good morning. almost 5:01. i'm katie marzullo in for kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. it is a friday morning. man did we have weather overnight still in the bay area, some of it. lisa argen is tracking the storm. >> line that went through last night right now it is to the south of us. the worst weather around san luis obispo, central coast look at all the lightning strikes this is a very strong line of thunderstorms with hail, damaging winds, pressing north and east closer to home in the south bay raining from san jose to campbell through cupertino sunnyvale and east java drive shield of rain north into the east bay peninsula up further north heavier rain north of moraga, american canyon heavy cell right here benicia, the only place it is not raining marin, sonoma and parts of napa.

we continue to see moisture throughout the day we still have the three is going to push through that means potential for more thunderstorms later today, including a wet giants' game. here's a live shot of the san mateo bridge, wet and slippery conditions await for your compute to work this morning. flooding has been reported towards the san mateo bridge southbound 880 at a street, apparently in the left lane. look out for that. we've had quite a few accidents east bay and north bay, they've been cleared but there's new problems on the peninsula. also, mudslide northbound highway 1 at devils slide, two feet, chp at the scene. the lane is open, trying to clear it quickly they are slowing traffic in the area. new crash northbound 85 at 101, 101 at 92 and northbound 101 at whipple. they say you are safer on a plane than the highway. tell that to passengers of a plane hit by lightning after

leaving sfo last night. terry mcsweeney is live at the airport with what happened and reaction from a passenger. >> reporter: experts will tell you it is safer to fly than to be in a vehicle on the ground and it is a fact according to the experts. doesn't moon it want scary last night when a jet bound for london was struck by lightning. take a look at the storm that did it. united flight 930 south -- out of sfo, 30, 45 minutes out of sfo here comes the lightning slams into the left side of the aircraft. oxygen masks dropped down. there's a burst of light in the passenger area of that jet. very scary, here's what one pang michael o'neil told us how he -- one passenger michael o'neil told us how he felt. >> i felt like everything was under control and in good hands. the plane felt like it was

flying okay and everything was okay. we are flying back into a lightning storm because we are flying back to where we took off, where the lightning was. i was a little bit like maybe we should just keep flying to london. >> reporter: it came back to sfo, made it back safely. you are looking at video of the lightning storm in san leandro. passengers are going to try to get london again 3:00 this afternoon, united has scheduled a flight for that time. you know they are watching the forecast. i couldn't help but hear lisa argen talking about thunderstorms this afternoon and i think if they get here and you hear that they are anywhere near here and you have been on a plane that just last night was struck by lightning you are going to have deep second thoughts about taking that flight. again, flying in lightning is safe. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. in addition to lightning, saturated ground, gusty winds

brought down trees and knocked out power in parts of the bay area. sergio is on the storm watch with more on that at the bay bridge toll. >> reporter: the storm is something that is constantly changing in the last few minutes it has eased up a bit. rains have stopped, winds have calmed. those heavy downpours did cause a tree to come down in the oakland hills last night. it happened around 8:00 on glen court drive near are rehead drive the tree came -- near arrowhead drive, the tree came down, taking some powerlines with it. pg&e cleared the line and restored power. throughout the rest of the bay area rains have made for a soggy and sometimes slick commute. you've heard about the spin-outs and some of the problems this morning. so far no serious problems. the storm has knocked out

news coverage. breaking news, in modesto new overnight developments at the scene of a 20 hour police standoff with a suspected cop killer. late night fire is now out burning in the apartment where the suspect was holed up following shooting deaths of sheriff's deputy and civilian. police say the fire was likely caused by tear gas and other devices that s.w.a.t. teams use to get the suspect to come out they still don't know what happened to that suspect. >> what we need to do is determine who the suspect is. pick apart his life to try to determine a motive. what happened that led up to this shooting. and then from there, we need to honor and bury our deputy. 53-year-old modesto sheriff's deputy robert paris was kill.

investigators have not released the -- was killed. investigators have not released the name of the suspect who was killed. we are following breaking news in contra costa county. health advisory cancelled after reports of a fire at the conoco phillips refinery this morning. health services received reports after 1 a.m. at the refinery haz-mat crew was to monitor the air they say no health impacts are detected. the fire was put out. police have been searching for vandals who have been slashing tires in pleasanton. the first reports came tuesday morning from residents in the harley gate court neighborhood. wednesday police received reports from a dozen people with slashed tires. >> when you have it and you only know it is you and find out you get a slash you think is somebody out to get me.

