are following all of that this monday morning. thanks for joining you -- joining us i'm eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze. firefighters on the scene of a house fire in san mateo residents escaped. sue thompson is live in the 300 block of barneson avenue. >> reporter: good morning. fire crews from san mateo very busy this morning on this two alarm house fire in west san mateo. you can see for yourself, firefighters saying at least for the most part the danger over, crews now focused on trying to determine how and why this fire started to begin

with the call came in around 4:00 this morning to san mateo when fire crews arrived they found orange flames shooting out of back of a home at 314 barneson avenue. the family that lived inside a family of five, did escape they only had time to run outside and get out just in time. a neighbor next door tells me this happened so fast, she ran into the street with only her pajamas on trying to escape. her garage was damaged in this tire u.s. m fire chief says this blaze did -- san mateo fire chief says this blaze did cause a challenge with the hopes and buildings so close together. >> a second alarm involved a number of structures, two garages, one house and some lean to structures all crews still on scene making sure that the fire is extinguished. assisting the families and investigating. we will be here a couple more hours. >> reporter: they are still definitely very busy. they probably will be

throughout the morning like the fire chief mentioned. the family of five we understand is safe. they did escape and they are okay. it seems they are trying to figure out where this fire may have started. fire crews have -- had a ladder to the top of that house focused around the roof area as well as the attic that may prove to be a focus of their investigation as this morning goes on. the latest here two alarm house fire in west san mateo, danger over and the family of five did escape safely. we ever live in san mateo, sue thompson, abc7 news. developing news out of alameda. coast guard cutter is expected to arrive in san francisco bay in afternoon carrying a pair of seriously injured sailors they were among several hurt when a huge wave -- hit their

sailboat during an around the world racism sandusky -- cause cause with the latest on this story. >> reporter: at last check with a spokeswoman for the racing team still 200 nautical miles out they are expected to arrive this that will depend on how fast they are going. we have new video this is the actual rescue. if you don't have sea legs you might want to get them if you watch this. this was yesterday, the coast guard cutter arrived to find the 70 foot yacht 400 miles off the coast when they attempted this rescue. you see the smaller boat along side the yacht. they had to get two sailors off of that on doubter. one with broken ribs and punctured lung the other with a pelvic strain. water is choppy, the first rescue attempt was going to be by helicopter they had to call

that off because the weather was too bad. that's what he's amateur sailors with a professional captain head out to do, they know the dangers are there. >> we knew what we were taking on the largest ocean in the world. there was a healthy, sort of scariness i suppose, if you like. >> reporter: the yacht and the others are participating in an around the world yacht race call the clipper 11-12 on the leg from china to the bay area due to arrive at jack london square the first yacht did friday they are all going to stay there until about april 14th. the remaining 11 crew, two injured when the wave hit the yacht saturday those are still bringing that yacht in they are expected to rife around the same time as the coast guard cutter which is this afternoon. -- those injured sailors will be taken to a hospital in

san francisco. katie marzullo, abc7 news. 6:05. police are trying to identify the vandals who damaged property during an occupy oakland march saturday night. officers going through video trying to identify the people who smashed windows and spray painted graffiti. they targeted businesses in oakland's city center next to frank ogawa plaza. they caused thousands in damage. police scaled back the number of officers present during the protest because recent anti-police marches have been peaceful. no sign of missing 15-year-old sierra lamar after thousands scoured her morgan hill neighborhood this weekend. they are urging social media users to change their profile pick tours a photo of the teen for -- pictures to a photo of the teen for 24 hours.

6:14. michigan firefighters are talking about how they saved one of their own off a collapsing roof. last week a chemical fire

burning out of control in downtown detroit, to slow it down firefighters had to chop a hole through the roof. that roof gave way entirely. one firefighter was about to fall through, when his buddies pulled him to safety. >> i didn't know how bad it was. we all went -- came off the roof and went back to work. >> as crazy as it was at the time both these guys kept level heads our lieutenant was giving instructions, calm and collective, telling us what to do. >> until he saw the video the firefighter mark ferrell didn't know his pal's quick thinking saved his life. a new los angeles poll shows most californians distrust tech companies in dealing with their information. [ unintelligible ] the latest survey of gas prices finds they are edging down in california. the nationwide average is $3.92 a gallon. here in california prices are down about a penny to $4.31. bay area prices didn't a penny, average in san francisco $4.38. oakland, $4.29. san francisco is among the top 10 greenest cities in the nation according to a new survey. travel and leisure magazine ranked san francisco as 9th for green space, san diego number 8. portland, oregon number 1. the magazine looked at any less, pedestrian friendliness and public parks. portland was cited for waterways, parks and walkways.

