good morning 6:01 on this breezy monday morning -- wednesday morning that was a bad nightmare, thanks for joining us i'm eric thomas. i'm kristen sze let's begin with the deadly shooting in oakland. the former student will make his first court appearance today. >> meantime, dive teams worked into the morning hours searching an estuary looking for the weapon used to kill seven people. we have team coverage. katie marzullo has more on an emotional memorial for the victims. we begin with terry mcsweeney at shoreline park with the latest on the search for the murder weapon. >> reporter: 43-year-old one goh expected in court today this afternoon prosecutors have a mountain of evidence against him. one thing missing is the murder weapon. oakland pd say they've

developed information that leads them to believe it was thrown into this body of water between the oracle arena and oakland airport on monday morning. take a look at the effort to find that 45 calibre handgun. these are divers going in last night into the water, looking for the semi-automatic gun used in monday's rampage that killed seven and wounded three. the suspect goh has confessed but for some reason stopped short of telling investigators where he threw that handgun. police have information that it is in here so they called in the robotic sonar scanner from the san francisco police department. they have boats some from the coast guard, some oakland pd equipped with scanners come in yesterday, they searched all day long. then the divers went in at night. investigators don't think the current going to interfere with the finding of this weapon. >> a weapon being as heavy as it is, probably shouldn't have too much effect especially given it is only a little more

than 24 hours old. the silt depending on how deep it is, can cause problems. >> reporter: again, policej have a confession from goh, he says he went to the school on monday, he wanted to kill students because they teased him for his poor english. he wanted to kill an administrator because she had not helped him get back thousands in tuition money that he lost when he left school in january. police have plenty of evidence, the d.a. has the case now. we are also learning that mr. goh had serious financial problems, owing tens of thousands, some to the irs. police are saying that mr. goh has been helpful, to a point. he's confessed, told them details of the killings, why he did it. won't say where he threw the murder weapon. don't know why he won't. police are going to be looking for it. again, he's been helpful, but not, according to police, remorseful. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news.

nursing professor who taught one goh says he used to brag about violence. goh told him he would go to the park and pick fights when he was bored. -- a brother of one goh offered sympathy to the families. he dodged questions yesterday but off camera said he's ashamed his brother is accused of killing seven people. he said he feels very sorry for the families. one get lived in two virginia cities in the last five years. more on those financial problems terry was talking about. goh was evicted from one virginia apartment complex where he still reportedly owes $1300 in back rent. news of the shooting spree shocked his neighbors in virginia. >> he would come and chat with us, just, you know little chat here and there i never would have thought anything. >> goh left virginia in 2009 where he reportedly worked in construction and moved to oakland to start a new life. this morning we know more

about the victims of the shooting spree. last night hundreds of mourners held a vigil in remembrance of them. katie marzullo is live at the oikos university campus if oakland. >> reporter: -- one thing to hear that seven people have been kill, another to learn their names and still another to see their faces and hear from their family members. that's what we are going to do. we are going to show you pictures of some of the victims that we have gathered. first 21-year-old lydia sim, 23-year-old grace kim, kathleen ping 24, one 30 three and 40-year-old doris, also judith, 53. their families are devastated as you would imagine in one case, one one of the victim was a breadwinner for the family. in another case her husband lives in the philippines and may in the know she has been killed.

the entire community rallied together at a memorial service. some stay more than 300 people showed up, some say -- some say more than 300 people showed up, some say as high as 1,000. grace kim was fun and fun loving by all accounts known for singing on-the-job. >> she was the most vivacious, amazing person you could imagine. she a good future and i was taken from her. it is disgusting and awful, horrible. >> reporter: several of the stories involve victims who were only months from getting their degrees many in nursing something they specifically came to this country for, to better their own lives or those of their families. a lot of people impacted by this tragedy we want to remind you that the city of oakland has set up a crisis hotline if you would like to talk with a professional and get help about what you are going through. we naught number on abc7news.com and click -- we

