the chief to speak in just minutes. let's begin with abc 7. we may have to interrupt you for the news conference. >> sure, understood. the suspect was gone when police arrived, starting a huge search for the gunman. police were concerned because he was still out there and could hurt others. after 10:30, oakland pd moved up and down edge water drive looking for the shooter. the s.w.a.t. team went inside of the university, seven people found dead. >> we had information that there was one shooter, we don't want to rule out if there are additional associated person buzz now, we -- information is one shooter. >> students from another room heard shots and ran. lucas garcia teaches english there. >> there is half a dozen gun sho.s we heard someone say he

has a gun. >> we're going to interrupt now. we're going to try to get back to her but we're going to go live now to oakland and a news conference going on just beginning about what happened today. >> there the oakland police chief will be followed by mayor jean kwan and ann taylor from congress woman barbara lee's office, we'd like to stay focused on the incident today. the chief will be available for any individual interviews. this is a sensitive situation and unfortunate tragedy that happened in our city today. so if we can stay on topic with the answers that occurred today we'd appreciate it. thank you very much.

>> good evening, today's unprecedented tragedy was shocking and senseless. our hearts and prayers go out to victims and families and their friends. the oakland police department received a 911 call regarding a woman on the ground, bleeding. patrol units dispatched at 10:34 a.m. additional calls were received to oakland police department and california patrol. first oakland patrol officer arrived at 10:36 a.m. and located a victim suffering from an apparent life threatening gunshot wound. additional officers including officers from local law enforcement agsz responded and established a prermter around the location at 7850 edge water drive.

the suspect initially believed to be still on the scene or inside. and phone shall victims remained inside of the building either trapped by a locked door officers unable to open or unable to evacuate due to injuries. police officer joined by to search for render aid and possibly injured person as well as search for nay decisional suspects on the scene. approximately 35 persons are believed to have in or neert building when this occurred. officers told us two were gravely wounded. a total of 10 victims and five pronounced at the scene. two victims later died after being transported to a local hospital.

all victims, all victims are reported to be adults. as officers firefighters and paramedics rendered aid and an preliminary investigation led to activity of the suspect. a 43-year-old goh is his last name. our belief that he had fled the area likely before the first officer arrived. within an hour and a half investigators were in possession of the suspect's photo and enroute to his home as well as a residence of a relative. the suspect, believed to be an oakland resident surrendered through officers in their city. and is current fully custody in the oakland police department. i want to thank the men and women who assisted for their response and actions.

dispatchers, officers and firefighters and all first responders did an incredible great job and bring the situation to a peaceful ending. thank you to the oakland unified school district, police, alameda county sheriff, and police departments and bay air rapid transit police department. we requested asy stance with supplementing our officers in this scene. their agencies provided 19 officers to assist with this incident. again, i want to offer my deepest condolences to victims and families and no words can describe the pain caused by this incident. additional information becomes available, we'll share it. pending notification of the families and to ensure this

two, later died at the hospital. the gunman is a 43-year-old juan goh. >> and the gunman may have been in the classroom at one point, stood up and then, began shooting. many, many questions yet to be answered. and we want to turn to vic lee. what have we learned about him? >> you heard the mayor and chief talk about goh. and we're learning details of what he did after the shooting. this is a south shore center parking lot. he parked here, then was arrested over there in front of safeway. >> this looked like they stomped him out of the door to see if he had anything in his pockets he had stolen. there is no fight.

just wearing a beanie. >> and police arrested goh at about 11:30 in front of safeway in the south shore center here as i said, waits security guard called police after he spoke to the suspect. a source tells us that goh apparently spoke to a clerk and telling him something about shootings. she got concerned and called a security guard. the guard went over to him and goh told him apparently he had shot a lot of people. police responded and talked to him here and took him into custody. later on the oakland police officer and investigators went to he alameda police department and took custody of goh. now, the car that i was driving is not registered to him, but to a 38-year-old man

who lives in a residential hotel. we spoke to the manager of the hotel. he says tenants still have not returned to his room. so this question is how who is the owner of the car? how did goh get it? >> and in addition to seven dead, three people are recovering from wounds tonight. the chief just told us that those wounds are not life threatening and we know one woman has been released from the hospital. the mayor called this a terrible tranl di, offering counseling to students. governor brown called it shocking and sad and offered condolences to victims and families and friends. and there is a story of one of the vur vifor autos we talked

to her and her family a short time ago and there are chilling details. the 19-year-old was brought to highland after being shot not arm. her brother-in-law says the teenager told the family that the shooter ordered his former classmates to line up against the wall and when students began to run he pulled out a gun and started shooting. >> and how are you doing? >> i'm doing okay. >> can you tell us anything about what happened today? >> just some guy attacking us. >> did you know him? >> yes. he was a former student. >> what happened? he just stood up in class? >> yes. just stood up in class and tried to shoot us. >> we heard you tried to help a friend? >> yes. i helped my friend. >> what did you do? >> i picked her up from the ground. i got shot in the arm.

university. >> we're live in front of the oakland police department. the press conference just wrapped up featuring police chief and mayor. we'll show you video from a scene that sparked this press conference that was a shooting that took place after 10:30 in the morning at oikos university a christian school indicatoring predominantly to the korean community. and that university rock today when a man who police identify as a 43-year-old korean national walked into a classroom asking people apparently to line up and started shooting. police say of the 35 people, 10 people were wounded in that shooting and there were five who die add the scene. two others later died at the hospital. police told he is us they spent time going into the building and trying to search for survivors.