6:30 trading getting underway for the week. stock future slipping after latest report out of china suggests its economy may be slowing. we'll hear more ahead in a live report from the new york stock exchange coming up in 15 minutes. good morning thanks for starting your week i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. breaking news out of san mateo. firefighters are still working on a house fire. sue thompson has been on the scene on barneson avenue all morning. what is the latest on the family who lives there? >> reporter: i can tell you from firefighters this home is

a complete loss. the good news here is firefighters say that family of five that had been inside they were able to make it out alive. they were raising to get -- they were racing to get out. -- the fire department is in what they call overhaul mode. [ inaudible ] the fire started on 314 barneson avenue in west san mateo before 4:00 this morning. fires arrived to find the home fully engulfed in flames shooting out of the back of the home. the family of five inside raced out and made it out alive. this home is a loss as well as other structures and a garage in the back of that home i am they all suffered -- had damage fire chief says the challenge in battling this fire this morning was it was based on an intersection and

they were trying to work to keep the flames from spreading to homes that were a few feet way a next door neighbor ran out with only her pajamas on to escape the flames. >> so scary. it just makes you appreciate life and what you have. every so often flames shoot up and i'm going please, please be careful, please make sure the houses are okay. luckily it is contained to the one house, thank god. >> reporter: becky allen says the fire happened so fast, unbelievable. other neighbors surrounding that home on barneson were also evacuated. the investigation gil win at daylight when they will try -- will begin at daylight when they will try to tell you how and why. they are focused in the attic portion of this home on

barneson. we should know a little more as the morning continues. sue thompson, abc7 news. in pacifica, fire investigators will return to the scene of a deadly house fire that claimed the lives of a child and his great-grandfather. 13 were in the house when the fire started, 11 were able to get out, some from a second floor window. a middle school aged boy and his great-grandfather were not able to escape. >> some who were able to evacuate did report there were possibly two people still inside. >> the cause of this fire yesterday morning has not been determined. neighbors say the great-grandfather had only moved to the bay area from mexico three months ago >> rescue of several injured sailors continues this morning. they are expected to arrive in san francisco bay later today. they were competing in an around the world race when a large wave over took their yacht.

>> reporter: keep in mind these are amateurs they pay to race with a professional captain. the ocean doesn't care who you are, that's what this crew had to learn the hard way. they were onboard a yacht when they were hit by that wave saturday. it is a 70 foot yacht they were 400 miles off the coast. two sailors injured badly one with broken ribs and punctured lung the other with a pelvis strain the weather was an too bad for a helicopter to airlift them off of their yacht, a coast guard chopper was sent yesterday that's the video you are seeing here. the injured on that chopper are headed here to coast guard island expected to arrive around 3:00 this afternoon. it is a dangerous sport. according to those who participate in it, that's the way they look it. >> you can't take all the risk out of what this sport is

about. there is inherent risk in sailing yachts particularly in racing yachts. if we could remove all the risk from it, nobody would want to do it. i think's part of the allure. >> reporter: -- i think that's part of the allure. >> reporter: the yacht lost steering the remaining crew using the back-up system to meet up with the rest of the fleet. when the cutter arrives the two injured sailors will be taken to a hospital. they are participating in a year long around the world race. this was the leg from china to the bay area. katie marzullo kauz, abc7 news. 6:35. the cost of california's planned bullet train system is on the way didn't.

the plan will be 30 billions cheaper to build. --$?- 30 billion dollars cheaper to build. the authority's decision to share tracks in the bay area and los angeles is bringing the price down. the wife of the jetblue pilot whose inflight break down caused emergency land something speaking out. captain clayton osbon's wife says she thinks her husband wasn't intentionally violent towards anyone. she thanked the crew and passengers for their handling of the situation. osbon was locked out of the cockpit by his co-pilot and had to be restrained. the plane made an emergency landing in texas. we'll get an idea of how much snow the recent storms have deposited in the sierra. engineers will measure the snow pack. this will be the fourth time the department of water resources will con a manual survey even though winter and -- will conduct a manual

call came in. that is when crews arrived to find the home at 314 barneson avenue, completely engulfed in flames. a family of five that was living inside raced outside to safety, just this time. nearby neighbors say they also were evacuated that is because firefighters say they had a challenge here. that is, they had to work very hard to try and keep flames from igniting homes that were just a few feet away. the home is a complete loss as well as the next door neighbor's garage and some buildings located as the back of the home. fires say while they are clearing the scene this morning, their goal now that it is daylight is they are going to try and work to investigate and figure out why and how this fire started. this was a fast-moving fire that at least for now there has been focus on the attic. as one neighbor tells me, a lot of people very scared this morning. they are thankful no one was hurt. live in west san mateo, sue

thompson, abc7 news. now with more news this morning we turn to katie marzullo at coast guard island in alameda. >> reporter: good morning. there are injured sailors from onboard the yacht headed to coast guard onboard a coast guard cutter. at last check they were 200 nautical miles out they are expected around 3:00 this afternoon. their yacht was hit by a giant wave saturday four sailors injured, two badly with a pudge ed , broken ribs and strained pelvis. helicopter rescue was a -- no-go because of the choppy conditions a cutter had to pick them up yesterday. when they get here this afternoon, they will be taken to a . the rest of the -- rest of the crew will continue on race they lost steering wave hit but they are using a back-up system to steer it. they will be going to jack london square and do the
