6:01. thank you for joining us. yo has an important study coming up -- sergio has an important study coming up. right now developing news police checking the cell phone records of the 17-year-old driver who killed a father and daughter who were riding bikes over the weekend. prosecutors considering an option that could mean a heavier penalty. amy hollyfield is live at the accident scene on treat boulevard in concord. >> reporter: we will be watching this developing news. the d.a. will get the case and start looking at it and considering whether this 17-year-old driver should be charged as adult. what happened here has broken many hearts here in concord. you can see here where the family was hit, where there

are flowers and candles and balloons. two members of a family died. sully man nuri and his -- solaiman nuri and his 9-year-old daughter were killed. his 11-year-old survived. his wife was not out on the bike ride with the family. friends and family members say it is impossible to find anyone with a bad thing to say about solaiman. that he was the best guy. a very dedicated family man. his 9-year-old daughter hadessa is being remembered as a fun girl who was always happy. >> my niece every time she would see me, hi, hi. i keep having her voice run through my head. i keep seeing her face. it is -- >> reporter: now the district attorney must decide how to treat the driver. he's 17, still a juvenile. the district attorney could decide to try him as adult.

because he's classified as a juvenile, abc7 has decided not to identify him. he's in the juvenile detention center. witnesses say he was speeding and changing lanes when he lost control of his cadillac suv. he crashed into a fire hydrant, three family members and a medical office building. there's so much rubble from the building they've had to put up a fence to keep people away from all of the destruction here on the sidewalk. the driver suffered minor injuries an in the crash. one thing the district attorney will be looking into is the cell phones records to see if the driver was on the phone at the time of the crash. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. volunteers are set to resume their search for missing morgan hill teenager this wednesday yesterday sierra lamar's family an a $10,000 reward for her safe return. she vanished after leaving for

school march 16th. new reward announced this past weekend as hundreds gathered for another search. several 49ers, including quarterback and offensive lineman were among those who joined the search. most of the search so far has been focused near her home and school. lamar's family hopes to continue to stay hopeful. police say this weekend barring new leads they are not planning any more official searches. oakland police department says it was so overwhelmed with calls friday night even though the department was there staffed officers couldn't respond to them all. 6:30 friday night the department had 125 calls for service. at the same time officers wering -- were working on 17 priority calls. two hours later 146 calls. the department will review why it happened hoping to find ways to prevent from it happening again. modesto teen who drew

national attention after move in with her high school teacher has ended the romance. 18-year-old jordan powers moved in with 41-year-old james hooker in february. hooker quit his teaching job and left his wife and children to move in with the teen. powers now tells abc news that she is moving back with her family and feels betrayed. >> he called me from jail and i told him that we're done. i lost everything for this guy. i lost my senior year. i gave up all my friends because they didn't agree with him. for him not to have enough respect to tell me the truth. >> powers said hooker has not denied the charges against him in conversations with her. the previous relationship dates back to 1998. powers says she fears hooker may have abused other teenagers. uc davis researchers releasing groundbreaking study on autism this morning. for the first time they've data linking a mother's weight

with her child's odds for autism. sergio quintana is live with the story. >> reporter: it is adding to public health concerns for two reasons. first rising levels of obesity in the united states. second, a sharp increase in the number of children diagnosed with awe tim. researchers looked at mover than --more than 1,000 children between two and five, mothers who were obese, had hypertension or diabetes were 60% more likely to have children who were autistic than healthy mothers. the study should not be considered a conclusive explanation in the number of children diagnosed but doctors have long had concerns about mothers and their weight during pregnancy. last month researchers found the number of children diagnosed with the disorder has risen to 1 in 88 compared to 1 in 110 a few years ago. part of that rise is becauses

did are more aware of the symptoms. -- because doctors are more an waeufrt symptoms. this study linked other developmental disorders. this report was published today in the journal of pediatrics. epidemiologist says the report adds more encouragement for pregnant mothers to maintain a healthy weight. a third of u.s. mothers are obese during pregnancy. sergio quintana, abc7 news. new study shows giant kelp off the california coast was contaminated with radiation from the fukuoka plant in japan. radioactive iodine was found in kelp off santa cruz in april of last year, a month after massive quake and tsunami led to the japanese nuclear reactor meltdown. scientists say radiation didn't last long and didn't appear to have affected the kelp, they are not sure what effect it had on fish that eat

revolved around the flight number. the controller thought what he heard was a pilot calling from united flight 12. but he couldn't find a united flight 12. the flight was in fact, united flight 5912. thinking it was a hoax the controller didn't call for any emergency response or fire crews on the ground. the controller didn't realize his mistake until after the plane had landed and the pilot made another call saying he was evacuating the plane. officials say nobody was injured. but the controller could face suspension or termination. 6:25. was it revenge? still the questions about race as a motive in a weekend killing spree. update on breaking news. latest on that overnight fire that has taken the lives of two firefighters. >> reporter: following developing news in concord. the district attorney will be taking a look at a case that happened over the weekend and deciding whether to charge a 17-year-old as adult. that story coming up.

you can see where this happened. -- down treat boulevard. you can see where this happened, full of candles and balloons where two members of a fem were killed. police say the driver was speeding -- and changing lanes he broke a higher hydrant which sent water spraying into the air crashed into the three bicyclists, a man and his two young daughters and then slammed into a building. he's 17-year-old, we have chosen not to release his name because he is a juvenile. the district attorney will be looking into whether he was on his cell phone at the time of the crash, whether he was drinking. prosecutors will decide whether to charge him as adultr. >> someone has to be held accountable for something like this. 17-year-old or not, sad situation. >> reporter: solaiman nuri and his 9-year-old daughter

hadessa were both killed. his 11-year-old suffered a broken leg and the girls' mother decided to skip the saturday morning bike ride and stayed behind to make breakfast for the family. the community held a candlelight vigil last night for the family and had nicest things to say about the victims. they described solaiman as a dedicated, loving father who worked hard, long hours as a truck driver to make sure his daughters had a happy life. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. at noon today musicians will gather outside oikos university in oakland the scene of last week's deadly shootings, one of the noon concerts to be held everyday this month to honor several killed. anyone who would like to give condolences through music is welcome. many bay area congregations used easter sunday to remember the shooting victims and give

injured while working in a manhole over the weekend. the rescue happened last night on fremont and howard the worker was installing fiber cable, fell, hit his head unable to climb out. firefighters lowered didn't a firefighter to carried the trapped worker out of well. two roommates make first court appearance to face murder charges following thursday's shootings of five african-americans in tulsa, oklahoma. 19-year-old jacob england and 32-year-old alvin watts are responsible for shootings that left three dead and two wounded saturday morning within three miles of each other. police say england's facebook account used a racial slur venting anger over the killing of his father two years ago by a black man. >> being an naacp president for seven years, i think somebody that committed these crimes were very upset with black people.

>> police say it is too early to say whether the shootings were racially motivated. so far the two suspects are not charged with hate crime enhancements. spring break is over for california lawmakers who face tough decisions today. they will decide whether to make deeper cuts to social welfare programs, reform public employee pension system and approve borrowing for high speed rail. governor brown is expected to ask lawmakers to appropriate more than two billion dollars to build the first high speed rail system. construction could begin later this year. latest on breaking news out of philadelphia we've been following all morning. two firefighters have been killed and two more injured while battling a massive warehouse fire in that city's kensington neighborhood. crews have been battling the blaze more than five hours, still facing several hot spots. witnesses reported several explosions from inside the six-story building, embers
