>> reporter: this morning we have new information on the suspect and the victims in yesterday's mass shooting that killed seven and wounded three i'll have it coming up in a live report. a lot more new information about the man accused of the shooting his connection to the school and how he got caught. the big unanswered questions. from killing and chaos, heroes, the quick-thinking of one is being credit with saving the lives of her classmates. good tuesday morning 34:30 a.m. i'm eric thomas, thanks for joining us. -- >> i'm kristen sze, the oikos campus remains shutdown. the oakland police chief has just given us new information on the suspected gunman who killed seven people. terry mcsweeney is live on campus with the latest developments. >> reporter: new information on the suspect and victims. the suspect came to this

campus yesterday, a campus he was no longer enrolled at and opened fire hoping to get a particular administrator who perhaps he blamed for having him kicked out of school. he did not get that administrator. he did shoot 10 students, seven of them are dead. yesterday morning 10:30 out here, the 43-year-old former student, opened fire according to police and a source tells the chronicle he operated fire with a 45 calibre handgun. he shot 10 before heaving the scene. chief jordan of the oakland pd is saying this morning that those victims were from nepal, india and korea. keep in mind this is a tiny93 school maybe 100 students go here, so he shot 10% of the student body and it was pandemonium. >> we heard half a dozen gunshots. and we heard somebody say, he

has a again or somebody has a gun. then i evacuated the classroom. >> several people hiding in locked buildings, locked doors, behind desks, very frightened, very scared. some were injured. we had to rescue them out. we had to force our way into a number of rooms. >> reporter: the suspect realized 11:30 at a supermarket in alameda. he stole a car from one of his victims. cooperating with police in the matter and has reportedly confessed to doing everything. he has told -- called his father when he had a moment of freedom at alameda supermarket and told his father everything hedon. mayor quan is asking -- he had done. mayor quan is asking everyone to come together and show support for the korean community this is a korean christian university. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. we are learning more about the victims who died.

this car belonged to a woman who was murdered when the gunman carjacked him. he a residential hotel in north beach. his landlord told abc7 news he called to check on the nursing student when news broke but got no answer he emigrated from india several years ago. he worked nights as a janitor at san francisco airport. attended classes during the one student's actions may have stopped the gunman from shooting many more. she heard a popping sound that at first she thought was fireworks then heard a woman scream "oh my god" that's when she strange into action locked the door turned off the lights and she and her classmates got down on the floor. >> start shooting on the door, three or four times he shot on the door maybe he thought nobody was inside because it

was dark and he could not see anything. then he moved on to the other room. i can hear the gun banging then suddenly like the lady she was asking for help. >> no one was hurt in that classroom. she says her faith played a large part as to how she responded and why she feels the tragedy cannot stop her from finishing the nursing program. >> the suspect is four day three-year-old former student. vic lee has more on his background and how he ended up in police custody. >> reporter: he was in the backseat of this alameda police car hiding from our camera with a jacket covering his head they arrested him 11:30 in front of safe way this south shore center parking lot. a security guard called police after he spoke to the suspect. a source tells us that go called his father telling him

everything that happened. he spoke to one safeway clerk who said he rambled on about a shooting. she called the security guard who was told by goe he shot a lot of people. the security guard call alameda police, they responded, spoke to the man and took him into custody this is video from sky 7 of the police car carrying the suspect back to the station. they also recovered the gun in the car. safeway shopper saw it call. >> it looked like they stopped him at the door to see if he anything in his pockets that he had stolen there was no fight. he was -- >> reporter: he stayed with his 72-year-old father part of the week at this senior apartment complex in oakland. police escorted the 72-year-old away and sealed the unit. we are learning also that he was deeply in debt he had a troubled financial past with tens of thousands of dollars

in liens, including one from the irs. most of his money problems came when he lived in virginia prior to moving here. he was evicted from his apartment in virginia in the spring of 2008 back rent of $1300. one other thing must have troubled him deeply, his brother was a staff sergeant killed in a car accident while training with special forces. he also had a hunting license which means he was familiar with firearms. chief jordan says, the university behind me will be closed indefinitely wool -- while the investigation goes on. vic lee, abc7 news. today the community will be given a chance to grieve for and remember the victims, a vigil will be held tonight in oakland at 8501 international boulevard. that vigil is set to begin at 6 p.m.. we'll continue to follow this story and bring you any new

a spokeswoman says no arrest warrants linked to the raids have been issued yet. developing news in oakland now. a celebration of sorts at jack london square. a damaged yacht and remaining crew limped into port with an incredible story. the australian yacht was one of several taking part in a race around the world it was hit by several huge waves and damaged 400 miles off the california coast. a crowd greeted the craft and remaining crew. a coast guard cutter met up with the vessel this weekend and picked up two seriously injured crew members. they are being treated at san francisco general. the remaining crew arrived after 4:00 this morning aboard the damaged craft. yesterday a tale of two places. some got sun and warmth others i hear kind of different. >> and several hundred miles off the coast big waves.

lisa argen is monitoring the weather. we have a mixed bag once again. more clouds in the north bay, chance of showers then a chance of showers limps through the rest of the bay area towards the evening. right now, we are cloudy everywhere with 51 in oakland, 47 in mountain view, 46 in redwood city. with the clouds this morning, we are mild. chance of showers throughout the afternoon towards the evening. for once we've got a warm-up in store for the weekend with above normal temperatures. we have that to look forward to. this has a narrow band of moisture. it is going to slide through the bay. once it does tonight, we are still left with the cool and breezy conditions throughout much of the workweek. for this morning cloudy skies, 40s and 50s partly cloudy this afternoon. more clouds in the north bay we'll call it mostly cloudy there. chance of showers from noon to the evening hours coastal hills through the second half of the bay area.