put that number on abc7news.com click on see it on tv. just to reiterate, be sure to stay with abc7 for continuing coverage. we'll continue to bring the latest developments on air and online. the address is abc7 news.com. other news, this morning pg&e crews are still on the scene of a gas leak in a san jose neighborhood that leak began when a car hit a home last night. officials say after 10 p.m. a car slammed into a home near the intersection -- the impact destroyed a gas meter and sparked the leak and sent the driver to the hospital with serious injuries injuries. residents were evacuated. the streets in the area were closed until after pg&e capped the leak around 12:30 this morning. officials say at least four homes still don't have gas service, while workers make repairs.

good wednesday morning. 6:14. let's take a live look on the embarcadero in san francisco, busy place come after noon time when the giants and the a's wrap up their bay bridge series, wrap up spring training weather looking good we could have showers and certainly breezy and cold this morning. meteorologist mike nicco will talk about that. nbc news apologizing for ending a 911 call made by george zimmermann the florida man who shot and killed 17-year-old trayvon martin. the network says it conducted an investigation of the incident and admitted they made an error. the editing mistake suggested zimmermann volunteered martin'ses missy to dispatchers. nbc cut out a portion where the dispatcher asked for the

teen's race. zimmermann has repeatedly said he shoot shot the teen in self-defense and has never been charged. the issue of gay marriage goes before a federal court today and could be on the fast frank to the u.s. supreme court. an appeals court in boston will hear organizements today over the defense of marriage act which prevents the government from giving benefits to married gay couples. gay marriage is legal in massachusetts a judge has declared it unconstitutional that the defense act interferes with gay marriage. [ unintelligible ] yesterday a surf said he felt something on his foot that was the first bite. the shark let go, came back and bit him again. he fought often shark with his surf board. he needs surgery on his foot but will be okay.

officials are warning people to stay out of the water. >> that's one persistent shark. just about 6:16. looks like it is going to be quiet here. those tractor trailers lived up and thrown by the tornado if you haven't seen that video, incredible. if you have seen it, still incredible to watch a second time. parts of texas are cleaning up now after being hit by 18 twisters yesterday. look at this from dallas, multi-ton tractor trailers up to 30,000 pounds flying through the air. dallas airport was closed most of the day yesterday. hail damaged more than 100 planes. no deaths reported the news media was all over this event showing live pictures from helicopters of the tornadoes ripping through neighborhoods

101 san rafael southbound good. at the bay bridge toll nearing lights on since my last report things are now starting to back up beyond the end of the parking lot not horrible yet slow to the metering lights. south bay 280 still flowing well northbound for headlights 17 out of the santa cruz mountains. you know about the typical delays westbound 4 antioch westbound 580 through the altamont pass. i want to show you the waze traffic app, street level slow downs. basco road is jammed getting on to westbound 580, four miles an hour reported heavy even eight minutes ago. as we look up on basco road heading out of livermore, heavy traffic reported there as well 21 minutes ago near -- we have a traffic spotter still moving at over 40 miles an hour.

another round of legal arguments set today over a new york man's argument claiming part ownership of facebook. it is taking place in federal court in buffalo, new york. he claims he gave facebook founder mark zuckerberg start-up money in 2003 in exchange for half company if it grew. facebook attorneys say the lawsuit is based on a doctored contract and wants the judge to dismiss it. coming up on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the titanic this month. director james cameron is headed back under water. also doing a special for national geographic. he talked to "good morning america" this morning about his admitted titanic obsession. >> when i was making the film, i found that there were so many big gaping holes in the history. even when you have an event as well described with 703 survivors, all saying what

unit to the side standing watch and a few flowers with have been placed at the corner to mash the tragedy that happened here. we have now learned the identities of all seven victims, we have some of their pictures we want to show you 21-year-old lydia sim, grace kim 23, ping was 24, 33-year-old, 38, the man carjacked in the parking lot, 40-year-old doris and judith was 53. the memorial held last night was huge, some estimates say more than 300 attends. others go as high asg it was a multi-faith bilingual ceremony it featured buddhist monks. entire communities in mourning. no one is as devastated as the families. he moved here -- she moved

