide investigation. the investigation continues. it is ongoing. i want to continue to reassure

the public this incident was specific to 16 howth street. on behalf of mayor ed lee and the san francisco police department, i want to thank everyone who happened in this investigation. from the beginning on friday morning we have gotten everything we asked for from anyone. the fire department's first responders and medical examiners on scene and assisted in the initial investigation were absolutely terrific. those members of the department of public health and the sfpd's critical response team that reached out to the neighborhood to see what could be done for them coping with this tragedy, provided valuable assistance, and mendoza who was serving as our liaison to the high school. their students and parents. we thank you. and to the members of the sfpd. simply unbelievable. some who worked around the clock to make the case would include

but are not limited to the homicide tee tail, crime scene investigations, ingleside station investigators, crime investigations unit and robbery detail, the violence response team, and our tactical teams. this was a complex crime scene. on friday morning in responding to the scene we found identify deceased persons, apparently from blunt trauma. and we really didn't know what we had. we had four separate homicide scenes within the residence. we immediately issue in it ode task force style response that has been effective, calling officers from all sections of the police department to contribute what they might to this investigation. over 40 investigators have been involved in this case since friday. homicide investigators and csi technicians responded immediately to the scene for processing. they were supported in the hours

to come by the crime investigations unit to investigate any possibility this was a home invasion robbery. the task force was there to investigate any gang-related angles. special victim units to investigate possible domestic or mental health issues. the response teams followed up on leads, and without them this investigation would not have been able to continue 24/7 around the clock as the homicide investigators could have got little rest. >> you're listening to the san francisco police chief at the hall of justice. this is a news conference talking about the killing of five people friday morning in the home near city college. he said one person has been arrested. that happened this morning. and he wants to reassure the public that the crime was specific to 16 howth street, where this happened. he thinks first responders and said it was a complicated scene. four separate crime scenes, but

everybody did a great job investigating this, and one person has been arrested. we'll have more in later editions of abc-7 news. some friends of the family who set up a memorial at the home, have identified the victims. they include the opener of -- owner of the home, her mother, father, younger brother, and his wife. >> alan: a man told police he shot an intruder this morning. it happened at 4:00 a.m. in the 600 block of crane of newsom police say the man who pulled the trigger lives in brentwood and was staying at the house for a family gathering. he called 9-1-1 saying someone was trying to break into the home. the suspect is a 24-year-old man from san mateo who is recovering in the hospital. no charges have been filed. >> ama: a growing outrange of a florida team by a neighborhood

howth street on friday. what's the latest? >> reporter: the chief just wrapped up the news conference. he said his 40 investigators have been working diligently since friday morning, have arrested one suspect. they arrested the individual on five counts of hts hts. police -- counts of homicide. the arrest was made in connection with five people found murdered on friday morning in a house on howth street. the body we learn that one of the victims was associated with a chinatown gang at least ten years ago but police sources could not tell us whether that association continued. police assured this is not a random act and the people in the house were specifically targeted and they tell thus was a relationship between the suspect they arrested and members of the family who were killed. now, again, they've given a