when i heard there were other neighbors i figured this was somebody who obviously is having fun slashing tires. >> vandals hit 30 cars a few weeks ago in another pleasanton neighborhood. police have made no arrests in that case. >> muni is cutting back on overtime. the controller's office says muni is on track to spend 60 million dollars on overtime this year, nearly double the 32 million dollars the agency budgeted. muni has stopped paying overtime to replace drivers who call in sick, instead their buses will stay parked. this practice started two weeks ago, it does not affect train service. another look at the weather. i'd say bring an umbrella but that may not do it. it is a meteorologist's dream. lisa argen tracking the storm. lightning thunder east bay dublin hayward heavy rain pushing over to verona road,

livermore valley, a line of pretty good rain into the east bay all over the bay further north we've got more moderate rain coming down north of vallejo around american canyon highway 37, 121, shields of rain from pittsburg back west through pinole, richmond, is , little break now. rain from 101 back towards 280 along the coast it is not raining in the north bay around marin and sonoma. another look at south bay and you will notice mountain view, san jose, campbell, morgan hill, lots of wet weather. thunderstorms along san luis obispo, pismo beach and the rain cuts off here. we'll continue to see the rain ease through the morning. by sunrise conditions calmer, chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. look at that seven-day. frances, i imagine it is not friday light out there so many problems this morning because of the wet and

slippery roads. here's a live shot of i-80 in berkeley look out for windy conditions across the bay bridge. accidents on i-80 out of solana county into the east bay. chain requirements in the sierra. live shot of 101 san jose. you want to slow denial and give yourself extra time you -- slow down and give yourself extra time. you want to avoid being one of the spin-outs. all of these accidents are solo spin-outs north 68 occur ham where we are seeing heavier rain, -- north 101 whip pill, north 101 eastbound 92 another spin-out. these are all -- s be olo spin-outs you want to avoid turning into one of these accidents. flooding in all the lanes of westbound 380 as you head to 101 towards sfo look out for that.

rain down through san mateo, redwood city, where not raining is up to the north this is why this rain as it continues to shift east you will get your break too later probably throughout the next hour or so, the sun coming up in another hour and a half. the worst weather south around san bispo, we are looking at what we saw -- san luis obispo where we are looking at that rain that pushed through. oakland, san francisco, cool much cooler air mass behind that strong line of storms, breezy winds at times once you get the downpours you are getting winds gusty to 20, 25 miles an hour, calm here, santa rosa, napa not raining. we are looking at showers throughout the morning, rain, possibility of a thunderstorms. we've got sunshine on tap you know what that does? it will further destabilize the atmosphere as the low continues to spin in off the

coast, over the bay today. after that things are going to calm down throughout the later afternoon, evening compute looks good. here's that strong line of storms and the low to the north and west of us. with it, comes that cooler air. we are going to look at in fact already breaks in the cloud cover, this morning the heaviest line continues to shift east and then by 8:00, 9:00, scattered showers, little more rain developing with by the noon hour, sonoma and marin. and the ballgame could see scattered showers, sunshine it will be cool by that time, wind shift in the afternoon northwesterly winds keeping it cool throughout the day only in the low 50s to start out and mid 50s by the end of the day. today like yesterday temperatures cool, sky partly cloudy, scattered showers, maybe a thunderstorm, the heaviest organized area of rain will be behind us within the next hour or so. if you are leaving for work you may want to leave a little

later, once the rain has pushed through which it continues to do this morning. having a hard time keeping track of these new accidents. three new ones while lisa was just talking this gives you an idea what you can expect for your ride to work. live shot san mateo bridge, visibility is limited, roads slick with the rain we are seeing a lot of spin-outs. live shot 680 walnut creek wet and slick. southbound traffic here moving, light towards highway 24, but i think that's the problem. with the light traffic and the slick roads, we are seeing a lot of accidents. we've had several north 101 durham may still be blocking left lane. north 101 whipple earlier spin-out now they are saying there's flooding as well. also, south 101 julian in san jose, another crash reported. i'll try to keep you posted on all the accidents this morning. if you are heading towards sfo,

this afternoon a sell-out crowd will watch the giants play their home opener against the pirates at the giants return home after playing the first six games on the road. yesterday a no-hitter in the sixth en route to his first win of the season giants used clutch hitting. wilson survived 9th final out with the bases loaded. giants hung on 4-2. cain will make the start today first pitch 1:35. fans are gearing up for the home opener. you can see the giants' faithful have a lot of imagination. you can bet the stands will be

