school and was later arrested at a shopping center 3 miles away. >> he actually commandeered a victim's car and drove to it alameda. that's when he surrendered. >>reporter: police don't know the motive for the shooting but mayor kwan says it has shaken the korean community to the core. >> i just hope that we will put our arments around this group of people and these families and do our best to bring peace back to the city. >>reporter: and tonight as korean community grieves over the death of those 7 victims, the klooen methodist church has announced they are planning a memorial service that begins tomorrow evening at 6:00 o'clock. in oakland, jonathan plume abc 7 news. >> thanks jonathan. we are learning much more about the suspected shooter tonight. his background in connection to the university and how he ended up in police custody. vick lee is live at the university in vick vick? >>reporter: we are learning a lot about juan go tonight. we

learn that he was deeply in debt and that avenues troubled person with tens of thousands of dollars in lien including one from the irs. now most of his money problems came when he lived in virginia prior to moving here.in fact he was evicted from his apartment in the hays, virginia owing 1300 dollars in back rent in the spring. we also learn that there was something that must have troubled him deeply. his brother with whom he was close staff sergeant in the army died in a car accident while he was training with special forces last year. now go had a hunting license so he was probably also very familiar with firearms. he was finally captured today about 3 miles from here in the south shore center in alameda. juan go was in the back seat of the alameda police car hiding his face from our camera with jacket covering his head. they had arrested him at about 11:30 in front of

safeway in the south shore center parking lot. it was security guard who called police after he spoke to the suspect. source also tells us that go called his father telling him everything that had happened. after he parked the cary apparently spoke to the at least one safeway clerk who said he rambled about the shooting. he called the security guard who was told by go he shot a lot of people. security guard then called alameda police. they responded spoke to the man and took him into custody. this is video from sky 7 of the police car carrying the suspect back to the station. sources they also recovered the gun in the car. safeway shopper lisa saw it all. >> it looked like they stopped him at the door to see if he had anything in his pocket that he had stolen. there was no fight. he was just wearing a beanie. >> we learned this go stayed with 72-year-old father part of the week here at the very apartment complex in oakland. police escorted 72-year-old man

away this afternoon and sealed the unit. >> the car that go drove is not registered to him. the police say he commandeer that car from the owner who apparently is one of the victims. one footnote. you can see the police cars behind me. the crime scene is still very active. here. in fact chief jordan says the university will be closed indefinitely. vick lee, 7 new news. >> all right vick thank you. >> oakland police release a time line late today detailing the police response to the shootings. it began at 10:33 with call to 911. caller tells the dispatcher that a woman was on the ground bleeding in the university. at 10:34 oakland police patrol units were dispatched to the scene. first officers arrived at 10:36. 3 minutes after the first call came in. hour and a half later police identify the suspect and he surrendered to police in alameda. >> 3 people survive the shooting. they were all treated at high land hospital

in oakland. 7 news spoke with one of them as she was discharged late this afternoon. more on that part of the story tonight from lillian kim who is live at the hospital for us. lillian? >> carolyn 19-year-old miss car is a nursing student from santa clara. she was treated and released and her family rate here waiting for her. family of miss car waited apparently outside high land hospital in oakland. her brother paul described how he got a call from her moments after she was shot. >> i have been shot she saichltd dude in my class went crazy so you can just please come get me. do something. look for the police i'm on my way. i drove my car here as fast as i could. >>reporter: she was finally released late this afternoon. she's one of 3 surviving shooting victims. gunshot wound was to her right arm. she spoke to our carolyn tyler. how are you doing. >> doing okay. >>reporter: can you tell us anything about what happened today? >> just some guy attacking us.

>>reporter: did you know him? >> yes he's a former student. >>reporter: so what happened? he just stood up in class. >> ya. just stood up in class and decide to shoot us. >>reporter: we heard that you tried to help a friend. >> i helped my friend. >>reporter: what did you do. >> i picked her up from the ground. she fell on the ground. i got shot in the arm. >>reporter: could you show us, did you get stitches. >> yes i got stitches. >>reporter: what was that like in there? what was the atmosphere. >> not the best. but oh, well. whatever happened we can make the best out of it. >>reporter: you had the presence of mind to call your brother. >> yes. i was able to get hel help. >>reporter: as for the 2 other survivors they remain at high land hospital. we have been told one is a man with an injury to his back. the other is a woman with an injury to her shoulder. live in oakland, lillian kim abc 7 news. >> thank you lillian. we are also learning more tonight

about one of the victims who died today in the shooting at the university. this car belonged to sharon boot the oakland tribune report she was murdered when somewhating suspect juan go car jacked him at the college. he lived in residential hotel in san francisco north beach. his landlord told abc 7 that he called to check on the nursing student when news of the shooting broke. but got no answer. boot immigrated from india several years ago. he worked andrea yates as janitor at san francisco international airport and attended classes during the day. >> well in the rush to get out of the gunman's fire one woman quick thinking saved lives. nick smith live with that part of the story tonight. nick she was very smart and very absolu. >> absolutely, dan. that one woman is a quick thinking student whose class was directly next door. today some are calling her a herein because of what she did. she may have stopped others from being wounded or even killed.

this girl witnessed the student student in the nursing class and only in oakland three months. she says she heard a popping sound at first she thought were fireworks then she heard a woman scream. oh, my god. that's when she says she sprang into action. lock the door turned off the lights. she and the classmates lay flat on the floor. >> he start shooting on the door. i think it was 4 times he shot on the door and maybe he thought like nobody was inside because it was dark and he couldn't see anything. then i think he moved on the other room. i can hear the banging the gun banging and then suddenly like the lady she was asking for help. >>reporter: no one was hurt in the classroom and it is possible her actions were a major reason why. the mayor says there were about 35 people in or near the building when gunfire broke out. she says her faith play add large part new york she feels like she

two injured british sailors who were rescued hundreds of miles out in the pacific are now recovering in california. they arrived in the san francisco bay area on a coast guard cutter yesterday. both of them were injured over the weekend when a giant wave hit their yacht during a round the world race. the rest of their team is expected to arrive in oakland today. and to follow-up after the fatal crash of a large recreational vehicle in kansas. we now know that a 17-year-old boy was driving the rig when it crashed sunday in kansas. five people died in that wreck. all were family and friends from minnesota. the teenager would not have been allowed to drive that type of vehicle because of its weight and the number of people on board, but neither of those restrictions applied because of a loophole in minnesota state law. and that jetblue pilot who had a midair meltdown remains in jail without bond after his first federal court appearance. clayton osbon's wife and a number of his fellow jetblue employees were in the amarillo,
