breaking news this morning. thank you for joining us i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. it is in san francisco the place police are investigating the discovery of a body on main street under the bay bridge. katie marzullo is live at the scene gathering information what do we know? >> reporter: this story went from a deceased body to an official homicide investigation within the past half hour. the scene is half a down on main between harrison son -- and bryant adult man is dead. a pg&e crew was working in the area. i just hung up with a representative from pg&e he says they have heard there was an accident out here but cannot confirm whether it has anything to do with their crew or not. he's going to have someone else call me. i'll keep you updated. in the meantime i talked with

a man who works security for a building nearby. he saw the body and was very surprised this happened in this area. >> spooked, like i said it never happened over here this is the first time something like this happened in area. >> reporter: he described as being like the twilight zone. police have not revealed anything as far as the cause of death whether or not they know of suspects or any suspects are on the loose. they are looking for your help. they say anyone who has information about in crime can text them. tips 411. include sfpd in the subject line and hopefully that will help lead investigators to what they need to know out here. we've watched other vehicles arrive, homicide investigators have a long morning ahead. katie marzullo, abc7 news. searchers will be looking

again this morning for clues in the disappearance of a missing morgan hill teen. troubling new clues a volunteer found will be sent for testing today. terry mcsweeney is live with the latest. >> reporter: they can't call it evidence yet, it is a big if. if what they found yesterday has anything to do with the disappearance of sierra lamar this could be the big break in the case. if not searchers go back about their business three hours from now. take a look at the point where they found a box that says, stainless steel, handcuffs on the side of it, nearby used condoms, found about a mile from sierra lamar's home in the bus stop where she is believed to have been heading when she disappeared march 16th. a searcher located the box and condoms west end of palm avenue. here's what investigators are saying about it. >> we are collecting it as

possible evidence. we don't know if these items will be related to the lamar case or not. >> reporter: this comes nearly two weeks after sierra's disappearance, her cell phone and bag with her clothing inside have been found. investigators are following leads. they've received hundreds and hundreds of calls if the public. anything that might come to -- the search will continue and it is going to be based from here on tilton avenue, they are looking for volunteers to come out. the search got a boost yesterday a donation of $12,000 to the effort. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. 5:04. new this morning, berkeley police have one man in custody in connection with the city's third homicide of the year.

police were called to the 2800 block of sacramento street where people reported gunshots at 7:30 last night they arrived to find a man in his 20s suffering from multiple gunshot wounds he was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. two men left a liquor store and were confronted by another group of men. students at an antioch high will be on alert as police continue to investigate a reported sexual assault. they say it took place yesterday afternoon at deer valley high. authorities say attack happened in one of the school's restrooms before 3 p.m.. mountain view police searching for a man who lunged at a little girl at school. a 9-year-old tells police 8:45 yesterday morning a man suddenly charged at her, but she got away. officers searched the area but couldn't find the man. they don't believe this was a kidnapping attempt. the man was heavy set in his

50s, grey hair and wearing navy blue polo shirt and grey jeans. a man wanted for one of two stabbings this week at the occupy san francisco camp is under arrest. a witness spotted the suspect yesterday walking by justin herman plaza. the witness called police and made a citizens arrest. friends the man stabbed remains in critical. nobody has been arrested in another stabbing that happened monday night. santorum continuing his campaign in wisconsin today after spending a day in the bay area. his motorcade arrived in alamo last few to pick up much-needed cash at an event hosted by mark and becky pine. earlier he made appearance at the jelly belly factory in fairfield no word on how much cash he collected in his visit there. vowing to stay in the race despite trailing in money and gates.

conduct operations overseas. when military operations in iraq wound down last year, local police departments were among the biggest beneficiaries of the draw down. concord police got this $300,000 armored personnel carrier, free. >> we are going to be using that for our s.w.a.t. team. >> reporter: in the early 90s congress passed legislation that allowed excess military equipment to be transfered to local police departments when it is no longer needed. since 1997 concord police received more than $526,000 in military surplus. >> one of the reasons is because of the budget crisis we've had and the economy it allows us to get goods and materials that we normally wouldn't be able to get for free. >> 2011 was a record-breaking year in terms of state police agencies participating in the program. >> reporter: reporter andrew becker examined the federal database to determine where the equipment ended up. he found more than 17,000

