-- right now southwesterly winds gusting. heaviest rain columbus parkway, vallejo american canyon through benicia 680 this cell east of san pablo, richmond going towards pleasant hill and concord. right now just rain everywhere from morgan hill, san leandro, castro valley and hayward back on the peninsula. rain here in san francisco south. thunderstorms from san lewis obispo south bay the -- the rain move going into campbell. north bay getting a break. we are going to keep it going throughout the day details in a few minutes. all that rain has caused a mudslide on highway 1 northbound, double slide, cars are having to get into the southbound lanes look out for that. one of the drivers who call the chp said it almost cause an accident.

we could see problems on highway 1 this morning, just be extra careful. there are wind advisories for the bay bridge, golden gate, san rafael bridge like yesterday. walnut creek wet, heavier rain heading through east bay and also as you head through benicia southbound 680 there's an accident. we'll be checking with you frequently. right now mechanics at sfo going over a jumbo jet after it was hit by lightning. terry mcsweeney is live at sfo where that london-bound flight made an emergency landing. >> reporter: united flight 930 took off, hundreds onboard, bound for london. a long trip ahead, 30, 45 minutes out of san francisco international, all of a sudden -- take a look at what happened. you see the lightning bolts

that is what happened. lightning slammed into the left side of the plane. the oxygen masks dropped. passenger michael o'neil described the scene what >> you could feel the lightning hit the plane. just a giant flash everyone is watching movies, it was overpowering how bright the flash was. i looked around and i sort of continued about my business. but i was definitely shaken and everyone sort of looked at each other like what was that? >> reporter: the pilot dumped fuel, came back to sfo through that lightning storm, made it safely. passengers are going to try it again at 3:00 this afternoon. by the way, aircraft is put together in such a way that it can sustain a lightning strike. if the aluminum skin on a

plane has no openings in it, the way they are designed, it will keep the current on the outside of the plane it doesn't get in. the instruments in the cockpit, are protected and the fuel system is designed to be able to withstand a burn through. also they've designed fuel which produces less vapor, therefore, less chance of an explosion. they haven't had any lightning-caused crashes on commercial craft in decades. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. right now hundreds of people are without power and there's damage all over the place. sergio quintana is live at the bay bridge with more. >> reporter: the rain has been easing up a bit. it is still breezy and kind of cold. the rains overnight dumped a pretty good amount of rain in the oakland hills causing a tree to come down.

the tree came double on glen court drive near arrowhead drive taking down powerlines. part of that tree came to rest on the hood of a car. the saturated ground -- crews were called and quickly restored power to the home as affected and cleared the lines. the fire department says that tree has been cleared off the street. around the rest of area heavy rains have made for a soggy and slick night. so far no serious problems or tie-ups. there have been several power outages throughout the bay area. about 2,000 people in the bayview, they've since had their power restored. in concord about 4,000 people had their power knocked out. i just got word from pg&e they say they are working on that. they are down to 700 customers who have power out. that power should be restored

a 20 hour standoff. the fire was put out overnight it started around left -- 11. the suspect had been holed up on the scene after authorities tried to serve an eviction notice. officers, s.w.a.t. team surrounded the area and evacuated residents. authorities tried to convince the man to surrender and fired flash grenades and tear gas in an effort to force him out. >> we believe the fire was started probably because the s.w.a.t. team's introduced gas and other incendiary devices into the apartment in an effort to get the suspect to surrender. in structures there are flammable materials. >> 53-year-old modesto sheriff's deputy robert paris, 16 year veteran of the department was shot to death with another man. no word on the suspects condition or whereabouts. breaking news in

contra costa county. health advisory lifted after an incident at the conoco phillips refinery in rodeo. health services received reports of a fire after 1:00 this morning. a haz-mat crew was sent to the scene and monitored the air. they said no significant health impacts were detected and the fire was put out. dive teams will be back in the water today searching two south bay reservoirs for missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. both reservoirs are close to the 15-year-old's home. divers are searching for any evidence connected to her dispeers republicans. her parents reported her missing a month ago today after she didn't show up for school. another search is set for tomorrow and sunday. another twist to the problems surrounding treasure bill lock year -- bill lockyear and his wife.

suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi says a neighbor and media distortions are to blame for his legal and political issues. the suspended san francisco sheriff says he's been denied his right to due process. he went on to dispute his neighbor's reconning of an argument between he and his wife that -- that thread to the charges. he says madison and the media have twisted the facts. mirkarimi pleaded to misdemeanor false imprisonment charges. the ethics panel must decide whether to remove him from office. game commissioner dan richards won't be punished for taking part in a mountain lion hunt in idaho. mountain lion hinting is not legal in california but it is in idaho.

san luis obispo. take a look at all these thunderstorms these continue to push to the northeast at 30 miles an hour. if you are traveling anywhere south and east of the bay, watch out this is very dangerous weather. closer to home further south, north i should say in the south bay pretty good weather around blossom hill and bailey avenue north of morgan hill. los gatos, san jose, east java drive you are wet, peninsula rain up into san francisco, across the bay, hayward union city, good cell towards dublin, manning road wet weather, san ramon valley, sycamore valley road pretty good downpours into the east further north pleasant hill, vine hill, hercules to vallejo columbus parkway, wet, north bay, break in marin, sonoma, most of the rough weather to the south. we still have an area of low pressure parallel to the california/oregon coast going to rotate throughout the day.

49 san francisco, 50 mountain view. winds gusting to 22 miles an hour at oakland, novato 21 mile an hour gusts, san jose southeast at 17. once this low moves through, we'll still have that unstable air, wind shift, things will calm. we've got rain this morning, possibility of a thunderstorm this afternoon and then still on tap for a big change in our weather, here's that violent line of storms that moved through yesterday. behind it we still have a lot of moisture pumped up around the low, the low still to the north and west of us going to rotate through across the bay today and that indicates that we will still have the showers and cool and blustery afternoon parts of the bay. by 11, 12:00, storms around, breaks, sunshine, further instability out there, we could see pretty good downpours. look was, focus shifts way south and we are looking at

quiet conditions. we picked up from half an inch to an inch and a half in the last 24 hours. we are looking at another half inch potentially along the peninsula. game today chilly 52°, yes, scattered showers and the breeze out of the northwest, 10 to 20 miles an hour. the rest of the day, partly cloudy, rain, possibility of thunder, and temperatures on the cool side, it looks like we are looking at a very dry pattern for the next several days with warming temperatures. numerous spin-outs. luckily, a lot are clearing. you want to avoid being one. new one reported on the peninsula north 101 at whipple. chp en route to that. bay bridge toll gives you an idea what to expect. windy, ponding on the roads, slick out there. if you are heading across the golden gate bridge, wind advisory lisa drove across it this morning, wind didn't seem

like the big problem. the wet roads and slick roads are causing the spin-outs and accidents. flooding reported as well in hayward, southbound 880 at a street, significant they are saying there's a lot of water, especially in the left lanes. look out for that as you head through the area. also, we have slowing northbound 238, not terrible, but you are moving under 40 miles an hour indicated by the yellow. if you are heading through pacifica northbound 1 at devil slide, mudslide in the northbound lanes cars are having to probably use southbound lanes to get around. that could be trouble spot this morning. could get worse. there's still an accident eastbound 80 willow blocking left lane. earlier crashes westbound 80 and southbound 680 have been cleared. sounds messy. warning this morning, about mosquitoes and potentially

deadly west nile virus. authorities confirmed the virus in a dead bird in pleasant hill. officials say the find is early. last year the first virus wasn't discovered until late june. it means the public should be extra diligent about preventing the spread of the virus by getting rid of standing water. if you find it tough to get a safety seat to fit in your car, you are not alone. research shows a huge majority of cars from 2010 and last year have designs that make it very difficult to install child safety seats. manufacturers aren't paying enough attention to how current seats are supposed to be installed. victory for california pet owners from lawmakers in sacramento. the state senate approved 12 month extension of the sale of license plates for pet lovers. 4,000 of the specialty plates purchased so far the money
