5 a.m. on this tuesday morning the day after a huge tragedy in the east bay. thank you for joining us i'm eric thomas and i'm kristen sze. new information on the accused gunman and possible motive in the shootings of 10 at an oakland christian university. >> we have live team coverage. katie marzullo is at the hospital where the injured were taken. we'll begin with terry mcsweeney at the still closed oikos university campus. >> reporter: it is going to be closed indefinitely according to the police chief saying the person that did the shooting came out specifically to do what he did. we are also learning the person he specifically wanted to kill, wasn't even on campus yesterday. that's an administrator who may have played a role in kicking him out of this school. take a look at video from yesterday about 10:30 yesterday morning when it all down. police say 43-year-old former

student one goh opened fire he was using a 45 calibre handgun, targeting administrator who may have played a role in having him kicked out several months go from the school. goh shot 10 students this is a student body of less than 100 students, so he shot a fair percentage of the student body. it was bedlam out here as you can tell by the 911 call. >> a lady came outrunning she blood on her arm. >> an active shooting going on. >> can we get another ambulance down here? >> reporter: the suspect fled the scene in a car that he had stolen from one of his victims. he was arrested one hour later at an supermarket in alameda. he called his father, confessed then told a supermarket employ what i he had done. police arrived, arrested him without incident.

dwou mayor is asking residents to please do what they can for the korean community this is a korean christian university and to do what it can for the university students and the family of the victims in general. police still on the scene, very active investigation. i just saw them go in with search dogs. we'll try to find out what they are doing at this stage of the investigation and get back now half an hour. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. two of the shooting victims are still hospitalized in oakland. new details are emerging about one of the victims who was murdered while the suspect tried to make his getaway. katie marzullo is live at the hospital with that part of the story. >> reporter: there are still two victims treated here at highland hospital because of privacy issues the hospital can't release the nature of

their injuries. they are not life-threatening. as for the rest of the victims of the seven dead, six were women, two have been identified and they were in their early 20s. one man, only within man also killed, he was car -- only one man also killed, he was carjacked in the parking lot. he was shot and killed in the parking lot and then the suspect took off in his car. he is a 38-year-old man lives in san francisco and emigrated from a town deep in the himalayan mountains. i -- he was a buddhist, nursing student by day, janitor by night by all accounts, a very smart and kind man. one survivor released from the hospital with stitches in her arm after being shot in the arm. she spoke with our own carolyn tyler yesterday. >> [ inaudible ]

>> we heard you tried help a friend? >> i helped my friend. >> reporter: what did you do? >> i picked her up from the ground. she fell on the ground and i got shot in the arm. >> reporter: this is a small college by all accounts and most of the victims we understand were in the same class. a lot of mourning going on will continue. to that end, we understand a memorial has been manned, tonight at 6 p.m. at the korean methodist church on the 300 block of hudson street in oakland. no doubt there will be a massive turnout and a tearful one. katie marzullo, abc7 news. in the middle of that chaos there were stories of heroic actions. one student's quick thinking may have stopped the gunman from shooting many more. she says she heard a popping sound that at first she thought were fireworks. then she heard a woman scream, "oh my god."

she locked the door and turned off the lights. she and her classmates got down on the floor. >> he start shooting on the door. i think it was three or four times he shot on the door. maybe he thought nobody was inside because it was dark and he could not see anything itch then i think he moved on the other room, -- i can hear the gun banging. suddenly, like the lady she was asking for help. >> no one was hurt in her classroom. she says her faith played a large part as to how she responded and why she feels the tragedy cannot stop her from finishing the nursing program. >> the community will be given a chance to grieve for and remembering the victims vigil tonight oakland allen temple baptist church. set to begin at 6 p.m.. we will continue to follow the story and bring new details as they develop here and on

world race hit by several waves and damaged 400 miles off the northern california coast. a crowd greeted the craft and its crew. coast guard cutter first met up with the vessel over the weekend and picked up two injured crewmembers now being treated. at san francisco general. the remaining crew arrived after 4:00 this morning aboard that seriously damaged craft. this afternoon the marin county board of supervisors will take up the issue of whether to allow george lucas to build a huge facility on a piece of historic farmland. neighbors are not happy with the plans they don't want to see the farmland razed. it will be located next to his skywalker ranch facility. state water managers say last month's storms barely built up the sagging sierra

