>> disturbing new development tonight in the search for morgan hill teenager sierra la mar. >> volunteer searchers find 2 items not far from where she disappeared. good evening everyone. >> what they found if connecte connected, if connected to the sierra case is troubling sign. nearly 2 weeks since the 15-year-old vanished. late today searchers found items just mile or so from her home

and the bus stop where sierra was headed the day she disappeared. lisa leif in san jose where investigators met this evening about her disappearance. lisa? >>reporter: that is very true. deputy and investigators got a full briefing on today's developments her at the sheriff's department. officials are not ruling out the possibility that the items found may connected to sierra's case. this is video from sky 7m avenue in morgan hill. to the side of the road near the parked cars a volunteer searc searcher found an empty box labeled stainless steel happened cuffs and about 5 feet away, 2 used condoms. >> we don't know if these items are going to be related to the la mar case or fought but we are going to have these items submitted to the crime lab for further testing. >>reporter: this location is just a mile and half from sierra la mar's home. those who live nearby are surprised by the discovery.

>> over the last decade california police department have been getting millions of dollars worth of surplus military equipment. that's according to our media partner california watch, non-partisan project center for investigative reporting. they have been pouring through data to determine where much of the extra equipment has gone. >> u.s. military requires a lot of equipment obviously to conduct operation over seas. but when military operations in iraq wound did you know last year, local police departments were among the biggest beneficiary of the troop draw down. concord police got the 300,000 dollar armored personnel carrier for free. >> we are going to be using that inform our s.w.a.t. team. >>reporter: in the early 90's congress passed legislation that allowed excess military equipment to be transferred to local police departments when it noise longer needed. since