our coverage, we'll continue to bring you the latest on air and online at abc7news.com. 6:35. other news started as a student fee hike protest in los angeles last night ended with dozens of students being pepper sprayed and at least two sent to the hospital. at last 30 students were hurt after campus police began pepper spraying demonstrators at santa monica college. 100 students showed up to protest a system of fees due to go into effect this summer. two officers were backed up against the wall and began using force to keep students out of the meeting. san bruno school district advisory board has recommended closing the elementary school closest to the 2010 pipeline explosion. the district says because of declining enrollment it wants to shutdown crestmoor. many parents oppose the plan

they say their kids have been through enough. the board is expected to vote in two weeks. oaksterdam university vowing to reopen as early as this morning, did it spite monday's raid. yesterday hundreds marched from san francisco's city hall to the federal building two block as way they denounced the obama administration's fight against medical marijuana dispensaries. several san francisco6 supervisors joined in on the protest. >> we need to make it clear that we don't believe what the federal government is doing is acceptable. second, we need to protect the regulations we have put in place, that are consistent with state law. >> there's also a new push at the state level to further legitimize pot clubs. a bill would legalize marijuana sales and regulate dispensaries like any other business. we are seeing some sunshine, it is certainly breezy and cold out there this morning. >> it is. this is nothing compared to what texas has been going

eligible for experimental treatments. appear end to prescribing antibiotics for most sinus issues saying the tests are unnecessary and costing patients money they shouldn't be spending. americans spent 2.6 trillion on health care in 2010. this morning mitt romney is counting his delegates and looking ahead after sweeping three primaries yesterday. he won wisconsin, maryland and the district of columbia. giving him half the delegates feeded for the nomination in his victory speech last night he spoke as if he were already the party's nominee. >> i don't want to transform america. i want to restore to america the economic values of freedom and opportunity and limited government that made us the powerhouse of the world! >> pennsylvania and half the other people in this country have yet to be heard. >> pennsylvania is santorum's home state. his showdown with romney takes place there april 24th.

santorum finished second in wisconsin and maryland and not on the d.c. ballot. more on breaking news. today is shaping up to be a dark day for thousands of employees of yahoo. >> jane king joins us live from the new york stock exchange with more on the just announced lay-offs at yahoo. we heard rumors this was going to happen today. the company confirming just a few minutes ago. it is eliminating 2,000 jobs, 14% of its workforce. yahoo is reorganizing in an bid to increase profit and re a sales slump. they are having a tough time competing with google and facebook. yahoo has had six mass lay-offs within the past four years under three different ceos this is the biggest. -- let's see how the stock is trading here this morning. trading up a little so far.

for the overall jobs' picture it is getting brighter. today's employment report shows private companies added 209,000 jobs in march, better than what economists were expecting. friday the government will likely show a similar gain if that holds true it would be the fourth straight month we've seen the economy add more than 200,000 jobs. we are paying more attention to the fed minutes released yesterday indicating they may not be so eager to have more stimulus for the economy. we saw markets weak yesterday continuing today. we are also watching the bloomberg index it trading down as well. i'm jane king. 6:48. hundreds of flights in -- at the dallas-ft. worth airport. people rancor forever, spawns

and tornadoes -- ran for cover. spawns and tornado -- some of the trucks weighed 30,000 pounds, incredible. there are no reports of deaths or serious injuries. that's incredible. residents are faced with the task of what little is left. >> it was phenominal. >> it sounded like a train coming hit the house about 20 to 30 seconds. when i came out everything was destroyed. >> two flights to san francisco were among the hundreds that have been cancelled this morning and arriving and departing flight at san jose cancelled. officials say the cancellations were necessary after golf ball sized hail damaged more than 100 planes. i was just reading at st. louis airport they are reopening the terminal destroyed by a tornado last year. >> just now getting it back