good morning. oakland unified school district is launching an ambitious plane to -- plan to provide health care to all students by the end of the year using 18 million dollars in funding with alameda county the city of oakland and kaiser permanente to set up nine health centers bringing the total number to 26. administrators say many students live in poverty and that can lead to health problems that affect learning. health centers will provide physicals, mental health counseling, vaccinations and first-aid. san francisco transportation officials holding a city hall hearing this afternoon to consider a resolution that could pave the way to make muni free for the youth. after hearing public comments the board is set to vote on whether to provide free muni to all youngsters to low income youth only or reduce the price on all youth passes. the board is also expected to consider a proposal to end free parking on sundays. a decision is expected on may

kicked out of the school several months ago. he did open fire, killing seven, wounding three, all students. the administrator he was after, wasn't here yesterday. this is what it sounded like when the 911 calls starting coming in. >> a lady came out she had blood on her arm. >> like an active shooting going on. >> can we get another ambulance? >> reporter: that was about 10:30 yesterday morning. police say 43-year-old former student one goh opened fire he did so with a 45 calibre handgun. he shot 10 before leaving. this is a very small school, fewer than 100 students are enrolled here and he shot 10 of them. it was bedlam. the chief was talking about motive this morning on "good morning america." >> we have learned that the suspect was upset with the administration at the school. he was also upset that students were in the past when

he attended the school mistreated him, disrespected him and things of that nature. >> reporter: the suspect arrested in the back of that squad car you see there. the entire incident beginning to end from shooting to capture lasted one hour. the suspect was arrested 11:30 at a supermarket in alameda. he stolen a car that belonged to one of his victims. he is cooperating with police. he at that market called his father before he told the store employees he had shot someone and he confessed everything to his father. police say that he is cooperating. half an hour ago, i noticed a police officer out here with a k-9 in front of the university. i over and asked him what he was doing there? he said it appears to be a k-9 officer was moved in front of the university to keep people out and he was just taking that dog for a walk. hit nothing to do with the investigation. the university is closed

indefinitely, according to police chief howard jordan. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. two of the shooting victims still hospitalized in oakland. we have new information on one of the victims who was murdered while the gunman tried to make his getaway. katie marzullo is live at highland hospital to continue our coverage. >> reporter: we don't know the extent of the injuries of the two people still inside the hospital here. we understand they are not life-threatening. they are among a lucky three. take a look at video from outside the emergency room yesterday. you can see all of the activity most of which is police activity. officers and detectives, coming and going. seven people were killed in the shooting, six women and within man from 21 to 40 they come from india, koreaos6z, tibt and nigeria. the only man killed was a buddhist who emigrated from a town deep in the himalayan

mountains he wasn't to school during the day trying to become a nurse and janitor at night to pay the bills by all accounts a smart and kind man he was shot and killed while being carjacked in the parking loft of the school. the only survivor released from the hospital told carolyn tyler what happened in that classroom. >> reporter: how are you doing? >> okay. >> reporter: can you tell us anything about what happened today? >> just some guy attacking us. >> reporter: did you know him? >> yeah he's a former student. >> reporter: what happened, he just stood up in class? >> yeah, he just stood up in class and decided to shoot us. >> reporter: that brave young women is a u.s. army reservist, which might explain her calm under pressure. she was shot in the arm and left the hospital yesterday with stitches. when all of this was happening, she had the presence of mind to help a friend get out safely, who had fallen on to the floor as the bullets were

right now oakland police chief howard jordan giving us another update on the story we've been following owl morning the oikos university -- shootings. >> two of the officers, including one of our first responders were korean-speaking officers and they were very instrumental in helping us determine what happened. we have been talking to other witnesses here in various languages, not just korean this is a multi-lingual school that caters to many students from foreign countries. in terms of the suspect's cooperation i'm told he's being very cooperative . he has not been particularly remorseful but very cooperative. >> why did he go to safeway? >> we don't know. i think he just wanted to get away from the area. eventually, we are glad he went there and surrendered, because this could have been much more catastrophic than it

towards women. there were a total of 35 five -- 35 people here yesterday, 23 were accounted for. the others left before we arrived. we don't have the actual make-up of whether they are female vs. male. >> why did he stop shooting? did he run out of bullets, got tired? thank goodness. >> we believe that he stopped because people were able to use the phone. he could have heard people calling 911. as you know, our police communication center is right down the street here. the first call we got yesterday morning was at 10:33. within three minutes, our first officer started to arrive. it was a matter of time before officers were going to start arriving at the scene. we don't believe that the suspect was intending on having a confrontation with the police. so he left immediately after he was finished shooting.
