a couple light showers towards livermore valley and brentwood. elsewhere quiet. wet pavement. closer inspection around highway 580 and 680, a few light showers things are winding down south bay east of morgan hill. yesterday it was a slow mover. we had light rain for the bulk of the afternoon. lifting in the sacramento valley, snow in the sierra nevada from this system and winter storm watch for the one coming in 12 hours or so. i'll detail that for you, coming up. with the slick roads we had a couple earlier accidents in the east bay, both cleared. i'll show you a few live shots. here's san mateo bridge traffic light roads are wet you want to be a little extra careful. live shot 680 walnut creek good ride southbound highway 24.

so far no major problems. we'll check out south bay. northbound 280 for headlights out of san jose this is highway 17 out of the santa cruz mountains. we are following breaking news from indonesia. officials issued a tsunami watch for the entire indian ocean after a magnitude 8.6 quake hit off the coast of sumatra this morning. the quake struck 500 kilometers from banda aceh province. no word on damage or injuries. indonesian television showing scenes of crowds their homes for higher ground. more than 238,000 people were killed and much of banda aceh was devastated after a 9.1 quake in december of 2004. organizers are asking for volunteers in morgan hill to resume the search for missing teenager 15-year-old sierra

today the klaas kids foundation is setting up the search again and it needs your star power to come down here, try to find a clue that could lead to the recovery of sierra lamar. over the weekend her mother was talking about the toll this has taken on her. >> each day goes on, it is agonizing, it is difficult. i definitely many suffering sleep depend -- i definitely am suffering sleep deprivation. i need to focus on the belief that sierra is going to come forth. >> reporter: if you are thinking about coming down here today between 8:00 this morning and 1 this afternoon, dress for the weather, rain coming down, dress appropriately. bring a stick or club to push bushes out of the way.

golf club comes in handy. they are asking again as many volunteers as possible to come down. there's a couple other things they need. they need water and office supplies because when this center starts buzzing there's a lot of paper moved around. again, it is going to be a day-long search you might be out there for hours. bring your own water. dough s of water are needed as well. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. -- this morning a father and his young daughter who were hit and killed last saturday by an out of control suv will be laid to rest this is video of the 17-year-old driver as he arrived home in concord after being released from the juvenile detention center since saturday. he's accused of crashing into solaiman nuri and his daughter hadessa as they rode their bikes home. the district attorney had 48

hours to charge or release him while the investigation continues. prosecutors say the investigation could take another two or three weeks. amy hollyfield will be live with more on this story at 5 a.m.. in six 1/2 hours from now a group investigating a pepper spraying of students will release a long awaited report. under a deal between the university of california and the police union, only the officers seen in the video a can of orange pepper spray will be named in the report. the names of other officers will be blacked out. the report will be released online at noon. we'll have a link on abc7news.com under see it on tv. today could be the last parole hearing for charles manson who is serving a life sentence. this is the most recent picture of manson, now 77-years-old. he says he does not plan to

attend today's hearing. uncurrent law inmates can be denied the opportunity to reapply for parole for up to 15 years. manson could be 90 two before he's eligible for another hearing. he -- could be 92 before he's eligible for another hearing 4:37. in san jose this morning, city workers and the mayor are claim being victory following a court decision on the city's controversial pension proposal. yesterday a three-judge panel ruled in favor of firefighters, police officers and other city employees who filed suit to get wording changed on the upcoming measure. the ballot was unlawfully biased taking exception to the phrase pension reform. the court ruled it characterized the existing system as defective. they suggested pension modification, which the city has agreed to. >> san jose cannot have a mayor above the truth and law, unacceptable. right now city employees are going to take him to task.

the courts have agreed the mayor cannot use his influence to be unfruitful and to mislead voters. >> the -- untruthful and to mislead voters. >> it is clear it is going to the voters court of appeals and superior court has said that three times. >> measure b would reduce pension benefits for city employees. the mayor says it is they say to keep the city afloat after lay-offs and cuts in services. "star wars" creator george lucas is scrapping plans to build a huge complex on his ranch in marin county. instead his film producing company intends to sell to developers to build low income housing. neighbors complained the complex would lead to increased traffic and noise. the planning commission ok'd the plan over strong community opposition. opponents appealed. lucas' company says it will bill the new facility elsewhere. trails in golden gate park

good morning. wednesday. we have rain. you are looking live at our rooftop camera pointing towards san francisco, meteorologist lisa argen is following the storm. she is going to tell us how long the rain is going to be with us coming up. ucla apologizing for mistakenly sending out e-mails to 900 high school seniors congratulating them forgetting into the university. e-mails about financial aid awards went to the students last weekend. ucla officials another e-mail this week clarifying the

