good morning. thanks for joining us i'm kristen sze. >> police are checking the cell phone records of the 17-year-old driver who killed a father and daughter riding bikes over the weekend. prosecutors considering an option that could mean a significantly heavier penalty. amy hollyfield is live at the accident scene on treat boulevard in concord. >> reporter: should the 17-year-old driver be charged as adult? the destruction that he caused is still visible here on treat boulevard, people can see there's so much rubble they've had to put up a fence from where he crashed into this medical building. there are bricks, still all over the sidewalk here. very, very destructive accident. police say the driver was speeding and trying to change lanes when he lost control of his cadillac suv.

he broke a fire hydrant which sent water spraying into the air. he crashed into the three bicyclists, a man and his two young daughters then he slammed into the building. the driver is a 17-year-old high school student. we have chosen not to release his namebysml because a juvenil. the district attorney will look into whether he was on prosecutors will decide whether to charge him as an adult. >> i don't make assumptions. at the same time someone has to be held accountable for something like this. 17 or not, sad situation. >> reporter: solaiman nuri and his 9-year-old daughter hadessa, pictured on the far right were both killed. his 11-year-old daughter suffered a broken leg. his wife and the girls' mother decided to skip the saturday morning bike ride and decide stay home to make the family breakfast. the community held a

candlelight vigil last night at the scene it is still crowded on the sidewalk with flowers, candles and balloons to remember those the two family members who were killed. people out here at the scene have the nicest things to say about this family. people describe solaiman as a dedicated, loving father who worked hard as a truck driver, worked long hours to do everything he could to make sure his daughters had a happy life. amy hollyfield, abc7 news volunteers resume searching for missing morgan hill teenager wednesday. yesterday sierra lamar's family announced a $10,000 reward for her safe return. she vanished march 16th. lamar's family continues to hope that police and volunteers will find a lead that will bring her back to them. yesterday the search team got help again from 49ers'

quarterback alex smith and offensive lineman stalely. oakland police department says it was so overwhelmed with calls friday night officers couldn't respond to them all 6:30 that night the department had 125 calls for service. at the same time officers were working on 17 priority calls. two hours later the total number of standing calls increased to 146. all this occurred with a fully staffed department. the department says it will review why it happened and try to prevent it from happening again. uc davis researchers releasing study on autism this morning. for the first time, they've data linking a mother's weight with her child's odds for having autism. sergio quintana with the story. >> reporter: adding to public health for two reasons. there are rising levels of obesity in the united states. second, a sharp increase in the number of children diagnosed with autism. researchers looked at more

than 1,000 children between 2 and 5 years old and their mothers. they found mothers who were obese or had hyper tension or diabetes were 60% more likely to have autistic children than healthy mothers. findings should not be considered a conclusive explanation of the sharp rise in the number of children being diagnosed with autism. it does add support to concerns doctors have long had about mothers and their weight during pregnancy in a different study last month researchers found the number of children being diagnosed with the disorder has risen to 1 in 88. compared to 1 in 110 a few years ago. part of that is because doctors are more an waeufrt symptoms. this study linked other developmental disorders in children to obese pregnant mothers this report was published in the journal of pediatrics. the lead researcher says the

report adds more encouragement for pregnant mothers to maintain a healthy weight during pregnancy. estimated 1/3 of u.s. mothers are obese during pregnancy. uc berkeley has admitted students for fall and one activist group is not happy with the make-up of the class. demonstrators gathered sunday want the university to accept more underrepresented minorities. they say public schools should reflect california's population. lilian kim has more. >> i'm in the top 9%, selected to be a national scholar. >> reporter: she thought she had the grades, scores and extracurricular activities to get accept at uc berkeley. she was wrong. when she found out she didn't get in she was devastated. >> i was really sad. i felt like all my work was -- i felt like no one wanted me. all my work was not noticed.

>> reporter: the activist group, "by any means necessary" is trying to help. demanding uc berkeley double the number of black and latino students. they say the school fails to recognize the extra struggles that minors go through. >> there is no reason that the administration at berkeley should let students who have taken calculus, practice ballet, gotten top gpa's that is disfrom time to time -- discrimination. >> reporter: they organized a sit-in that lasted five hours. uc berkeley students aren't that sympathetic to the cause. the school hasn't used race, ethnicity and gender since voters passed prop 20916 years ago. that initiative end add firmive action at all public colleges and universities in california. >> voters chose to get rid of