livermore, calaveras road moderate rain, lightning strikes and hail throughout parts of the sit bay, more rain through san jose, los gatos on the peninsula, a break from san mateo, belmont, wood acre that break continues to the west. north and east benicia, vine hill road, more wet weather through the next hour this will continue to ease up, more rain for your friday afternoon. there's just so many accidents to keep track of this morning. a lot of solo spin-outs through san jose southbound 101 at julian, accident where a car swerved off and hit bushes this is northbound under 880. also another new crash in san jose southbound 280 on the connector ramp to highway 17 and 880. couple problems in the southbound bay. live shot of i-80 in berkeley, as you head towards the bay bridge toll, look out for windy conditions on the bay bridge, golden gate bridge and also the richmond san rafael

bridge. look out for mudslide highway 1 pacifica, devils slide flooding on the connector ramp from 380 to 101 numerous accidents on 101 on the peninsula. nervous passengers at sfo will board another flight to london this afternoon. their original flight had to make an emergency landing last night after it was struck by lightning. terry mcsweeney is live at sfo. we've heard from one of the passengers this morning. >> reporter: we are going to hear more from him shortly. united flight 930 out of san francisco bound for london, packed flight, 30, 45 minutes out, all of a sudden it ran into that lightning storm that of us saw last night. take a look at pictures of that lightning storm. tough enough to watch when you are on the ground, amazing to look at. if you are on a flight and it hits year jet, wow!

lightning did exactly that hit the left side of the plane last night on flight 930. oxygen masks dropped down. passenger mike o'deal described the scene. >> you could feel the -- feel the lightning hit the plane, just a giant flash, everyone watching movies and stuff, it was overpowering how bright the flash was. i looked around and i sort of continued about my business. but i was definitely shaken and everyone sort of looked at each other like what was with that? >> reporter: wow. the pilot dumped fuel, flew back to sfo through that storm, made it back safely safely. passengers are going to try again at 3:00 this afternoon. i was reading on a website scientific american website, it says, that the aluminum skin of those jets absorb the current, keep it away from the inside of the jet.

it keeps it away from the computers in the cockpit. it keeps it from the fuel lines in that jet. in fact, it is very safe to fly through a lightning storm and most jets have been hit by lightning but there have been no crashes as a result in decades. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. right now hundreds of pg&e customers remain without power because of last night's storm in san francisco more than 300 customers lost their electricity around midnight in concord, about 750 homes and businesses lost power during two separate outages last night. pg&e says customers should have power restored between 7:00 and 10:00 this morning. this morning the fire department says a tree that blocked a street in oakland hills has been cleared. this tree collapsed and took didn't powerlines with it around 8:00 last night on glen court drive near arrowhead drive. parts of the tree came down on

missing sierra lamar. both reservoirs are close to the 15-year-old's home. divers are searching for any evidence connected to her dies appearance. her parents reported her missing a month ago today after she didn't show up for school. another search set for tomorrow and sunday. another bizarre twist to the problems surrounding state treasure bill lockyear and his wife nadia. the chronicle reports that his wife sent an e-mail to another paper the mercury news, suggesting she was in distress and blaming her husband for hooking her on to drugs. hayward police went to her home where nadia said she was fine. she told a reporter she drafted part of the e-mail but everything about her husband was added later. a spokesman for bill lockyear says the accusations are false. nadia lock year is blaming e-mail on her former boyfriend who is under investigation in

connection with a possible assault on her. time to check in with lisa argen. we've got some pretty good rain in the east bay, moderate to heavy from san leandro to hayward, dublin, 580, 680 through union city and fremont. also the south bay looking at pretty good rain from campbell, morgan hill, san jose wet as well as sunnyvale and cupertino. here's where the rain line begins to shift. it is shifting out of alameda into berkeley, you can see the back edge of it here still rainy up through american canyon and 80. sonoma, marin, parts of napa, dry that is going to be the trend throughout the morning hours, san francisco, a break. the rain continues to shift east throughout the morning hours. we are going to see the roughest weather south of the bay area today. we still have an area of low pressure that going to push through the bay area this afternoon that is going to bring scattered showers, possibility of a thunderstorm, breezy winds northwest 20