mistake. they say the seniors are on the waiting list for admission and will remain there for the time being. san francisco chief says the neighborhood around city college is safe, despite the murders of five people. he met with residents last night, he says last month's mass killing was an isolated incident and neighbors should not be worried. some neighbors aren't so sure. >> [ inaudible ] >> it is not safe. it is getting worse, going down hill there's a lot of people that don't live in the area that come in and make trouble. >> they said what they had to say. i was pretty much what i expected. >> more than two dozen showed up for the meeting. the man accused of killing the two men and women found dead at the home has pleaded not guilty. the chief says police continue to search for two weapons that investigators believe were used in the crime.

police still trying to figure out a motive is reportedly calm this morning in downtown -- stockton following a protest over a fatal shooting involving a police officer. occupy oakland protesters joined a demonstration demanding justice for the shooting victim yesterday. it turned into a confrontation when demonstrators began blocking traffic. police arrested at least one byrne. police say luther brown was shot and killed friday night after he grabbed an officer's baton and attacked him with it. the officer stopped brown because his car had no license plates. an investigation of the shoot something underway. 4:46. the major development we are expecting any time in the investigation into the shooting death of a florida teenager. plus, a jury reaches a verdict in a high profile racial discrimination case.

case by friday night. she set the timeline in a statement released last night. did not specifically say what the announcement would be stkhaoeufplding whether to charge george zimmermann with a crime for fatally shooting the unarmed 17-year-old martin. zimmermann says he was acting in self-defense. martin's parents say zimmermann attacked their son because he was black. zimmermann's attorneys announced they had quit the case saying they lost contact with their client. at a gathering last night chief magnus thanked the city council for voting to fight the racial discrimination lawsuit against him. the jury believed commented made by the chief which included racial slurs were inappropriate, but not racist. the chief disagrees, -- [ unintelligible ] >> i hope they recognize that our primary focus has to move

rain in our east bay, south bay towards the central coast. here's a look at brentwood and oakly where we have showers -- oakley where we have showers towards i-5 and tracy, further south morgan hill east of 101, and two gilroy looking at the shower activity and putting it into motion it continues to slowly liftoff to the east. that will be the story today. there is more energy offshore. where silt not raining now you could see showers -- where it is not raining now you could see showers. 52 in oakland now santa rosa 46, 50 los gatos, a little fog in the north bay, skies have cleared lots of high dew points two mile visibility, san jose visibility reduced. scattered showers slight chance of a thunderstorm next organized rainmaker could bring a half inch to an inch and a half of rain overnight

into thursday. this stalled out over much of the east bay yesterday beginning to slide east still more energy associated with it will keep the showers going throughout the afternoon not as much as what's to come. this system is pretty vigorous. more snow on the way for the sierra nevada. we will look for this energy to come our way overnight. 5:00 this afternoon, still evening commute showers, 2:00 in the morning heavy rain in the north bay, by the afternoon thursday, still rain in the north bay, east bay and then by friday, game time, 1:00, giants' opener looks like you will need the rain gear this should be the last of the wet weather makers. cooler air behind it, perhaps snow around 3,000 feet, mount hamilton, friday night into saturday cool highs again with scattered showers, 58 san francisco, 60 fremont. monterey bay, rain now, we should see a break later, 62

san francisco. biologists at san francisco aquarium of the bay aren't giddy over the possibility one of their sharks might be pregnant. specialists took their ultrasound equipment to the aquarium at pier 39 to perform a sonogram on the shark. the largest of these sharks. the results were inconclusive. they can't identify definitively if she is pregnant at an early stage. they did see lots of developing eggs, so that's a good sign that she has matured sexually, she could become pregnant. >> hard to tell if those are eggs because the sharks have a two year gestation. the embryos develop slowly. sharks can have up to 80 pups. >> they are called pups? >> pups. the city of seattle could stop weekly trash pick up to

reduce the amount of garbage in local landfills. picking up every other feet would save and keep 14 tons of waste out of landfills. the council is scheduled to vote on a pilot project. this morning one of television's best kept secrets no longer a mystery. creator of the simpsons says springfield, oregon was the inspiration for homer and his family's hometown. the springfield is located 100 miles south of portland across i-5 from eugene. the show has had a running joke hiding the location of springfield. people in oregon believed the show was based on their town -- [ unintelligible ] "good morning america" will have more at 7 a.m.. what my money was on illinois.