public agencies around the country have received an estimated 2.8 billion dollars in military surplus, since this program was created. california received 26.2 million of that last year. the bay area nearly 11 million. >> some of the equipment over the years from helicopters to m-16 rifles, let over toothbrushes, bath mats, camping gear. you name it. >> one person's trash is another's treasure. >> reporter: many law enforcement agencies have been accessing the surplus list for years. the alameda county sheriff received this 85 foot patrol craft from the coast guard in 2005 they use it to patrol oakland and the bay worth 4.4 million dollars. they paid just one dollar for it. >> when you can get a ship like in for a dollar, it is a no-brainer. >> reporter: the program is run online. >> what we do is, we look at the catalogues of the items

good friday morning. 5:30 a.m.. i'm eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze. information in an early morning homicide investigation in san francisco police on the scene now. katie marzullo is live on main street near harrison. what find out about this victim? >> reporter: we heard from pg&e in the last half hour that the person who was killed on main street is not an employee of pg&e. we understand a crew was

working near the scene there was speculation as to that. that is not the case, good news for pg&e. there is an active homicide investigation detectives have been interviewing a man leaning up against a car there, maybe a witness or something. for a lot of information. at this point all we know is that adult man was found in the middle of main street, dead this is between bryant and harrison. we don't have any information on the cause of death. earlier this morning i talked with a witness who was inside a nearby building, he says as far as the cause of death, he didn't hear anything. >> i heard the ambulance outside. when i came outside, i seen the dead body the cops were already here. i couldn't get a good look they told me to go back inside. >> reporter: you didn't hear a gunshot or anything? >> i didn't hear nothing, everything was quiet. >> reporter: police actively

looking as they've been for several days. they found a box labeled stainless steel handcuffs. they also found used condoms. take a look at area where this was found. the discovery point one mile from sierra lamar's home and the bus stop where she is believed to have been heading when she disappear march 16th. a searcher with the klaas kids foundation located the box and condoms west end of palm avenue. a man who lives at the west end had this comment. >> it is not a lover's lane or party alley or nothing like that. once in a while you see a car down there, nothing like that >> reporter: today marks two weeks exactly, since sierra's disappearance. her cell phone and bag have been found, not far from her home. investigators say they have received close to 400 leads

via phone and e-mail from people who think they might have seen something that might tie into this case. they say they have leads they are following up on. the search by the klaas kids foundation resumes this morning 8 a.m. if if you are interested in participating. they would have to have you down here. you are going to get a briefing and then heading out into wilderness areas. if you are coming make sure you are 18, have id and dress appropriately. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. police in antioch continue to develop new information about a reported sexual assault at deer valley high. the alleged attack took place yesterday afternoon at the campus. authorities say the attack happened in one of the restrooms before 3 p.m.. a chemical reaction caused a 55 gallon drum to pop its lid and release gases at an oil recycling plant last

night. crews responded at the evergreen oil company on smith avenue around 11 p.m.. they found one drum containing some sort of paint product releasing gas. six other barrels were warmer than usual, separated and allowed to cool down. no shelter in place order was given. a court date has been set in ross mirkarimi's challenge of mayor lee's suspension of him. it will be heard april 18th. mayor lee suspended the sheriff without pay last week for official misconduct after mirkarimi pleaded guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment. mirkarimi's attorney asked a judge this week to immediately reinstate mirkarimi. he says public officials can't be removed from office for official misconduct unless their crimes occurred while in office. mirkarimi was sworn in one week after the new year's eve domestic violence incident involving his wife. how would you spend half a billion dollars? think about that, somebody could become mega rich tonight.

our cameras were there when a group of students made a surprising discovery while cleaning up. sixth graders from st. paul's episcopal school uncovered a bag filled with valuables picking up trash around lake merritt, it includes 100 pieces of silver and gold, ridges, bracelets, watches, candle holders, even a silver spoon. >> there's several dozen heavy silver rings with opal and maybe other gems on it. a lot of old gold watches the type that used to be given away when people would retire. looked like commemorative claims, one of the things to be from wimbledon. >> kids marveled for a while before they turned it over to police. if no one claims the numbers within 90 days all that treasure goes back to the kids who found it. now the students as you might imagine are more excited about next week's cleanup project. maybe that's how you do it,
